• Passing optional parameter by reference in c++

  I'm having a problem with optional function parameter in C++ What I'm trying to do is to write function with optional parameter which is passed by reference, so that I can use it in two ways (1) and (2), but on (2) I don't really care what is the value of mFoobar. I've tried such a code: void foo(double &bar, double &foobar = NULL) { bar = 100; foobar = 150; } int main() { double mBar(0),mFoobar(0); foo(mBar,mFoobar); // (1) cout << mBar << mFoobar; mBar = 0; mFoobar = 0; foo(mBar); // (2) cout << mBar << mFoobar; return 0; } but it crashes at void foo(double &bar, double &foobar = NULL) with message : error: default argument for 'double& foobar' has type 'int' Is it possible to solve it without function overloading? • Implicit Type Conversions in Reflection

  So I've written a quick bit of code to help quickly convert between business objects and view models. Not to pimp my own blog, but you can find the details here if you're interested or need to know. One issue I've run in to is that I have a custom collection type, ProductCollection, and I need to turn that in to a string[] in on my model. Obviously, since there is no default implicit cast, I'm getting an exception in my contract converter. So, I thought I would write the next little bit of code and that should solve the problem: public static implicit operator string[](ProductCollection collection) { var list = new List<string>(); foreach (var product in collection) { if (product.Id == null) { list.Add(null); } else { list.Add(product.Id.ToString()); } } return list.ToArray(); } However, it still fails with the same cast exception. I'm wondering if it has something to do with being in reflection? If so, is there anything that I can do here?? I'm open to architectural solutions, too!

Another thing I noticed is that the test terminates on this second last line and the last line is never executed. Am I doing everything correct?

• Create new or update existing entity at one go with JPA

  A have a JPA entity that has timestamp field and is distinguished by a complex identifier field. What I need is to update timestamp in an entity that has already been stored, otherwise create and store new entity with the current timestamp. As it turns out the task is not as simple as it seems from the first sight. The problem is that in concurrent environment I get nasty "Unique index or primary key violation" exception. Here's my code: // Load existing entity, if any. Entity e = entityManager.find(Entity.class, id); if (e == null) { // Could not find entity with the specified id in the database, so create new one. e = entityManager.merge(new Entity(id)); } // Set current time... e.setTimestamp(new Date()); // ...and finally save entity. entityManager.flush(); Please note that in this example entity identifier is not generated on insert, it is known in advance. When two or more of threads run this block of code in parallel, they may simultaneously get null from entityManager.find(Entity.class, id) method call, so they will attempt to save two or more entities at the same time, with the same identifier resulting in error. I think that there are few solutions to the problem. Sure I could synchronize this code block with a global lock to prevent concurrent access to the database, but would it be the most efficient way? Some databases support very handy MERGE statement that updates existing or creates new row if none exists. But I doubt that OpenJPA (JPA implementation of my choice) supports it. Event if JPA does not support SQL MERGE, I can always fall back to plain old JDBC and do whatever I want with the database. But I don't want to leave comfortable API and mess with hairy JDBC+SQL combination. There is a magic trick to fix it using standard JPA API only, but I don't know it yet. Please help.

• Optimizing an embedded SELECT query in mySQL

  Ok, here's a query that I am running right now on a table that has 45,000 records and is 65MB in size... and is just about to get bigger and bigger (so I gotta think of the future performance as well here): SELECT count(payment_id) as signup_count, sum(amount) as signup_amount FROM payments p WHERE tm_completed BETWEEN '2009-05-01' AND '2009-05-30' AND completed > 0 AND tm_completed IS NOT NULL AND member_id NOT IN (SELECT p2.member_id FROM payments p2 WHERE p2.completed=1 AND p2.tm_completed < '2009-05-01' AND p2.tm_completed IS NOT NULL GROUP BY p2.member_id) And as you might or might not imagine - it chokes the mysql server to a standstill... What it does is - it simply pulls the number of new users who signed up, have at least one "completed" payment, tm_completed is not empty (as it is only populated for completed payments), and (the embedded Select) that member has never had a "completed" payment before - meaning he's a new member (just because the system does rebills and whatnot, and this is the only way to sort of differentiate between an existing member who just got rebilled and a new member who got billed for the first time). Now, is there any possible way to optimize this query to use less resources or something, and to stop taking my mysql resources down on their knees...? Am I missing any info to clarify this any further? Let me know... • How to use symbolic links in windows server 2008R2 across the network (mklink)

  I have One Server (Srv1) which holds data with file shares and the storage is full. Now I have second Server (Srv2) which has alot more space. No I would like to transfer all the data von Serv1 to Serv2 and have links to the new destination. I found mklink very useful here but unfortunately it does not work over the network. Which also points the docu out. People heavily rely on the path's so it would be helpful if somone has a pointer for me... how to handle symbolic links a cross the network with Windows Servers. I am running Windows Server 2008. Thanks for any help

  If I hook an external monitor to my Linux laptop and configure it for dual head with the Gnome system tools, I do get them configured with the proper resolution and position (one to the left of the other) The mouse pointer, however, will apparently use the greatest of the two vertical resolutions. This way, when I move up to the top border, the mouse exits the visible screen, traveling in empty space, and this is quite annoying, because you can't go to the upper panel just by going up very fast. Is there a way of enforcing the right resolutions for the mouse, too? Thank you

  Hi guys I have an instance where I have a logo image as part of some artwork.. If a user uploads a new logo I have a form field which is larger than the default logo. I then use that form field to position the new image. • Permuting a binary tree without the use of lists

  I need to find an algorithm for generating every possible permutation of a binary tree, and need to do so without using lists (this is because the tree itself carries semantics and restraints that cannot be translated into lists). I've found an algorithm that works for trees with the height of three or less, but whenever I get to greater hights, I loose one set of possible permutations per height added. Each node carries information about its original state, so that one node can determine if all possible permutations have been tried for that node. Also, the node carries information on weather or not it's been 'swapped', i.e. if it has seen all possible permutations of it's subtree. The tree is left-centered, meaning that the right node should always (except in some cases that I don't need to cover for this algorithm) be a leaf node, while the left node is always either a leaf or a branch. The algorithm I'm using at the moment can be described sort of like this: if the left child node has been swapped swap my right node with the left child nodes right node set the left child node as 'unswapped' if the current node is back to its original state swap my right node with the lowest left nodes' right node swap the lowest left nodes two childnodes set my left node as 'unswapped' set my left chilnode to use this as it's original state set this node as swapped return null return this; else if the left child has not been swapped if the result of trying to permute left child is null return the permutation of this node else return the permutation of the left child node if this node has a left node and a right node that are both leaves swap them set this node to be 'swapped' The desired behaviour of the algoritm would be something like this: branch / | branch 3 / | branch 2 / | 0 1 branch / | branch 3 / | branch 2 / | 1 0 <-- first swap branch / | branch 3 / | branch 1 <-- second swap / | 2 0 branch / | branch 3 / | branch 1 / | 0 2 <-- third swap branch / | branch 3 / | branch 0 <-- fourth swap / | 1 2 and so on...   The included JavaScript snippet is supposed to do the following: As the user clicks on the map, initialize headMarker and draw a circle (polygon) around it As the user clicks inside the circle, initialize tailMarker and draw the path between these two markers 1 is happening as expected. But as the user clicks inside the circle, in the function(overlay,point), overlay is non-null while point is null. Because of this, the code fails to initialize tailMarker. Can someone tell me a way out. • Why does the CPU usage reach 100% when laptop is plugged in?

  I have an HP Elitebook 8440p with Windows 7 Ultimate, i7 Processor and 8 GB RAM. For the last couple of days, when I plug-in my laptop for charging, the CPU usage shoots up to 100% and remains there for around 15 minutes. No offending process shows up in Task Manager/Process Explorer but the laptop is practically unusable for that time. The CPU usage becomes normal when I remove the power cord but shoots up again when plugged back. This is happening with different power adapters/wall sockets so it might not be a faulty adapter issue. Why is this happening and any pointer to resolve this issue?

• MySQL get point in time totals from related tables

  Hi everyone We have an order book and invoicing system and I've been tasked with trying to output monthly rolling totals from these tables. But I don't know really where to start with this. I think there's some SQL syntax that I don't even know about yet. I'm familiar with INNER/LEFT/JOINS and GROUP BY etc but grouping by date is confusing since I don't know how to limit the data to only the current date that's being grouped by at that point. I think this will involve joining the tables to themselves or possibly a sub-select. I always thought it best to avoid sub-selects apart from when absolutely necessary. Basically the system has 3 tables orders: order_id, currency, order_stamp orders_lines: order_line_id, invoice_id, order_id, price invoices: invoice_id, invoice_stamp order_stamp and invoice_stamp are UTC unix timestamps stored as integers, not MySQL timestamps. I'm trying to get a listing by year/month showing the total of current unbilled orders (sum of price), at that point in time. Current orders are ones where order_stamp is less than or equal to 00:00 on the 1st of the month. Unbilled orders are ones where invoice_stamp is null or invoice_stamp is greater than 00:00 on the 1st of the month. At that point in time there may not be a related invoice yet and invoice_id might be null. Anyone got any suggestions on what I should join to what and what I need to group by? Cheers, B
