• Login box not shown on Ubuntu

  I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 (64bit) as a guest OS in VirtualBox, using Windows7 Professional (64bit) as host. After Ubuntu install, I did installed Xfce4 (sudo apt-get install xfce4). Logged in using a Xfce session, and when I logged out, I couldn't see the login box anymore, only the regular gnome background from login screen. Then I restarted the virtual machine, and now I'm not able to see the login box anymore, only the gnome background. Does someone knows how to solve this? Thanks in advance Update: I've tried to use Xubuntu, that comes with Xfce. And I'm facing the same problem. As a common denominator from the two cases, now I see the problem arises after I've updated the system, and then installed curl (via apt-get), zlib (make process), git (make process). But I'm not sure this can be the cause for this ... Update: I isolated the problem. The bad guy is zlib, but I don't have a clue why. In fact, it does crash not only ubuntu and xubuntu, but also Debian (Yes, I've tested all). I'll keep this question in case someone have the same problem, but I think my initial question is not valid anymore.

(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5120) Background to this error I've been trying to move my destination logshipping database to another physical server for analysis purposes. Because I do not have active directory set up, I had to hack my process by using the same username/password for both the source and destination servers to get the process to work. Following that, I used this guy's solution to move the destination database to another server. However, this error occurs when I try to bring the database back online. I don't have an E drive on my server and I have no idea why it's trying to open a file from E drive. I have over a 100gb left on my hard disk so it's definitely not a space issue. This sounds like a bug... Any ideas? I'm running SQL Server 2008 Enterprise edition on Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit

• COM+/Desktop Heap errors in IIS affecting sites at random?

  We have a Win2K3 server that is hosting 30+ sites. Each site is configured to have its own unique application pool -- so that we can manually recycle specific sites if needed and not kill sessions for the others. From what I've read, the consequence of this type of setup is that each application pool worker process gets allocated a Desktop Heap (normally 512 kb's) and we limit the number of app pools we can serve. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/david.wang/archive/2006/01/25/security-considerations-of-usesharedwpdesktop-on-iis6.aspx PROBLEM: What we're seeing is that occasionally COM+ errors get triggered, presumably by hitting our 512 kb limit of the desktop heap -- and certain sites become unresponsive (or have errors) until we manually recycle that specific app pool. I know that I can increase the desktop heap limit to 1024, and make other tweaks/tunes, but I've been tasked with finding out what exactly causes one site's heap to max out as opposed to another. It seems that when we start seeing COM+ errors, the sites it affects are random -- small sites or big sites (heavier used). Is it based on process id? Traffic? Any pointers on understanding this a little more would be excellent. Thanks! jg

• Postgresql server will not start

  I'm on Windows 7. I restarted my computer. I then tried to connect to the database and got an error. I don't remember which one in particular but it was some connection issue. I decided to try to restart the server, so I clicked on "Restart server" from the start menu. This blocked. After a few minutes I killed the process and tried again, only to get a "The service is starting or stopping. Please try again later." message. I rebooted the computer again, tried to start again, and got the same error. I killed the pg_ctl process and tried starting it manually, but that didn't work either: C:\Users\DrClaud>cscript "C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.3\scripts\serverctl.vbs" start wait Microsoft (R) Windows Script Host Version 5.8 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. • Unable to stop chrome.exe *32

  So I was installing roboform today and was unable to stop the process chrome.exe *32... Even when I uninstalled chrome. This is the error I got: I used lockhunter and it said it was located in %appdata%\Local\Google\Chrome. However, it was unable to unlock, delete or rename. When I use explorer to delete or rename that folder, it says it's being used by Chrome. Even after restarting my computer it still does this. I've tried using the built in chrome task manager (Wrench View Background Pages) and I can't seem to find a process there that has the same amount of memory. I have run many, many virus scans, by: Microsoft security essentials AVG (Free version) Malwarebytes (Pro version) Norton 360 (Pro version) McAfee (Pro Version) Avira (Free version) Avast! Antivirus (Free version) None of which returned with any viruses. • Is it possible to be a Linux professional studying on your own?

  I read economics at university(nothing to see with linux, isn't it? :P). I have some basic knowledge about booting process, Linux Kernel compiling from source and stuff like that. But of course I have still much to learn sometimes some errors appears and "voila" I am lost. I had: Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse, Arch.. using Gentoo now. I'd like to know what you linux users, professionals, administrators... would think it is the best way to learn linux in a professional way. Is it worth studying it and passing the LPIC test enough to work in the linux world? or do I need going to IT uni? I've heard LFS is a good way of learning about linux, is that real? I've been thinking about getting to LFS learn about more deeply about the linux process and learning scripts. It is possible to do this way? if anyone has a tip or a good way of doing, maybe someone did it. Any tip is very welcome. Words from a person in love with linux. :D The best, Marc

• Can’t connect to SQL Server 2008 - looks like Shared Memory problem

  I am unable to connect to my local instance of SQL Server 2008 Express using SQL Server Management Studio. I believe the problem is related to a change I made to the connection protocols. Before the error occurred, I had Shared Memory enabled and Named Pipes and TCP/IP disabled. I then enabled both Named Pipes and TCP/IP, and this is when I started experiencing the problem. When I try to connect to the server with SSMS (with either my SQL server sysadmin login or with windows authentication), I get the following error message: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233) Why is it returning a Named Pipes error? Why would it not just use Shared Memory, as this has a higher priority order in the list of connection protocols? It seems like it is not listening on Shared Memory for some reason? When I set Named Pipes to enabled and try to connect, I get the same error message. My windows account is does not have administrator priviliges on my computer - perhaps this is making a difference in some way (as some of the discussions in this post about an "SuperSocketNetLib\Lpc" registry key seems to suggest). I have tried restarting the SQL Server service, by the way, and also tried to get someone to log onto the machine with an admin account to restart the SQL Server service. Still no luck.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Drivers Missing Would Not Install?

  I am building my dev machine with WS2008R2SP1. I consider Windows Server as the best development environment for C# since I tend to focus on server-centric (integration) applications. The desktop flavor of Windows (7) doesn't play nicely with things like Commerce Server or BizTalk... so I to like stick to the environment I develop for. Previously I used to develop inside of VM's but I've found that it is super inefficient and tends to take a toll on the laptops. (I've gone through two of them in 6 months). Problem is that I multiple devices that do not want to be recognized by Windows: My machine is Dell Precision M4500: Intel Core i7-Q740, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM, Dell re-branded Broadcom DW1501 802x11n Half-Mini Card, Dell re-branded Broadcom DW375 Bluetooh Module, Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network connection NVidia Quadro FX1800 Graphics The devices in question are the Dell rebranded broadcom network and bluetooth adapters: Broadcom USH: USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&REV_0101&MI_00 USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&MI_00 DW375 Bluetooth Module USB\VID_413C&PID_8187&REV_0517 USB\VID_413C&PID_8187 When I ran the broadcom installers I get "Operating System not supported" which I think is a big oversight on Broadcom's part. Why check for system version string? UGHGHGH Moreover if I try to manually force the driver in windows... I get an error: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\btwampsecfl.inf_amd64_neutral_d8fc2b85d035ed47\btwampsecfl.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&MI_00\7&66DE6C9&0&0000 with the following status: 0xe0000217. '- or - Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\btwampfl.inf_amd64_neutral_d4c4acf036c61299\btwampfl.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_413C&PID_8187\90004EEEF5A6 with the following status: 0xe0000217. I googled the 0xe0000217 error code and it says Bad service install section in the driver inf file... Any ideas on how to fix this? I also tried the post by BetaIQ on MSDN Forum, unfortunately the links to the driver package included in the post were dead :( PS. On a side note I also do mobile development for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone, and BB. Having the bluetooth is quite useful with mobile devices.

• How to upgrade Apache 2 from 2.2 to 2.4

  I was in the process of doing a test upgrade from Apache 2.2 to 2.4.3. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I would have upgraded to 12.04 for this to see if the upgrade would go a lot smoother. Unfortunately, I was told it wasn't an option...so I'm stuck using 10.04. • Windows Server (SBS) 2008 - Telephony service won't start (missing permissions)

  I am running a SBS 2008 server. It's setup as the domain controller for the network. After a reboot, the Telephony service (and all services that depend on it) refuses to start under the Network Service account. The error given is: Error 1297: A privilege that the service requires to function properly does not exist in the service account configuration. You may use the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in (services.msc) and the Local Security Settings MMC snap-in (secpol.msc) to view the service configuration and the account configuration. This has caused all the network services not to be accessible e.g. terminal services, VPN (RRAS), SQL Server instances. The SSH daemon I have running on the box will accept connections only from localhost, but won't respond on the network. After searching around, the only advice I could find was to grant the Network Service account these permissions: Adjust memory quotas for a process Replace a process level token I set those permissions on both the Default Domain Policy and the Default Domain Controller Policy, but it seemingly had no effect. Most of the services will start if I change them to run under the Local System account, but that didn't make them accessible on the network. I even tried removing the Routing and Remote Access Services feature, rebooting and reinstalling it, but the issue remains. Any ideas?

  I have a linode VPS, running openSUSE 12.1 (A little outdated, but stable). I have installed the RPMS for mod_pagespeed. mod_pagespeed.conf has "ModPagespeed on". • Cannot start listening on a certain TCP port, but there's nothing currently listening on it

  I have Windows Service that uses a WCF service host to listen for connections on TCP port 61000. When I try to start the service, I get the error: Service cannot be started.   I'm pulling my hair out figuring this out. My startup-config is good, I can view it with a show command. I'm trying to copy it to a tftp server: asa5505# copy startup-config tftp Address or name of remote host []? ipaddress Destination filename [startup-config]? t !! %Error writing tftp://ipaddress/t (Timed out attempting to connect) On my TFTP server (SolarWinds), I get the following: binary, PUT. Started file name: C:\TFTP-Root\t binary, PUT. File Exists, C:\TFTP-Root\t binary, PUT. Deleting Existing File. binary, PUT. Interrupted by client, cause: The process cannot access the file 'C:\TFTP-Root\t' because it is being used by another process I've used tftpd32 with same results. I've tried different servers, even one on the same network as the asa ... same results. It'll create a 0 byte file and never do the dump. What's going on? Everything is working normally except for this.

• Outlook slow to open attachments

  When a colleague tries to open attachments in her email (Outlook 2003 talking to an Exchange 2007 server) they talk ages to open. The files are relatively small, all less than 1MB. We've tried creating a new Windows profile for the user and tried creating new Outlook profiles, however that hasn't made any difference. And we've tried accessing her account from someone else's PC, and the attachments open immediately there. The only thing that might provide a clue is that Process Monitor shows Outlook on her PC trying to write the file to a folder within the user's "Temporary Internet Files" folder with FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors. Can't find a lot of useful information on that message online though. What causes the FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors? And would that make opening attachments so incredibly slow that opening a < 1MB file can take a matter of minutes? UPDATE: Discovered that this isn't just an issue with Outlook. Other files being accessed over the network show the same FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors in Process Monitor. The problem is just more noticeable with Outlook, because although other applications take a while to open files it isn't a matter of minutes.

• Outlook 2010, 2007 Sync problems after migration from SMTP to Exchange

  Our organization recently switched from an SMTP server to an Exchange server, since then several user's Outlook's are not synchronizing their emails as expected with the Exchange server. Our move over from an SMTP server to an Exchange server consisted of adding the new Exchange account alongside the existing SMTP account, drag-dropping/copy-pasting folders client-side from the SMTP account in the folder pane in outlook, to the newly created Exchange account. The problem happens when a user moves an email to a folder from their inbox or another folder. At this point the email disappears from Outlook client side. Re-syncing the folder, send/receive, closing/opening outlook and even system reboots do not make this email reappear. The Outlook web interface (OWA) reports the email is in fact in the folder they placed it in, and is not deleted. Doing a "search all mail items" for the emails shows that the email is still there; not deleted nor removed. To add to the confusion, when new folders are created and the email is placed in these folders, the synchronization happens without any issue both client side and server side. As the emails are appearing server side, we are confident to presume this is a client side issue. We have tried adding/removing accounts on one system which resulted in the same issue. This was a very long and slow process due to the sheer volume of emails (20gig+ from most users). We have tried reinstalling outlook restoring accounts from back-ups which has not resolved the issue. We also tried upgrading one system from outlook 2007 to outlook 2010 which, again, did not resolve the issue. We have experienced issues with a lot of emails disappearing during the copy-over process in which I'm not convinced it was the best route of migration, but nonetheless we are where we are. Can anyone suggest potential avenues of solutions to resolve this issue? Thank you. I'd like to perform noise-reduction and minor editing outside of PowerPoint. Has Microsoft removed the "link narrations" option from PowerPoint 2010?
