• Few specific questions on how games are developed

  When it comes to programming games from the old school sega games like sonic to indie games or angry birds or even to more advance games like Diablo, how exactly is level design done? As in, are the levels sometimes designed straight out of code in an IDE? Or do they create a visual level design editor where things can be placed at the click of a mouse button? I'm imagining old school games or very simple ones like indies are done via code, where extremely complicated ones require a visual editor. Is this correct? Also, when it comes to libraries like SDL or XNA, how often are these used rather than just utilizing OpenGL or DirectX? What about creating your own game engine vs utilizing one already made? Do most use already built engines? This question is directed toward the whole gaming spectrum of indie/big game development. Thanks.

• LAMP Stack Location

  I have installed the LAMP stack on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using the tasksel command. I checked - it works. But I cant find the location of the installaton, I worked with WAMP - there you have a separate folder for Apache, for PHP and for mysql. Now I cant even find where to put the documents I create. Which folder is used to contain my web projects? How to start MySQL console and where to look for its installation directory? Which directories are PHP and Apache installed in? how to erase LAMP stack? I found out that some of the parts of the stack are installed in the root/var and root/etc directories: How can I install the whole LAMP stack in /home?

• Do higher resolution laptop displays matter for programmers?

  I'm buying a new laptop that I'll be using mainly for programming. A couple of options that really intrigue me are the Asus Zenbook UX31A and the new Retina Macbook Pro. It's obvious that the high-resolution displays on these laptops is useful for entertainment, photo-editing, and other things. My question is this: Do these displays provide any benefit for programmers? Do these displays make code any easier to read? Are they any easier on the eyes after a whole day of staring at the screen?

• Can I remove visible referer from link?

  I use referer info to track which of my campaigns works the best. So instead of <a href="someweb.com">someweb</a> I have a link like <a href="http://someweb.com?utm_source=john&utm_medium=email&utm_content=NAME&utm_campaign=campaing">someweb</a> Now when a user cliks "someweb" the whole URL string is shown in the adressbar. Is this possible to mask/hide somehow? Maybe via .htaccss? Thanks in advance

And I would like to rectify that - an idea is to start an open source group by training college students (for no charge) and developing some open source application with them. • Return to the old C days.

  Long back I used to program on C and than VB exploitation changed the career path. After VB came the .NET that proved to be a HoneyPot of Microsoft for old VB programmers and frustrated programmers of other hard to learn languages. The label on this HoneyPot was: "Getting things done." I now want to contribute to the Linux and other GNU projects. I feel whatever programming language you learn today, but if programming is your bread-and-butter, you must remain in touch with C. Many things have changed now. From the old Turbo-C for DOS to the present ...? Please advise me how to get back on the C track again. Reading again whole thing, chapter-by-chapter is not possible now, but I can learn by writing small utilities type of things, but sure GUI based. And yes, I hope, learning is going to be easy now with so many live forums and active community spots like StackOverflow etc.

• How to test the render speed of my solution in a web browser?

  Ok, I need to test the speed of my solution in a web browser, but I have some problems, there are 2 versions of the web solution, the original one that is on server A and the "fixed" version that is on server B. I have VS2010 Ultimate, so I can make a web and load test on solution B, but I can't load the A solution on my IDE. I was trying to use fiddle2 and jmeter, but they only gave me the times of the request and response of the browsers with the server, I also want the time it takes to the browser to render the whole page. Maybe I'm misusing some of this tools... I don't know if this could be usefull but: Solution A is on VB 6.0 Solution B is on VB.Net Thanks in advance!

• Web Hosting Backup/Disaster Recovery Plan - Which Company?

  I've been asked to look after consolidating all of our various company websites onto one host and also provide a disaster recover plan in case the chosen host goes down/out of business/etc. We're most likely going to go with HostGator as our chosen host, however, I'm not sure who to pick for our backup host. HostGator uses cPanel and has the functionality to provide regular full (ie: including configuration) backups of all the sites we host. Ideally I'm looking for a solution where we can provide these backups to another company and within a short period of time they restore all the sites onto their servers and we're back up and running. The whole disaster recover process has to be fairly straight forward from the point of view of what we need to do in case I am unavailable to assist in the disaster recovery process and no one else overly technical is available to assist (ie: take these backup files, send them to this company, and ask them to do this). Any suggestions on which company would be a good choice for this backup solution would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Harry

• MSCC: Career & IT Fair 2014

  Already a couple of weeks ago, I've been addressed by Ibraahim and Yunus to see whether it would be interesting to participate in the 1st Career & IT Fair organised by the UoM Computer Club. Well, luckily we met at the Global Windows Azure Bootcamp and I wasn't too sure whether it would be possible for me to attend after all. The main reason is given because of work demand and furthermore due to the fact that the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community currently has no advertising material at all. Here's the brief statement of the event: "The UOM Students' Computer Club in collaboration with the UOM Students' Union and UOM CSE Department is organising a 'Career & IT Fair' on the 23rd and 24th April 2014. This event has for objective to provide a platform to tertiary students, secondary students as well as vocational students, the opportunity to meet job recruiters." Luckily, I was reminded that the 23rd is a Wednesday, and therefore I decided that it might be interesting to move our weekly Code & Coffee session to the university and hence be able to attend the career fair. As it turned out it was a great choice and thankfully Pritvi, Nadim as well as Ishwon volunteered to be around at the "community booth". Thankfully, the computer club gave us - the MSCC and the LUGM - one of their spaces in the lobby area of the Paul Octave Wiéhé Auditorium. My impression about the event Very well and professionally organised. Seriously, the lads over at the UoM Computer Club did a great job in organising their 2 days event, and felt very comfortable at any time. Actually, it was kind of amusing to some of the members constantly running around and checking everything. Even though that the whole process went smooth and easy off the hand. There were a couple of interesting pieces of information and announcements during the opening ceremony. For example, the Computer Science faculty is a very young one and has been initiated back in 1988 only - just by 4 staff members at that time. Now, after 25 years they have achieved quite a lot and there are currently 1.000+ active students attending the numerous lectures and courses. But there is no room to rest on previous achievements, and I was kind of surprised to hear that there are plans to extend the campus, and offer new lectures in the fields of nanotechnology, big data handling, and - crossing fingers - the introduction and establishment of a space control centre. Mauritius is already part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and hopefully there will be more activities into that direction in the near future. Community - Awareness and collaboration As stated earlier, I could only spent one morning but luckily other members of the MSCC and the LUGM stayed during the whole two days and provided answers to any interested person. As for me, I took the opportunity to get in touch with the other companies in the lobby. Mainly, to create some awareness about our IT communities but also to see whether there might be options for future engagement in common activities, too. So far, I was able to speak to representatives of the following companies: ACCA Mauritius Business at Work Infomil LinkByNet Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands & French Pacific Spherinity Training Institute Spoon Consulting Ltd. State Informatics Ltd. Unfortunately, I only had a quick chat with an HR representative of LinkByNet but I fully count on our MSCC members like Nitin or LUGM member Ronny to spread our intentions over there.  So far, all of the representatives were really interested in our concepts and activities and I'm currently catching up with an introduction flyer for the MSCC that I'm going to send out to all those contacts via mail. It would be great to have more craftsmen as well as professional support on board. Some pictures from the event MSCC: Fantastic outlook for the near future.   3 weeks of traveling through Asia and Australia - nearly 500 customers and partners in 8 workshops in Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shenzhen, Singapore, Melbourne, Perth and Manila. Great people in all places, many interesting discussions, several new reference prospects for Oracle Database 11g Release 2 - YOU should upgrade as well pretty soon :-) But now it's time to go home. We are a bit exhausted but we really enjoyed it talking to and with you. And I'd suppose we'll meet again the sooner or later. Thanks to everybody - and special thanks to the local colleagues and especially to Abe-san, Kota-san, Blair Layton and Shaheen Ismail for taking care on us, organizing our workshops and the whole setup!!!

  Well the question is in the title - how do I improve my code reading skills. The software/hardware environment I currently do development in is quite slow with respect to compilation times and time it takes the whole system to test. The system is quite old/complex and thus splitting it into a several smaller, more manageable sub-projects is not feasible in a neare future. I have realized is what really hinders the development progress is my code reading skills. How do I improve my code reading skills, so I can spot most of the errors and issues in the code even before I hit the "do compile" key, even before I start the debugger?

• How to make a disk image and restore from it later?

  I'm a new Linux user. I've reinstalled my Wubi from scratch at least ten times the last few weeks because while getting the system up and running (drivers, resolution, etc.) I've broken something (X, grub, unknowns) and I can't get it back to work. Especially for a newbie like me, it's easier (and much faster) to just reinstall the whole shebang than try to troubleshoot several layers of failed "fixing" attempts. Coming from Windows, I expect that there is some "disk image" utility that I can run to make a snapshot of my Linux install (and of the boot partition!!) before I meddle with stuff. Then, after I've foobar'ed my machine, I would somehow restore my machine back to that working snapshot. What's the Linux equivalent of Windows disk imagers like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost?

• Why enumerator structs are a really bad idea

  If you've ever poked around the .NET class libraries in Reflector, I'm sure you would have noticed that the generic collection classes all have implementations of their IEnumerator as a struct rather than a class. As you will see, this design decision has some rather unfortunate side effects... As is generally known in the .NET world, mutable structs are a Very Bad Idea; and there are several other blogs around explaining this (Eric Lippert's blog post explains the problem quite well). In the BCL, the generic collection enumerators are all mutable structs, as they need to keep track of where they are in the collection. This bit me quite hard when I was coding a wrapper around a LinkedList<int>.Enumerator. It boils down to this code: sealed class EnumeratorWrapper : IEnumerator<int> { private readonly LinkedList<int>.Enumerator m_Enumerator; public EnumeratorWrapper(LinkedList<int> linkedList) { m_Enumerator = linkedList.GetEnumerator(); } public int Current { get { return m_Enumerator.Current; } } object System.Collections.IEnumerator.Current { get { return Current; } } public bool MoveNext() { return m_Enumerator.MoveNext(); } public void Reset() { ((System.Collections.IEnumerator)m_Enumerator).Reset(); } public void Dispose() { m_Enumerator.Dispose(); } } The key line here is the MoveNext method. When I initially coded this, I thought that the call to m_Enumerator.MoveNext() would alter the enumerator state in the m_Enumerator class variable and so the enumeration would proceed in an orderly fashion through the collection. However, when I ran this code it went into an infinite loop - the m_Enumerator.MoveNext() call wasn't actually changing the state in the m_Enumerator variable at all, and my code was looping forever on the first collection element. It was only after disassembling that method that I found out what was going on The MoveNext method above results in the following IL: .method public hidebysig newslot virtual final instance bool MoveNext() cil managed { .maxstack 1 .locals init ( [0] bool CS$1$0000, [1] valuetype [System]System.Collections.Generic.LinkedList`1/Enumerator CS$0$0001) L_0000: nop L_0001: ldarg.0 L_0002: ldfld valuetype [System]System.Collections.Generic.LinkedList`1/Enumerator EnumeratorWrapper::m_Enumerator L_0007: stloc.1 L_0008: ldloca.s CS$0$0001 L_000a: call instance bool [System]System.Collections.Generic.LinkedList`1/Enumerator::MoveNext() L_000f: stloc.0 L_0010: br.s L_0012 L_0012: ldloc.0 L_0013: ret } Here, the important line is 0002 - m_Enumerator is accessed using the ldfld operator, which does the following: Finds the value of a field in the object whose reference is currently on the evaluation stack. So, what the MoveNext method is doing is the following: public bool MoveNext() { LinkedList<int>.Enumerator CS$0$0001 = this.m_Enumerator; bool CS$1$0000 = CS$0$0001.MoveNext(); return CS$1$0000; } The enumerator instance being modified by the call to MoveNext is the one stored in the CS$0$0001 variable on the stack, and not the one in the EnumeratorWrapper class instance. Hence why the state of m_Enumerator wasn't getting updated. Hmm, ok. Well, why is it doing this? If you have a read of Eric Lippert's blog post about this issue, you'll notice he quotes a few sections of the C# spec. In particular, 7.5.4: ...if the field is readonly and the reference occurs outside an instance constructor of the class in which the field is declared, then the result is a value, namely the value of the field I in the object referenced by E. And my m_Enumerator field is readonly! Indeed, if I remove the readonly from the class variable then the problem goes away, and the code works as expected. The IL confirms this: .method public hidebysig newslot virtual final instance bool MoveNext() cil managed { .maxstack 1 .locals init ( [0] bool CS$1$0000) L_0000: nop L_0001: ldarg.0 L_0002: ldflda valuetype [System]System.Collections.Generic.LinkedList`1/Enumerator EnumeratorWrapper::m_Enumerator L_0007: call instance bool [System]System.Collections.Generic.LinkedList`1/Enumerator::MoveNext() L_000c: stloc.0 L_000d: br.s L_000f L_000f: ldloc.0 L_0010: ret } Notice on line 0002, instead of the ldfld we had before, we've got a ldflda, which does this: Finds the address of a field in the object whose reference is currently on the evaluation stack. Instead of loading the value, we're loading the address of the m_Enumerator field. So now the call to MoveNext modifies the enumerator stored in the class rather than on the stack, and everything works as expected. Previously, I had thought enumerator structs were an odd but interesting feature of the BCL that I had used in the past to do linked list slices. However, effects like this only underline how dangerous mutable structs are, and I'm at a loss to explain why the enumerators were implemented as structs in the first place. (interestingly, the SortedList<TKey, TValue> enumerator is a struct but is private, which makes it even more odd - the only way it can be accessed is as a boxed IEnumerator!). I would love to hear people's theories as to why the enumerators are implemented in such a fashion. And bonus points if you can explain why LinkedList<int>.Enumerator.Reset is an explicit implementation but Dispose is implicit... Note to self: never ever ever code a mutable struct.

• Ubuntu 12.04.3 alongside Windows 8.1

  I brought a new Notebook which has pre-installed Windows 8.1 with an uefi* (-Bios) and secure boot*. (* can switch or turn so off, still no success) When i try to install Ubuntu 12.04.3, the installer doesn't recognize Windows 8.1. There were options, to delete the whole disk or do something else. The second option, shows a few partitions (NTFS) but no Windows. The Ubuntu 13.10 version even did start on my notebook, it gets frozen during start up. (I thought. maybe the newer one will recognize Windows.) I'm not very confident in manipulating grub, I hope there is an easy way or an easy description. • multipass shadow mapping renderer in XNA

  I am wanting to implement a multipass renderer in XNA (additive blending combines the contributions from each light). I have the renderer working without any shadows, but when I try to add shadow mapping support I run into an issue with switching render targets to draw the shadow maps. When I switch render targets, I lose the contents of the backbuffer which ruins the whole additive blending idea. For example: Draw() { DrawAmbientLighting() foreach (DirectionalLight) { DrawDirectionalShadowMap() // <-- I lose all previous lighting contributions when I switch to the shadow map render target here DrawDirectionalLighting() } } Is there any way around my issue? (I could render all the shadow maps first, but then I have to make and hold onto a render target for each light that casts a shadow--is this the only way?)

• Redirect from https://mydomain.com to http://mydomain.com

  Many of my visitors have bookmarked my site already wtih https://mydomain.com. Under the bad advice of a programmer, I put my whole Joomla site under ssl. I do not sell anything or provide any member services. I asked him many times if it would slow my site down - he said it wouldn't. I knew it did, I've researched on this site and realized it does slow the site down because of no cache of the pages. Understood. Please, someone tell me how to get away from it now. I'm not sure how to approach this, should I add something to my htaccess or my main index.php file? I've looked all over the net, there is much advice for adding redirectives for going from http to https, but very few answers regarding the opposite of going from https to http. Thank you very much for your time. I appreciate it.

• Is it safe to resize root partition?

  My HDD is partitioned into two equal sized partitions. First is being used for Windows and Second for Ubuntu. Everything is working fine. But now I want to remove Windows and use the disk completely for Ubuntu. I can easily boot from live cd and use GParted to delete Windows partition and then expand Ubuntu partition to use the whole hard disk. But I want to know if its safe i.e Will resizing Ubuntu partition change any thing else like the partition UUID or any thing else? Do I need to reinstall grub after resizing the root partition? It would be great if some one who has already done this can give their advice here.

• Backup files with rsync: error 23

  Hi I'm trying to make a backup of my /home to transfer all data from one computer to another. I wanted to save the backup on the same computer and than transfere it to another one. For safety reasons, I'm trying to learn how does it work on the computer without a lot of data (the new one) to be sure I won't delete something instead of copying it. I've run in terminal: sudo rsync -avz /home/maria /home/guest/backup and I had as the result: sent 58797801 bytes received 23050 bytes 4705668.08 bytes/sec total size is 100202958 speedup is 1.70 rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1060) [sender=3.0.7] I've tried once again, with the same result. I have no idea, which files were not transferred, what makes the whole backup useless for me (I wanted to do it automatically in order not to forget about something and loose it). On both computers I have the same system (Ubuntu 10.04). Rsync version: 3.0.7-1ubuntu1. Thanks for any tips

• Convert filenames to their checksum before saving to prevent duplicates. Is is a smart thing to do?

  TL;DR:what the title says I am developing some sort of image board in PHP. I was thinking of changing each image's filename to it's checksum prior to saving it. This way, I might be able to prevent duplicates. I know this wouldn't work for two images that are the same but differ in size or level of compression or whatnot, but this method would allow for an early check. What bugs me is that I never saw this method implemented anywhere, so I was wondering if there is a catch to it. Maybe it is just more efficient to keep the original filename and store the hash in DB? Maybe the whole method is just not useful and my question is moot? What do you think? On a side note, I don't really get how hashes are calculated so I was wondering, if my first question checks out, if it would be possible to calculate the likeness that two images are similar by comparing hashes (levenshtein or something of the sort).

• Screencast several application windows at once in Microsoft Windows

  I have several (20+) applications running on a Microsoft Windows PC. What I would like is a solution that allows me to broadcast the window of each application in a webpage, in readonly mode (there's no need for the users to interact with it). This should work even if the application is in the background, seeing that there's no way to fit all of them on the screen. I performed very extensive searching, from simple screencasting apps such as Camtasia, CamStudio or VHScrCap to things like VNC (haven't found any server able to broadcast multiple windows at once, much less background windows) and even application virtualization, but in the end I haven't found anything that fits my needs. Most solutions that allow capturing a window instead of the whole desktop will not let you capture multiple windows but only a single window and on top of that they don't even work when the window is in the background.

• Building TrueCrypt on Ubuntu 13.10

  With the whole NSA thing people tried to re-build identically looking binaries to the ones which truecrypt.org provides, but didn't succeed. So some think they might be compiled with back-doors which are not in the source code. - So how compile on the latest Ubuntu version (I'm using UbuntuGNOME but that shouldn't matter)? • General visual effects to meshes/entities

  I am trying to add some visual effects to some entities, meshes, or whatever you want to call them as they are looking pretty dull in my game right now. What I want to achieve is this: http://youtu.be/zox8935PLw0?t=36s (the "texture" gets disintegrated and then goes back to normal, covering the whole mesh.) Also I would like to know what is the best way to add effects like the one in the video to my game (for example, thunder effects, shattering, etc.) I know that I can do some things with shaders, but I haven't learned them too well and I am still in a beginner level.
