  • How to check whether a default browser is opened in the operating system (Java)?

    - by stempel1984
    Hi, I am newbie here. During my work, I faced an interesting problem. I need to: check whether a default html browser is opened; check whether the browser is minimized/maximized (simply, a window's state); get an url address typed in the browser. If any of these conditions is not met, I have to open the browser in a maximized view with a desired url address. I primarily wanted to do all this in Java, but it came to my mind that I should employ many techniques/technologies and combine them appropriately to complete the functionality. But, which ones? That's the problem. I just recalled Windows API, but I'm not sure if it is of any help... Some users on another forum suggested that I should consider JNI (no experience at all)... I only know how to open a default browser (e.g. with use of the 'browse(URI uri)' method of the 'java.awt.Desktop' class) - that's too little to be proud of. Please give me some hints, maybe links to reasonable discussions, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions how to approach the problem.

  • Adding objects to the environment at timed intervals

    - by david
    I am using an ArrayList to handle objects and at each interval of 120 frames, I am adding a new object of the same type at a random location along the z-axis of 60. The problem is, it doesn't add just 1. It depends on how many are in the list. If I kill the Fox before the time interval when one is supposed to spawn comes, then no Fox will be spawned. If I don't kill any foxes, it grows exponentially. I only want one Fox to be added every 120 frames. This problem never happened before when I created new ones and added them to the environment. Any insights? Here is my code: /**** FOX CLASS ****/ import env3d.EnvObject; import java.util.ArrayList; public class Fox extends Creature { private int frame = 0; public Fox(double x, double y, double z) { super(x, y, z); // Must use the mutator as the fields have private access // in the parent class setTexture("models/fox/fox.png"); setModel("models/fox/fox.obj"); setScale(1.4); } public void move(ArrayList<Creature> creatures, ArrayList<Creature> dead_creatures, ArrayList<Creature> new_creatures) { frame++; setX(getX()-0.2); setRotateY(270); if (frame > 120) { Fox f = new Fox(60, 1, (int)(Math.random()*28)+1); new_creatures.add(f); frame = 0; } for (Creature c : creatures) { if (this.distance(c) < this.getScale()+c.getScale() && c instanceof Tux) { dead_creatures.add(c); } } for (Creature c : creatures) { if (c.getX() < 1 && c instanceof Fox) { dead_creatures.add(c); } } } } import env3d.Env; import java.util.ArrayList; import org.lwjgl.input.Keyboard; /** * A predator and prey simulation. • 8-Puzzle Solution executes infinitely [migrated]

    - by Ashwin
    I am looking for a solution to 8-puzzle problem using the A* Algorithm. I found this project on the internet. Please see the files - proj1 and EightPuzzle. The proj1 contains the entry point for the program(the main() function) and EightPuzzle describes a particular state of the puzzle. Each state is an object of the 8-puzzle. I feel that there is nothing wrong in the logic. But it loops forever for these two inputs that I have tried : {8,2,7,5,1,6,3,0,4} and {3,1,6,8,4,5,7,2,0}. Both of them are valid input states. What is wrong with the code? Note For better viewing copy the code in a Notepad++ or some other text editor(which has the capability to recognize java source file) because there are lot of comments in the code. Since A* requires a heuristic, they have provided the option of using manhattan distance and a heuristic that calculates the number of misplaced tiles. And to ensure that the best heuristic is executed first, they have implemented a PriorityQueue. The compareTo() function is implemented in the EightPuzzle class. The input to the program can be changed by changing the value of p1d in the main() function of proj1 class. The reason I am telling that there exists solution for the two my above inputs is because the applet here solves them. Please ensure that you select 8-puzzle from teh options in the applet. EDITI gave this input {0,5,7,6,8,1,2,4,3}. It took about 10 seconds and gave a result with 26 moves. But the applet gave a result with 24 moves in 0.0001 seconds with A*. For quick reference I have pasted the the two classes without the comments : EightPuzzle import java.util.*; public class EightPuzzle implements Comparable <Object> { int[] puzzle = new int[9]; int h_n= 0; int hueristic_type = 0; int g_n = 0; int f_n = 0; EightPuzzle parent = null; public EightPuzzle(int[] p, int h_type, int cost) { this.puzzle = p; this.hueristic_type = h_type; this.h_n = (h_type == 1) ? • Is shipping a Clojure desktop app realistic?

    - by Cedric Martin
    I'm currently shipping a desktop Java application. It is a plain old Java 5 Java / Swing app and so far everything worked nicely. Java 5 was targetted because some users were on OS X version / computers that shall never have Java 6 (we may lift this limitation soon and switch to a newer Java and simply abandoning my users stuck with Java 5). I'm quickly getting up to speed with Clojure but I haven't really done lots of Clojure-to-Java and Java-to-Clojure yet and I was wondering if it was realistic to ship a Clojure desktop application instead of a Java application? The application I'm shipping is currently about 12 MB with all the .jar so adding Clojure doesn't seen to be too much of an issue. My plan would be to have Clojure call Java APIs: my application is already divided in several independent jars. If I understand correctly calling Clojure from Java is harder than calling Java code from Clojure which is why I'd basically rewrite all the UI (part of the UI, mixing Swing components and self-made BufferedImages needs to be rewritten anyway due to the rise of retina display), and do all the 'wiring' from Clojure. So that's the problem I'm facing: is it realistic to ship a Clojure desktop app? (it certainly doesn't seem to be very widespread but then shipping plain Java desktop apps ain't that common either and I'm doing it anyway) Technically, what would need to be done? (compared to shipping a Java app)

  • The JavaOne 2012 Sunday Technical Keynote

    - by Janice J. Heiss
    At the JavaOne 2012 Sunday Technical Keynote, held at the Masonic Auditorium, Mark Reinhold, Chief Architect, Java Platform Group, stated that they were going to do things a bit differently--"rather than 20 minutes of SE, and 20 minutes of FX, and 20 minutes of EE, we're going to mix it up a little," he said. "For much of it, we're going to be showing a single application, to show off some of the great work that's been done in the last year, and how Java can scale well--from the cloud all the way down to some very small embedded devices, and how JavaFX scales right along with it."Richard Bair and Jasper Potts from the JavaFX team demonstrated a JavaOne schedule builder application with impressive navigation, animation, pop-overs, and transitions. They noted that the application runs seamlessly on either Windows or Macs, running Java 7. They then ran the same application on an Ubuntu Linux machine--"it just works," said Blair.The JavaFX duo next put the recently released JavaFX Scene Builder through its paces -- dragging and dropping various image assets to build the application's UI, then fine tuning a CSS file for the finished look and feel. Among many other new features, in the past six months, JavaFX has released support for H.264 and HTTP live streaming, "so you can get all the real media playing inside your JavaFX application," said Bair. And in their developer preview builds of JavaFX 8, they've now split the rendering thread from the UI thread, to better take advantage of multi-core architectures.Next, Brian Goetz, Java Language Architect, explored language and library features planned for Java SE 8, including Lambda expressions and better parallel libraries. These feature changes both simplify code and free-up libraries to more effectively use parallelism. "It's currently still a lot of work to convert an application from serial to parallel," noted Goetz.Reinhold had previously boasted of Java scaling down to "small embedded devices," so Blair and Potts next ran their schedule builder application on a small embedded PandaBoard system with an OMAP4 chip set. Connected to a touch screen, the embedded board ran the same JavaFX application previously seen on the desktop systems, but now running on Java SE Embedded. (The systems can be seen and tried at four of the nearby JavaOne hotels.) Bob Vandette, Java Embedded Architect, then displayed a $25 Rasberry Pi ARM-based system running Java SE Embedded, noting the even greater need for the platform independence of Java in such highly varied embedded processor spaces. Reinhold and Vandetta discussed Project Jigsaw, the planned modularization of the Java SE platform, and its deferral from the Java 8 release to Java 9. Reinhold demonstrated the promise of Jigsaw by running a modularized demo version of the earlier schedule builder application on the resource constrained Rasberry Pi system--although the demo gods were not smiling down, and the application ultimately crashed.Reinhold urged developers to become involved in the Java 8 development process--getting the weekly builds, trying out their current code, and trying out the new features:http://openjdk.java.net/projects/jdk8http://openjdk.java.net/projects/jdk8/spechttp://jdk8.java.netFrom there, Arun Gupta explored Java EE. The primary themes of Java EE 7, Gupta stated, will be greater productivity, and HTML 5 functionality (WebSocket, JSON, and HTML 5 forms). Part of the planned productivity increase of the release will come from a reduction in writing boilerplate code--through the widespread use of dependency injection in the platform, along with default data sources and default connection factories. Gupta noted the inclusion of JAX-RS in the web profile, the changes and improvements found in JMS 2.0, as well as enhancements to Java EE 7 in terms of JPA 2.1 and EJB 3.2. GlassFish 4 is the reference implementation of Java EE 7, and currently includes WebSocket, JSON, JAX-RS 2.0, JMS 2.0, and more. The final release is targeted for Q2, 2013. Looking forward to Java EE 8, Gupta explored how the platform will provide multi-tenancy for applications, modularity based on Jigsaw, and cloud architecture. Meanwhile, Project Avatar is the group's incubator project for designing an end-to-end framework for building HTML 5 applications. Santiago Pericas-Geertsen joined Gupta to demonstrate their "Angry Bids" auction/live-bid/chat application using many of the enhancements of Java EE 7, along with an Avatar HTML 5 infrastructure, and running on the GlassFish reference implementation.Finally, Gupta covered Project Easel, an advanced tooling capability in NetBeans for HTML5. John Ceccarelli, NetBeans Engineering Director, joined Gupta to demonstrate creating an HTML 5 project from within NetBeans--formatting the project for both desktop and smartphone implementations. Ceccarelli noted that NetBeans 7.3 beta will be released later this week, and will include support for creating such HTML 5 project types. Gupta directed conference attendees to: http://glassfish.org/javaone2012 for everything about Java EE and GlassFish at JavaOne 2012.

  • Security Alert For CVE-2010-4476 Released

    - by eric.maurice
    Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle just released a Security Alert with a fix for the vulnerability CVE-2010-4476, which affects Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. This vulnerability is present in Java running on servers as well as standalone Java desktop applications. Its successful exploitation by a malicious attacker can result in a complete denial of service for the affected servers. While only recently publicly disclosed, a number of Internet sites have since then reproduced details about this vulnerability, including exploit codes, which may result in allowing a malicious attacker to create a denial of service condition against the targeted system. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that affected organizations apply this fix as soon as possible. Please note that a fix for this vulnerability will also be included in the upcoming Java Critical Patch Update (Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011), which will be released on February 15th 2011. Note that the impact of this vulnerability on desktops is minimal: the affected applications or applets running in Internet browsers for example, might stop responding and may need to be restarted; however the desktop itself will not be compromised (i.e. no compromise at the desktop OS level). Oracle therefore recommends that consumers use the Java auto-update mechanism to get this fix. This will prompt them to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability. JRE 6 update 24 will also be distributed with the Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011. For More Information: The Critical Patch Updates and Security Alerts page is located at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/alerts-086861.html The Advisory for Security Alert CVE-2010-4476 is located at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/alert-cve-2010-4476-305811.html More information on Oracle Software Security Assurance is located at http://www.oracle.com/us/support/assurance/index.html Consumers can go to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp to ensure that they have the latest version of Java running on their desktops. • When to use abstract classes instead of interfaces and extension methods in C#?

    - by Gulshan
    "Abstract class" and "interface" are similar type of ideas, while interface being more abstract. One need of abstract classes was to provide method implementations for the derived classes. But in C#, that need has also been reduced by lately introduced extension methods. So, in C#, when should we use abstract classes instead of using interfaces and extension methods associated with the interface? And now, we can use 'Properties' in interfaces also. A notable example of interface+ extension methods is the Heavily used IEnumerable and it's helper methods. You use Linq and it's all by this extension methods!

  • Huge Opportunity in Small Things

    - by Tori Wieldt
    Addressing the strong demand for Java in the embedded market, Oracle is hosting a new Java Embedded @ JavaOne event in San Francisco October 3-4. The event allows decision makers to attend the Java Embedded @ JavaOne business-focused program, while their IT/development staff can attend the technically-focused JavaOne conference. [Obligatory comment about suits & ties vs. jeans & T-shirts removed.] The two-day event includes keynotes, sessions and demonstrations. In his keynote this morning, Judson Althoff, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Alliances and Channels and Embedded Sales, Oracle explained  Devices are all around us - on 24x7, connected all the time. The explosion of devices is the next IT revolution. Java is the right solution for this space. Java embedded solutions provide a framework to  provision, manage, and secure devices.  Java embedded solutions also provide the ability to aggregate, process and analyze multitude of data.  Java is one platform to program them all. Terrance Barr, Java Evangelist and Java ME expert is enthusiastic about the huge opportunity, "It's the right time and right place for Java Embedded," he said, "Oracle is looking for partners who want to take advantage of this next wave in IT." The Embedded space continues to heat up. Today, Cinterion launched the EHS5, an ultra compact, high-speed M2M communication module providing secure wireless connectivity for a wide variety of industrial applications. Last week, Oracle announced Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2, a complete client Java runtime Optimized for resource-constrained, connected, embedded systems, Oracle Java Wireless Client 3.2, Oracle Java ME Software Development Kit (SDK) 3.2, and Oracle Java Embedded Suite 7.0 for larger embedded devices. • MVVM application architecture, where to put dependency injection configuration class, BusinessLayer and Common interfaces?

    - by gt.guybrush
    Planning my architecture for an MVVM application I come to this: MyApp.UI View MyApp.BusinessLayer ViewModel MyApp.DataAccessLayer RepositoryImplEF MyApp.DomainLayer DomainObject RepositoryInterface MyApp.Common Logging Security Utility (contains some reflection method used by many levels) CustomException MyApp.UnitTest I was inspired by Domain-driven-desing, test-driven-development and onion architecture but not sure to have done all well. I am not sure of a couple of things: where to put dependency injection configuration class? In the common project? where to put BusinessLayer interfaces? in Domain layer? where to put Common interfaces? in Domain layer? But Common in referenced from domain (for some reflection utilities and for DI if the response to 1. is yes) and circular reference isn't good

  • Problem receving in RXTX

    - by drhorrible
    I've been using RXTX for about a year now, without too many problems. I just started a new program to interact with a new piece of hardware, so I reused the connect() method I've used on my other projects, but I have a weird problem I've never seen before. The Problem The device works fine, because when I connect with hyperterminal, I send things and receive what I expect, and Serial Port Monitor(SPM) reflects this. However, when I run the simple hyperterminal-clone I wrote to diagnose the problem I'm having with my main app, bytes are sent, according to SPM, but nothing is received, and my SerialPortEventListener never fires. Even when I check for available data in the main loop, reader.ready() returns false. If I ignore this check, then I get an exception, details below. Relevant section of connect() method // Configure and open port port = (SerialPort) CommPortIdentifier.getPortIdentifier(name) .open(owner,1000) port.setSerialPortParams(baud, databits, stopbits, parity); port.setFlowControlMode(fc_mode); final BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader( new InputStreamReader( port.getInputStream(), "US-ASCII")); // Add listener to print received characters to screen port.addEventListener(new SerialPortEventListener(){ public void serialEvent(SerialPortEvent ev) { try { System.out.println("Received: "+br.readLine()); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } }); port.notifyOnDataAvailable(); Exception java.io.IOException: Underlying input stream returned zero bytes at sun.nio.cs.StreamDecoder.readBytes(StreamDecoder.java:268) at sun.nio.cs.StreamDecoder.implRead(StreamDecoder.java:306) at sun.nio.cs.StreamDecoder.read(StreamDecoder.java:158) at java.io.InputStreamReader.read(InputStreamReader.java:167) at java.io.BufferedReader.fill(BufferedReader.java:136) at java.io.BufferedReader.read(BufferedReader.java:157) at <my code> The big question (again) I think I've eliminated all possible hardware problems, so what could be wrong with my code, or the RXTX library? Edit: something interesting When I open hyperterminal after sending a bunch of commands from java that should have gotten responses, all of the responses appear immediately, as if they had been put in the buffer somewhere, but unavailable. Edit 2: Tried something new, same results I ran the code example found here, with the same results. No data came in, but when I switched to a new program, it came all at once. Edit 3 The hardware is fine, and even a different computer has the same problem. I am not using any sort of USB adapter. I've started using PortMon, too, and it's giving me some interesting results. Hyperterminal and RXTX are not using the same settings, and RXTX always polls the port, unlike HyperTerminal, but I still can't see what settings would affect this. As soon as I can isolate the configuration from the constant polling, I'll post my PortMon logs. Edit 4 Is it possible that some sort of Windows update in the last 3 months could have caused this? It has screwed up one of my MATLAB mex-based programs once. Edit 5 I've also noticed some things that are different between HyperTerminal, RXTX, and a separate program I found that communicates with the device (but doesn't do what I want, which is why I'm rolling my own program) HyperTerminal - set to no flow control, but Serial Port Monitor's RTS and DTR indicators are green Other program - not sure what settings it thinks it's using, but only SPM's RTS indicator is green RXTX - no matter what flow control I set, only SPM's CTS and DTR indicators are on. From Serial Port Monitor's help files (paraphrased): the indicators display the state of the serial control lines RTS - Request To Send CTS - Clear To Send DTR - Data Terminal Ready

  • How to make a character jump, both on objects and just normal jump.

    - by haxerflaxer
    Hi, I'm kind of a beginner when it comes to java programming, and I have a project in school where I'm going to create a game much like Icy Tower. And my question is, how am I going to write to make the character stand on the ground and be able to jump up on objects? Here's my code so far: Part one package Sprites; import java.awt.Image; import java.awt.event.KeyEvent; import javax.swing.ImageIcon; public class jumper { private String jump = "oka.png"; private int dx; private int dy; private int x; private int y; private Image image; public jumper() { ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(this.getClass().getResource(jump)); image = ii.getImage(); x = 50; y = 100; } public void move() { x += dx; y += dy; } public int getX() { return x; } public int getY() { return y; } public Image getImage() { return image; } public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) { int key = e.getKeyCode(); if (key == KeyEvent.VK_LEFT) { dx = -5; ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(this.getClass().getResource("oki.png")); image = ii.getImage(); } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_RIGHT){ dx = 5; ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(this.getClass().getResource("oka.png")); image = ii.getImage(); } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_SPACE) { dy = -5; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN) { dy = 5; } } public void keyReleased(KeyEvent e) { int key = e.getKeyCode(); if (key == KeyEvent.VK_LEFT) { dx = 0; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_RIGHT){ dx = 0; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_SPACE) { dy = 0; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN) { dy = 0; } } } Part two package Sprites; import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.Graphics2D; import java.awt.Toolkit; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import java.awt.event.KeyAdapter; import java.awt.event.KeyEvent; import javax.swing.JPanel; import javax.swing.Timer; public class board extends JPanel implements ActionListener { private Timer klocka; private jumper jumper; public board() { addKeyListener(new TAdapter()); setFocusable(true); setBackground(Color.WHITE); setDoubleBuffered(true); jumper = new jumper(); klocka = new Timer(5, this); klocka.start(); } public void paint(Graphics g) { super.paint(g); Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D)g; g2d.drawImage(jumper.getImage(), jumper.getX(), jumper.getY(), this); Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().sync(); g.dispose(); } public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { jumper.move(); repaint(); } private class TAdapter extends KeyAdapter { public void keyReleased(KeyEvent e) { jumper.keyReleased(e); } public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) { jumper.keyPressed(e); } } } Part three package Sprites; import javax.swing.JFrame; public class RType extends JFrame { public RType() { add(new board()); setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); setSize(800, 600); setLocationRelativeTo(null); setTitle("R - type"); setResizable(false); setVisible(true); } public static void main(String[] args) { new RType(); } } I really appreciate all the help I can get!

    - by haxerflaxer
    Hi, I'm kind of a beginner when it comes to java programming, and I have a project in school where I'm going to create a game much like Icy Tower. And my question is, how am I going to write to make the character stand on the ground and be able to jump up on objects? Here's my code so far: Part one package Sprites; import java.awt.Image; import java.awt.event.KeyEvent; import javax.swing.ImageIcon; public class jumper { private String jump = "oka.png"; private int dx; private int dy; private int x; private int y; private Image image; public jumper() { ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(this.getClass().getResource(jump)); image = ii.getImage(); x = 50; y = 100; } public void move() { x += dx; y += dy; } public int getX() { return x; } public int getY() { return y; } public Image getImage() { return image; } public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) { int key = e.getKeyCode(); if (key == KeyEvent.VK_LEFT) { dx = -5; ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(this.getClass().getResource("oki.png")); image = ii.getImage(); } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_RIGHT){ dx = 5; ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(this.getClass().getResource("oka.png")); image = ii.getImage(); } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_SPACE) { dy = -5; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN) { dy = 5; } } public void keyReleased(KeyEvent e) { int key = e.getKeyCode(); if (key == KeyEvent.VK_LEFT) { dx = 0; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_RIGHT){ dx = 0; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_SPACE) { dy = 0; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN) { dy = 0; } } } Part two package Sprites; import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.Graphics2D; import java.awt.Toolkit; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import java.awt.event.KeyAdapter; import java.awt.event.KeyEvent; import javax.swing.JPanel; import javax.swing.Timer; public class board extends JPanel implements ActionListener { private Timer klocka; private jumper jumper; public board() { addKeyListener(new TAdapter()); setFocusable(true); setBackground(Color.WHITE); setDoubleBuffered(true); jumper = new jumper(); klocka = new Timer(5, this); klocka.start(); } public void paint(Graphics g) { super.paint(g); Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D)g; g2d.drawImage(jumper.getImage(), jumper.getX(), jumper.getY(), this); Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().sync(); g.dispose(); } public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { jumper.move(); repaint(); } private class TAdapter extends KeyAdapter { public void keyReleased(KeyEvent e) { jumper.keyReleased(e); } public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) { jumper.keyPressed(e); } } } Part three package Sprites; import javax.swing.JFrame; public class RType extends JFrame { public RType() { add(new board()); setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); setSize(800, 600); setLocationRelativeTo(null); setTitle("R - type"); setResizable(false); setVisible(true); } public static void main(String[] args) { new RType(); } } I really appreciate all the help I can get!
