• Why is facebook cache buggy?

  I just started using facebook and I see that many times when I add something to my profile and visit it later its not there. I bet the reason is that the page is cached and not updated very often. Is this on purpose or is it a bug? P.S. For example I added the music I like and later I see that I did not add it, but next day when I visit again its there. I saw it in two web-browsers, so its a facebook bug. Does it has something to do with scalability?

• Make an agenda view google calendar entry display initially as if it had been clicked

  So I've got a google calendar embedded in my web page. It's set to agenda view so when you click on an entry it expands and shows you more information on the entry. I'd like to be able to link to the page w/ the embedded calendar from elsewhere, and have a specific entry already expanded (as if it had been clicked). Is this even possible? I'm not really sure where to start. PS: I don't have enough rep on this SE to create tags... and there isn't already a tag for "google-calendar"...

• Right-click acts too fast - No Fix Yet, Any Workaround?

  When I click the right mouse button (anywhere, be it - desktop, browser, console, etc.), the right-click context menu pops up so quickly that the very *first* option in the menu gets clicked. This happens too often to take it easy. This issue has been brought up a couple of times on Ask Ubuntu, but with no fix whatsoever. This is a very low priority issue for the Ubuntu team, I believe? (How could they?!) Is there at least a workaround for the issue? Ubuntu is almost unusable for me as it is now. PS: I have a new mouse. So, please don't go about suggesting that I get a new one - - everything's working fine on Windows 7, so should be the case with ubuntu 11.10, which it is not.

• Google-Calendar offline?

  How can I have my google-calendars availabe offline on my PC as well? I have been using dropbox to sync my calendars in ics-format between different PC's instead of using google calendar. The disadvantage of google-calendar is, that I can only see my appointments when online. Now I want to sync my calendars with my android device as well, what does not seem to be possible yet. So I am planning to have an online copy of all my appointments on Google-Calendar, in order to sync them with my Android device. At the same time I want to be able to access my appointments offline (have an offline copy of each calendar on my PC's synced via Dropbox). Is there a way to automatically duplicate and sync Coogle-Calendars with Ubuntu to achieve this?   Let's say that we have a regex and an index i , if we suppose that the set of string that match our regex are sorted in a lexicographical order, how could we get the i element of this list ? Edit : I added this simple example for more explanation : input : regex="[a-c]{1,2}"; index=4; in this case the ordered list of string that matches this regex contains those elements : a aa ab ac b ba bb bc c ca cb cc output : the 4th element which is ac ps: it's known that the string list that match the regex have infinite element, this doesn't have an impact on the proccess of extracting the element in the given index.

• New user to Linux Mint and Alinux

  which is better for a new Linux user, Linux Mint or Alinux i had trouble getting Alinux to run after install Mint ran fine. We are also with the Tucson Refugee ministry and we have computers given to us all the time then we reload the OS clean it up then we give them to the refugee families. We need something that will run on older computers with 256 or 512m of ram, and i do not want to use Micro Soft Please help. PS is there any other Linux OS you would recommend?????? • Cannot start ubuntu-desktop

  I am mainly a Windows technician and am trying to install ubuntu server. Everything worked fine and I can log in using the shell but when I installed ubuntu-desktop it just refuses to start? I did try startx and I get the message "server already running" I tried "start gdm" (what is this supposed to do?) and it comes back with "Job is already running: gdm" I know that the server version is not really for ubuntu-desktop but all our other servers are like that and I want it, is there any help out there? Ps. the server is running on a VM install that my IT department made for me and I connect to the machine shell using "Tera Ter Web 3.1" Thank you Jack

• Is it possible to learn maths via programming, or you should learn maths for programming?

  I am not the best in maths, not very horrid either, but lower than the average, I've always been thinking to improve my maths, but schools and books didn't do the job because I get bored too fast. The only thing I don't get bored with is coding and gaming, so I thought what if coding a program that solves mathematical problems will help me understand maths better, most of these problems are limits (calculus), functions, Differential calculus, and some other subjects (I already said am not that good) similar to the previous noted. My question is: Am I able to achieve a better knowledge in maths if I do some specific program coding, and if possible, is physics possible that way too? Or am I wrong and Maths should be learned before programming to help improve my coding? P.S : C++ is the preferred language.

  Firstly I should explain the background. I am interested in high frequency trading programming roles. After looking at many job specs it is very clear that there is a big demand for programmers who have programmed Java and C++ on Unix as opposed to Windows. My question is what are the differences a High Freq programmer would come across? It cannot be something in the language itself because syntactically they do not differ over OS? Therefore I thought it must be something which the programming language has to interface, resources etc? Could anyone please help me out as I am trying to improve my C++/Java on Unix, in order to aim for this type of career? ps I'm guessing part of this answer lies with the socket infrastructure on Unix?

• Architecture for html5 multiplayer game?

  Hello I want to write a HTML5 multiplayer game in which there are rooms with two players answering a series of questions with 3 possible answers, 10sec/question, which are being downloaded from a server. It will have some ratings and so on. I want to make it as scalable as possible. I wonder what technologies to use to accomplish that. HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript obviously. But what about the server-side? I have been researching and found that Socket.IO + Node.js + mongoDB would do the job but after doing some more research it maybe not. Can you suggest me some kind of architecture for doing this game? Free technologies, if possible. Or what to read and from where to start in order to understand how to do it. Thanx in advance! P.S. I have an experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, C#, ASP.NET MVC and relational db's.

• Problems with No-IP redirecting

  I am setting up a webserver on my ubuntu desktop 13.04, everything is working fine except; When trying to access the server through the external host using no-ip, it gives the original index created by apache on setup. While when I try to connect to the server via my real IP address from externally, it goes to the correct index. I have been trying to figure out what the issue is on this problem as nothing is working because of that bad redirect, I'm wondering if anyone of you could help me out, or advise me in the right path. • Using normals in DirectX 10

  I've got a working OBJ loader that loads vertices, indices, texture coordinates, and normals. As of right now it doesn't process texture coordinates or normals but it stores them in arrays and creates a valid mesh with the vertices and indices. Now I am trying to figure out how can I make the shader use the correct normal in the array for the current vertex if I can't setnormals() to my mesh. If I were to just use an index in my array of normals corresponding to the index in the vertices, how would I retrieve the current index the shader is processing? BTW: I am trying to write a blinn-phong shader technique. Also when I create the input layout and I've added the semantic NORMAL to it, how would I list the multiple semantics in that single parameter? Would I just separate it with a space? PS: If you need to see any code, just let me know.

• What method do I use to manage an app-specific background process?

  I am developing an application with different behavior depending on the arguments : "-config" starts a Gtk window to change options, start and close the daemon. "-daemon" starts a background process that does something every X minutes. I already know how to use fork/system/exec etc... But I would like to know the main logic of such application to : restart or refresh the daemon when configuration change. keep only one instance of the daemon. I have read that killing the daemon to restart it is not a clean way to do. How other applications do ? (ubuntuone, weather forecast, rss feed working with notification area) Thanks for your help. PS : I don't want to create a system-wide daemon, just a user application with a background process.

  Possible Duplicate: How bad is it to use display: none in CSS? I have heard that using display:none or visibility:hidden css properties are not a very good idea for seo purposes. I have about 4 different pop up windows to display and each one has about 20 words inside it. I can create hidden divs. Another option is to store div html elements as javascript string. In this way pop up html elements will be generated from javascript string. This will be still faster than using ajax since the data is static. Is this method absolutely safe for SEO? P.S.: I was just asking about similar question on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12389075/storing-data-in-javascript-array-for-further-use, but this one is different, it is about static data and about SEO.

• Synaptics touchpad sensitivity. Issue?

  Just installed 12.04 LTS and I experience some problems with my touchpad. Everytime I tap/double tap the touch the cursor is moving around (not static as should be) (for example if I want to close a window, I click on "x" button from touchpad, the cursor is moving and not always hit the "x" button). Touchpad buttons left click, right click are working well, but tap not. Did u guys experience the same problem? Is there something related to sensitivity? How to fix it? PS: on Ubuntu 11.10 didn't had this issue

• Attempting to GREP details of a Java error

  I'm running Ubuntu 11 and I'm having some issues with grep. I have a shell script (see below) which essentially checks if a certain Java program of mine is running, if not it runs it. That part works out great! If my Java application throws any kind of exception however I would like to capture that information and email it to myself. How can I go about checking to see if the call to java -jar /bin/MyApp.jar fails? I tried piping it to grep, but that doesn't seem to work. • Control external monitor brightness

  Hello Ubuntu community, I can control the brightness of my DELL U2713HM connected with DisplayPort via the command: ddccontrol -p -r 0x10 -w 53 where in this example the number 53 represents the brightness level (range 0 to 100). But I don't know how to link the command to my brightness keys on my keyboard. I searched already, but just found answers to integrated laptop screens. In /sys/class/backlight is the folder acpi_video0 with some subfolders and files. The file actual_brightness contains a number from 0 to 20, which is changing when I press the brightness keys. How do I get my external monitor listed as a device in /sys/class/backlight ? PS: I am running a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 install with integrated graphics Intel HD4000.

  guys i would like to encrypt my windows partition only , as i have dual boot windows 7 ultimate and ubuntu 12.04. I would like to encrypt all my windows partition with truecrypt as i suppose you already now , but i was wondering how will it work ? I suppose when i am gonna encrypt the whole partition of windows with true crypt , when i will boot linux grub will not find the partition ?! how can i do for the grub to find my partition windows encrypted ? thanks guys ps : basically more simple , i will encrypt my windows partition only , but grub will not detect anymore my windows partition?

• How can I get the name of the current terminal from command-line?

  Is there a possibility to get the type of terminal with a command? If I'm using gnome-terminal the output should be gnome-terminal or something similar. It would be also nice to get the version of the terminal. Update ps -aux | grep `ps -p $$ -o ppid=` will output something like this: user 4239 0.0 0.7 292708 15744 pts/8 Sl 11:39 0:02 xfce4-terminal user 4800 0.0 0.0 6176 820 pts/0 S+ 12:23 0:00 grep --color=auto 4239 This will also work with xterm, but i don't know how to get only the name (xfce4-terminal in this case).

  I'm just an average Joe when it comes to computing (maybe less then the average Joe) but I hate tap-to-click. In system and settings there is no touchpad tab? Is it true that this has been fixed? I'm using Dell inspiron N5110 xinput list: ? Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)] ? ? PS/2 Generic Mouse id=13 [slave pointer (2)] This is really strange because Dell is one of the top manufacturers in laptops and Ubuntu one of the top distros in Linux and Canonical claims that they are working closely with Dell.
