• Long-running transactions structured approach

  I'm looking for a structured approach to long-running (hours or more) transactions. As mentioned here, these type of interactions are usually handled by optimistic locking and manual merge strategies. It would be very handy to have some more structured approach to this type of problem using standard transactions. Various long-running interactions such as user registration, order confirmation etc. all have transaction-like semantics, and it is both error-prone and tedious to invent your own fragile manual roll-back and/or time-out/clean-up strategies. Taking a RDBMS as an example, I realize that it would be a major performance cost associated with keeping all the transactions open. As an alternative, I could imagine having a database supporting two isolation levels/strategies simultaneously, one for short-running and one for long-running conversations. Long-running conversations could then for instance have more strict limitations on data access to facilitate them taking more time (read-only semantics on some data, optimistic locking semantics etc). Are there any solutions which could do something similar?

  What is the best way to get an event from a child or grandchild module up to the parent Shell? For instance, if I have a view in a module that is actually 2 levels away from the Shell, and I have a Window behavior. Is the eventaggregator really the best way to do this? it seems like overkill. I just want my MainShell to watch for a change in the IsDialogOpen Property on the ViewModels in all my child modules. I feel like I am missing the trees for the forest...

• Survey on logging classes / frameworks / writers

  I am curious what writers (handlers, loggers) are you using. Text file and db its quite obvious, but what are other possibilities ? Firephp maybe (as in Zend_Log), mail, jabber, url ? Is anyone using syslog() or error_log() ? Are you using streams (especially custom ones) ? Are you using custom error levels or you limit yourself to predefined values? Are you logging common php errors / warning / notices? And last question - is there anything new in the town, worth consideration, apart of Zend_Log ? Or are you using your homebrew class?

• Will html5 change everything for designers?

  What impact do you think html5 will have on the workflow/way graphic design is done for the web? Right now most designers stay in an Adobe tool, doing most of the design work there, and implement some elements with graphics and some with code. Checking out http://www.apple.com/html5/ it seems that almost everything done in a graphic can be done in code. Will designers have to learn very advanced levels of html5 and do the actual design work in the browser or do you see a more "designer friendly" gui being made for html/graphics work? Will tools like photoshop evolve in a way that handles this new lack of image files?

  I wrote a Log class derived from System.Diagnostics.TraceListener like so public class Log : TraceListener This acts as a wrapper to Log4Net and allows people to use System.Diagnostics Tracing like so Trace.Listeners.Clear(); Trace.Listeners.Add(new Log("MyProgram")); Trace.TraceInformation("Program Starting"); There is a request to add additional tracing levels then the default Trace ones (Error,Warning,Information) I want to have this added to the System.Diagnostics.Trace so it can be used like Trace.TraceVerbose("blah blah"); Trace.TraceAlert("Alert!"); Is there any way I can do this with an extension class? I tried public static class TraceListenerExtensions { public static void TraceVerbose(this Trace trace) {} } but nothing is being exposed on the trace instance being passed in :(

• How to preselect nodes using jsTree jQuery plug-in

  I am using the jsTree jQuery plug-in with its "Checkbox" plug-in and using an async http request to lazy-load each level of the tree. All works great, except that I cannot get the tree to pre-select certain nodes after the first level. I am using the "selected" attribute to provide an array of ID's to preselect. ID's in the top level of the tree are correctly pre-selected. However, ID's in lower levels of the tree are not selected when the level loads. Am I missing something? • chomsky hierarchy and programming languages

  Hi, I'm trying to learn some aspects of the CH ( chomsky hierarchy ) which are related to PL ( programming languages ), and i still have to read the Dragon Book. I've read that most of the PL can be parsed as CFG ( context free grammar ). In term of computational power, it equals the one of a pushdown non deterministic automaton. Am I right ? If it's true, then how could a CFG holds a UG ( unrestricted grammar, which is turing complete ) ? I'm asking because, even if PL are CFG they are actually used to describe TM (turing machines ) and through UG. I think that's because of at least two different levels of computing, the first, which is the parsing of a CFG focuses on the syntax related to the structure ( representation ? ) of the language, while the other focuses on the semantic ( sense, interpretation of the data itself ? ) related to the capabilities of the pl which is turing complete. Again, are these assumptions rights ? thanx a lot.

• How should I load a xib into a detail view for a split view iPad objective app?

  I've got a split view iPad app with table view in the master pane. After drilling down several levels, each time loading a new .xib, I'd like one of the cells to trigger a web page load in the detail pane. Right now I can only get the web page .xib to load in the master pane side -- which is a master pain in my side. The basic load call where "URLWindow" is a class loaded with initWithNibName: [[self navigationController] pushViewController:URLWindow animated:YES]; I want to do this, but it doesn't seem to work: @interface @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet DetailViewController *detailViewController; ... @implementation [[self detailViewController] pushViewController:URLWindow animated:YES]; How should I be loading the URLWindow .xib into a detail view for a split view detail pane?

• In WPF RichTextBox, does overriding of Underline/Strikethrough work?

  In a WPF RichTextBox, the effective style of a Run of text is a result of combining the properties defined on the Run with the properties it "inherits" from the enclosing Paragraph and finally the styles on the Document. So you can set FontWeight to Bold at any of those levels. You can also set it Bold on the Paragraph and then switch it to Normal (override it) for a specific Run. However, underline and strikethrough are different. They are items that can optionally appear in a list of TextDecorations, which is a property of Inline (and hence Run) and of Paragraph, but not of Document. And you can switch on Underline in the Paragraph, and it gets inherited so that all Runs within that Paragraph default appear underlined by default. Is it possible to switch it off underline in a specific Run? i.e. is there a way to insert an entry into the list of TextDecorations which would mean "Don't underline", thus overriding the Paragraph's setting?

• Dump characters (glyphs) from TrueType font (TTF) into bitmaps

  I have a custom TrueType font (TTF) that consists of a bunch of icons, which I'd like to render as individual bitmaps (GIF, PNG, whatever) for use on the Web. You'd think this is a simple task, but apparently not? There is a huge slew of TTF-related software here: http://cg.scs.carleton.ca/~luc/ttsoftware.html But it's all varying levels of "not quite what I want", broken links and/or hard to impossible to compile on a modern Ubuntu box -- eg. dumpglyphs (C++) and ttfgif (C) both fail to compile due to obscure missing dependencies. Any ideas?

What changes can be done to the code to remove the duplicity in structure? • Setting Sql server security rights for multiple situations

  We have an application which uses an instance of Sql Server locally for its backend storage. The administrator windows login has had its sysadmin right revoked, and instead two sql logins have been created; one for the application with a secret password and one read only login we let users view the raw data with. This was working fine until we moved on FileStreams, which requires intergrated windows authentication. So now the sql server logins must be replaced. As a result, I am now reviewing all of our logins but I am not sure how it is possible. It seems that the application needs full read/write access, yet I still need to lock down writing to the tables so the user cannot login into the database and delete data randomly. Does anyone have any tips for setting multiple levels of security using intergrated windows logins, or can you direct me to any further reading? • Is there a way to replace the Eclipse JDT's code completion list with a multi-level tree?

  I know that the eclipse code completion widget can be customized to add new suggestions and even to change the order. I'm wondering whether there's a way to replace the current list format (or single-level tree, if this is a tree control) with a tree of multiple levels. Thus, for example, instead of selecting from a list of methods sorted by name, I will select from a category and then from a subcategory, and then from the items. I'm not too familiar with that part of the SDK, but I'd like to know if this is feasible. Thanks!

  I am wondering what makes sense in relation to what objects to expose through a WCF service - should I add WCF Serialization specifications to my business entities or should I implement a converter that maps my business entities to the DataContracts that I want to expose through my WCF service? Right now I have entities on different levels: DataAccess, Business and Contract. I have converters in place that can map entities from DataAccess to Business and from Business to Contract and vice versa. Implementing and Maintaining those is time consuming and pretty tedious. What are best practices in relation to this? If I were using an OR/M such as NHibernate or Entity Framework should I be exposing the entities from the ORM directly or should I abstract them the same way I am doing now? Thanks in advance.

It seems most texts cover the testing of application software where it is simpler to generate automated test cases or run a debugger. A book that provided solutions for improving quality in a system where the tests must be performed manually and therefore minimized would be ideal.

  The only method in a StreamGeometryContext that seems related to ellipses is the ArcTo method. Unfortunately it is heavily geared to joining lines rather than drawing ellipses. In particular, the position of the arc is determined by a starting and ending point. For a full ellipse the two coincide obviously, and the exact orientation becomes undefined. So far the best way of drawing an ellipse centered on 100,100 of size 10,10 that I found is like this: using (var ctx = geometry.Open()) { ctx.BeginFigure(new Point(100+5, 100), isFilled: true, isClosed: true); ctx.ArcTo( new Point(100 + 5*Math.Cos(0.01), 100 + 5*Math.Sin(0.01)), // need a small angle but large enough that the ellipse is positioned accurately new Size(10/2, 10/2), // docs say it should be 10,10 but in practice it appears that this should be half the desired width/height... 0, true, SweepDirection.Counterclockwise, true, true); } Which is pretty ugly, and also leaves a small "flat" area (although not visible at normal zoom levels).   Hi, I have a TreeVIew WPF with 2 Levels of Data. I have deleted the ToogleButton from the TreeViewItemTemplate. Now I'd like to expand / collapse the groups with a single mouse-click (not with a double click as the default behaviour).   Hi - I'm trying to read an image file and scale it by multiplying each byte by a scale its pixel levels by some absolute factor. • Creating multiple log files of different content with log4j

  Is there a way to configure log4j so that it outputs different levels of logging to different appenders? I'm trying to set up multiple log files. The main log file would catch all INFO and above messages for all classes. (In development, it would catch all DEBUG and above messages, and TRACE for specific classes.) Then, I would like to have a separate log file. That log file would catch all DEBUG messages for a specific subset of classes, and ignore all messages for any other class. • Nasty deep nested loop in Rails

  I have this nested loop that goes 4 levels deep to find all the image widgets and calculate their sizes. This seems really inefficient and nasty! I have thought of putting the organization_id in the widget model so I could just call something like organization.widgets.(named_scope), but I feel like that's a bad short cut. Is there a better way? • how to change strip.text labels in ggplot with facet and margin=TRUE

  I have looked here but still can't figure it out. How do I change the strip.text.x labels in a ggplot with faceting? Specifically I am using facet_grid with margins. The strip.text label for the margin is "(all)" - but since I am in a non-english speaking country I would rather write "Total" or something similar in my native tongue. opts(stip.text.x=c(levels(facetvariabel,"Total")) does not work. Any ideas? Example (not really the best dataset for this - but I guess it will work) ggplot(cars, aes(x=dist))+geom_bar()+facet_grid(.~speed, margin=T)
