• arp "who-has tell" on cloned machine

  I have a urgent problem to solve today, but I'm lost. Please help. I've cloned a Virtual Machine hosted on VM Ware ESXi 4.1 The OS is now Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS, but at the time of cloning it was 10.04 LTS. I fixed the MAC address manually inside /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. It is a known problem on Ubuntu. I had to remove the old MAC address and set the new one as eth0. Everything seems to work fine, except ARP. My provider OVH sent me a warning to resolve it today (this is the second day) or they will block my IP! The log contains many lines like this: Tue Jun 5 01:04:29 2012 : arp who-has 178.32.136.212 tell 178.32.136.224 where .224 is the cloned server that is causing problems, and .212 is the cloned one. arp -na returns: ? (178.33.230.254) at 00:07:b4:00:00:02 [ether] on eth0 ? (178.32.136.212) at 00:50:56:09:8e:f1 [ether] on eth0 The first IP is the ESXi machine. The second one should not be there. I'm not an expert and I don't know what else to do to fix this problem. Any help will be very appreciated. Thanks. I allocated a virtual disk of 500GB (stored at /var/lib/libvirt/images/vm1.img), and I'm finding that overkill, so now I'd like to free up some of that space for use with other virtual machines. There seems to be a lot answers on how to increase image storage, but not decrease it. I found the virt-resize tool, but it only seems to work with raw disk partitions, not disk images.

• Safari 4 starting up slowly on a Vista machine

  I have two PCs (different specs) with the latest Windows Vista and Safari 4 updates installed. In one machine, Safari 4 works great but in the other, it starts up slowly (less than a minute though) with harddisk sound indicating data access activities. I have cleared all internet caches and I am quite sure that there is no virus in both machines. Are there any other reasons that Safari performances are so different in comparably similar software and hardware environments?

  I am currently trying to figure out which solution would be best for software renting service (with proper licensing and stuff). I know its kinda stupid and so on, but I just have to develop it. Long story short - user can connect to a virtual machine (with windows guest os) using vnc and use some specific software for some specific time (eg., 1 hour). • Tuning Windows 7 for use in a VM

  I'm running Windows 7 in a VirtualBox Virtual Machine, and would like to make it run in a more streamlined fashion. I'll be using the install primarily for testing web apps, and have no need for it to run quickly. I would like it to run with minimal memory requirements, and with minimal changes to its virtual hard drive's contents. Changes to the hard drive contents, for example the paging file, result in larger snapshot sizes. Another recent post of mine seems to be related to this issue, but does not directly address issues with Windows. One concern that I have is that Windows seems to be using 17% of its paging file even with over 900MB of memory marked "Standby" or "Free". My uneducated guess is that this is being used to store indexes or some other data that helps to speed up the system but is not really necessary. I'm also wondering if it's normal for Windows to use over 500 MB of "In Use" memory with no apps running. Will this amount decrease if I reduce the amount of "installed" memory in the VM? What steps can I take to reduce the system's memory footprint without incurring an increase in paging file usage?

• Running a VM off a USB 2.0 Flash Drive - Mac/Parallels/XP

  I use a MacBook Air as my primary machine, and the 128GB SSD means space is precious. To save about 10 GB, I've been running Parallels with a Windows XP VM off an external USB hard drive, which performs as well in everyday use as running the VM off the internal SSD. So, I bought a tiny 32GB USB 2.0 flash drive, plugged it into the MacBook Air, formatted it first as ExFAT (which was slow), then as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (which was also slow), and copied over my VM file, and ran Parallels off it. My full experience is documented here: http://www.midwesternmac.com/blogs/jeff-geerling/running-windows-xp-vm Straight file copies are really fast — 30 MB/sec read (solid the whole time), and 10-11 MB/sec write (solid the whole time). But I noticed that once XP started running, the disk access rates were in the low KB ranges. Are USB flash drives really that poor at random access, or could I possibly be missing something (the format of the flash drive, etc.?)? Of note, I've tried the following, to no great effect: Formatting the drive as either ExFAT or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Unplugging all other USB devices and turning off Bluetooth (which runs on the right-side-port USB bus). Plugging in the flash drive either direct in the right side port, or the left side port, or into a USB 2.0 hub
