• Is it possible to remove buzzing from headphones which occurs only when scrolling / window redrawing?

  Whenever a lot of drawing is happening on my laptop a buzzing noise is emitted by the sound hardware, which is clearly audible with headphones (similar to this question or this one). I've tried both the headphone jack on the laptop itself, and also on the dock. I've used other laptops and they all seem to have similar problems here, which leads me to believe this is more a function of relatively low quality laptop sound hardware than any fault with the headphones or this laptop in particular. I'm curious if there's some piece of hardware I might use to eliminate the buzzing. For instance, would an external USB sound device fix the problem or is it likely subject to the same kinds of issues? Would a simple filter/choke on the headphone cord itself possibly help? Or is one simply stuck with poor quality audio from laptops period?

• tmux: Suddenly, cannot horizontally split

  As root, using a reasonably default .profile and .shrc and an empty tmux.conf, I am unable to split the window horizontally. There are a number of cases to consider so I'll list them clearly. root's .profile and .shrc, tmux works perfectly. Occasionally (twice out of the 50 or so times I've tested it), the splitting will work fine once in a session. (This happened for example when I ran ktrace on tmux, which I can also post) To explain the 'suddenly' part of the title: when I started my newly updated mysql56-server, tmux immediately exited and lost the session. Recently I changed architectures, from FreeBSD 10.0 i386 to amd64, and I am still working through shared library incompatibilities. I suspect that this could be involved, but I can't imagine how an incompatibility of this sort could result in such a specific, isolated failure.

• how to split a very large database on sql server

  I have a 90 GB SQL Server database that I want to make more manageable. It stores stock data from 50+ different stocks from 2009 and 2010, and each stock is a separate table. Some tables have hundreds of millions of rows, and other have just a few million. What I want to do is somehow split the database, so that I don't have a single database file that is 90 GB. What I want is to be able to somehow magically split all the tables so that I can backup the 2009 data once and not have to keep on including it in the backup every time I backup the entire database, however, I would like the 2009 data to be included whenever I do a query. Is partitioning the database the way to go? Will it do the above for me, or will I need some other solution? I research partitioning, but I wasn't sure if that would solve all my problems. I wasn't able to find anything that would tell me whether or not it would migrate prexisting data, or whether it only worked for newly inserted data. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.   Our company has a handful of field offices that have recently been setup with a regular internet connection after we removed the T1 and router that connected them directly to our network. Now, when the users are in the office, they log in to the VPN to be able to connect to the network. For the sake of them being able to print and scan from the local multi-function we have setup a split tunnel VPN. We currently have about 15-20 users using this setup around the country without any problems. Recently one of our users started having problems accessing internal programs/sites when connecting from both home and the office. There are three other users in the same office and they do not have this problem. I assumed that it was something with the computer and went ahead and replaced it with another of the same model. The computer worked fine in our home office; however, when the user received it, she had the exact same problem both at home and in the field office. Thinking it may be a NIC driver issue I sent her another computer, this time a different model, same problem occurred. If I update the host file to point to the correct paths, things will work, and if I connect via a normal VPN connection everything works, but the user cannot scan or print - which is a problem. Have tried to find ways to create another tunnel on a normal VPN and have tried to find ways to force the correct tunnel on the split tunnel VPN. It appears that there is something related to the ISP because if I connect to Comcast or Verizon it is fine but once she connects to Insite then she has problems. I have been unable to get any support from Insite as they don't feel the issue is with them. We use a Nortel VPN client. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

• Multiple Internet connections, multiple networks and split access in Linux

  I am having trouble setting up multiple internet connections for split access in Linux. We have 3 internet connections from 3 different ISP's. We want to configure our Linux gateway machine such that our three internal networks 10.2.1.0/24, 192.168.20.0/24 & 192.168.2.0/24 use ISP1, ISP2 and ISP3 respectively in a split access manner. Outlined below is the layout/settings, Interfaces of the Linux Gateway connected to Routers: eth0: 10.1.1.2<---------->10.1.1.1(Internal Interface of ADSL Router)[ISP1] eth1: 192.168.15.2<------>192.168.15.1(Internal Interface of 3G Router)[ISP2] eth3: 192.168.1.2<------->192.168.1.1(Internal Interface of ADSL Router)[ISP3] Kindly note that none of the interfaces in the Linux gateway has a public static IP address. Routers of ISP1 and ISP2 get assigned a dynamic public IP address when connected to the Internet, router of ISP3 has been assigned a public static IP address. Interface of Linux gateway connected to a switch, eth4: 10.2.1.1(LAN Interface for ISP1) eth4:0 192.168.20.1(LAN interface for ISP2) eth4:1 192.168.2.1(LAN Interface for ISP3) eth4:0 & eth4:1 are virtual interfaces with eth4 being the interface connected physically. • Strange sound behavior

  First of all, sorry for the tittle. English isn't my native language, and I can't find a word to describe the strange behavior I'm getting here. In the most simple explanation, is like sound keeps going down and up again... Think in a kid with that old radios that have a circled volume button. Think like these kid keeps "turning" the volume button. That is the behavior I'm getting here. At first, I believed that it was a pulseaudio issue, but, it isn't. I followed the wiki part I think that should be my problem, but it didn't work. After that, as I'm using XFCE, I didn't really need pulseaudio, so I removed it and stays with a clean alsa, hopping that will fix my problem. Sweet mistake. It really looks like a kid looking for trouble. I believed it worked, and, suddenly, here is the same issue again. BTW: I have a full-upgraded testing system (yeah, I upgraded to testing hopping for new pulseaudio version which fix the issue), no pulseaudio at all, just xfce, started with startxfce. What can I do to fix this? It's extremely annoying... sometimes I just want to throw my laptop in the wall because of this. Any extra info you need, please, tell me. • Computer making strange sound when turned on, ever since power outage

  Recently we experienced a power outage, and the PC was off. However, once the power came back, I switched on the PC and heard a strange noise - almost as if the hard disk or fans were struggling to work. I can't really describe the sound, but it's a laboured, loud sound almost like a jack-hammer. This has been persisting ever since the power outage, however the noise stops after around 10 minutes or so, and doesn't start again until the computer is turned off and on again. At first I thought it had something to do with the HDD, but all my files are intact, chkdsk did not report any issues and performance is 100% unchanged, even in games (so the gfx card is fine, and so is the HDD most likely). My PC setup basically has around 3 cooling fans, but I'm not sure if it's one of these either as the noise actually stops after 10 minutes or so, and if I leave the PC on for 4 hours (for example) the noise never starts again. It's there solely when turning on the PC. I haven't got a UPS, and it's important to note that the computer was not on when the power went out - it was merely plugged in. I then promptly unplugged the PC once the power was out, and only plugged it in again when the power came back. Could it be the power supply? Unfortunately I can't open my tower as I would void the warranty. Are there any tests which I could carry out without voiding the warranty?

• Watchguard Firebox "split" fibre optic line into 2 interfaces

  We have a requirement on our Watchguard Firebox XTM505 to be able to split our incoming external interface, in this case a fibre optic dedicated leased line, 100/100. We use the line in our office of approx 30 machines however we also re-sell to an external company who utilise it to provide wireless internet solutions to the public. The current infrastructure is as follows: Data in (Leased Line) - Juniper SRX210 managed by ISP - 1 cable out into unmanaged Netgear switch - 1 cable into our firewall and office network, 1 cable to our external providers core router managed by them. We have been informed that having the unmanaged switch in the position it is poses a security risk and that a good option would be to get our Watchguard Firewall to perform the split, by separating our office onto a trusted interface, and by "passing through" the external line to their managed router. It is alleged that the Watchguard is capable of doing this and also rate limiting the interfaces, i.e. 20mbps for the trusted interface and 80mbps for the "pass-through", however Watchguard technical support don't seem to be able to understand what we're trying to achieve. Can anyone provide any advice on whether this is possible on a Watchguard device and how or perhaps if there's a better way of achieving this, perhaps with a managed switch instead of unmanaged? • Reset sound volume in Windows 8

  There seems to be a bug in Windows 8 causing the maximum volume to become lower than it really should be. I'm now at a stage where I put the volume up to max and the sound is still very low. I have a couple of Logitech Z-10 speakers with a display on them and when I touch the increase volume button on that it shows me the volume (but not able to increase it) is actually below middle even though Windows claims it to be maxed out. Is there any way I can reset the volume in Windows 8 so that I can get it up fully max again? A registry setting or something? Really don't want to have to reinstall windows or drivers or anything like that cause if it is a bug it'll probably happen again and I really don't want to have to do that every time this happens :p Any ideas? Manged to fix it by unplugging the usb connection to my speakers, turning the volume down on my computer and up on the speakers, and finally reconnecting the usb connection. Seems to have been an issue with the speakers and not Windows this time. BUT, I'm still curious how you can adjust/reset the Windows 8 sound volume without using the volume controls. Like, where is the value of the current volume setting(s) really stored? And can you manually adjust them?

• Investigation: Can different combinations of components effect Dataflow performance?

  Introduction The Dataflow task is one of the core components (if not the core component) of SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and often the most misunderstood. This is not surprising, its an incredibly complicated beast and we’re abstracted away from that complexity via some boxes that go yellow red or green and that have some lines drawn between them. Example dataflow In this blog post I intend to look under that facade and get into some of the nuts and bolts of the Dataflow Task by investigating how the decisions we make when building our packages can affect performance. I will do this by comparing the performance of three dataflows that all have the same input, all produce the same output, but which all operate slightly differently by way of having different transformation components. I also want to use this blog post to challenge a common held opinion that I see perpetuated over and over again on the SSIS forum. That is, that people assume adding components to a dataflow will be detrimental to overall performance. Its not surprising that people think this –it is intuitive to think that more components means more work- however this is not a view that I share. I have always been of the opinion that there are many factors affecting dataflow duration and the number of components is actually one of the less important ones; having said that I have never proven that assertion and that is one reason for this investigation. I have actually seen evidence that some people think dataflow duration is simply a function of number of rows and number of components. I’ll happily call that one out as a myth even without any investigation!  The Setup I have a 2GB datafile which is a list of 4731904 (~4.7million) customer records with various attributes against them and it contains 2 columns that I am going to use for categorisation: [YearlyIncome] [BirthDate] The data file is a SSIS raw format file which I chose to use because it is the quickest way of getting data into a dataflow and given that I am testing the transformations, not the source or destination adapters, I want to minimise external influences as much as possible. In the test I will split the customers according to month of birth (12 of those) and whether or not their yearly income is above or below 50000 (2 of those); in other words I will be splitting them into 24 discrete categories and in order to do it I shall be using different combinations of SSIS’ Conditional Split and Derived Column transformation components. The 24 datapaths that occur will each input to a rowcount component, again because this is the least resource intensive means of terminating a datapath. The test is being carried out on a Dell XPS Studio laptop with a quad core (8 logical Procs) Intel Core i7 at 1.73GHz and Samsung SSD hard drive. Its running SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows 7. The Variables Here are the three combinations of components that I am going to test:     One Conditional Split - A single Conditional Split component CSPL Split by Month of Birth and income category that will use expressions on [YearlyIncome] & [BirthDate] to send each row to one of 24 outputs. This next screenshot displays the expression logic in use: Derived Column & Conditional Split - A Derived Column component DER Income Category that adds a new column [IncomeCategory] which will contain one of two possible text values {“LessThan50000”,”GreaterThan50000”} and uses [YearlyIncome] to determine which value each row should get. A Conditional Split component CSPL Split by Month of Birth and Income Category then uses that new column in conjunction with [BirthDate] to determine which of the same 24 outputs to send each row to. Put more simply, I am separating the Conditional Split of #1 into a Derived Column and a Conditional Split. The next screenshots display the expression logic in use: DER Income Category         CSPL Split by Month of Birth and Income Category       Three Conditional Splits - A Conditional Split component that produces two outputs based on [YearlyIncome], one for each Income Category. Each of those outputs will go to a further Conditional Split that splits the input into 12 outputs, one for each month of birth (identical logic in each). In this case then I am separating the single Conditional Split of #1 into three Conditional Split components. The next screenshots display the expression logic in use: CSPL Split by Income Category         CSPL Split by Month of Birth 1& 2       Each of these combinations will provide an input to one of the 24 rowcount components, just the same as before. For illustration here is a screenshot of the dataflow containing three Conditional Split components: As you can these dataflows have a fair bit of work to do and remember that they’re doing that work for 4.7million rows. I will execute each dataflow 10 times and use the average for comparison. I foresee three possible outcomes: The dataflow containing just one Conditional Split (i.e. #1) will be quicker There is no significant difference between any of them One of the two dataflows containing multiple transformation components will be quicker Regardless of which of those outcomes come to pass we will have learnt something and that makes this an interesting test to carry out. Note that I will be executing the dataflows using dtexec.exe rather than hitting F5 within BIDS. The Results and Analysis The table below shows all of the executions, 10 for each dataflow. It also shows the average for each along with a standard deviation. All durations are in seconds. I’m pasting a screenshot because I frankly can’t be bothered with the faffing about needed to make a presentable HTML table. It is plain to see from the average that the dataflow containing three conditional splits is significantly faster, the other two taking 43% and 52% longer respectively. This seems strange though, right? Why does the dataflow containing the most components outperform the other two by such a big margin? The answer is actually quite logical when you put some thought into it and I’ll explain that below. Before progressing, a side note. The standard deviation for the “Three Conditional Splits” dataflow is orders of magnitude smaller – indicating that performance for this dataflow can be predicted with much greater confidence too. The Explanation I refer you to the screenshot above that shows how CSPL Split by Month of Birth and salary category in the first dataflow is setup. Observe that there is a case for each combination of Month Of Date and Income Category – 24 in total. These expressions get evaluated in the order that they appear and hence if we assume that Month of Date and Income Category are uniformly distributed in the dataset we can deduce that the expected number of expression evaluations for each row is 12.5 i.e. 1 (the minimum) + 24 (the maximum) divided by 2 = 12.5. Now take a look at the screenshots for the second dataflow. We are doing one expression evaluation in DER Income Category and we have the same 24 cases in CSPL Split by Month of Birth and Income Category as we had before, only the expression differs slightly. In this case then we have 1 + 12.5 = 13.5 expected evaluations for each row – that would account for the slightly longer average execution time for this dataflow. Now onto the third dataflow, the quick one. CSPL Split by Income Category does a maximum of 2 expression evaluations thus the expected number of evaluations per row is 1.5. CSPL Split by Month of Birth 1 & CSPL Split by Month of Birth 2 both have less work to do than the previous Conditional Split components because they only have 12 cases to test for thus the expected number of expression evaluations is 6.5 There are two of them so total expected number of expression evaluations for this dataflow is 6.5 + 6.5 + 1.5 = 14.5. 14.5 is still more than 12.5 & 13.5 though so why is the third dataflow so much quicker? Simple, the conditional expressions in the first two dataflows have two boolean predicates to evaluate – one for Income Category and one for Month of Birth; the expressions in the Conditional Split in the third dataflow however only have one predicate thus they are doing a lot less work. To sum up, the difference in execution times can be attributed to the difference between: MONTH(BirthDate) == 1 && YearlyIncome <= 50000 and MONTH(BirthDate) == 1 In the first two dataflows YearlyIncome <= 50000 gets evaluated an average of 12.5 times for every row whereas in the third dataflow it is evaluated once and once only. Multiply those 11.5 extra operations by 4.7million rows and you get a significant amount of extra CPU cycles – that’s where our duration difference comes from. The Wrap-up The obvious point here is that adding new components to a dataflow isn’t necessarily going to make it go any slower, moreover you may be able to achieve significant improvements by splitting logic over multiple components rather than one. Performance tuning is all about reducing the amount of work that needs to be done and that doesn’t necessarily mean use less components, indeed sometimes you may be able to reduce workload in ways that aren’t immediately obvious as I think I have proven here. Of course there are many variables in play here and your mileage will most definitely vary. I encourage you to download the package and see if you get similar results – let me know in the comments. The package contains all three dataflows plus a fourth dataflow that will create the 2GB raw file for you (you will also need the [AdventureWorksDW2008] sample database from which to source the data); simply disable all dataflows except the one you want to test before executing the package and remember, execute using dtexec, not within BIDS. • Default soundcard per application in Vista?

  I use a USB headset during the day, then at night I use my speakers to watch video. I constantly have to use the windows playback list to change the default soundcard before I run the program I want. I did some google research but it doesn't seem to help much, mostly because of false positives. I tried to use "Sound Card Manager" but it didn't seem to work properly. Has anyone had any sucess dealing with the Vista sound system?

The folders/files have to be natively accessible once the split is done (no compression or physical splitting that would require a later join), and the folder structure should still remain intact as it spaces discs. • Why is the disk making my motherboard beep?

  Whenever I let my PC do heavy disk accesses for a long time, the speaker on the motherboard starts making a continuous chirping sound. Thankfully it doesn't happen often, but it drives me nuts when it does. Anybody know where this sound might be coming from, or have any hints as to how to track it down? Edit: The problem appears to be with the processor, the correlation with disk access was coincidental. Thanks for all the answers.

• Convert file from VOC to MP3

  I would like to convert a sound file (from a digital voice recorder) with the extension .voc to an .mp3 file or some other common sound files. I am on Windows 7 64 bit. I have tried the program voc2wav but it gives me an error message saying that the program isn't 64 bit. The program has to be free and able to run without installing. (The voice recorder did come with a program that I could install, but I would like to avoid that).

  I'm currenty trying to port Ubuntu Touch to the Galaxy s4 International LTE (GI9505/ jfltexx). I've come to the point where I need to create a UCM directory but I don't know where and how I should call it. By "looking at /usr/share/alsa/ucm/apq8064-tabla-snd-card/" is the local Ubuntu PC directory or a directory on the downloaded CM meant?   I'd like to use the chat section in GMail to make phone calls. I've downloaded and installed the Google Talk plugin, and it acts like it knows what it's doing. But when I try to make calls, the internal laptop mic doesn't work at all (i.e., no one on the other end can hear me). In the GMail chat settings, I've tried selecting "Default Device" for the microphone, as well as "Internal Audio Analog Stereo." No matter which setting I try, none seem to work. As I said at the top, this is only a problem in Ubuntu; it works just fine in OSX and Windows (which means that yes, my Google Voice account is properly configured). Here are my tech specs: Ubuntu 10.10 Kernel Linux 2.6.35-24-generic Gnome 2.32.0 Google Chrome 8.0.552.237 Google Talk Plugin (google-talkplugin) 1.8.0.0-1 MacBook (2,1) w/ internal microphone Any help will be greatly appreciated!   Hello, The headphones and microphone on my Ubuntu 10.10 work fine. But when I start an audio conversation using empathy or pidgin, my computer hangs, the microphone doesn't work, and I can't record anything. I have tried sudo alsa force-reload, I have installed pavucontrol, but nothing works. I can't increase the volume of the headphones and master channel using alsamixer though they are unmuted. (Everything works fine in Fedora and Windows XP.) How do I fix this? Thank you.

• Static background noise while using new headset Ubuntu 13.04

  Today I bought a new gaming headset (Gx-Gaming Lychas), and when I tried to record some gameplay-comentary I noticed that there always is a static background noise, I just recorded an example so you
