• apt-get install does not work. Gives the same error every time E: Unable to locate package

  There is an issue, for every package that I try to install. I am using VMWare Player 3.16 & I have installed Ubuntu 12.04. The error is: E:Unable to locate package (PACKAGE NAME) Also, another problem is that there are some configuration errors. So I have to use the CLI rather than the GUI. Now if this is a network error, I'm not sure as to how to open the setting from the command prompt. Even if I get to the GUI, it might not work, as the shortcuts are not available.

  I am trying to connect to a network resource from my 10.04.4 VM (VMware Fusion) but the destination is unreachable by name. What is weird is that the name is visible in DNS: >nslookup my.name Server: 123.45.67.89 Address: 123.45.67.89#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: my.name Address: 10.20.30.40 I can reach it (via ping) by the IP address (10.20.30.40) but not the name and I thought that was weird because the DNS clearly resolves the name. What can I do to enable access to this resource via the name?

  Cracked a Multicasting problem this evening for one of my Canadian Tweeple. They wanted to mulitcast some MSMQ messages to another machine but nothing was arriving in the listening queue. A local queue could be configured to listen to the particular IP address/port in use and messages would arrive, though. Looking at the network traffic, nothing was going onto the wire for the IP address/port pair until they looked at traffic to the VMWare adapter. The machine had a virtual machine to simulate a remote computer and when they changed the setup from NAT to Bridge, multicasting burst into life.

• Cann't find shared folder anymore

  I use VMware Fusion under Mac, and I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 as virtual machine. Under Ubuntu, by "shared folder", I used to manage a common folder with Mac via /mnt/hgfs/myfolder. Under Windows, I have set up so that this folder is also accessible. But today I cann't find myfolder anymore under /mnt/hgfs in Ubuntu, while it is still accessible via Windows (and Mac of cause). I tried to restart the machine, reset the sharing settings, it still does not work. Could anyone help?

• Paraview 3.98.1 takes too long to launch

  I have been used Ubuntu 12.10 with paraview 3.14.1 to run and visualise CFD simulations (OpenFoam and Eilmer3) and the experience has been really good up to date. When I wanted to try Ubuntu 13.01, I realised paraview 3.98.1 was the version to be installed in this distribution when running sudo apt-get install paraview. I noticed it takes way too long to launch, not to mention that paraFoam always produces an error so paraFoam -bulitin has to be used instead. Does anyone know the reason why paraview 3.98.1 takes so long to load?, is it because the new version has more feautures or Ubuntu 13.04 simply can't handle it smoother? My machine is a Thinkpad W530 with 16GB RAM 1600MHz and intel i7-3720QM. I am running Ubuntu under VMware player set-up with 4GB RAM, 2 cores and Automatic vitualization. Thanks.

• Can I virtualize a pre-installed Windows 7?

  I am considering buying a new computer with Windows 7 (64-bit) pre-installed. Would it be possible to install Ubuntu (preferably 64-bit) dual-boot on such a machine, and then, using VirtualBox / VMWare, etc. under Ubuntu, make a virtual machine that "points to" the existing Windows 7 OS (without making a copy of it)? Just to be clear... at the end of this process: I would have a machine that dual-booted both Windows 7 (64-bit) and Ubuntu (64-bit). If I choose to boot Ubuntu, I would then have the possibility of running a visualization of Windows 7 within Ubuntu. There would only be 1 copy of Windows 7 on the hard disk.

• Sound from Ubuntu Server 10.04

  I feel like this should be a no brainer, but I just can't seem to figure it out. I am running Ubuntu Server 10.04 as a virtual machine in VMWare Fusion. I am simply trying to get there to be some sound that comes out of my laptop speakers. I have installed Alsa and MOC (followed these instructions, and it worked fine http://howto.blbosti.com/2010/03/ubuntu-server-install-alsa-sound-and-moc-music-on-console/). Especially using MOC, I can see that the song (an MP3) is playing, but I am not getting any sound out. lspci | grep audio gives me: 02:02.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 02) This doesn't seem like it should be that big of a deal, but I just can't seem to make it work. Any ideas?

  Hello, I made a VBS script that imports users and creates a Contact Objects everything working OK till I found that users does not appear in the GAL (Global Address List) looking around I found that I need to use the attribute (showInAddressBook) I tried to use it but I get some errors (Null ......) but my supplied inputs are not empty and I have a checking function before sending the inputs to showInAddressBook so what should I use in there? I used the users names, but it did not work also the users are externals (just to use them in our GAL) they have different emails than our normal users any idea on what should I use with showInAddressBook ? cheers

• high performance with xen, vmware or virtualbox

  I was wondering which is the best method to go about if I want to play win based games. I do not want to go with the dual boot method as this will cost me time to restart, login and run a os to do my work or pass the time, and some of my apps rely on win and my graphics to run. for example Daz3d, Photoshop, Flash etc. Now I read about HVM(hardware virtual machines) and then I know about the 3D virtualisation of VMware and VirtualBox. How ever the 2 later virtualise the 3D not using the full power of the GPU. So this option wont perform perfect for latest games like D3. I was wondering if anyone have experience in HVM(like xen if i am not mistaken) and tried something similar to access the full power of the GPU and successfully run newer games and other products relying on the GPU? Will be the first time setting up a HVM, no experience in this so don't know what to expect. This will help a lot as I do not want to revert back to win or as mentioned do dual boot.

• How do I work around sudo 'segmentation fault' on basic bash commands?

  I am sure the answers are out there, but alas there are too many answers (here and elsewhere) to other questions stopping me from finding them. I just encountered something substantially similar to what is described at the closed SO question, sudo : “segmentation fault” Ubuntu maverick [closed]. My team is using Ubuntu 11.04 on VMWare Workstation 8.0.4. We are doing development using c++, Xenomai, Qt, and Qt Creator. When we simulate our application on the virtual machine, we currently need to launch Qt Creator with sudo. My colleague mentioned today that he has been having issues where his workstation locks up and he needs to restart and that occasionally he has the issue that all sudo bash commands return "segmentation fault". I just ran our application in simulation mode. I was running Qt Creator under sudo and Qt Creator received the signal abort (if I recall). Afterward, every command executed with sudo from sudo qtcreator to sudo ls resulted in the message Segmentation fault. I clicked on the power widget to see if I could log out, but the system shut down straightaway without prompting. My understanding is that we run sudo because of a permissions issue with Xenomai and the VM as currently configured, but my colleague has a workaround for this. I expect that not running Qt Creator under sudo -- something that has always made me nervous -- will help contain this issue, but I find it troubling that this could happen and manifest as it does. Does anyone know what is happening? Any recommendations on how to work around this issue? This is happening often to I am trying tolobby for VM changes to be able to run the process without sudo.

• What differences should I know? I just upgraded to 13.10 from 10.10 [on hold]

  I ran Ubuntu 10.10 for a long time because I liked the menu style. The change in GUI with the upgrades drove me nuts but I finally gave in and downloaded Saucy Salamander 13.10 x64. It's a fresh install running as a virtual machine guest in VMWare Workstation 9 on a Windows 7 x64 host. Well it looks like all those icons are still there on the side which I would be OK with if there were some way to bring back my menus. I have no organized way of accessing things now, or do I? That is the purpose for this question, maybe there is some functionality I just can't find but is there. Also all my fine tuning was gone. I used to be able to change DPI but that's gone. I went ahead and installed Unity Tweak Tool via sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool but I couldn't find an icon for it after I installed it.. because again no menu. So I did a search for it and found it there. I've changed the font and which side the window buttons appear on which is good enough for now. Anyway... any suggestions you may have for me I'm game. I'm a Windows 7 user primarily but I use Ubuntu every once in a while. I really liked the old style where everything was categorized like for Applications there was Accessories, Games, Graphics, Internet, Office, Sound & Video, Wine.

• Where should CentOS users get /usr/share/virtio-win/drivers for virt-v2v?

  I need to migrate a number of virtual machines from VMware ESX to CentOS 6 KVM hypervisors. Ultimately, I wrote an RPM spec file that solved my problem at https://github.com/fasrc/virtio-win/blob/master/virtio-win.spec but I'm not sure if there's another RPM in base CentOS or EPEL (something standard) I should be using instead. Originally, I was getting this "No root device found in this operating system image" error when attemting to migrate a Window 2008 VM. . . [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm virt-v2v: No root device found in this operating system image. . . . but I solved this with a simply yum install libguestfs-winsupport since the docs say: If you attempt to convert a virtual machine using NTFS without the libguestfs-winsupport package installed, the conversion will fail. Next I got an error about missing drivers for Windows 2008. . . [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm my-vm_my-vm: 100% [====================================]D virt-v2v: Installation failed because the following files referenced in the configuration file are required, but missing: /usr/share/virtio-win/drivers/amd64/Win2008 . . . and I resolved this by grabbing an iso from Fedora at http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/virtio-win/latest/ as recommended by http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/WindowsGuestDrivers/Download_Drivers and building an RPM from it with this spec file: https://github.com/fasrc/virtio-win/blob/master/virtio-win.spec Now, virt-v2v exits without error: [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm my-vm_my-vm: 100% [====================================]D virt-v2v: my-vm configured with virtio drivers. [root@kvm01b ~]# Now, my question is, rather that the virtio-win RPM from the spec file I wrote, is there some other more standard RPM in base CentOS or EPEL that will resolve the error above? • Time Drift on VM servers, need a reliable solution

  We have some windows server 2008 VMware instances on multiple physical servers (hosted) and an application which requires the time to be synced across the server instances. Obviously, VMware has problems with this and we really have never gotten it working any better, we have setup the servers to poll for an NTP update every minute which mitigates the problem (in a fairly crude way). Except that every once in a while, the update will fail (because there's already too much drift) and then windows never does an NTP update afterwards which eventually allows the servers to drift far enough apart that our application breaks, and we notice. We are thinking about changing hosts to Xen servers on approximately the same setup, and I anticipate similar problems. can anyone tell me if Xen has the same time-drift issues VMware does, for guests? can anyone tell me what the best windows server settings are for syncing with an external NTP server to keep things in sync: how frequently do you recommend syncing? (assuming every minute) do you recommend running our own NTP server - even if it has to be on a virtual instance? (assuming not) is there any way to tell windows to sync with the NTP server no matter what the time difference is? any other suggestions for keeping windows servers time in sync? • Rescue system running TFS that BSODs, into vmware esxi

  Hi, After moving to new facilities, one of our old Dell servers running Windows Server 2003 R2 on PowerEdge 2650 HW BSODs with 0x8e. The server runs Team Foundation Server, so we have a few guys dependent on it. No one here knows TFS, so we have no idea how difficult it would be to setup from scratch. We have the MSSQL database(s) backed up, recent and fresh copy. Tried removing/refitting memory modules, but with no success. The system boots into safe mode but hangs occasionally. I booted a linux livecd and did a dd of both c: and d:, so I have all the data in compressed images on a vmware machine. For the guest, I created a 38G (actually it became 40GB) partition to act as C:, and booted a live cd. I then uncompressed the compressed disk image of c: and dd'd it to the new c: using 'gunzip -dc c.img.gz | dd of=/dev/sda1 bs=1M'. The operation ran for about 1000 seconds, and completed successfully. I assumed it would at least try to boot windows (but most likely BSOD due to not having correct drivers), but the Vmware ESXi guest does not seem to recognize it as a bootable disk. We don't have the vmware enterprise license, so the vmware converter cold cloning is not an option. Did I do something wrong in my dd's etc with the ISOs, or why would it not (try to) boot? Am I wasting my time? What other approach is there? Will continue to try to remove services and drivers to make the physical machine at least work reasonably well in safe mode. What do you suggest? 1. Continue to get the dd'd images to the virtual disk and get it to boot. 2. Install a new windows server, get team foundation server and restore from backup. 3. Focus on the old problematic hardware Any help appreciated

• Allocating More Than 4 GB Of Memory

  I am facing an issue with memory allocation. I have: Host OS: Microsoft Windows XP - Professional x64 Edition - Version 2003 - Service Pack 2. Host Physical Memory: 8 GB Guest OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 4 (Nahant Update 5). I am not sure if it is 32 or 64 bits. The lsb_release -a command says that argument LSB Version: core-3.0-ia32, so I guess that would be 32 bits... VMware Player Version: 2.5.2 build-156735 I would like that VMware Player could allocate more that 4 GB, but when I go to the setting, it only lists 4 GB. If I choose the "About" option, it actually says that I have 8 GB installed in the host machine. This VMware image created by someone else and provided to me, apparently done with VMware Workstation 5. Why can't I allocate 8 GB? Where is the problem? In the WMware Player Version, Guest OS or Host OS? How can I solve this? I understand that for this version of player there isn't one version for 32 and another for 64 bits.

• inaccessible_boot_device after p2v Windows 2000 Pro SP4 to Workstation 6.5

  I am using the latest VMware Converter Standalone to p2v a physical Windows 2000 Professional SP4 PC. The PC is a standard Pentium with IDE disk from circa 2001. The disk is 20GB partitioned logically into C: and D. It converts with no errors (I did both disks into one VMDK). When I power on the VM in VMware Workstation 6.5 (or Vmware Player 2.5) it gets to the Win 2000 boot graphic then I get a BSOD with the classic 0x7B Stop error: inaccessible_boot_device. Is there anything I can do to get the vm to boot? I am lost for ideas, normally p2v of a basic IDE pc works flawlessly. I'm willing to put a bounty on this as I am trying to sort this out for a client urgently.

• Why can't I resize some virtual thick disks in VMWhare vSphere Client

  Let me start off by mentioning I am really really new to this whole VMWare ESX/vSphere thing, so apologies if this is a FAQ or asked a million times before using better wording. Also, please correct me if I'm using the wrong terms all over the place. We just got this brand new VMWare EXS server, and we started importing virtual machines from around the office. Some of them were originally based on VMWare, others are converted from MS Virtual Server. One of these machines needs a bigger disk, but in the vSphere Client the disk size spinedit is disabled. Disk type is thick. However, for other machines, with the same disk type, the spinedit is enabled and I can happily resize their disks. So here is the question: why can't I resize this disk in particular? All machines are freshly converted, so I assume there are no snapshots yet, which I read would stop a resize from happening (again, correct me if I'm wrong).
