• Simple interlinear gloss: aligned bilingual paragraph

  An interlinear gloss can be used to layout a translation of a document. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlinear_gloss Usually this is done word-by-word or morpheme-by-morpheme. However, I would like to do this in a different way, translating entire paragraphs at a time. http://www.optimnem.co.uk/learning/spanish/three-little-pigs.php For now I am not interested in taking into account the order of words or phrases that change order between languages. That is, I don't mind if the words in the paragraph are not aligned or if the length of one paragraph is much longer than the other, causing an overhanging line. • How do I test against a large number of regular expressions quickly and know which one matched?

  I'm writing a program in .net where the user may provide a large number of regular expressions. For a given string, I need to figure out which regular expression matches that string (if more than one matches, I just need the first one that matches). However, if there are a large number of regular expressions this operation can take a very long time. I was somewhat hoping there would be something similar to flex for .net that would allow me to specify a large number of regular expressions yet quickly (O(n) according to Wikipedia for n = len(input string)) figure out which regular expression matches. Also, I would prefer not to implement my own regular expression engine :).

• Does TCP actually define 'TCP server' and 'TCP clients'? [closed]

  In the Wikipedia article, TCP communication is explained using the terms 'client' and 'server'. It also uses the word 'peers'. But TCP actually does not define "TCP clients" and "TCP servers" - In the RFC 675 document (SPECIFICATION OF INTERNET TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROGRAM), the word "client" never appears. The RFC explains that TCP is used to connect processes over ports (sockets), and that 'A pair of sockets form a CONNECTION which can be used to carry data in either direction [i.e. full duplex]. Calling the originating party the "client" seems to be common practice. But this client/server communication model is not always applicable to TCP communication. For example take peer-to-peer networks. Calling all processes which open a socket (and wait for incoming connections from peers) "TCP servers", sounds wrong to me. I would not call my uncle's telephone device a "Telephony server" if I dial his phone number and he picks up.

• is it possible to use a python scrapper in a website?

  I want to scrap a website and use that content in a website of my own. I am just wondering if that can be done with python 2.7, and if so how? If not, do I have to use JavaScript to scrap it? And do you have a good place to learn how to do that or good libraries for it. For those of you wondering, the website I am scrapping is legal, and they allow for this to be done. I have searched all over but apparently nobody tries to implement these scrappers that they write. I can write a web scrapper in python just fine. Say my scrapper scraps a name from a wikipedia page (John Doe for example), how can I use that name that I get in my website? Another update, I have found pjsrape and PhantomJS. I have only found one stack overflow post and the github examples with aren't very intuitive. If anybody has any experience or better ways to do it I would very much appreciate it

• Qt/C++ regular expression library with unicode property support

  I'm converting an application from the .Net framework to Qt using C++. The application makes extensive use of regular expression unicode properties, i.e. \p{L}, \p{M}, etc. I've just discovered that the QRegExp class lacks support for this among other things (lookbehinds, etc.) Can anyone recommend a C++ regular expression library that: Supports unicode properties Is unicode-aware in other respects (i.e. \w matches more than ASCII word characters) As a bonus, supports lookbehinds. Please don't point me to the wikipedia article; I don't trust it. That article says that QRegExp supports unicode properties. Unless I'm really doing something wrong, it doesn't. I'm looking for someone actually using unicode properties with a regex library in a project.

  I'm looking for the most official definition of CSCI / Configuration Item - not just what it is but what we have to deliver / can expect when a contract defines subsystems which shall be developed as configuration items. I spend some time with my famous search tool and found a lot of explanations for CSCI (wikipedia, acronym directories, ...) but I haven't found a standard or a pointer to a standard (like ISO-xxx) yet which tells (1) what it is and (2) what has to be done from a QM/CM point of view. I just ask, because a contractors QM representative stated during an acceptance test, that CI only requires to not forget the CI in the configuration plan and to assign a serial number ... I expected to see some SRS, SDD, ICD, SVD, SIP, ... documents and acceptance test documentation for those subsystems...

  While reading Wikipedia's page on decltype, I was curious about the statement, Its [decltype's] primary intended use is in generic programming, where it is often difficult, or even impossible, to name types that depend on template parameters. While I can understand the difficulty part of that statement, what is an example where there is a need to name a type that cannot be named under C++03? EDIT: My point is that since everything in C++ has a declaration of types. Why would there ever be a case where it is impossible to name a type? Furthermore, aren't trait classes designed to yield type informations? Could trait classes be an alternative to decltype?

  I would like to know how a set is implemented in C++. If I were to implement my own set container without using the STL provided container, what would be the best way to go about this task? I understand STL sets are based on the abstract data structure of a binary search tree. So what is the underlying data structure? An array? Also, how does insert() work for a set? How does the set check whether an element already exists in it? I read on wikipedia that another way to implement a set is with a hash table. How would this work?

• Publish/Subscribe paradigm: Why must message classes not know about their subscribers?

  From Wikipedia: "Publish/subscribe (or pub/sub) is a messaging paradigm where senders (publishers) of messages are not programmed to send their messages to specific receivers (subscribers). Rather, published messages are characterized into classes, without knowledge of what (if any) subscribers there may be" I can understand why a sender must not be programmed to send its message to a specific receiver. But why must published messages be classes that do not have knowledge of their subscribers? It would seem that once the messaging system itself is in place, what typically changes as software evolves is the messages sent, the publishers and the receivers. Keeping the messages separate from the subscribers seems to imply that the subscription model might also change. Is this the reason? Also, does this occur in the real world? I realize this may be a basic question, but I'm trying to understand this paradigm and your replies are very much appreciated.

• (Secure) alternative to TLS / SSLv3 ?

  Toying with an idea for a F2F networked application I've just been reading up on secure communication. I quickly settled with the idea of using TLS / SSL as the basis for any communication since it employs Public Key encryption at the protocol level and thus is perfect for my needs. However I was surprised to read (on wikipedia) that the newest version of TLS, SSLv3 uses a mix of MD5 and SHA-1 "because if any vulnerability was found in one of these algorithms the other would prevent it from compromising SSLv3". However, as I take it, lately both have been found flawed ! So my questions are thus: Does this not mean that SSLv3 is basically flawed, or am I not reading close enough ? And if so does a "secure" alternative to SSLv3 exist ?

However, it would be nice to know the actual logic behind it. Anyone care to explain?

• Language D compared to C++?

  Anyone here with experience of the language D? I was just reading through its presentation at http://www.d-programming-language.org/ and at Wikipedia and it seems like a good (better) alternative to C++. With good/better I mean that it seem simpler yet it has all the good stuff within C/C++. But without some of the difficulties that make C++ more difficult to learn and use in a good and efficient way. So anyone with comments/experience with the language D? Performance?

• SSIS code smell – Unused columns in the dataflow

  A code smell is defined on Wikipedia as being a “symptom in the source code of a program that possibly indicates a deeper problem”. It’s a term commonly used by our code-writing brethren to describe sub-optimal code but I think the term can be applied equally well to SSIS packages too as I shall now explain One of my pet hates about SSIS development is packages that throw warnings of the form: The output column "ColumnName" (1358) on output "OLE DB Source Output" (1289) and component "OLE_SRC Name" (1279) is not subsequently used in the Data Flow task. Removing this unused output column can increase Data Flow task performance.  The warning is fairly self-explanatory – any column that appears in the data flow but doesn’t get used will throw this warning when the data flow is executed. Its not the negligible performance degradation that they cause that bothers me though, it’s the clutter that they cause in your log file/table. Take a look at the following screenshot if you don’t believe me: There are 231409 such warnings in the system that I took this screenshot from, that is 231409 log records that should not be there. The most infuriating thing about this warning is that it is so easily avoidable; eliminating such columns is a very quick and easy thing to do in the SSIS Designer. The only problem I see is that the warnings don’t occur until you execute the package – it would be preferable for the designer to have an unobtrusive way of informing you of them as well. Anyway, I digress… I consider such warnings to be a code smell because, to me, they’re symptomatic of a lack of due care and attention; a lack of developer discipline if you will. • Imperative Programming v/s Declarative Programming v/s Functional Programming

  Imperative Programming :: Imperative programming is a programming paradigm that describes computation in terms of statements that change a program state. In much the same way as the imperative mood in natural languages expresses commands to take action, imperative programs define sequences of commands for the computer to perform. The focus is on what steps the computer should take rather than what the computer will do (ex. C, C++, Java). Declarative Programming :: Declarative programming is a programming paradigm that expresses the logic of a computation without describing its control flow. It attempts to minimize or eliminate side effects by describing what the program should accomplish, rather than describing how to go about accomplishing it. The focus is on what the computer should do rather than how it should do it (ex. SQL). A  C# example of declarative v/s. imperative programming is LINQ. With imperative programming, you tell the compiler what you want to happen, step by step. For example, let's start with this collection, and choose the odd numbers: List<int> collection = new List<int> { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 }; With imperative programming, we'd step through this, and decide what we want: List<int> results = new List<int>(); foreach(var num in collection) {     if (num % 2 != 0)           results.Add(num); } Here’s what we are doing: *Create a result collection *Step through each number in the collection *Check the number, if it's odd, add it to the results With declarative programming, on the other hand, we write the code that describes what you want, but not necessarily how to get it var results = collection.Where( num => num % 2 != 0); Here, we're saying "Give us everything where it's odd", not "Step through the collection. Check this item, if it's odd, add it to a result collection." Functional Programming :: Functional programming is a programming paradigm that treats computation as the evaluation of mathematical functions and avoids state and mutable data. It emphasizes the application of functions.Functional programming has its roots in the lambda calculus. It is a subset of declarative languages that has heavy focus on recursion. Functional programming can be a mind-bender, which is one reason why Lisp, Scheme, and Haskell have never really surpassed C, C++, Java and COBOL in commercial popularity. But there are benefits to the functional way. For one, if you can get the logic correct, functional programming requires orders of magnitude less code than imperative programming. That means fewer points of failure, less code to test, and a more productive (and, many would say, happier) programming life. As systems get bigger, this has become more and more important. • Hyperlinked, externalized source code documentation

  Why do we still embed natural language descriptions of source code (i.e., the reason why a line of code was written) within the source code, rather than as a separate document? Given the expansive real-estate afforded to modern development environments (high-resolution monitors, dual-monitors, etc.), an IDE could provide semi-lock-step panels wherein source code is visually separated from -- but intrinsically linked to -- its corresponding comments. For example, developers could write source code comments in a hyper-linked markup language (linking to additional software requirements), which would simultaneously prevent documentation from cluttering the source code. What shortcomings would inhibit such a software development mechanism? A mock-up to help clarify the question: When the cursor is at a particular line in the source code (shown with a blue background, above), the documentation that corresponds to the line at the cursor is highlighted (i.e., distinguished from the other details). As noted in the question, the documentation would stay in lock-step with the source code as the cursor jumps through the source code. A hot-key could switch between "documentation mode" and "development mode". Potential advantages include: More source code and more documentation on the screen(s) at once Ability to edit documentation independently of source code (regardless of language?) Write documentation and source code in parallel without merge conflicts Real-time hyperlinked documentation with superior text formatting Quasi-real-time machine translation into different natural languages Every line of code can be clearly linked to a task, business requirement, etc. Documentation could automatically timestamp when each line of code was written (metrics) Dynamic inclusion of architecture diagrams, images to explain relations, etc. Single-source documentation (e.g., tag code snippets for user manual inclusion). Note: The documentation window can be collapsed Workflow for viewing or comparing source files would not be affected How the implementation happens is a detail; the documentation could be: kept at the end of the source file; split into two files by convention (filename.c, filename.c.doc); or fully database-driven By hyperlinked documentation, I mean linking to external sources (such as StackOverflow or Wikipedia) and internal documents (i.e., a wiki on a subdomain that could cross-reference business requirements documentation) and other source files (similar to JavaDocs). • Learn Cloud Computing – It’s Time

  Last week, I gave an in-house presentation on cloud computing.  I walked through an overview of cloud computing – characteristics (on demand, elastic, fully managed by provider), why are we interested (virtualization, distributed computing, increased access to high-speed internet, weak economy), various types (public, private, virtual private cloud) and services models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.)  Though numerous providers have emerged in the cloud computing space, the presentation focused on Amazon, Google and Microsoft offerings and provided an overview of their platforms, costs, data tier technologies, management and security.  One of the biggest talking points was why developers should consider the cloud as part of their deployment strategy: You only have to pay for what you consume You will be well-positioned for one time event provisioning You will reap the benefits of automated growth and scalable technologies For the record: having deployed dozens of applications on various platforms over the years, pricing tends to be the biggest customer concern.  Yes, scalability is a customer consideration, too, but it comes in distant second.  Boy do I hope you’re still reading… You may be thinking, “Cloud computing is well and good and it sounds catchy, but should I bother?  After all, it’s just another technology bundle which I’m supposed to ramp up on because it’s the latest thing, right?”  Well, my clients used to be 100% reliant upon me to find adequate hosting for them.  Now I find they are often aware of cloud services and some come to me with the “possibility” that deploying to the cloud is the best solution for them.  It’s like the patient who walks into the doctor’s office with their diagnosis and treatment already in mind thanks to the handful of Internet searches they performed earlier that day.  You know what?  The customer may be correct about the cloud.
