  • Writing more efficient xquery code (avoiding redundant iteration)

    Here's a simplified version of a problem I'm working on: I have a bunch of xml data that encodes information about people. Each person is uniquely identified by an 'id' attribute, but they may go by many names. For example, in one document, I might find <person id=1>Paul Mcartney</person> <person id=2>Ringo Starr</person> And in another I might find: <person id=1>Sir Paul McCartney</person> <person id=2>Richard Starkey</person> I want to use xquery to produce a new document that lists every name associated with a given id. i.e.: <person id=1> <name>Paul McCartney</name> <name>Sir Paul McCartney</name> <name>James Paul McCartney</name> </person> <person id=2> ... </person> The way I'm doing this now in xquery is something like this (pseudocode-esque): let $ids := distinct-terms( [all the id attributes on people] ) for $id in $ids return <person id={$id}> { for $unique-name in distinct-values ( for $name in ( [all names] ) where $name/@id=$id return $name ) return <name>{$unique-name}</name> } </person> The problem is that this is really slow. I imagine the bottleneck is the innermost loop, which executes once for every id (of which there are about 1200). I'm dealing with a fair bit of data (300 MB, spread over about 800 xml files), so even a single execution of the query in the inner loop takes about 12 seconds, which means that repeating it 1200 times will take about 4 hours (which might be optimistic - the process has been running for 3 hours so far). Not only is it slow, it's using a whole lot of virtual memory. I'm using Saxon, and I had to set java's maximum heap size to 10 GB (!) to avoid getting out of memory errors, and it's currently using 6 GB of physical memory. So here's how I'd really like to do this (in Pythonic pseudocode): persons = {} for id in ids: person[id] = set() for person in all_the_people_in_my_xml_document: persons[person.id].add(person.name) There, I just did it in linear time, with only one sweep of the xml document. Now, is there some way to do something similar in xquery? Surely if I can imagine it, a reasonable programming language should be able to do it (he said quixotically). The problem, I suppose, is that unlike Python, xquery doesn't (as far as I know) have anything like an associative array. Is there some clever way around this? Failing that, is there something better than xquery that I might use to accomplish my goal? Because really, the computational resources I'm throwing at this relatively simple problem are kind of ridiculous.

In my editor whenever I write an automatic property it's "get" and "set" wraps to a single line whenever I wrote "set" and put semicolon(;). like this: public string MyProperty { get; set; } I want it to be formatted like this public string MyProperty { get; set; } Currently I am manually formatting it to this after writing it. How can I set it as a default format?

  • What objects would get defined in a Bridge scoring app (Javascript)

    I'm writing a Bridge (card game) scoring application as practice in javascript, and am looking for suggestions on how to set up my objects. I'm pretty new to OO in general, and would love a survey of how and why people would structure a program to do this (the "survey" begets the CW mark. Additionally, I'll happily close this if it's out of range of typical SO discussion). The platform is going to be a web-app for webkit on the iPhone, so local storage is an option. My basic structure is like this: var Team = { player1: , player2: , vulnerable: , //this is a flag for whether or //not you've lost a game yet, affects scoring scoreAboveLine: , scoreBelowLine: gamesWon: }; var Game = { init: ,//function to get old scores and teams from DB currentBid: , score: , //function to accept whether bid was made and apply to Teams{} save: //auto-run that is called after each game to commit to DB }; So basically I'll instantiate two teams, and then run loops of game.currentBid() and game.score. Functionally the scoring is working fine, but I'm wondering if this is how someone else would choose to break down the scoring of Bridge, and if there are any oversights I've made with regards to OO-ness and how I've abstracted the game.     I'm wondering if it's possible to find all points by longitude and latitude within X radius of one point? So, if I provide a latitude/longitude of -76.0000, 38.0000, is it possible to simply find all the possible coordinates within (for example) a 10 mile radius of that? I know that there's a way to calculate the distance between two points, which is why I'm not clear as to whether this is possible... Because, it seems like you need to know the center coordinates (-76 and 38 in this case) as well as the coordinates of every other point in order to determine whether it falls within the specified radius... Is that right?

    Some time ago, reading this entry I found a nice image and a pointer to a better book entitled "Thinking Forth". Awesomest would be to have eclipse just do it, but since we're really just recovering from one ex-employee that thought he was too pretty for coding conventions, a less-friendly tool that would do it right just once would suffice.

  • Why can't HTC Droid running OTA 2.1 communicate with RFCOMM?

    Yesterday we received OTA Android 2.1 on my wife's HTC Droid - HOORAY!!! I am finally able to load my carputer app on her phone. Well we loaded it, but it doesn't work. Specifically, it connects but sees no I/O!!! I paired, re-paired, and re-paired again, every time its the same problem: connect() says we connected successfully, but any attempt to send or receive data appears to work but no data ever arrives in the input buffer. The device I'm connecting to uses AT commands. ATI should respond with a device ID. That works fine when I run the app on my Moto Droid, but on the HTC droid, no data is ever present in the inputstream/buffer. Personally, I'm feeling pretty sure it's a bug or limitation in this release for the HTC (because the app works great on my Moto A855 Droid). Can anybody comment on the issue?     I'm using a class that extends BytecodeScanningDetector to check for some problematic fields in a class. After detecting whether the field is problematic, I add it to the bug report like below: Once I run findbugs, it identifies the bug, lists it in the left pane, but does not highlight the corresponding source line.   • How to View Android Native Code Profiling?

    I started my emulator with ./emulator -trace profile -avd emulator_15. I then tracked down the trace files to ~/.android/avd/rodgers_emulator_15.avd/traces/profile, where there are six files: qtrace.bb, qtrace.exc, qtrace.insn, qtrace.method, qtrace.pid, qtrace.static. I can't figure out what to do with these files. I've tried both dmtracedump and traceview on all of the files, but none seem to generate any output I can do anything with. How can I view the proportion of time taken by native method calls on Android?

  • LINQ: Create persistable Associations in Code, Without Foreign Key

    Hello, I know that I can create LINQ Associations without a Foreign Key. The problem is, I've been doing this by adding the [Association] attribute in the DBML file (same as through the designer), which will get erased again after I refresh my database (and reload the entire table structure). I know that there is the MyData.cs file (as part of the DBML) in which I can place my partial extensions etc. to domain objects (to persist even after I refresh the DBML), but I don't know how to create an association there?

I stubbed __builtin__.open to raise IOError when the open is called with said file name But how do I go from 278 to 333. Is this even possible? Additional information: - using coverage.py 3.4 (only listing 3.5, we can't currently upgrade to 3.5)

An assembly will be created on the server and a lot of functions and procedures. It's really easy. Now I want to script the whole deployment process. What is Visual Studio doing when I make a deployment? Can Visual Studio autoscript all the deployment steps for me? Can I save it to a file and execute it manually?
