  • What does the 'X' in .aspx, docx, xlsx, etc... represent?

    It's one of those things you just take for granted until one day someone asks you and you realize you can't answer it. Much like for years I never questioned the use of 1033 directories in Microsoft products for years until one day, someone asked me about it. Around the release of .NET and Office 2007, Microsoft added an x to basically all of their extensions and I frankly took it as representing XML, but that simply doesn't make sense with .aspx. So, I realize this is a very non technical question, but now that the question has been asked of me and my googling hasn't given me an answer, can anyone tell me with authority what the X represents? Is it extended? Xml? Or is there no meaning behind it?

    Maybe I'm an idiot but I don't quite get what goes in the header of my HTML to use XHTML w/ HTML5. Is this still good and we just add the HTML5 tags?: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html dir="ltr" lang="eng" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> Or is it <!DOCTYPE html> or what? Then at A List Apart they say: If you do go with XHTML 5, remember that your server must deliver the documents with a MIME type of application/xhtml+xml or text/xml. Please explain to me as if I was stupid :) what that means in a practical sense? "deliver the documents"? Meaning html? What happens to php? What are the steps required to set up your web server this way?

  • Ruby on Rails - Send JavaScript to view

    Hey, I am creating a website in Ruby on Rails. I have a controller action that renders a view like so: def show time_left = Time.now.to_i - 3.hours.to_i @character = current_user.characters.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| format.html # show.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @character } end end This is fine as it renders the show.html.erb as I like. I would like however to somehow pass time_left to the view as a Javascript variable as this value is use by a countdown JQuery plugin. I could put a javascript block on the page in the HTML and print a instance variable out like so: <script type="javascript"> $('#countdown').countdown('<%= @time_left =>')</script> But I would like to keep all my JS in a external file and off the page could anyone give some advice on how to implement this?     I wanted to enable custom shortcuts in my Firefox extension. The idea is that the user just focuses on a textbox, presses key combination, and it's shown in the textbox and saved to a preference. However, I couldn't get it to work.   • Finding the right version of the right JAR in a maven repository

    I'm converting a build that has 71 .jar files in its global lib/ directory to use Maven. Of course, these have been pulled from the web by lots of developers over the past ten years of this project's history, and weren't always added to VCS with all the necessary version info, etc. Is there an easy, automated way to go from that set of .jar files to the corresponding <dependency/> elements for use in my pom.xml files? I'm hoping for a web page where I can submit the checksum of a jar file and get back an XML snippet. The google hits for 'maven repository search' are basically just finding name-based searches. And http://repo1.maven.org/ has no search whatsoever, as far as I can see. Update: GrepCode looks like it can find projects given an MD5 checksum. But it doesn't provide the particular details (groupId, artifactId) that Maven needs.

    Versions: NetBeans 6.8, Scala Kit 0.16.1 When I compile my project, I get the following output: init: deps-jar: Compiling 2 source files to F:\MyProgramming\NorvigSpellChecker\build\classes compile: Created dir: F:\MyProgramming\NorvigSpellChecker\dist Building jar: F:\MyProgramming\NorvigSpellChecker\dist\NorvigSpellChecker.jar Not copying the libraries. To run this application from the command line without Ant, try: java -jar "F:\MyProgramming\NorvigSpellChecker\dist\NorvigSpellChecker.jar" jar: BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 3 seconds) Of course, the libraries should be copied, so I can't actually run it by using this command line. I don't see any options to copy the library in the project configuration. The plugin uses Ant for building, but I don't have any experience with it; presumably it should be easy enough to tell Ant to copy the libraries. Here is build-impl.xml, what should I do in build.xml?

    I am querying an API using SimpleXML which will occasionally fail for reasons unknown. I would like to have the script retry up to 5 times. How can I do this? I assume it has something to do with wrapping the object in a try/catch, but I'm not very experienced with this -- have tried to read the manual on exception handling but am still at a loss.   • multiple FileSystemWatchers to monitor files on local system?

    We're writing a text editor like tool for our internal accounting package system that has actions that can be done by our own Xml language specs. These macro commands are specified in Xml files and we need the ability to monitor if files openned have bean modified externally. The only problem is that there maybe 20-30 files with different paths openned at any one time. Would it be good to use multiple FileSystemWatchers for this scenario? Or would it be better to monitor the root drive and catch specific events that match an open file in the editor (though lots of events could be raised). Some are local drives (C,D,E) others are their network drives (U,X,G,H). Files are quite chunky too about 300-400Kb.

    Hi, I have build a Java appliction which is using ant.jar (ant 1.8.2) classes for building android application from it's build.xml file with release as target. My Android project has been built by using android create project command, using sdk 2.2. When I run my application for building the Android application I get the following message - build.xml:46: taskdef class com.android.ant.SetupTask cannot be found I have verified the sdk.dir path and the sdk-location path and both are correct.   • having trouble with jpa, looks to be reading from cache when told to ignore

  • Catching an error for a child resource in Ruby on Rails

    What is the best way to add errors to render if a child resource is really what's having issues and not the parent resource? In english what I mean is the following.. imagine the following code: @foo = Foo.new foochild = Foochild.new // break foochild somehow @foo << foochild @foo.save now when I do: format.xml { render :xml => @foo.errors } I don't get anything about how foochild broke, meaning the error message is useless to the user. How does one go about fixing this?

  • Hibernate bug using Oracle?

    Hello, I've got the problem, that I use a property in the persistence.xml which forces Hibernate to look only for tables in the given schema. <property name="hibernate.default_schema" value="FOO"/> Because we are using now 4 different schemas the actual solution is to generate 4 war files with a modified persistence.xml. That not very elegant. Does anybody know, how I can configure the schema with a property or by manipulation the JDBC connection string? I'm using Oracle 10g, 10_2_3 Patch. Thanks a lot.

    Let's say I have an XML file that will look like this: <a> <b d="value1"/> <c d="value2"/> </a> In the XSD file that defines the structure of this XML file I defined the elements by name 'b' and 'c' to be of the same type (and the type requires attribute 'd'). Let's say that I want to make a keyReference of all elements of the type that both 'b' and 'c' are, is there any way in XPath to do this? At the definition of the type of 'a' I would expect something like this: <xs:keyref name="myReferenceName" refer="keyToReferTo"> <xs:selector xpath="[@type='typenameof elements b and c?']"/> <xs:field xpath="@d"/> </xs:keyref> Is something like this possible, or is XPath, even in the XSD, schema-unaware?

  • REST - why we need million urls and different HTTP request?

But I still don't understand why we need to utilize different HTTP requests: DELETE/PUT/POST/GET in order to build nice API Wouldn't it be a lot simpler to pass all information in request parameters and have a SINGLE ENTRY-POINT for your api?: GET www.example.com/api?id=1&method=delete&returnformat=JSON GET www.example.com/api?id=1&method=delete&returnformat=XML or POST www.example.com/api {post data: id=1&method=delete&returnformat=JSON} POST www.example.com/api {post data: id=1&method=delete&returnformat=XML} and then - we can handle all methods and data internally without the need for hundreds of urls... how would you call this type of API - It's not REST apparently, it's not SOAP. then - what is it? UPDATE I'm not proposing any new standards here. I merely asking a question in order to better understand why web services work the way they work.
