• Asp.net hosting equivalent of Dreamhost (pricing, features and support)

  Disclaimer: I have browsed http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/asp.net+hosting and didn’t find anything quite similar in value to Dreamhost. One of the biggest impediments IMHO for developing web applications on asp.net is the cost of deployment. I am not talking about building sites like Stackoverflow.com or plentyoffish.com. This is about sites that are bigger than brochureware and smaller than ones that require dedicated servers. Let me give you an example. xmec.org is an asp.net site I maintain for my college alumni. On an average it’s slated to hit around 1000-1100 views per day. At present it’s hosted on godaddy. The service is so damn pathetic; I am using it only because of the lack of options. The site doesn’t scale (no, it’s not the code) and the web control panels are extremely slow. The money I pay doesn’t justify the service or the performance. Every deployment push is a visit to the infuriating web control panel to set the permissions and the root directories. Had I developed it in python, this would have been deployed on Dreamhost.com with $10/year hosting fees (they have offers running all throughout) 50 GB space 5 MySQL Databases Shell / FTP Users POP / SMTP Access Unlimited Domains hosting Unlimited Sub domains hosting Unlimited Domains Forwarded/Mirrored Custom DNS (These are the only ones I could think of. More at the feature page) With a dream host shell, I even have a svn checked-out version of wordpress for my blog. Now, that’s control! To my question: Is there any asp.net (preferably .net 3.5. Dreamhost keeps on updating versions every fortnight) hosting company providing remotely similar feature-sets and pricing like Dreamhost. My requirements are: Less than $15-25/ year Typical WISP minus PHP .net 3.5 SP1 Full Trust mode(I can live with medium trust, if not for the IL emitting libraries) Isolated Application Pool 5 – 10 MySQL db’s Unlimited domain hosting MsSql 2005 or 2008 FTP support At Least 5 GB space SMTP IIS 7 Log files Accessibility Moderately good control panel Scripting, shell support Nominal bandwidth Another case in point: Recently I’ve been contemplating building a tool-website to find duplicates and weird characters in my Google contacts and fix them. With asp.net, the best part is that I can do this with LINQ to XML in less than 100 lines of code. What’s bad is the hosting part. I don’t think I stand to make any money out of this and therefore can’t afford to host it on GoGrid or DiscountAsp.net. Godaddy is not an option either. If I do this in python, I can push to this my existing $10 Dreamhost account with another domain pointed. No extra cost. Svn exported with scripts (capability) to change the connection string! Looking at the problem holistically, I think I represent a large breed of programmers playing it cheap and experimenting different things on a regular basis, one of which will become the next twitter/digg.

  I'm trying to parse the output from a tool into a data structure but I'm having some difficulty getting things right. The file looks like this: Fruits Apple Auxiliary Core Extras Banana Something Coconut Vegetables Eggplant Rutabaga You can see that top-level items are indented by one space, and items beneath that are indented by two spaces for each level. The items are also in alphabetical order. How do I turn the file into a Python list that's something like ["Fruits", "Fruits/Apple", "Fruits/Banana", ..., "Vegetables", "Vegetables/Eggplant", "Vegetables/Rutabaga"]?

I have to find out lines ( wherever mopre than one lines is coming) and should replace with one line spaces.   Okay here it is : I have built an c# console app that downloads email, save attachments , and stores the subject, from, to, body to a MS SQL Database. I use aspNetPOP3 Component to do this. I have build a front end ASP.NET application to search and view the messages. Works great. Next Steps (this is where I need help ): Now I want my users (of the asp.net app) to reply to this message send the email to the originator, and tread any additional replies back and forth on from that original message(like basecamp). This would allow my end user not to have to log-in to a system, they just continue using email (our users can as well). The question is what should I use to determine if messages are related? Subject line I think is a bad approach. I believe the best method i've seen so far is way basecamp does it, but I'm not sure how that is done, here is a real example of the reply to address from a basecamp email (I've changed the host name): [email protected] Basecamp obviously are prefixing the pre-pending a tracking id to the email address, however , when I try this with my mail service, it's rejected. Is this the best approach, is there a way I can accomplish this, is there a better approach, or even a better email component tool? Thanks, Mike

  I've got a chunk of code where I can pass info into a MySQL command using parameters through an ODBC connection.   Sorry for the length, but a picture is worth 1000 words: In ASP.NET MVC 2, the input form field "name" attribute must contain exactly the syntax below that you would use to reference the object in C# in order to bind it back to the object upon post back. That said, if you have an object like the following where it contains multiple Orders having multiple OrderLines, the names would look and work well like this (case sensitive): This works: Order[0].id Order[0].orderDate Order[0].Customer.name Order[0].Customer.Address Order[0].OrderLine[0].itemID // first order line Order[0].OrderLine[0].description Order[0].OrderLine[0].qty Order[0].OrderLine[0].price Order[0].OrderLine[1].itemID // second order line, same names Order[0].OrderLine[1].description Order[0].OrderLine[1].qty Order[0].OrderLine[1].price However we want to add order lines and remove order lines at the client browser. I am having a little bit of trouble with the algorithm and was hoping someone could help spot my errors. • Problem with stack based implementation of function 0x42 of int 0x13

  I'm trying a new approach to int 0x13 (just to learn more about the way the system works): using stack to create a DAP.. Assuming that DL contains the disk number, AX contains the address of the bootable entry in PT, DS is updated to the right segment and the stack is correctly set, this is the code: push DWORD 0x00000000 add ax, 0x0008 mov si, ax push DWORD [ds:(si)] push DWORD 0x00007c00 push WORD 0x0001 push WORD 0x0010 push ss pop ds mov si, sp mov sp, bp mov ah, 0x42 int 0x13 As you can see: I push the dap structure onto the stack, update DS:SI in order to point to it, DL is already set, then set AX to 0x42 and call int 0x13 the result is error 0x01 in AH and obviously CF set. No sectors are transferred. I checked the stack trace endlessly and it is ok, the partition table is ok too.. I cannot figure out what I'm missing...   I've come across an issue where a web application has managed to create a cookie on the client, which, when submitted by the client to Apache, causes Apache to return the following: HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request Date: Mon, 08 Mar 2010 21:21:21 GMT Server: Apache/2.2.3 (Red Hat) Content-Length: 7274 Connection: close Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN"> <html><head> <title>400 Bad Request</title> </head><body> <h1>Bad Request</h1> <p>Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.<br /> Size of a request header field exceeds server limit.<br /> <pre> Cookie: ::: A REALLY LONG COOKIE ::: </pre> </p> <hr> <address>Apache/2.2.3 (Red Hat) Server at www.foobar.com Port 80</address> </body></html> After looking into the issue, it would appear that the web application has managed to create a really long cookie, over 7000 characters. Now, don't ask me how the web application was able to do this, I was under the impression browsers were supposed to prevent this from happening. I've managed to come up with a solution to prevent the cookies from growing out of control again. The issue I'm trying to tackle is how do I reset the large cookie on the client if every time the client tries to submit a request to Apache, Apache returns a 400 client error? I've tried using the ErrorDocument directive, but it appears that Apache bails on the request before reaching any custom error handling.

  I'm trying to run jstack command on my java application. Application is rather big, running inside jboss AS occupying about 4gb of memory. OS is Windows Server 2003 Standard edition. Every time i get an error "Not enough storage is available to process this command". There is enough ram, 16gb, and disk space. So, any ideas?

• Amazon S3 and swfaddress

  I recently migrated a large AS3 site (lots of swfs, lots of flvs) to Amazon S3. Pretty much everything but HTML and JS files is being stored/served from Amazon, and it's working well. The only problem I'm having is that I built the site using SWFaddress (actually, via the Gaia framework which uses SWFaddress), and for some reason, SWFaddress is no longer updating the address bar correctly as users navigate from page to page. In other words, the URL persistently remains http://www.mysite.com, not http://www.mysite.com/#/section as would be the case were SWFaddress functioning correctly (and as it was functioning prior to the migration). Stranger yet, if I go to (e.g.) http://www.mysite.com/#/section directly, the deeplinking functions as you'd expect--I arrive directly at the correct section. However, navigating away from that section doesn't have any effect on the address bar, despite the fact that it should be dynamically updated. I've got a crossdomain.xml file set up on the site that allows access from all domains, so that's not the issue, and I don't know what else might be. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! P.S. I integrated S3 by putting pretty much the entire site in an S3 bucket and then just changing the initial swfobject embed to point to the S3 instance of main.swf, passing in the S3 path as the "base" param to the embedded swf so that all dynamically loaded assets and swfs would also be sourced from s3. Dunno if that's related to the troubles I'm having.

  After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow). SFC showed the ff. message after I ran it: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log." • SQL database problems with addressbook table design

  Hello! I am writing a addressbook module for my software right now. I have the database set up so far that it supports a very flexible address-book configuration. I can create n-entries for every type I want. Type means here data like 'email', 'address', 'telephone' etc. I have a table named 'contact_profiles'. This only has two columns: id Primary key date_created DATETIME And then there is a table called contact_attributes. This one is a little more complex: id PK #profile (Foreign key to contact_profiles.id) type VARCHAR describing the type of the entry (name, email, phone, fax, website, ...) I should probably change this to a SET later. value Text (containing the value for the attribute). I can now link to these profiles, for example from my user's table. But from here I run into problems. At the moment I would have to create a JOIN for each value that I want to retrieve. Is there a possibility to somehow create a View, that gives me a result with the type's as columns? So right now I would get something like #profile type value 1 email [email protected] 1 name Sebastian Hoitz 1 website domain.tld But it would be nice to get a result like this: #profile email name website 1 [email protected] Sebastian Hoitz domain.tld The reason I do not want to create the table layout like this initially is, that there might always be things to add and I want to be able to have multiple attributes of the same type. So do you know if there is any possibility to convert this dynamically? If you need a better description please let me know. Thank you!

• minimal rsync installation on windows xp?

  Hi I want to install rsync on windows xp. I have searched the web, but most of the solutions suggest using cygwin, but is there any other way to do this? I don't want to install cygwin because it takes lot of space. Moreover, I need to make it communicate with a rsync daemon on Linux, therefore alternatives to rsync on windows won't help. Thanks
