• How to set PcManFm as the default file manager?

  I think Nautilus is so slow, and I'd like to move to PCmanFM, but didn't find any good tips how to do this in Ubuntu 12.10. • Lost desktop settings in KDE

  After next unsuccessful attempt to install ATI fglrx drivers, when I also changed GRUB config a bit (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="radeon.modeset=0 and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"). When I restored everything to default (uninstalled fglrx, restored default values in GRUB config and xorg.conf) KDE logged me into completely new desktop, with (I suppose) default configuration. Is there a way to restore my previous desktop settings? What could be the cause? SOLVED: Something was messed out with display settings. Search for 'Display Configuration' and there deselect one display. Or is there a better option?

• Do wordpress websites get indexed quicker by SE than a regular website?

  I registered a couple of domains with the names of categories of products we sell. I then installed wordpress in one of those domains and played around with it for a bit, and left it alone for about a month. There was a link on my regular website to that secondary website and that website was also registered in google's webmaster tools, but that's that. I then searched on google last week for that product category, and to my surprise, that secondary website showed up in the 2nd or 3rd page on google. Now my question is: Do search engines index wordpress websites quicker? I had given up on using wordpress for that website, since it's so simple, but should i use it, would it give me better results?   Authentication is such a general problem, which most websites have to implement. There are a few commercial solutions, but all lack sufficient functionality to customize the registration process. Therefore, I am looking for an open-source alternative. I am using PHP and with PostgreSQL as database, but as far as I understand one could utilize authentication solutions using other technologies and integrate them into our site in various ways. Therefore, I am looking for such solutions in any technology apart from those requiring Microsoft infrastructure... I would prefer Open Source solution, which have already implemented the following features: Has password recovery procedure Username is the email address of the user Has "Remember me" functionailty (meaning that the user is logged in automatically without seeing the login page) email address verification Google has gotten me nowhere on this and neither a search on this site...

• Adding a list of "recent articles" affects SEO

  We have a site which has a sidebar with sections (or "widgets" if you like) showing stuff like "Recent Articles", "Other Articles by this User", "Similar Articles" etc. The issue is, Google seems to take these links very seriously. In fact, if I have only a single article which is closely related to a certain phrase (and several other pages link to it in their sidebars), when I do a Google search, it lists all those other pages highlighting that one link to the page that should actually be the most relevant one. And these pages don't even mention the phrase anywhere else. It there a common approach with adding these sidebar links? For example, I might add them through ajax after the page is loaded, but then crawlers will have harder time finding them?

• Depth is disabled - How to turn on?

  In XNA 3.1 is there any other way to disable depth in 3D Worlds using DirectX models other than GraphicsDevice.RenderState.DepthBufferEnable = false; ? The reason for my question is I have quite a huge program which offers a 3D World with a couple of 3D DirectX models inside. Depth was never an issue since it ever worked fine but since a few days after doing some modifications my models are all depth-translucent i.e. depth-buffering and/or culling seems to be disabled. But in my whole source code I never touch any of the options related to Depth or Culling which means I never turn these settings on explicitly nor turn it off somewhere. So I am searching for some other statement maybe related to the GraphicsDevice that implicitly turns depth off - but I can't find it. (Sorry that I don't post any source code but I have too much source code and I simply don't know where to search) UPDATE: These are a couple of simple objects seen with correct depth. These are the same objects in their current state.

I add a Google Alerts for the keyword, but I do not get any alert for the word from The Site. Furthermore, searching the keyword in the news section don't getting any results from The Site. The Site has a sitemap, that indexed by Google every x minutes. And in the main search, searching for a news title bring the item on the top. What are the best ways to get included in Google Alerts mails?

  I want to open the Application lens in the Unity Dash as the default lens, since I much more open a programm then searching for a wikipedia article, the weather or anything else the home lens offers. Here How do I show the Applications Lens By Default? and here What are Unity's keyboard and mouse shortcuts? are the same questions, but the suggested answers don't work anymore on Trusty. I know that I can open the application lens with Super + A but I just would like to press Super to open it. An alternative would be to only get online suggestions whe partikular asked for them, but even though I just select the application scope in the filter section I get some useles online results. Btw. I don't want to open the online search results in generall, since I just reactivated them to try it out.

  For years, I’ve been using the “Remote Desktops” mmc plugin to manage servers in our infrastructure.  I’ve upgraded to Windows 8 and Remote Desktops is nowhere to be found!  I search and searched and came across a forum listing saying “Why don’t you just use Remove Desktop Connection Manager?” I downloaded it and started using it and its WAY better than Remote Desktops!  I’m glad they took it out and I discovered this tool.  I wish I had discovered this two years ago!   How does one fix (or report an error) on an 'immutable' help.ubuntu.community wiki page? I am a registered member of the wiki. On http://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeNX under the section: Installing the FreeNX server on Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) and higher, step #2, bjorn-nostvold erroneously changed on 2013-01-24 "add-apt-repository" to "apt-add-repository". The original "add-apt-repository" is correct - at least on my Karmic (9.10) version of Ubuntu. By the number of confused people I've found via google search, this seems to be throwing off a lot of people, myself included.

• is it ok to have 2 sitemaps on 1 website?

  Do I have to have a sitemap page on my index page for bots to read it or can I just have it anywhere on my server? I have a phpbb/wordpress integration and I need 2 sitemaps mods for each one (or I need to have them somehow integrated together into one xml sitemap). Is this possible? Whats my best option? I would have the phpbb one something like this: http://www.example.com/phpbb/sitemap.html and the wordpress one something like this: http://www.example.com/wordpress/sitemap.html and then I would submit both off..but not have the links on my footer to confuse anyone.., the sitemaps would strictly be for search engines. Is this a good idea? what are you thoughts?

• rel="Canonical": Ranking Benefits ? & specifying for PDF?

  I think I understand the basic case for using rel="canonical": to tell google which is the preferred URI when the same page/content may be accessed via more than one URI. This helps you avoid duplicate content penalties. But what else does it do? Does it also affect search ranking? i.e. will the page I specify in the canonical be ranked higher than the others? (if all else equal). And in the case of PDF documents, I understand that you can now specify rel="canonical" for them too, using HTTP headers (i.e. in htaccess). Again, this would obviously help avoid dupilcate content penalties if the PDF content is the same as the HTML page or if it can be accessed in more than one place. But does it affect ranking? or are there any other benefits to doing this.

  The idea is to take old games without modifying them, but have the graphics card apply a series of filters to their output before sending them to the monitor. A very crude example would be to take a game that has a resolution of 640x480 and do: Increase the resolution to 1280x960 Apply a blur (low pass filter) Apply a sharpen (1 + high pass filter) These steps may not necessarily be the best to improve the visuals of an old game, but there are a lot of techniques that are well-known in image processing for this purpose. The question is, do the (NVidia) graphics cards give the ability to load a program that modifies the screen before sending it to the monitor? If so, how are they called and what terminology should I use to search? I would be comfortable with doing the programming myself if this ability is part of a library. Also, would the solution be different between Windows and Linux? If so, either is fine, since most of the games are probably runnable by wine.

• On-line Based Conferencing For Admin Panel

  Working on my admin panels work station section which will allow the admin to use simple office tools such as word editors, calculators and whatnot. Under this section of the admin panel, I would like to add a conferencing feature which will allow any administrator to connect with another administrator 1-2-1 under the 1-2-1 Conferencing section, or to join a meeting under 'live meeting' section. Upon my search for on-line based, I found there are all these, what seem to be great applications out there, however not all of them are on-line based, and come with a price! I would like to a purely on-line based conferencing/meeting/1-2-1 feature which will allow administrators to communicate via text or sound, stream their video, share their screen and sending of files. I know this sounds like a big feature, and I am not asking for someone to answer by programming one for my website!   I hope this isn't too subjective, but it is programming related and Im curious. Alot of times I feel.......dumb for lack of a better word when I have to look something up. Alot of times I forget all the specificity of a language and have to look up something like "Doing XXX in C++" for instance, or something along the lines of that. How often do you guys as Programmers both Professionally and On your own have to use google to look up something. Or do most people just kind of remember these things. I guess what Im really asking is, do you often have to use google or other web-search sites to remember how to do what is seemingly "simple" things with languages but you've just forgotten? Please tell me im not the ONLY one.

After having installed it using alt+f2 and having used gksudo nautilus I have installed MATLAB in the correct folder which is: /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a Then I inserted the license and the window told "activation complete" or something like that. This made me happy, but only for a while because as soon as I try to search for Matlab within the applications I cannot find it and neither if I try to run matlab into terminal it says: command not found Can someone help me!? • How to grub-install ignore specific drive/partition

  Is it possible to use grub-install or update-grub to just search on specific disk/partition? (or ignore specific)? I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my hard drive, but i wished to do some testing on it without harming current installation, so I "rsynced" root partition (the only) to the USB partition (ext4). I did fix /etc/fstab on USB partition. The problem is that when I do grub-install /dev/sdb (usb) GRUB seems to confuse when UUIDs. Whatever I chose in GRUB it always boot from disk. In grub in edit mode I see that in two "UUID" lines are not the same. If I retype UUID from "first" to second "line" it boots from USB (as I wish). Is there any other way than fixing /boot/grub/grub.cfg each time? EDIT: the GRUB generated good when I booted from USB and grub-install from there, but question is still if it's possible ignore drives

• Newbie needs to learn basic file management

  I have been using Ubuntu for abut 2 weeks and and still frustrated by simple file operations. I want to find a file called 9.jpg. Every internal command 3-rd party program I have tried also gives me 99.jpg, 999.jpg, lovepotion number9.jpg and a zillion other similar ones. How do you search for an EXACT file name WITHOUT wildcards? This is only my most recent frustration. I'm obviously missing something basic. good tutorial anywhere?
