• Using Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center to Update Solaris via Live Upgrade

  Introduction: This Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center blog entry provides tips for using Ops Center to update Solaris using Live Upgrade on Solaris 10 and Boot Environments on Solaris 11. Why use Live Upgrade? Live Upgrade (LU) can significantly reduce downtime associated with patching Live Upgrade avoids dropping to single-user mode for long periods of time during patching Live Upgrade relies on an Alternate Boot Environment (ABE)/(BE), which is patched while in multi-user mode; thereby allowing normal system operations to continue with the active BE, while the alternate BE is being patched Activating an newly patched (A)BE is essentially a reboot; therefore the downtime is ~= reboot Admins can easily revert to the prior Boot Environment (BE) as a safeguard / fallback. Why use Ops Center to patch via Live Upgrade, Alternate Boot Environments, and Solaris 11 equivalents? All the benefits of Ops Center's extensive patch and package knowledge base can be leveraged on top of Live Upgrade Ops Center can orchestrate patching based on Live Upgrade and Solaris 11 features, which all works together to minimize downtime Ops Centers advanced inventory and reporting features assurance that each OS is updated to a verifiable, consistent standard, rather than relying on ad-hoc (error prone) procedures and scripts Ops Center gives admins control over the boot environment specifications or they can let Ops Center decide when a BE is necessary, thereby reducing complexity and lowering the opportunity for user error Preparing to use Live Upgrade-like features in Solaris 11 Requirements and information you should know: Global Zone Root file-systems must be separate from Solaris Container / Zone filesystems Solaris 11 has features which are similar in concept to Live Upgrade on Solaris 10, but differ greatly in implementationImportant distinctions: Solaris 11 assumes ZFS root Solaris 11 adds Boot Environments (BE's) as an integrated feature (see beadm) Solaris 11 BE's avoid single-user patching (vs. Solaris 10 w/ ZFS snapshot=ABE). Solaris 11 Image Packaging System (IPS) has hooks for BE creation, as needed Solaris 11 allows pkgs to be installed + upgraded in alternate BE (e.g. instead of the live system) but it is controlled on a per-pkg basis Boot Environments are activated across a reboot; instead of spending long periods installing + upgrading packages in single user mode. Fallback to a prior BE is a function of the BE infrastructure (a la beadm). (Generally) Reboot + BE activation can be much much faster on Solaris 11 Preparing to use Live Upgrade on Solaris 10 Requirements and information you should know: Global Zone Root file-systems must be separate from Solaris Container / Zone filesystems Live Upgrade Pre-requisite patches must be applied before the first Live Upgrade Alternate Boot Environments are created (see "Pre-requisite Patches" section, below...) Solaris 10 Update 6 or newer on ZFS root is the practical starting point for Live Upgrade Live Upgrade with ZFS root is far more straight-forward than any scheme based on Alternative Boot Environments in slices or temporarily breaking mirrors Use Solaris best practices to upgrade the OS to at least Solaris 10 Update 4 (outside of Ops Center) UFS root can (technically) be used, but it is significantly more involved (e.g. discouraged) -- there are many reasons to move to ZFS while going through the process to update to Solaris 10 Update 6 or newer (out side of Ops Center) Recommendation: Start with Solaris 10 Update 6 or newer on ZFS root Recommendation: Start with Ops Center 12c or newer Ops Center 12c can automatically create your ABE's for you, without the need for custom scripts Ops Center 12c Update 2 avoids kernel panic on unpatched Solaris 10 update 9 (and older) -- unrelated to Live Upgrade, but more on the issue, below. NOTE: There is no magic!  If you have systems running Solaris 10 Update 5 or older on UFS root, and you don't know how to get them updated to Solaris 10 on ZFS root, then there are services available from Oracle Advanced Customer Support (ACS), which specialize in this area. Live Upgrade Pre-requisite Patches (Solaris 10) Certain Live Upgrade related patches must be present before the first Live Upgrade ABE's are created on Solaris 10.Use the following MOS Search String to find the “living document” that outlines the required patch minimums, which are necessary before using any Live Upgrade features: Solaris Live Upgrade Software Patch Requirements(Click above – the link is valid as of this writing, but search in MOS for the same "Solaris Live Upgrade Software Patch Requirements" string if necessary) It is a very good idea to check the document periodically and adapt to its contents, accordingly.IMPORTANT:  In case it wasn't clear in the above document, some direct patching of the active OS, including a reboot, may be required before Live Upgrade can be successfully used the first time.HINT: You can use Ops Center to determine what to expect for a given system, and to schedule the “pre-patching” during a maintenance window if necessary. Preparing to use Ops Center Discover + Manage (Install + Configure the Ops Center agent in) each Global Zone Recommendation:  Begin by using OCDoctor --agent-prereq to determine whether OS meets OC prerequisites (resolve any issues) See prior requirements and recommendations w.r.t. starting with Solaris 10 Update 6 or newer on ZFS (or at least Solaris 10 Update 4 on UFS, with caveats) WARNING: Systems running unpatched Solaris 10 update 9 (or older) should run the Ops Center 12c Update 2 agent to avoid a potential kernel panic The 12c Update 2 agent will check patch minimums and disable certain process accounting features if the kernel is not sufficiently patched to avoid the panic SPARC: 142900-05 Obsoleted by: 142900-06 SunOS 5.10: kernel patch 10 Oracle Solaris on SPARC (32-bit) X64: 142901-05 Obsoleted by: 142901-06 SunOS 5.10_x86: kernel patch 10 Oracle Solaris on x86 (32-bit) OR SPARC: 142909-17 SunOS 5.10: kernel patch 10 Oracle Solaris on SPARC (32-bit) X64: 142910-17 SunOS 5.10_x86: kernel patch 10 Oracle Solaris on x86 (32-bit) Ops Center 12c (initial release) and 12c Update 1 agent can also be safely used with a workaround (to be performed BEFORE installing the agent): # mkdir -p /etc/opt/sun/oc # echo "zstat_exacct_allowed=false" > /etc/opt/sun/oc/zstat.conf # chmod 755 /etc/opt/sun /etc/opt/sun/oc # chmod 644 /etc/opt/sun/oc/zstat.conf # chown -Rh root:sys /etc/opt/sun/oc NOTE: Remove the above after patching the OS sufficiently, or after upgrading to the 12c Update 2 agent Using Ops Center to apply Live Upgrade-related Pre-Patches (Solaris 10)Overview: Create an OS Update Profile containing the minimum LU-related pre-patches, based on the Solaris Live Upgrade Software Patch Requirements, previously mentioned. SIMULATE the deployment of the LU-related pre-patches Observe whether any of the LU-related pre-patches will require a reboot The job details for each Global Zone will advise whether a reboot step will be required ACTUALLY deploy the LU-related pre-patches, according to your change control process (e.g. if no reboot, maybe okay to do now; vs. must do later because of the reboot). You can schedule the job to occur later, during a maintenance window Check the job status for each node, resolving any issues found Once the LU-related pre-patches are applied, you can Ops Center to patch using Live Upgrade on Solaris 10 Using Ops Center to patch Solaris 10 with LU/ABE's -- the GOODS!(this is the heart of the tip): Create an OS Update Profile containing the patches that make up your standard build Use Solaris Baselines when possible Add other individual patches as needed ACTUALLY deploy the OS Update Profile Specify the appropriate Live Upgrade options, e.g. Synchronize the active BE to the alternate BE before patching Do not activate the BE after patching Check the job status for each node, resolving any issues found Activate the newly patched BE according to your change control process Activate = Reboot to the ABE, making the ABE the new active BE Ops Center does not separate LU activate from reboot, so expect a reboot! Check the job status for each node, resolving any issues found Examples (w/Screenshots) Solaris 10 and Live Upgrade: Auto-Create the Alternate Boot Environment (ZFS root only) ABE to be created on ZFS with name S10_12_07REC (Example) Uses built in feature to call “lucreate -n S10_12_07REC” behind scenes if not already present NOTE: Leave “lucreate” params blank (if you do specify options, the will be appended after -n $ABEName) Solaris 10 and Live Upgrade: Alternate Boot Environment Creation via Operational Profile (script) The Alternate Boot Environment is to be created via custom, user-supplied script, which does whatever is needed for the system where Live Upgrade will be used. Operational Profile, which provides the script to create an ABE: Very similar to the automatic case, but with a Script (Operational Profile), which is used to create the ABE Relies on user-supplied script in the form of an Operational Profile Could be used to prepare an ABE based on a UFS root in a slice, or on a separate device (e.g. by breaking a mirror first) – it is up to the script author to do the right thing! EXAMPLE: Same result as the ZFS case, but illustrating the Operational Profile (e.g. script) approach to call: # lucreate -n S10_1207REC NOTE: OC special variable is $ABEName Boot Environment Profile, which references the Operational Profile Script = Operational Profile on this screen Refers to Operational Profile shown in the previous section The user-supplied S10_Create_BE Operational Profile will be run The Operational Profile must send a non-zero exit code if there is a problem (so that the OS Update job will not proceed) Solaris 10 OS Update Profile (to provide the actual patch specifications) Solaris 10 Baseline “Recommended” chosen for “Install” Solaris 10 OS Update Plan (two-steps in this case) “Create a Boot Environment” + “Update OS” are chosen. Using Ops Center to patch Solaris 11 with Boot Environments (as needed) Create a Solaris 11 OS Update Profile containing the packages that make up your standard build ACTUALLY deploy the Solaris 11 OS Update Profile BE will be created if needed (or you can stipulate no BE) BE name will be auto-generated (if needed), or you may specify a BE name Check the job status for each node, resolving any issues found Check if a BE was created; if so, activate the new BE Activate = Reboot to the BE, making the new BE the active BE Ops Center does not separate BE activate from reboot NOTE: Not every Solaris 11 OS Update will require a new BE, so a reboot may not be necessary. Solaris 11: Auto BE Create (as Needed -- let Ops Center decide) BE to be created as needed BE to be named automatically Reboot (if necessary) deferred to separate step Solaris 11: OS Profile Solaris 11 “entire” chosen for a particular SRU Solaris 11: OS Update Plan (w/BE)  “Create a Boot Environment” + “Update OS” are chosen. Summary: Solaris 10 Live Upgrade, Alternate Boot Environments, and their equivalents on Solaris 11 can be very powerful tools to help minimize the downtime associated with updating your servers.  For very old Solaris, there are some important prerequisites to adhere to, but once the initial preparation is complete, Live Upgrade can be used going forward.  For Solaris 11, the built-in Boot Environment handling is leveraged directly by the Image Packaging System, and the result is a much more straight forward way to patch, and far fewer prerequisites to satisfy in getting there.  Ops Center simplifies using either approach, and helps you improve consistency from system to system, which ultimately helps you improve the overall up-time across all the Solaris systems in your environment. • Using a "white list" for extracting terms for Text Mining, Part 2

  In my last post, we set the groundwork for extracting specific tokens from a white list using a CTXRULE index. In this post, we will populate a table with the extracted tokens and produce a case table suitable for clustering with Oracle Data Mining. Our corpus of documents will be stored in a database table that is defined as create table documents(id NUMBER, text VARCHAR2(4000)); However, any suitable Oracle Text-accepted data type can be used for the text. We then create a table to contain the extracted tokens. The id column contains the unique identifier (or case id) of the document. The token column contains the extracted token. Note that a given document many have many tokens, so there will be one row per token for a given document. create table extracted_tokens (id NUMBER, token VARCHAR2(4000)); The next step is to iterate over the documents and extract the matching tokens using the index and insert them into our token table. We use the MATCHES function for matching the query_string from my_thesaurus_rules with the text. The tf query computes the term (token) frequency by computing the number of times each token appears in a document and divides that by the number of tokens found in the document. The doc_req query counts the number of times the token appears overall in the corpus. In the SELECT clause, we compute the tf_idf. Next, we create the nested table required to produce one record per case, where a case corresponds to an individual document. Here, we COLLECT all the tokens for a given document into the nested column extracted_tokens_tfidf_1. Most notable are the number of clusters (20), using cosine distance which is better for text, turning off auto data preparation since the values are ready for mining, the number of iterations (20) to get a better model, and the split criterion of size for clusters that are roughly balanced in number of cases assigned. • Oracle's Primavera P6 Analytics Now Available!

  Oracle's Primavera product team has announced this week that general availability of our first Oracle BI (OBI) based analytical product with pre-built business intelligence dashboards, reports and KPIs built in. P6 Analytics uses OBI's drill-down capabilities, summarizations, hierarchies and other BI features to provide knowledge to your business users to make the best decisions on portfolios, projects, schedules & resources with deep insights. Without needing to launch into the P6 tool, your executives, PMO, project sponsors, etc. can view up to date project performance information as well as historic trends of project performance. Using web-based portal technology, P6 Analytics makes it easy to manage by exception and then drill down to quickly identify root cause analysis of problem projects. At the same time, a brand new version of the P6 Reporting Database R2 was just announded and is also now available. This updated reporting database provides you with 4 star schemas with spread data and includes P6 activity, project and resource codes. You can use the data warehouse and ETL functions of the P6 Reporting Database R2 with your own reporting tools or build dashboards that utilize the hierarchies & drill down to the day-level on scheduled activities using Busines Objects, Cognos, Microsoft, etc. Both of these products can be downloaded from E-Delivery under the Primavera applications section in the P6 EPPM v7.0 media pack. • Correct configuration of a reverse Proxy with IIS 6.0 and IIRF for Hudson

  I have an Hudson build working on IIS 6.0 with reverse proxy (IIRF). In general it works but 2 errors are displayed in Hudson in the main configuration page called "Manage Hudson" (only if I connect through the reverse proxy): Your container doesn't use UTF-8 to decode URLs. If you use non-ASCII characters as a job name etc, this will cause problems. See Containers and Tomcat i18n for more details. • Tween Animation Cannot Start

  Do you have any reasons why my tween code didn't run or work? I already add the tween engine onto the library folder under LibGDX project folder and "Order and Export" it under Java Build Path at the Properties menu. My first two classes ran correctly and workly but my third class didn't work. Here's the sequence: First class is the first screen. Fade animation works on the company's logo. Second class is the second screen. Fade animation for the loading screen works. Third class is the third screen. After the second screen, now calls for the third screen. Animation stopped or won't run since I want the black screen to fade out at the start when the menu is here. Can you check if I did right? Meet the Author:  Dan Wahlin on HTML5 Canvas Fundamentals   Transcript [Fritz] Hi. This is Fritz Onion. I’m here today with Dan Wahlin to talk about his new course HTML5 Canvas Fundamentals. Dan founded the Wahlin Group, which you can find at thewahlingroup.com, which specializes in ASP.NET, jQuery, Silverlight, and SharePoint consulting. He’s a Microsoft Regional Director and has been awarded Microsoft’s MVP for ASP.NET, Connected Systems, and Silverlight. Dan is on the INETA Bureau’s — Speaker’s Bureau, speaks at conferences and user groups around the world, and has written several books on .NET. Thanks for talking to me today, Dan. [Dan] Always good to talk with you, Fritz. [Fritz] So this new course of yours, HTML5 Canvas Fundamentals, I have to say that most of the really snazzy demos I’ve seen with HTML5 have involved Canvas, so I thought it would be a good starting point to chat with you about why we decided to create a course dedicated just to Canvas. If you want to kind of give us that perspective. [Dan] Sure. So, you know, there’s quite a bit of material out there on HTML5 in general, and as people that have done a lot with HTML5 are probably aware, a lot of HTML5 is actually JavaScript centric. You know, a lot of people when they first learn it, think it’s tags, but most of it’s actually JavaScript, and it just so happens that the HTML5 Canvas is one of those things. And so it’s not just, you know, a tag you add and it just magically draws all these things. You mentioned there’s a lot of cool things you can do from games to there’s some really cool multimedia applications out there where they integrate video and audio and all kinds of things into the Canvas, to more business scenarios such as charting and things along those lines. So the reason we made a course specifically on it is, a lot of the material out there touches on it but the Canvas is actually a pretty deep topic. You can do some pretty advanced stuff or easy stuff depending on what your application requirements are, and the API itself, you know, there’s over 30 functions just in the Canvas API and then a whole set of properties that actually go with that as well. So it’s a pretty big topic, and that’s why we created a course specifically tailored towards just the Canvas. [Fritz] Right. And let’s — let me just review the outline briefly here for everyone. So you start off with an introduction to getting started with Canvas, drawing with the HTML5 Canvas, then you talk about manipulating pixels, and you finish up with building a custom data chart. So I really like your example flow here. I think it will appeal to even business developers, right. Even if you’re not into HTML5 for the games or the media capabilities, there’s still something here for everyone I think working with the Canvas. Which leads me to another question, which is, where do you see the Canvas fitting in to kind of your day-to-day developer, people that are working business applications and maybe vanilla websites that aren’t doing kind of cutting edge stuff with interactivity with users? Is there a still a place for the Canvas in those scenarios? [Dan] Yeah, definitely. I think a lot of us — and I include myself here — over the last few years, the focus has generally been, especially if you’re, let’s say, a PHP or ASP.NET or Java type of developer, we’re kind of accustomed to working on the server side, and, you know, we kind of relied on Flash or Silverlight or these other plug-ins for the client side stuff when it was kind of fancy, like charts and graphs and things along those lines. With the what I call massive shift of applications, you know, mainly because of mobile, to more of client side, one of the big benefits I think from a maybe corporate standard way of thinking of things, since we do a lot of work with different corporations, is that, number one, rather than having to have the plug-in, which of course isn’t going to work on iPad and some of these other devices out there that are pretty popular, you can now use a built-in technology that all the modern browsers support, and that includes things like Safari on the iPad and iPhone and the Android tablets and things like that with their browsers, and actually render some really sophisticated charts. Whether you do it by scratch or from scratch or, you know, get a third party type of library involved, it’s just JavaScript. So it downloads fast so it’s good from a performance perspective; and when it comes to what you can render, it’s extremely robust. You can do everything from, you know, your basic circles to polygons or polylines to really advanced gradients as well and even provide some interactivity and animations, and that’s some of the stuff I touch upon in the class. In fact, you mentioned the last part of the outline there is building a custom data chart and that’s kind of gears towards more of the, what I’d call enterprise or corporate type developer. [Fritz] Yeah, that makes sense. And it’s, you know, a lot of the demos I’ve seen with HTML5 focus on more the interactivity and kind of game side of things, but the Canvas is such a diverse element within HTML5 that I can see it being applicable pretty much anywhere. So why don’t we talk a little bit about some of the specifics of what you cover? You talk about drawing and then manipulating pixels. You want to kind of give us the different ways of working with the Canvas and what some of those APIs provide for you? [Dan] Sure. So going all the way back to the start of the outline, we actually started off by showing different demonstrations of the Canvas in action, and we show some fun stuff — multimedia apps and games and things like that — and then also some more business scenarios; and then once you see that, hopefully it kinds of piques your interest and you go, oh, wow, this is actually pretty phenomenal what you can do. So then we start you off with, so how to you actually draw things. Now, there are some libraries out there that will draw things like graphs, but if you want to customize those or just build something you have from scratch, you need to know the basics, such as, you know, how do you draw circles and lines and arcs and Bezier curves and all those fancy types of shapes that a given chart may have on it or that a game may have in it for that matter. So we start off by covering what I call the core API functions; how do you, for instance, fill a rectangle or convert that to a square by setting the height and the width; how do you draw arcs or different types of curves and there’s different types supported such as I mentioned Bezier curves or quadratic curves; and then we also talk about how do you integrate text into it. You might have some images already that are just regular bitmap type images that you want to integrate, you can do that with a Canvas. And you can even sync video into the Canvas, which actually opens up some pretty interesting possibilities for both business and I think just general multimedia apps. Once you kind of get those core functions down for the basic shapes that you need to be able to draw on any type of Canvas, then we go a little deeper into what are the pixels that are there to manipulate. And that’s one of the important things to understand about the HTML5 Canvas, scalable vector graphics is another thing you can use now in the modern browsers; it’s vector based. Canvas is pixel based. And so we talk about how to do gradients, how can you do transforms, you know, how do you scale things or rotate things, which is extremely useful for charts ’cause you might have text that, you know, flips up on its side for a y-axis or something like that. And you can even do direct pixel manipulation. So it’s really, really powerful. If you want to get down to the RGBA level, you can do that, and I show how to do that in the course, and then kind of wrap that section up with some animation fundamentals. [Fritz] Great. Yeah, that’s really powerful stuff for programmatically rendering data to clients and responding to user inputs. Look forward to seeing what everyone’s going to come up with building this stuff. • Exchange migration to 2007 making Outlook 2003 unable to read meeting requests

  Hi, We are currently moving from Exchange 2003 to 2007 (8.2 build 176.2). We have encounted an issue with one user. In Outlook 2003 when getting a meeting request: "Can't open this item. Could not complete the operation. One or more parameter values are nto valid." The item cannot be previewed in the reading pane either. The item can be viewed in OWA and iPhone fine. I've tried with cache mode off and on. Different computers. Same issue. There are the following entries on the account: SMTP [email protected] [email protected] X400 C=AU;A= ;P=Company Name;O=Exchange;S=LastName;G=FirstName; I'm loathe to recreate the account. This will be an extreme last resort. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• How to make computer interface with circuit

  I understand that I can build a circuit that will do whatever I like (ex: a simple circuit that will turn on a motor to open the blinds or something), and I can write a program that will automate my computer/mac however I like (ex: open this program at this time, or with this input and create a new file, ect). My question is, how can I interface the two? Is there an easy DIY or cheap commercial (or not cheap but functional) USB plug that will turn on/off from computer commands? I'm basically looking for some sort of on/off switch I can script/applescript. How would you even approach this problem, would I have to write my own driver some where along the way?

• DD-WRT with native IPv6

  My ISP provides native IPv6 support (ie. I can plug in my computer straight into the WAN and get an IPv6 address). However I can not get this working on DD-WRT. When I enable IPv6 and radvd in DD-WRT, the router gets in IPv6 address, but the devices on my LAN do not. I tried looking at the DD-WRT wiki, but this only displayed instructions for tunneling or other methods where native support isn't available. I found a small amount of sites thorough searching, but none of the methods these sites described gave my computers each a global IPv6 address. In addition, SSHing into the router using ping6 on sites such as ipv6.google.com causes "host unreachable" errors. Has anyone using DD-WRT configured a successful setup with native IPv6? I am using a Netgear WNDR3700 v2, with DD-WRT build 17201

• "TMGR is Missing" after repair-installing Windows XP

  Hello there, I have two OSes installed in my computer. - Windows XP Professional - Windows 7 Ultimate (Release Candidate 1/Build 7100) I used the Windows 7 boot loader by default to choose between OSes. When I was using my WinXP, my computer gets lagged suddenly and continuously, and the only way to fix it is by repair-installing it (because I've experienced this many times before, but without W7 installed). Everything goes OK. But when my XP was successfully reinstalled, I cannot boot my Windows 7 anymore. Every time I tried to boot the harddisk that contains W7, an error appeared. "TMGR is Missing". Now I have no idea how can I get back to my Windows 7. Any kind of help would be appreciated! :)

• Setting up Github post-receive webhook with private Jenkins and private repo

  I'm trying to set up a private GitHub project to send a post-receive request to a private Jenkins instance to trigger a project build on branch push. Using latest Jenkins with the GitHub plugin. I believe I set up everything correctly on the Jenkins side because when sending a request from a public server with curl like this: curl http://username:password@ipaddress:port/github-webhook/ results in: Stacktrace: net.sf.json.JSONException: null object which is fine because the JSON payload is missing. Sending the wrong username and password in the URI results in: Exception: Failed to login as username I interpret this as a correct Jenkins configuration. Both of these requests also result in entries in the Jenkins log. However, when pasting the exact same URI from above into the Github repository Post-Receive URLs Service Hook and clicking on Test Hook, absolutely nothing seems to happen on my server. Nothing in the Jenkins log and the GitHub Hook Log in the Jenkins project says Polling has not run yet. I have run out of ideas and don't know how to proceed further.

• Is OpenTK Dead?

  Looking at OpenTK, I notice some disturbing signs: The last news item was posted on December 31st, 2010 The main forum gets about one post a day On SourceForge, the last nightly build was in March, and the last release was 2010. Does OpenTK exist anymore, or is it abandonware now? Edit: Some people have expressed concern at my use of "ambiguous" and "loaded terms" like "dead," "abandonware," and others. What I'm asking is this: software projects comprise of many pieces: The actual software project (such as OpenTK) A group of people who maintain the software (project leads, core developers) Some vehicle by which users can find and consume the latest versions (such as releasing daily builds) A community (can I ask questions about it? Get answers?) Updates (are there new features? New releases? Active development? A roadmap?) Some projects have all of these things. Most have a few. Some have nothing, other than maybe the actual software project itself. Is OpenTK one of these? Because it seems like: The actual software project is stable The maintainers don't contribute to it anymore There are no more latest versions (daily builds), not since 2010 (2+ years) The community is very low-traffic (nobody is asking/answering questions, who is actually using this anyway?) There are no updates since 2010

• Copyrights concerning code snippets and larger amounts of code

  I am designing a public code repository. Users will be allowed to post and edit whatever amount of code they want, from code snippets to entire multi-file projects. I have a few major legal concerns about this: Not getting sued/shut down - I feel the site would be a much easier target than tracking down an individual user to sue. I have looked around a bit and see links to legal info in the footer of each page is common. What specific things should I do--and what does does a site such as YouTube (which I see copyrighted material on all the time) do--for protection? Citing sources and editing sourced code - If a user wants to post code that isn't theirs, what concerns/safeguards should I have? Will a link suffice, and what do I need further to allow the code to be edited (to improve it for example)? What can happen if a user posts copyrighted code without citing it? Large chunks of code - What legal differences should I look out for as the amount grows? Not having a mess of licenses for the site - I would like to have a single license (like RosettaCode) that keeps things simple for interaction on the site. I want the code to be postable and editable. I have looked into StackOverflow's CreativeCommons license a little and it says that If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one. And on RosettaCode: All software found on Rosetta Code should be considered potentially hazardous. Use at your own risk. • Service Level Loggin/Tracing

  We all love to develop services, right? First timers want to learn technologies like WCF and Web Services. Some simply want to build services; whereas, others may find services as natural architectural decision for particular systems. Whatever the reason might be, services are commonly used in building wide range of systems. Developers often encapsulates various functionality (small or big) within one or more services, and expose them for multiple applications. Sometimes from day one (and definitely over time) these services may evolve into a set of black boxes. Services or not, black boxes or not, issues and exceptions are sometimes hard to avoid, especially in highly evolving and transactional systems. We can try to be methodical with our unit testing, QA and overall process; but we may not be able to avoid some type of system issues. When issues arise from one or more highly transactional services, it becomes necessary to resolve them very quickly. When systems handle thousands of transaction in matter of hours, some issues may not surface immediately. That is when service level logging becomes very useful. Technologies such as WCF, allow us to enable service level tracing with minimal effort; but that may not provide us with complete picture. Developers may need to add tracing within critical areas of the code with various degrees of verbosity. Programmer can always utilize some logging framework such as the 'Logging Application Block' to get the job done. It may seem overkill sometimes; but I have noticed from my experience that service level logging helps programmer trace many issues very quickly.

• A dacpac limitation – Deploy dacpac wizard does not understand SqlCmd variables

  Since the release of SQL Server 2012 I have become a big fan of using dacpacs for deploying SQL Server databases (for reasons that I will explain some other day) and I chose to use a dacpac to distribute my recently announced utility sp_ssiscatalog (read: Introducing sp_ssiscatalog (v1.0.0.0)). Unfortunately if you read that blog post you may have taken note of the following: Ordinarily a dacpac can be deployed to a SQL Server from SSMS using the Deploy Dacpac wizard however in this case there is a limitation. Due to sp_ssiscatalog referring to objects in the SSIS Catalog (which it has to do of course) the dacpac contains a SqlCmd variable to store the name of the database that underpins the SSIS Catalog; unfortunately the Deploy Dacpac wizard in SSMS has a rather gaping limitation in that it cannot deploy dacpacs containing SqlCmd variables. I think it is worth calling out this limitation separately in this blog post because its a limitation that all dacpac users need to be aware of. If you try and deploy the dacpac containing sp_ssiscatalog using the wizard in SSMS then this is what you will see: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ Could not deploy package. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Dac) ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Missing values for the following SqlCmd variables:SSISDB. (Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql) ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ The message is quite correct. The SSDT DB project that I used to build this dacpac *does* have a SqlCmd variable in it called SSISDB: Quite simply, the Dac Deployment wizard in SSMS is not capable of deploying such dacpacs. Your only option for deploying such dacpacs is to use the command-line tool sqlpackage.exe. Generally I use sqlpackage.exe anyway (which is why it has taken me months to encounter the aforementioned problem) and have found it preferable to using a GUI-based wizard. Your mileage may vary. @Jamiet
