  Finally, yes, CodePlex now supports Git! Git has been one of the top rated requests from the CodePlex community for some time: Admittedly, when we launched CodePlex, we never expected that at some point we would be running a source control system originally invented by Linus Torvalds to use for the Linux kernel. Though I would also say, nobody would have thought the open source ecosystem would be as important to Microsoft as it has become now. Giving CodePlex users what they ask for and supporting their open source efforts has always been important to us, and we have a long list of improvements planned, so stay tuned as we have more up our sleeves! Why Git? So why Git? CodePlex already has Mercurial for distributed version control and TFS (which also supports subversion clients) for centralized version control. The short answer is that the CodePlex community voted, loud and clear, that Git support was critical. Additionally, we just like it, we use Git on our team every day and making the DVCS workflows more available to the CodePlex community is just the right thing to do. Forks and Pull Requests One of the capabilities that distributed version control systems, such as Mercurial and Git, enable is the Fork and Pull Request workflow.  Just like with Mercurial, projects configured to use Git enable Forking the source and submitting contributions back via Pull Requests. The Fork/Pull Request workflow is a key accelerator to many open source projects and you will see improvements in our support coming later this year. More Choice With the addition of Git, now CodePlex has three options when it comes to Open Source project hosting. Projects can now select between TFS, Mercurial, and Git. Each developer has their own preferences, and for some, centralized version control makes more sense to them. For others, DVCS is the only way to go. • Sql Table Refactoring Challenge

  Ive been working a bit on cleaning up a large table to make it more efficient.  I pretty much know what I need to do at this point, but I figured Id offer up a challenge for my readers, to see if they can catch everything I have as well as to see if Ive missed anything.  So to that end, I give you my table: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[lq_ActivityLog]( [ID] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [PlacementID] [int] NOT NULL, [CreativeID] [int] NOT NULL, [PublisherID] [int] NOT NULL, [CountryCode] [nvarchar](10) NOT NULL, [RequestedZoneID] [int] NOT NULL, [AboveFold] [int] NOT NULL, [Period] [datetime] NOT NULL, [Clicks] [int] NOT NULL, [Impressions] [int] NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_lq_ActivityLog2] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [Period] ASC, [PlacementID] ASC, [CreativeID] ASC, [PublisherID] ASC, [RequestedZoneID] ASC, [AboveFold] ASC, [CountryCode] ASC)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]) ON [PRIMARY] And now some assumptions and additional information: The table has 200,000,000 rows currently PlacementID ranges from 1 to 5000 and should support at least 50,000 CreativeID ranges from 1 to 5000 and should support at least 50,000 PublisherID ranges from 1 to 500 and should support at least 50,000 CountryCode is a 2-character ISO standard (e.g. US) and there is a country table with an integer ID already.  There are < 300 rows. RequestedZoneID ranges from 1 to 100 and should support at least 50,000 AboveFold has values of 1, 0, or 1 only. Period is a date (no time). Clicks range from 0 to 5000. Impressions range from 0 to 5000000. The table is currently write-mostly.  Its primary purpose is to log advertising activity as quickly as possible.  Nothing in the rest of the system reads from it except for batch jobs that pull the data into summary tables. Heres the current information on the database tables size: Design Goals This table has been in use for about 5 years and has performed very well during that time.  The only complaints we have are that it is quite large and also there are occasionally timeouts for queries that reference it, particularly when batch jobs are pulling data from it.  Any changes should be made with an eye toward keeping write performance optimal  while trying to reduce space and improve read performance / eliminate timeouts during read operations. Refactor There are, I suggest to you, some glaringly obvious optimizations that can be made to this table.  And Im sure there are some ninja tweaks known to SQL gurus that would be a big help as well.  Ill post my own suggested changes in a follow-up post for now feel free to comment with your suggestions. • Why does my goblin only choose a walk direction once?

  I'm working on a simpe 2d canvas game that has a small goblin sprite who I want to get pathing around the screen. What I originally tried was a random roll that would choose a direction, the goblin would walk that direction. It didnt work effectively, he sort of wobbled in one spot. Here's my current apporach but he only runs in a rundom direction and doesnt change. What am I doing wrong? • Encoded nsstring becomes invalid, "normal" nsstring remains

  I'm running into a problem with a string that contains encoded characters. I have a button on the nav bar which begins an image import process by opening an action sheet. Once the method for the action sheet starts, my string is invalid - but only if it contains encoded characters. If it is just a "normal" string, everything is fine and acts as expected. Am I off on my encoding? At first I thought it might be a memory problem but I can't figure out why that would affect only encoded strings. By using breakpoints I was able to see that the encodedSourceFolder is invalid in the action sheet method.

• Saving UIImagePickerController images to Core Data without crashing

  I have been trying to minimize my memory footprint with UIImagePickerController, but I'm starting to think that the memory problems I am having are resulting from poor memory management, instead of a particular way to handle the UIImagePickerController object. My workflow is this: The "Edit Image" button is clicked, which presents a UIActionSheet. This action sheet allows you to delete, take a picture, choose from the library, or cancel. It leads me to believe that I am not getting that full image out of memory the correct way. What am I missing here? And on a second note, does the Camera source use significantly more memory than the Photo Albums source? I tend to get more crashes when using the camera.

• GKTank example is not working.

  Hello, I'm trying to get the GKTank example working with 2 iPhones. Both have bluetooth enabled. I start the app on both devices and tap the screen. The Peer Picker comes up and the devices find each other. If I select one device in the list it says "Waiting for {other iPhone}..." forever. On the {other iPhone} the waiting phone gets grayed out. If I select the device to connect to from both devices at the same time both go into waiting state forever... • internet explorer and google chrome rendering issues

• Change a dropdown depending on another dropdown

  I'm trying to create a three select dropdowns that represent a persons birthday. I'm taking into consideration that there are 4 months with 30 days, 7 with 31 ,and 1 with 28 or 29 depending if it's a leap year or not. I would like the days dropdown to show the number of days depending on which month is chosen in the month dropdown. Here's what I have now.   I have a Windows 2003 R2 machine that is giving an Event ID 8197 about once an hour and ten minutes. The full error is attached below. The machine is primary used to host IIS webpages and SMTP. There is no known scheduled tasks on the machine. I have read a lot of Google Search and Microsoft docs, but none of the suggestions found there have any impact. What I am curious is if there is any way to convert the SRMVOLMC81 and SRMVOLMC57 into mount point data so I could at least know where the error is sourcing from (there are no related errors in the logs, just the 8197 every hour and ten). • Redmine git integration - issue in accessing git from redmine but not from external git client

  I have setup redmine integration with apache as described in the redmine documentation. I have a /git path accessible with auth and /git-private accessible only to redmine. When I clone the repository through /git path, I get the up-to-date repo. But when I try to view it in redmine repo viewer, I get a 404 "The entry or revision was not found in the repository." error. Trying to clone using the git-private url in the redmine box gives a bare repository though it is the same repo as the one cloned by the /git path. I have enabled RedmineGitSmartHttp in the /git path. What could be the issue here? • Are VMWare ESXi 5 patches cumulative?

  It seems basic, but there's confusion about the patching strategy needed to manually update standalone VMWare ESXi hosts. The VMWare vSphere blog attempts to explain this, but it's still not clear. From the blog: Say Patch01 includes updates for the following VIBs: "esxi-base", "driver10" and "driver 44". And then later Patch02 comes out with updates to "esxi-base", "driver20" and "driver 44". P2 is cumulative in that the "esxi-base" and "driver44" VIBs will include the updates in Patch01. However, it's important to note that Patch02 not include the "driver 10" VIB as that module was not updated. Many of my ESXi installations are standalone and do not make use of Update Manager. It is possible to update an individual host using the patches make available through the VMWare patch download portal. The process is quite simple, and that part makes sense. The bigger issue is determining what to actually download and install. In my case, I have a good number of HP-specific ESXi builds that incorporate sensors and management for HP ProLiant hardware. Let's say that those servers start at ESXi build #474610 from 9/2011. Looking at the patch portal screenshot below, there is a patch for ESXi update01, build #623860. There are also patches for builds #653509 and #702118. Coming from the old version of ESXi, what is the proper approach to bring the system fully up-to-date? Which patches are cumulative and which need to be applied sequentially? Perhaps the download size is the confusing factor, but is installing the newest build the right approach, or do I need to step back and patch incrementally?

Use 'LogLevel debug' to get a backtrace. I have no idea what's causing this. As far as I can see, Mono isn't even hit (no log files are created).

  Currently I had a situation where I sent an email to [email protected], but when I receive mail from [email protected], it showed as [email protected], with extra '.com' behind the email address, this just happen within this week. Before this, I didn't change any setting, currently I am using Outlook 2010. When I checked the email in webmail, it also showed it as [email protected]. It seem that it has nothing to do with Outlook. However, I also tried on Thunderbird 16.0.1, but still the problem is the same. Has anyone experienced this before? • Intel 1.83 Mac Mini upgraded to 1.5 gig for Snow Leopard

  Even though I've upgraded countless video cards, RAM, harddrives, motherboards in PCs... this will be my first mac mini RAM upgrade. I've watched the classic "putty knife" video. (Absurd method... but I guess it's what I'm stuck with.) I have a 1.83 Intel-based Mac Mini from 2007-2008, with 1 gig of RAM. (Two 512 sticks) Can I install 1 gig + 512 ? (Or do I have to throw away my existing sticks and buy two 1 gig sticks?) This old machine is rarely used... so I want to spend the absolute minimum on this RAM upgrade. We ONLY use it to run xCode... nothing more. But wanted to increase the RAM so we can install Snow Leopard. I have no idea how many pins the memory has. I printed out over FORTY pages of specs about this machine from "About this Mac"... but didn't find what I needed.   What keyboard shortcuts do you use in Excel? Things I've discovered recently and found very useful are: Shift + Space - select the current row Ctrl + Space - select the current column Ctrl + Shift + Space - select the block of contiguous cell Ctrl + + - Insert (as in the context menu). If the current row is selected, will insert a new row. Ctrl + - - Delete (as in the context menu). If the current row is selected, will delete entire row. What (apart from the normal cut, copy, paste, etc) do you use? Ctrl + 1 to open the Format dialog. Shift + F2 to add/edit a cell comment. Shift + F2, followed by Esc to select the current cell comment, which can then be moved around with the arrow keys (????) or deleted by pressing Del. Ctrl + ???? to move to the last non-blank cell in a series. This is usually the edge of a table, but not if you have blank cells in the path. Pressing End followed by an arrow key does the same thing. Alt + F11 to open the VBA editor. Alt + = to start a SUM() formula and go straight to selecting cells to be summed. Ctrl + G or F5 to jump to a cell by typing its coordinates (e.g. C3) Ctrl + Home to jump to the top left, usually A1 unless you you are in a frozen split view, in which case it will jump to the top left of the "data" area. Ctrl + ; and Ctrl + Shift + ; to insert the current date and time, respectively. I know Ben Lings already posted this one, but I find it indispensable.
