• Visual Studio 2010 Productivity Tips and Tricks&ndash;Part 1: Extensions

  I don’t know about you, but when it comes to development, I prefer my environment to be as free of clutter as possible.  It may surprise you to know that I have tried ReSharper, and did not like it, for the reason that I stated above.  In my opinion, it had too much clutter.  Don’t get me wrong, there were a couple of features that I did like about it (inversion of if blocks, code feedback), but for the most part, I actually felt that it was slowing me down. Introduction Another large factor besides intrusiveness/speed in my choice to dislike ReSharper would probably be that I have become comfortable with my current setup and extensions.  I believe I have a good collection, and am quite happy with what I can accomplish in a short amount of time.  I figured that I would share some of my tips/findings regarding Visual Studio productivity here, and see what you had to say. The first section of things that I would like to cover, are Visual Studio Extensions.  In case you have been living under a rock for the past several years, Extensions are available under the Tools menu in Visual Studio: The extension manager enables integrated access to the Microsoft Visual Studio Gallery online with access to a few thousand different extensions.  I have tried many extensions, but for reasons of lack reliability, usability, or features, have uninstalled almost all of them.  However, I have come across several that I find I can not do without anymore: NuGet Package Manager (Microsoft) Perspectives (Adam Driscoll) Productivity Power Tools (Microsoft) Web Essentials (Mads Kristensen) Extensions NuGet Package Manager To be honest, I debated on whether or not to put this in here.  Most people seem to have it, however, there was a time when I didn’t, and was always confused when blogs/posts would say to right click and “Add Package Reference…” which with one of the latest updates is now “Manage NuGet Packages”.  So, if you haven’t downloaded the NuGet Package Manager yet, or don’t know what it is, I would highly suggest downloading it now! Features Simply put, the NuGet Package Manager gives you a GUI and command line to access different libraries that have been uploaded to NuGet. Some of its features include: Ability to search NuGet for packages via the GUI, with information in the detail bar on the right. Quick access to see what packages are in a solution, and what packages have updates available, with easy 1-click updating. If you download a package that requires references to work on other NuGet packages, they will be downloaded and referenced automatically. Productivity Tip If you use any type of source control in Visual Studio as well as using NuGet packages, be sure to right-click on the solution and click "Enable NuGet Package Restore". What this does is add a NuGet package to the solution so that it will be checked in along side your solution, as well as automatically grab packages from NuGet on build if needed. This is an extremely simple system to use to manage your package references, instead of having to manually go into TFS and add the Packages folder. Perspectives I can't stand developing with just one monitor. Especially if it comes to debugging. The great thing about Visual Studio 2010, is that all of the panels and windows are floatable, and can dock to other screens. The only bad thing is, I don't use the same toolset with everything that I am doing. By this, I mean that I don't use all of the same windows for debugging a web application, as I do for coding a WPF application. Only thing is, Visual Studio doesn't save the screen positions for all of the undocked windows. So, I got curious one day and decided to check and see if there was an extension to help out. This is where I found Perspectives. Features Perspectives gives you the ability to configure window positions across any or your monitors, and then to save the positions in a profile. Perspectives offers a Panel to manage different presets/favorites, and a toolbar to add to the toolbars at the top of Visual Studio. Ability to 'Favorite' a profile to add it to the perspectives toolbar. Productivity Tip Take the time to setup profiles for each of your scenarios - debugging web/winforms/xaml, coding, maintenance, etc. Try to remember to use the profiles for a few days, and at the end of a week, you may find that your productivity was never better. Productivity Power Tools Ah, the Productivity Power Tools... Quite possibly one of my most used extensions, if not my most used. The tool pack gives you a variety of enhancements ranging from key shortcuts, interface tweaks, and completely new features to Visual Studio 2010. Features I don't want to bore you with all of the features here, so here are my favorite: Quick Find - Unobtrusive search box in upper-right corner of the code window. Great for searching in general, especially in a file. Solution Navigator - The 'Solution Explorer' on steroids. Easy to search for files, see defined members/properties/methods in files, and my favorite feature is the 'set as root' option. Updated 'Add Reference...' Dialog - This is probably my favorite enhancement period... The 'Add Reference...' dialog redone in a manner that resembles the Extension/Package managers. I especially love the ability to search through all of the references. "Ctrl - Click" for Definition - I am still getting used to this as I usually try to use my keyboard for everything, but I love the ability to hold Ctrl and turn property/methods/variables into hyperlinks, that you click on to see their definitions. Great for travelling down a rabbit hole in an application to research problems. While there are other commands/utilities, I find these to be the ones that I lean on the most for the usefulness. Web Essentials If you have do any type of web development in ASP .Net, ASP .Net MVC, even HTML, I highly suggest grabbing the Web Essentials right NOW! This extension alone is great for productivity in web development, and greatly decreases my development time on new features. Features Some of its best features include: CSS Previews - I say 'previews' because of the multiple kinds of previews in CSS that you get font-family, color, background/background-image previews. This is great for just tweaking UI slightly in different ways and seeing how they look in the CSS window at a glance. Live Preview - One word - awesome! This goes well with my multi-monitor setup. I put the site on one monitor in a Live Preview panel, and then as I make changes to CSS/cshtml/aspx/html, the preview window will update with each save/build automatically. For CSS, you can even turn on live-update, so as you are tweaking CSS, the style changes in real time. Great for tweaking colors or font-sizes. Outlining - Small, but I like to be able to collapse regions/declarations that are in the way of new work, or are just distracting. Commenting Shortcuts - I don't know why it wasn't included by default, but it is nice to have the key shortcuts for commenting working in the CSS editor as well. Productivity Tip When working on a site, hit CTRL-ALT-ENTER to launch the Live Preview window. Dock it to another monitor. When you make changes to the document/css, just save and glance at the other monitor. No need to alt tab, then alt tab before continuing editing. Conclusion These extensions are only the most useful and least intrusive - ones that I use every day. The great thing about Visual Studio 2010 is the extensibility options that it gives developers to utilize. Have an extension that you use that isn't intrusive, but isn't listed here? Please, feel free to comment. I love trying new things, and am always looking for new additions to my toolset of the most useful. For example I want to transfer a file, the first packet I send is: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Content-type: application/force-download Content-Type: application/download Content-Type: application/octet-stream Content-Description: File Transfer Content-disposition: attachment; filename=test.dat Content-Transfer-Encoding: chunked 400 <first 1024 bytes here> 400 <next 1024 bytes here> 400 <next 1024 bytes here> Now I need to make a new packet, if I just send: 400 <next 1024 bytes here> All the clients close there connections on me and the files are cut short. What headers do I put in a second packet to continue on with the data stream?

• Simple Android OpenGL App Lag

  Hi, I have an Android OpenGL application which simply draws 2D squares (using 2 triangles) and animates them moving down the screen. I essentially do this by running: glLoadIdentity(), then glTranslatef, and finally glDrawElements all in a for loop. (The for loop is to draw all 10 blocks on the screen for every frame). In every drawFrame, the y-position of the blocks increments for the animation. The problem I'm having is strange. I run the application and the animation is laggy and not smooth. Then I re-run the application and I get a smooth animation. If I run again, I may get a smooth animation, or possibly not. Is my method correct, or is there a better way of doing this animation? • How do I set a VB.Net ComboBox default value

  I can not locate the correct method to make the first item in a combo box visible. The app starts with an empty combo box. The user makes a radio box selection then clicks Go! (how original). The combo box is loaded via an LDAP query. All this is working just fine. The problem is the combo box still appears to the user to be empty. They must click the arrow to see the options. How do I make the first option 'visible' after the users clicks Go!? I thought it would be simple... Thanks, Ed

  I am accessing Lotus and Groupwise using javamail via IMAP, recursively accessing all folders and processing email I find. But in folders like Tasklist and Calendar (those are from Groupwise but I think I remember Lotus had similar things), I get the items in there as instances of IMAPMessage, and so they are processed as if they were mail. I understand those items get exposed as mail through the IMAP protocol (either by design or by mistake), but I only want to process proper mail. Is there a way to do this? I have dismissed following approaches so far: Make sure the message has a message-id, at least in Groupwise Calendar items have it. Ignore folders by name (such as Calendar and Tasklist): is not totally correct as a user can move mail inside those folders. What I am looking is some IMAP api call I have missed so far or something in those lines...

• IIS7 - Specifying content-length header in ASP causes "connection reset" error

  I'm migrating a series of websites from an existing IIS5 server to a brand new IIS7 web server. One of the pages pulls a data file from a blob in the database and serves it to the end user: Response.ContentType = rs("contentType") Response.AddHeader "Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename=" & Trim(rs("docName"))&rs("suffix")' let the browser know the file name Response.AddHeader "Content-Length", cstr(rs("docsize"))' let the browser know the file size Testing this in the new IIS7 install, I get a "Connection Reset" error in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. The document is served up correctly if the Content-Length header is removed (but then the user won't get a useful progress bar). Any ideas on how to correct this; whether it be a server configuration option or via code? Thanks.

• Zend + Pop Up's balloons on Server Problem

  Dear Friends from Stackoverflow, Please help me with a problem that i'm having when uploading my project to the server. I'm using pop up's balloons (http://mckay.cshl.edu/balloons.html) for a project using Zend FW and it works fine on my localhost. (I'm using MAMP on MacOSX) but when I upload the webpage to the server, the text inside the balloons is displayed but the images that form the balloon are not, so somehow the js does not recognize the url to the images (the path it's correct, i've checked several times). The server is an Ubuntu 9.04 virtual machine from rackspace.com, running a LAMP server. I'm using the REWRITE function in Apache, so i guess maybe that's the problem. The rewrite configuration is set up using a .htaccess file with the following content: SetEnv APPLICATION_ENV development Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine ON RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule !.(js|ico|txt|gif|jpg|png|css|html)$ index.php Does anyone knows what the problem might be?   When using GenericGenerator to generate unique identifiers, do Hibernate session methods update() and saveOrUpdate() always insert instead of update table rows, even when the given object has an existing identifier (where the identifier is also the table primary key)? • AS2 acts randomly when changing scenes on the first frame

  I have a flash movie containing to scenes: scene1, scene2. I have chosen the order so that scene1 starts first, I was requested to add a functionality to allow flashvars to be passed, if fv_change equals one then scene2 should be the first to appear when the movie is loaded. I have included the following code in scene1 first frame of some layer: this.onEnterFrame = function() { delete this.onEnterFrame; if (isset==undefined && _root.fv_change && _root.fv_change==1) { isset = true; gotoAndStop("scene2",1); } } when testing in my flash environment everything worked fine, when I exported it to an HTML & SWF combo I got random results, I refreshed the page several times and some of the times scene2 appeared and some of the times it stayed with scene1. Am I doing something wrong? what is the correct way to change scene order using AS2 and external data(flashvars for that matter).

  Hi there, I'm having an issue getting files loaded into an app called GCS, by dragging them onto the executable. GCS can be invoked on Windows with a bat file, which goes like this: @echo off start javaw -Xmx256M -jar "GURPS Character Sheet.app/Contents/Resources/Java/GCS.jar" %* If I hard code a filepath in place of the batch argument wildcard (with quotes), it works. If I run the debugger with a filepath argument it works. If I echo %, it gives me the correct filename with quotes around it. If I add quotes around % it still breaks. I have a disconnect here between DOS and Java, and I'm at a loss. Does anyone recognize this problem? Thanks in advance.

However I still can't understand why I got the double abet value instead of what I got when I ran it on Cygwin, Ubuntu and iDeneb which is roughly -1950228512509697486020297654959439872418023994430148306244153100897726713609 013030397828640261329800797420159101801613476402327600937901161313172717568.0 00000 can be written 2.725000e+02 Any ideas?

• How to calculate unbound column value based on value of bound colum in DatagGridView?

  Hi. I have few columns in my DataGridView, one of them is an unbound column and the DataGridVIew is in VirtualMode. When CellValueNeeded event is called, I want to calculate value of Cells[0] basing on the value of Cells[2] which is in bounded column to the underlaying DataSource. This is how I try to do this: private void dgvItems_CellValueNeeded(object sender, DataGridViewCellValueEventArgs e) { e.Value = dgvItems.CurrentRow.Cells[2].Value * 5; //simplified example } However, I am getting System.StackOverflowException because it seams that call to dgvItems.CurrentRow.Cells[2].Value results in call to another CellValueNeeded event. And so on and so on... However Cells[2] is not an unbound column, so on common sense it should not result in recursive call unless getting value of any column(bound or unbound) firest that event... I can not use here SQL Expression and I can not precalculate e.Value in any SQL call. In real example Cells[2].Value is a key used in HashTable which will return a correct value for the Cells[0] (e.Value). What can I do?

• JavaScript distributed computing project

  I made a website that does absolutely nothing, and I've proven to myself that people like to stay there - I've already logged 11+ hours worth of cumulative time on the page. My question is whether it would be possible (or practical) to use the website as a distributed computing site. My first impulse was to find out if there were any JavaScript distributed computing projects already active, so that I could put a piece of code on the page and be done. Unfortunately, all I could find was a big list of websites that thought it might be a cool idea. I'm thinking that I might want to start with something like integer factorization - in this case, RSA numbers. It would be easy for the server to check if an answer was correct (simply test for modulus equals zero), and also easy to implement. Is my idea feasible? Is there already a project out there that I can use?

• MS Access 2003 - Formatting results in a list box problem.

  So I have a list box that displays averages in a table like format from a crossyab query. It's just what I need the query is right, there is just one thing. I had to set the field properties in the query as format: standard..decimal:2. Which is exactly what I needed. However..the list box will not pick up on this. First I typed the crosstab sql into the list box's properties....and then I ran into this problem. So then I actually just created the query object, saved it and set that as the rowsource for the list box. Still won't work....when I open the query it is the correct format. So is there a way to further format a text box? Is there a way tell it to limit decimal places to one or two on returned values? Thanks!

• How do I handle a JSON request returning a String in JQuery?

  Hi all, New to json/jQuery so sorry if this has an obvious answer. I'm doing an ajax request in jQuery that's something like: $.ajax({ url: theURL, dataType: 'jsonp', type: 'get', success: function(data) { alert("it's there"); } }); The request asks whether a given object is in a database. If it is, it returns something of the format: { "text": "duck", "canonical_name": "duck", "language": { "id": "en" }} However, if the object isn't there, it returns: Not Found As in...literally that exact string, not in any kind of json format as far as I know. Is there any way I can get my ajax to detect this? Right now it doesn't even seem to be acknowledging that it got anything back in the latter case. The json code wasn't written by me. It can possibly be fixed if this is not the correct format and there's absolutely nothing I can do from my end to work with this, but I'd really like to try to find some kind of workaround if possible. • Cocoa Core Data - Efficient Related Entities Counts

  I am working on my first iPhone application and I've hit a wall. I'm trying to develop a 'statistics' page for a three entity relationship. My entities are the following: Department - Name, Address, Building, etc. People - Name, Gender (BOOL), Phone, etc If I have fetched a specific department how do I filter those results and only return people that are Male (Gender == 0)? If I do NSLog(@"%d", [department.people count]); I get the correct number of people in that department so I know I'm in the neighborhood. I know I could re-fetch and modify the predicate each time but with 20+ stats in my app that seems inefficient. Thanks for any advice!

• fileinfo and mime types I've never heard of

  I'm not a stranger to mime types but this is strange. Normally, a text file would have been considered to be of text/plain mime but now, after implementing fileinfo, this type of file is now considered to be "text/x-pascal". I'm a little concerned because I need to be sure that I get the correct mime types set before allowing users to upload with it. Is there a cheat sheet that will give me all of the "common" mimes as they are interpreted by fileinfo? Sinan provided a link that lists all of the more common mimes. If you look at this list, you will see that a .txt file is of text/plain mime but in my case, a plain-jane text file is interpreted as text/pascal.

  Hi At the following site http://www.r2integrated.com/clients/FMX/index.html In IE 6 & 7 the footer's background should be grey; outside of the white box. It looks correct in firefox, chrome & IE8, but not IE6 & 7 the footer's background is white and inside the box. I have tried many things with no luck.
