• Unsure about TRIM enabled on my SSD

  I have a SSD OCZ Vertex4 installed on my laptop. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have enable TRIM by adding "discard" to my fstab file. (also added option noatime). I rebooted my Ubuntu and followed These instructions here to test TRIM. The end results of my tempfile was all ffff's, when it should have read all zero's, which is telling me TRIM is not really working or enabled correctly. Did I miss something? Also, will it be a problem if only my /home directory is encrypted. AND if you ask why I have swap on my SSD, it's because I let Ubuntu set up my partition. When I have my SSD, I just wanted to install Ubuntu as fast as possible. =) I've done testing to see at which point it will start to use swap and it took a lot of applications open to finally use swap. I currently have 4 GB of memory. I might shrink this to like 512 MB or 1 GB the most. • TraceTune: Improved Comment View

  I wanted an easier way to identify queries I’d already looked at so I could skip them.  I’ve been entering comments for each query as I review it.  These comments typically fall into three categories: a change I made, no easy fix available or something needs to be changed on the client.  TraceTune now highlights any statement with a comment in bold.  If you hover over the statement you’ll see the most recent comment for that statement. This gives me a quick way to see what’s new and identify those queries that still need work.  This is especially helpful when I come back to a server after weeks or months away.  These comments help jar my memory and remind me what I’ve worked on. I made the font slightly smaller in some of the tables.  It’s still readable but I’m able to get more of a SQL statement on the screen.  I also got to re-experience the pain of Internet Explorer, Chrome and FireFox all displaying text (and pop-up text) slightly different. Seeing the comments on a trace has been a big help to me.  I often do a round of tuning and then don’t come back to a server until months later.  Having the comments available helps me get back up to speed quickly.

• No sound after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 from win7

  just as a prefix to my question, i'd like to note that i'm just now entering the world of Linux (unless you count my android, but that's a very different experience...) i have two computers now that run Ubuntu 11.10, the first of which i've had very little problems with, aside from figuring out the basics. the second, from which i'm writing this question, has (up to this point) only had one problem.... no sound. i've read a couple questions similiar and found little help as the component catalog doesn't have my computer listed. • Debugger for file I/O development?

  Okay, the question title may be a bit cryptic. But it aptly describes what I'm looking for: I think every experienced coder went through this numerous times: You get a binary file format specification, you implement the reader for it, and… nothing works like expected. So you run your code in the debugger, go execute through the code line by line, every header field is read in seemingly correct, but when it comes to the bulk data, offset and indices no longer match up. What would really help in this situation was a binary file viewer, that shows you the progress of your file pointer, as you step through the code, and ideally would also highlight all memory maps. Then you could see the context of the current I/O operations, most notably those darn "off-by-one" mistakes, which are even more annoying when reading a file. Implementing such a debugger should not be too hard. traces on the process' file descriptors/handles and triggers on the I/O functions, to update the display. Only: I don't know of such a kind of debugger to exist. Do I just lack knowledge about the existance of such a tool, or is there really no such thing?

• Floating point undesirable in highly critical code?

  Question 11 in the Software Quality section of "IEEE Computer Society Real-World Software Engineering Problems", Naveda, Seidman, lists fp computation as undesirable because "the accuracy of the computations cannot be guaranteed". This is in the context of computing acceleration for an emergency braking system for a high speed train. This thinking seems to be invoking possible errors in small differences between measurements of a moving object but small differences at slow speeds aren't a problem (or shouldn't be), small differences between two measurements at high speed are irrelevant - can there be a problem with small roundoff errors during deceleration for an emergency braking system? This problem has been observed with airplane braking systems resulting in hydroplaning but could this actually happen in the context of a high speed train? The concern about fp errors seems to not be well-founded in this context. Any insight? The fp is used for acceleration so perhaps the concern is inching over a speed limit? But fp should be just fine if they use a double in whatever implementation language. The actual problem in the text states: During the inspection of the code for the emergency braking system of a new high speed train (a highly critical, real-time application), the review team identifies several characteristics of the code. Which of these characteristics are generally viewed as undesirable? The code contains three recursive functions (well that one is obvious). The computation of acceleration uses floating point arithmetic. All other computations use integer arithmetic. The code contains one linked list that uses dynamic memory allocation (second obvious problem). All inputs are checked to determine that they are within expected bounds before they are used.

• Photoshop alternative with same keyboard shorcuts

  tldr; Is there a program with the same keyboard shortcuts and/or user interface as PS. I know the "photoshop alternative" question has been asked so many times, but I feel this variant is worth the time to ask. I am a web designer and have been using PS daily on a windows or mac machine for about 10 years, but I do most of my development in linux. The only thing that has been keeping me from the full switch to linux is PS. I have tried many alternatives, including GIMP, but I feel the barrier to entry is too high for one reason and one reason only, the keyboard shortcuts. Over the years I have become very adept and quick in the use of PS because of keyboard shortcuts and muscle memory. I realize that many shortcuts can be customized, but many actions are just too different from PS. So my question is what programs are out there that are the closest to PS in keyboard shortcuts and interface. I don't care if I have to do a bunch of customization to get it as close as possible, but I just can't take too much time to learn a completely new workflow. Of course I realize that any software will take time and effort, I just want to make that time/effort as minimal as possible. Thanks in advance for your responses. edit I should tell you the most important features and workflow I use on a daily basis are, Smart objects, linked documents, save for web and devises.

• Gathering IP address and workstation information; does it belong in a state class?

  I'm writing an enterprisey utility that collects exception information and writes to the Windows Event Log, sends an email, etc. This utility class will be used by all applications in the corporation: web, BizTalk, Windows Services, etc. Currently this class: holds state given to it via public properties calls out to .NET Framework methods to gather information about runtime details. Included are call to various properties and methods from System.Environment, Reflection details, etc. This implementation has the benefit of allowing all those callers not to have to make these same calls themselves. This means less code for the caller to forget, screw up, etc. Should this state class (please what's the phrase I'm looking for [like DTO]?) know how to resolve/determine runtime details (like the IP address and machine name that it's running on)? • Need a good quality bitmap rotation algorithm for Android

  I am creating a kaleidoscopic effect on an android tablet. I am using the code below to rotate a slice of an image, but as you can see in the image when rotating a bitmap 60 degrees it distorts it quite a lot (red rectangles) – it is smudging the image! I have set dither and anti-alias flags but it does not help much. I think it is just not a very sophisticated bitmap rotation algorithm. canvas.save(); canvas.rotate(angle, screenW/2, screenH/2); canvas.drawBitmap(picSlice, screenW/2, screenH/2, pOutput); canvas.restore(); So I wonder if you can help me find a better way to rotate a bitmap. It does not have to be fast, because I intend to use a high quality rotation only when I want to save the screen to the SD card - I would redraw the screen in memory before saving. Do you know any comprehensible or replicable algorithm for bitmap rotation that I could programme or use as a library? Or any other suggestion? EDIT: The answers below made me think if Android OS had bilinear or bicubic interpolation option and after some search I found that it does have its own version of it called FilterBitmap. After applying it to my paint pOutput.setFilterBitmap(true); I get much better result

• Have there been attempts to make object containers that search for valid programs by auto wiring compatible components?

  I hope this post isn't too "Fringe" - I'm sure someone will just kill it if it is :) Three things made me want to reach out about this now: Decoupling is so in the forefront of design. TDD inspires the idea that it doesn't matter how a program comes to exist as long as it works. Seeing how often the adapter pattern is applied to achieve (1). I'm almost sure this has been tried from a memory of reading about it around the year 2000 or so. If I had to guess, it was maybe about and earlier version of the Java Spring framework. At this time we were not so far from days when the belief was that computer programs could exhibit useful emergent behavior. I think the article said it didn't work, but it didn't say it was impossible. I wonder if since then it has been deemed impossible or simply an illusion due to a false assumption of similarity between a brain and a CPU. I know this illusion existed because I had an internship in 1996 where I programmed neural nets that were supposedly going to exhibit "brain damage". STILL, after all that, I'm sitting around this morning and not able to shake the idea that it should be possible to have a method of programming to allow autonomous components to find each other, attempt to collaborate and their outputs evaluated against a set desired results.

• What relational database system should I learn? [closed]

  At the moment i know sqlite (my favorite), mysql (its ok, i get annoyed) and i do not want to learn ms/t sql (it only allows one nullable row if the column is unique). I am thinking about learning a new database system. My requirements for it is Must allow multiple connections at once (read and write) All or data i choose must be ACID compliant Performance should be good. I have a 17gb table in one project. It should perform well on read and transactional writes. With mysql it took hours to restore it and there were no foreign keys on that specific table. It only finished in a workday because i found a suggestion to adjust a setting which i think was key-buffer. And it still took hours Unique columns that allow more then one row to be null. I shouldn't have to say it but dammit MS. Allows one to make ongoing backups. Something like 'binary logs'. Some relatively small amounts of data i can grab and apply it to my local db to have it in sync with the one on the server. Table joins. I rather not write a bunch of queries to simulate a join What I would like but is not required Foreign keys. This may be a requirement later Open sourced Fair tool support. So i can measure queries, easily backup/restore, etc .NET and C (or C++) interface. (I seen one that uses raw tcp with JSON which was okish) Good subquery support. Once i was working with an older version of mysql (i believe <5.1 but it could have been 5.1) and i had to write many queries to do one query because it couldn't do subqueries. Or maybe it couldnt do it efficiently and died bc of memory limitations with a huge dataset. What db system should i learn?

• Wired Connection Problem

  After upgrading to 12.04 my interent connection no longer works. More precisely it is really, really, slow, and occasionally will connect, but do so only for a few moments and then disappear again. I am on a Lenovo Workstation e20. • View the Time & Date in Chrome When Hiding Your Taskbar

  Do you prefer keeping your Taskbar hidden but still need to keep watch on what time it is? Now you can keep track of the time without the Taskbar using the Date Today extension for Google Chrome. A Look at Date Today with Different Themes This extension does one thing and does it well…it provides you with an “active icon” clock that will let you view the time and date in two fashions. The first is by hovering your mouse over the “Toolbar Clock Button”… And the second is by clicking on the “Toolbar Clock Button” to view an enlarged version. Here you can see the extension in use with five different themes to get an idea of how it might look with the theme that you are currently using. It does stand out very nicely with brighter or darker colored themes. Conclusion While this extension is obviously not for everyone it will make a nice (and useful) addition to Chrome for those who prefer keeping their Taskbar hidden. • What do I need to Mod a Unreal Engine 3 game?

  what I am looking for is some advise making a mod for a certain game and how I would go about making it. The game I am talking about is Blacklight: Retribution and what I wan't to know is; Is it possible? And if so, what programs will I need? It is an online only game so I was unsure how plausible a mod would be for it. Plus I have never made a video game before, but I do like the game and I wanted to do some things with it. Additionally, this will be my first time making anything video game related so I would appreciate any advise. To expand a bit, I plan to add something simple at first. A mod that would let you spectate another player in the first person. Then I plan do something a bit more complex where I want to make so the game optionally always records you playing (in short intervals most likely or you would run quickly out of memory). After all that is done I would add items, armor, weapons, and maybe make a map or not I am not sure but this in a shell what I hope to do. I don't know much about these things but I am reading anything I can get my hands on. So if this is overly ambitious or just plain out not a possibility any advise on what I should look to instead will be welcomed warmly. Thank you.

• Wireless keeps disabling or stays disconnected (Realtek RTL8191SEvB)

• Bootable dvd installs ubuntu in one computer but not in other...Why? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? I have 2 computers, Windows 7 Intel. On one computer Ubuntu boot-able DVD (AMD 64) works properly. But on other computer the same DVD boots OK but when clicked on "Install Ubuntu" a blank screen with blinking cursor(_) appears and it continues just blinking forever. What problem can be there in computer 2? Can it be DVD reader's problem? (Both computers have LG DVD RW) Can there be any problem in DVD? Computer 1 specs: Pentium D 3 GHz Windows 7 32-bit not a 64bit-capable processor still Ubuntu 64bit trial/installer runs... Computer 2 specs: Core i7 2700k Windows 7 32-bit nvidia gtx 560 graphicsCard ...BIG BOSS... still can't run the setup/trial/disk-check/memory-test ?!?!? Is it the problem of graphics card ?!? I also tried burning other dvd which has the same behavour.... AND yes the dvd name is: ubuntu-12.04.1-dvd-amd64.iso Any help is appreciated.

• Hosting and scaling a Facebook application in the cloud? [migrated]

  We would be building a Facebook application in Django (Python), but still not sure of where to host it economically, and with a good provision to scale in case the app gets viral. Some details about the app: Would be HTML based like a website,using django as a framework. 100K is the number of expected pageviews in a day, if the app is viral. The users will not generate any media content, only some database data will be generated by them. It would be great if someone with more experience can guide on following points: A) Hosting on Google app engine or Amazon EC2 or some other cloud like RackSpace : Preferable points found in AppEngine were ease of deployment, cost effectiveness and easy scaling. For EC2: Full hold of the virtual machine,Amazon NoSQL and RDMBS database services in case we decide to use them. B) Does backend technology affect monthly cost? eg. would CPU and memory usage difference of Django over , for example , PHP framework like CodeIgnitor really make remarkable difference in running costs. • I can't get grub menu to show up during boot

  After trying (and failing) to install better ATI drivers in 11.10, I've somehow lost my grub menu at boot time. The screen does change to the familiar purple colour, but instead of a list of boot options it's just blank solid colour, and then disappears quickly and boots into the default entry normally. How can I get the bootloader back? I've tried sudo update-grub and also various different combinations of resolutions and colour depths in startupmanager application with no success (640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200, 16 bits, 8 bits, 10 second delay, 7 second delay, 2 second delay...) edit: I have already tried holding down Shift during bootup and it does not seem to change the behaviour. I get the message "GRUB Loading" in the terminal, but then the place where the grub menu normally appears I get a solid blank magenta screen for a while. • More efficient in range checking

  I am going to use a specific example in my question, but overall it is pretty general. I use java and libgdx. I have a ship that moves through space. In space there is debris that the ship can tractor beam in and and harvest. Debris is stored in a list, and the object contains it own x and y values. So currently there is no way to to find the debris's location without first looking at the debris object. Now at any given time there can be a huge (1000+) amount of debris in space, and I figure that calculating the distance between the ship and every single piece of debris and comparing it to maximum tractor beam length is rather inefficient. I have thought of dividing space into sectors, and have each sector contain a list of every object in it. This way I could only check nearby sectors. However this essentially doubles memory for the list. (I would reference the same object so it wouldn't double overall. I am not CS major, but I doubt this would be hugely significant.) This also means anytime an object moves it has to calculate which sector it is in, again not a huge problem. I also don't know if I can use some sort of 2D MAP that uses x and y values as keys. But since I am using float locations this sounds more trouble than its worth. I am kind of new to programming games, and I imagined there would be some eloquent solution to this issue.

  I am wondering, how I should store my mesh into memory after loading it from whatever file. I have Questions floating in my head: Should a mesh could have sub meshes or does the 3d model just store a list of meshes all on the same level Is there one material assigned to one mesh 1:1? What do I have to consider, if I want to store skeletal animations? Btw it's a OpenGL|ES2 iOS game using GLKit. • Moving From IT to Embedded software Developing

  i worked for two years at a channel station, managing various Types of tasks, varying from printers installation, software solution, down to managing and maintaining server automation, to be honest, i always been enthusiastic about programming, i studied at some affordable college and finished my IT path successfully, my graduation project was in C# ADO.NET couple of years ago. Obviously it was so much of a beginner spaghetti code than a well furnished code. I also had the chance; after leaving the IT career, to study about some ASP.NET MVC and web apps development. I have rookie level of coding skills due to the poor level of education i endured, and sufficient resources. Currently i m working as a trainee in a newly opened embedded software development company, that is being said, i am, as i sound, have a little idea about the algorithms included, as i was reading for the past couple of days, embedded system development requires more strict coding skills, including memory management, CPU optimization according to its architect, and couple of other tricks regarding the display, and power management if mobile.. etc. My question is, What type of Algorithms am i supposed to use in such cases, as i mentioned before, i am really enthusiastic about learning programming skills and algorithms related to embedded systems and programming languages, including C/C++, Java, C#, and some EC++ if still operational.

• Ubuntu 12.04 Very slow especially with Android Studio

  I have an old laptop with the following specification: Memory: 485 MiB, Processor: Genuine intel CPU T2300 @ 1.66 GHz ×2, OS Type: 32 bit, Disk: 78.1 GB, I installed on it Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I noticed that the overall system is very slow in responding. I tried to search about that in the internet and I found some articles talking about how to make Ubuntu 12.04 LTS run fast I applied all what they said including download LXDE desktop environment and then nothing different in the system response time. Then I need to develop some android applications so, I download Android Studio (Beta) 0.8.6. The problem became worse than before whenever I tried to open the Android Studio the screen is frozen for some minutes then it took time to download the projects and initialize the work space also, when I tried to move the cursor he is move very slowly. When I tried to run my first application on the AVD it took three hours and still not run yet. I delete the Android Studio and install it again several times, I was trying to solve the problem but still nothing change. Please if you have any suggestions that may help me make my laptop and Android Studio work faster I will appreciate it for you. Thank you in advance.

• Can't boot from USB - 11.04 / Exopc

  I can't find the answer to this anywhere. I am new to Ubuntu, please help! I have a wetab, except now I don't, because I put Ubuntu 10.10 over the top of it (meant to dual boot, but that's another story). I upgraded to 11.04 out of curiosity. It's good, but not for touchscreen tablets - no multi touch for example. I want to get back the wetab OS now. I have all the files, and I have a bootable gparted USB stick. The problem is I can't seem to boot from USB. The "wetab" PC is actually an ExoPC, so it has only the hardware button and a soft button in the top corner. Using the wetab OS method of reaching BIOS with the hard and soft buttons doesn't work now, I only get a menu asking if I want to run Ubuntu in recovery mode, run a limited command line, or do a memory check. I need to either repartition the drive so I can dual boot with WeTabOS, or just wipe over Ubuntu and start again. How do I do this? I have also tried hammering F11, Del, F8, F1, many other combinations! Edit: I do have access to USB keyboard and mouse

• error: no such partition after 11.10 upgrade to 12.04

  -I recently upgraded my 11.10 install to 12.04 LTS and got the above error message upon reboot after a GNU GRUB version ubuntu3 display showing Ubuntu 3.2.0-23-generic pae and other kernels or memory tests to choose from. The upgrade had to be done by CD because the Update Manager did not show the 12.04 upgrade option. After selecting the default install option of upgrading 11.10 to 12.04, I was presented with a screen saying that I had not specified a swap partition. Upon selection the 'back' key, I was taken to a partition page which listed two current partitions (only Ubuntu 11.10 had been installed - no Windoz): an ext4 partition plus a small 1.8GB partition. I double clicked the small partition and selected it as the swap partition even though I wondered at the time why this even came up. I can see the two user folders under home from the file manager screen while runnning 12.04 from the CD but if I try to access either one an error message is displayed saying I do not have permission while I get a loading message in the lower right corner of the window that does not go away. I have two questions: Can I access the user folders prior to recovery via the Terminal? If so, how? How do I fix the GRUB issue?
