• Force line-buffering of stdout when piping to tee

  Usually, stdout is line-buffered. In other words, as long as your printf argument ends with a newline, you can expect the line to be printed instantly. This does not appear to hold when using a pipe to redirect to tee. I have a C++ program, a, that outputs strings, always \n-terminated, to stdout. When it is run by itself (./a), everything prints correctly and at the right time, as expected. However, if I pipe it to tee (./a | tee output.txt), it doesn't print anything until it quits, which defeats the purpose of using tee. I know that I could fix it by adding a fflush(stdout) after each printing operation in the C++ program. But is there a cleaner, easier way? Is there a command I can run, for example, that would force stdout to be line-buffered, even when using a pipe?

• x86 assembly question

  This is my assembly program which is just a function to swap *x *y. So first argument from main is address of x which is in 8(%ebp) and second one is address of y is in 12(%ebp). The program does swap x and y. I need 7 lines for doing this. can you make it 6 lines and there is a condition you can use only %eax, %ecx, and %edx 3 registers. I think about it so much, but I can't make it 6 lines. There must be a way, isn't it? • C++ How do I properly use getline for ifstream members.

  Ok so I have a problem with getline. I have a file that contains a couple strings. I created it by myself and I have each string on a seperate line. Ex. textfile.txt Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 Line 4 //Little snip of code ifstream inFile("textfile.txt"); getline(inFile, string1); When I debug the program and ask it to print out string1 it shows that "Line 1\r" is saved into string1. I understand that it's from me actually hitting enter when I created the file. This problem causes my program to have a segmentation fault. I know my code works because if I use ofstream to write the file first and then i read it in, it works. So for my quesiton, is their anyway to use the getline function without it picking up the escape sequence \r? If i am not clear just let me know.

• Changing default image viewer in registry

  I want my application to change the program which should be launched if ie. a .jpg (in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT) is launched. The *.jpg and *.jpeg items in the registry references the jpegfile-class, but when I change the value of the default application to open the file, the old default is still launched, but not my program. (I set the value in jpegfile/shell/open/command/ to the path of my application.) In firefox, the right-click menu etc the choice of default viewer will show that my application should be launched, but it isn't.

• How to synchronize threads in python?

  I have two threads in python (2.7). I start them at the beginning of my program. While they execute, my program reaches the end and exits, killing both of my threads before waiting for resolution. In my scenario, TelnetClient is a long operation which may result in a failure after a timeout.

• Why Aren't Programs Written In Assembly More Often?

  It seems to be a mainstream opinion that assembly programming takes longer and is more difficult to program in than a higher level language such as C. Therefore it seems to be recommend or assumed that it is better to write in a higher level language for these reasons and for the reason of better portability. Recently I've been writing in x86 assembly and it has dawned on me that perhaps these reasons are not really true, except perhaps portability. Perhaps it is more of a matter of familiarity and knowing how to write assembly well. I also noticed that programming in assembly is quite different than programming in an HLL. Perhaps a good and experienced assembly programmer could write programs just as easily and as quickly as an experienced C programmer writing in C. Perhaps it is because assembly programming is quite different than HLLs, and so requires different thinking, methods and ways, which makes it seem very awkward to program in for the unfamiliar, and so gives it its bad name for writing programs in. If portability isn't an issue, then really, what would C have over a good assembler such as NASM?

• How do you determine when an object is drawn on-screen in OpenGL?

  I'm extremely new to OpenGL. I'm writing a program that displays flying text on screen. I need to know when certain text string appears (drawn) onto the screen and are visible to the user. The program needs to identify which text strings are displayed. At first, I started to think that I could use OpenGL's picking mechanism, but so far I've only seen examples where the selection area is focused on some sort of user interaction. I want to know what objects are displayed on the entire window area. This leads me to think I'm on the wrong track... Am I missing something? Any suggestions are welcome.

• Why is passing a string literal into a char* arguament only sometimes a compiler error?

  I'm working in a C, and C++ program. We used to be compiling without the make-strings-writable option. But that was getting a bunch of warnings, so I turned it off. Then I got a whole bunch of errors of the form "Cannot convert const char* to char* in argmuent 3 of function foo". So, I went through and made a whole lot of changes to fix those. However, today, the program CRASHED because the literal "" was getting passed into a function that was expecting a char*, and was setting the 0th character to 0. It wasn't doing anything bad, just trying to edit a constant, and crashing. My question is, why wasn't that a compiler error? In case it matters, this was on a mac compiled with gcc-4.0.

  hi, i want to generate all the subsets of size k from a set. eg:-say i have a set of 6 elements, i have to list all the subsets in which the cardinality of elements is 3. I tried looking for solution,but those are code snippets. Its been long since I have done coding,so I find it hard to understand the code and construct a executable program around it.   Hi there, I'm studying for my final exams in my CS major on the subject distributed systems and operating systems. I'm in the need for a good definition for the terms task, process and threads. So far I'm confident that a process is the representation of running (or suspended, but initiated) program with its own memory, program counter, registers, stack, etc (process control block). Processes can run threads which share memory, so that communication via shared memory is possible in contrast to processes which have to communicate via IPC. But what's the difference between tasks and process. I often read that they're interchangable and that the term task isn't used anymore. Is that really true?

• Has anyone been successful at a assembler based led blinker for an xcore?

  I am liking the http://www.xmos.com chips but want to get a lower level understanding of what is going on. Basically assembler. I am trying to sort out something as simple as an led blinker, set the led, count to N clear the led, count to N, loop forever. Sure I can disassemble a 10 line XC program, but if you have tried that you will see there is a lot of bloat in there that is in every program, what bits are to support the compiler output and what bits are actually setting up the gpio?

• Object reference not set to an instance of an object - how to find the offending object name in the

  This is the bane of my programming existence. After deploying an application, when this error crops up, no amount of debug dump tells you WHAT object was not instantiated. I have the call stack, that's great, it tells me roughly where the object is, but is there any way to get .NET to tell me the actual name of the object? If you catch them while debugging, of course the program breaks right on the offending creature, but if it happens after the program is in the wild, good luck. There has to be a way. I've explored the exceptions returned in these instances and there is just nothing helpful.

• Have threads run indefinitely in a java application

  I am trying to program a game in which I have a Table class and each person sitting at the table is a separate thread. The game involves the people passing tokens around and then stopping when the party chime sounds. how do i program the run() method so that once I start the person threads, they do not die and are alive until the end of the game One solution that I tried was having a while (true) {} loop in the run() method but that increases my CPU utilization to around 60-70 percent. Is there a better method?

  I included a text file as output in a WCF set up project. The text file is correctly located in the same folder with the dll, exe, and config file after the project is installed (C:\Program Files\KLTesting\KLTestApp). However when the program tries to read it, it looks under "C:\Windows\system32", what's the correct way to find & read it? • gcc architecture question

  Hi, I'm compiling my program with architecture set to -mtune=i386 However, I'm also linking statically against several libs (libpng, zlib, jpeglib, vorbisfile, libogg). I've built these libs on my own using configure and make, so I guess these libs were built with architecture being set to my system's architecture which would be i686. But I don't want that! I want my program to run on i386, too, so I need to make sure that all these libs that I'm statically linking against are built for i386, too. So my question: Is there a convenient way to build libpng/zlib/jpeglib/vorbisfile/libogg etc. for i386 or do I have to modify all of their makefiles manually and make sure that -mtune is set to i386?
