• Windows 7 Desktop slideshow

  I have my windows 7 (Home Professional if it matters) set to automatically change the background every 20 minutes with the source of the slideshow as a folder in the Pictures library. Recently, the slideshow has not been functioning. The pictures do not change while the computer is on; they only seem to change when it is shut down (i.e. there is a different desktop on each boot), or about 50% of the time when waking the computer from hibernation. I've changed the time settings, the folder location on the drive, and made sure to disable all programs that tweak the desktop with no luck. Any thoughts?

• Entire folders deleted from My Documents periodically with remote logins

  I've got a customer who thinks our application is constantly deleting all it's data. It's really becoming a major problem for them. The problem is, there's no way it's us. They are losing not only our entire data folder (which we locate in the user's "My Documents" folder to make it easy to find), but some local settings files which are in entirely different places within the general user profile. It REALLY looks like the entire user is either getting reset, or is somehow synchronizing with a more... blank profile somewhere else. They're running this on some kind of virtualized Citrix guest OS. I see references to a "group policy folder redirection" that could do this... maybe roaming profiles? Any ideas? Help!

• Chrome: middle mouse button overriden on certain web pages?

  Normally when I click on a link in Chrome with a middle mouse button, the page open s in a new tab. I find it useful and would like it to always work that way. But on some sites, specifically SharePoint sites I'm often working with, middle click on certain links opens the page in the same tab. Example can be found on this publicly available SharePoint demo page when clicking on "Internet Sites" or "SharePoint resources" links with middle mouse button. Those menu items seem like a link (they definitely have URL assigned). Why do them open in the same tab instead of a new one, when middle clicked? Can this behavior be changed in Chrome's settings or using some addon?

• Mac Terminal - Color Co-ordinated

  I would like to create a couple of short cuts on my iMac which ssh on to my dev box and on to my prod box. I would like my dev connection to use the settings something similar to home-brew (green text black background) and my prod connection to use red text black background) - How can this be configured so that this is possible. Would I need multiple bashrc files one for prod and one for dev and source individually? If this is the case, how can i get the profiles to be sources as soon as i double click the shortcuts? Thanks

• CentOS running inside VMware as WebServer times out on outside connection [migrated]

  I have a CentOS machine running inside VMware, and I have got PHP and Apache set up on it, so if I open a browser (on the VM) and go to either localhost, or 192.168.0.3, I get a phpinfo page I made in /var/www/html/index.php, but, if on the host (Windows 7), in my browser I go to 192.168.0.3, it times out. I can ping the IP address from Windows and get a response, I just can't through the browser. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get this working? This is my first time using a VM and I'm getting lost in the network settings.

• Why is the word PERSONAL still relevant in the term PC? [closed]

  I have spent half an hour trying to change an icon on my Win-7-64 machine (Why Can't I Change the Icon). One reasonable suggestion (reasonable in terms of having a solution, not reasonable in terms of having to jump through these hoops for such a basic requirement) was to delete the old icon from the %userprofile% \ Local Settings..., however when I click on this folder in Windows Explorer I am told the folder is not accessible - Access Denied. Well! It's my PERSONAL computer isn't it? Isn't that what PC stands for? It's MY computer - why can't I get access to that folder? It's about time we started calling these machines MCs (Microsoft Computer), or WCs (Windows Computer) - because they sure as hell aint PERSONAL damn computers!!!!

• How do I check if a process (Firefox) has quit?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, with all updates installed. I made a simple shell script that starts a SOCKS5 tunnel and launches Firefox (with correct network proxy settings) to use the tunnel. How do I recognize when Firefox has ended (when I close it) so that I can close the tunnel? • My microphone is too quiet

  I've been chatting with skype for a long time.. and I don't know why, but for X time it's fine, and then it's too quiet.. Here how it goes : I'm booting the PC - getting into a skype call with friends - talking with friends on skype - (everything goes well) - Closing the skype call - Going back to a skype call like a hour after -. They can't hear me well, I have to shout so they'll hear me, and in the settings, it's on 100% + 30 DECIBELS, so I can't raise it higher... and if I'll re-boot my PC, it'll be well until I'll close the skype call again.. Every time I'm skyping with friends well, and then when I close the call and come back after a while, they hear me really low(volume).. I've been trying to fix this problem for about 2 months! If you'll be able to help me, I'd be so happy. (btw It's connected not through USB, but through a microphone connection and headphone connection...) Also, I got Windows 7..

• All created VPNs result in Error 720

  I have a few different VPNs I need to connect to. I'm using windows 8 and standard ptpp VPN. Every VPN I have created though results in the same error: Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established You might need to change the network settings for this connection The VPN works in Windows 7 and XP. I'm not sure if this has something to do with my new laptop or if its something with Windows 8 itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if there is any extra info I can provide please let me know. Edit: I've tried with virus scanner turned off and windows firewall turned off as well and I still receive the same error message.

• Alow Plesk access (login) only for one domain

  Hope someone is able to help me. :) I have 4 domains registered, and all of them are using the same server. That means, they have the same IP-Address. Thats okay, but at the moment it is possible to access the plesk using ":8443" with all domains. But I would like to permit access to plesk only for 1 domain! That means, if enter: "https:// domainexample1:8443" it should allow the access to plesk. If I enter: "https:// domainexample2:8443" it should forbid. How can I configure this, or change the settings? Thanks in advance! :) Best regards

• Possible to run system-config-network during %post kickstart?

  Hello, I'm currently trying to figure out a smart way to set IP, hostname, gateway and DNS settings during a kickstart (with user input during the kickstart). Doing this with firstboot after the install is not acceptable, so this must be done during %post. I've tried to run the system-config-network tool during post in tty6: #!/bin/sh chvt 6 exec < /dev/tty6 > /dev/tty6 /usr/bin/system-config-network-tui This doesn't work since for some reason I'm unable to catch user input. I would prefer to use built in tools to change this during post, rather than write my own bash script to do this, since using the provided tools is less likely to break anything. Does someone done anything like this or similar, and made it work? Thanks

• What are the reasons why outlook looses configurations?

  Can't seem to establish any logic why outlook suddenly looses its profile coniguration settings intermittently. I work for an IT Contact Centre but it hurts when someone asks me why they loose their outlook profiles suddenly, and some most of the time. I know there are lots of reasons but I'm not sure which ones are the best. Could it be that the PC in a hurge corporate organization will not be connected to the network properly so the profile gets corrupted for outlook? But they don't usually shut down the PC after office hours due to the fact that its a 24 hours operations. On top of that, when users are migrated to Windows 7 / Office 2010 and then logs on to this pc, then opens outlook, then logs off then goes back to a Windows XP PC and opens outlook 2003 the profile is again lost. Again why is this? Is there anyone out there whose facing same connection/outlook profile issues getting lost for no apparent reason?

• Remotely Schedule and Stream Recorded TV in Windows 7 Media Center

  Have you ever been away from home and suddenly realized you forgot to record your favorite program? Now Windows 7 Media Center, users can schedule recordings remotely from their phones or mobile devices with Remote Potato. How it Works Remote Potato installs server software on the host computer running Windows 7 Media Center. Once the software is installed, we’ll need to do some port forwarding on the router and setup an optional dynamic DNS address. When setup is completed, we will access the application through a web based interface. Silverlight is required for Streaming recorded TV, but scheduling recordings can be done through an HTML interface. Installing Remote Potato Download and install Remote Potato on the Media Center PC. (See download link below) If you plan to stream any Recorded TV, you’ll also want to install the streaming pack located on the same page. It isn’t required to stream all shows, only shows that require the AC3 audio codec. Click Yes to allow Remote Potato to add rules to the Windows Firewall for remote access. You’ll likely need to accept a few UAC prompts. When notified that the rules were added, click OK. Remote Potato will then prompt you to allow administrator privileges to reserve a URL for it’s web server. Click Yes. Remote Potato server will start. Click on the configuration button at the right to to reveal the settings tabs.   One the General tab, you’ll have the option to run Remote Potato on startup and minimized in the System Tray. If you’re running Media Center on a dedicated HTPC, you’ll probably want to enable both startup options. Forwarding Ports on Your Router You’ll need to forward a couple ports on your router. By default, these will be ports 9080 and 9081. In this example we’re using a Linksys WRT54GL router, however, the steps for port forwarding will vary from router to router. On the Linksys configuration page, click on the Applications & Gaming Tab, and then the Port Range Forward tab. Under Application, type in a name of your choosing. In both the Start and End boxes, type the port number 9080. Enter the local IP address of your Media Center computer in the IP address column. Click the check box under Enable. Repeat the process on the next line, but this time use port 9081. When finished, click the Save Settings button. Note: It’s highly recommended that you configure the home computer running Media Center & Remote Potato with a static IP address.   Find your IP Address You’ll need to find the IP address assigned to your router from your ISP. There are many ways to do this but a quick and easy way is to visit a site like checkip.dyndns.org (link available below) The current external IP address of your router will be displayed in the browser.   Dynamic DNS This is an optional step, but  it’s highly recommended. Many routers, such as the Linksys WRT54GL we are using, support Dynamic DNS (DDNS). What Dynamic DNS allows you to do is affiliate your home router’s external IP address to a domain name. Every time your home router is assigned a a new IP address by your ISP, the domain name is updated to point to your new IP address. Remote Potato’s user interface is accessed over the Internet is by connecting to your router’s IP address followed by a colon and the port number. (Ex: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:9080) Instead of constantly having to look up and remember an IP address, you can use DDNS along with a 3rd party provider like DynDNS.com, to sign up for a free domain name and configure it to be updated each time your router is assigned a new IP address. Go to the DynDNS.com website (See link at the end of the article) and sign up for a free Domain name. You’ll need to register and confirm by email.   Once you’ve signed in and selected your domain name click Activate Services. You’ll get a confirmation message that your domain name has been activated.    On the Linksys WRT54GL click on the Setup tab an then DDNS. Select DynDNS.org, or TZO.com if you prefer to use their service, from the drop down list.   With DynDNS, you’ll need to fill in your username and password you signed up with at the DynDNS website and the hostname you chose. Note: You can connect over your local network with the IP Address of the computer running Remote Potato followed by a colon and the port number. Ex: 192.168.1.2:9080 Logging in Remote Potato and Recording a Show Once you connect, you’ll see the start page. To view the TV listings, click on TV Guide. You’ll then see your guide listings. There are a few ways to navigate the listings. At the top left, you can click on any of the preset time buttons to jump to  the listings at that time of the day.  Click on the arrows to the right and left of the day and date at the top center to proceed to the previous or next day. Or, jump to a specific day with the date and date buttons at the top right.   To setup a recording, click on a program.   You can choose to record the individual show or the entire series by clicking on Record Show or Record Series.   Remote Potato on Mobile Devices Perhaps the coolest feature of Remote Potato is the ability to schedule recording from your phone or mobile device. Note: For any devices or computers without Silverlight, you will be prompted to view the HTML page. Select Browse Listings. Select your program to record. In the Program Details, select Record Show to record the single episode or Record Series to record all instances of the series. You will then see a red dot on the program listing to indicate that the show is scheduled for recording.   Streaming Recorded TV Click on Recorded TV from the home screen to access your previously recorded TV programs. Click on the selection you wish to stream. Click on Play. If you receive this error message, you’ll need to install the streaming pack for Remote Potato. This is found on the same download page as installation files. (See link below) The Begin from slider allows you to start playback from the start (by default) or a different time of the program by moving the slider. The Quality (bitrate) setting  allows you to choose the quality of the playback. We found the video quality on the Normal setting to be pretty lousy, and Low was just pointless. High was the best overall viewing experience as it provided smooth quality video playback. We experienced significant stuttering during playback using the Ultra High setting.   Click Start when you are ready to begin. When playback begins you’ll see a slider at the top right.   Move the slider left or right to increase or decrease the size of the video. There’s also a button to switch to full screen.   Media Center users who travel frequently or are always on the go will likely find Remote Potato to be a blessing. Since being released earlier this year, updates for Remote Potato have come fast and furious. The latest beta release includes support for streaming music and photos.   I'm experiencing some problems when trying to connect my PC to the router through a switch. When the PC is directly connected to the router, everything works fine, Ubuntu (14.04) starts normally, and the Internet connection runs inmediately. • LLBLGen Pro v3.0 with Entity Framework v4.0 (12m video)

  Today I recorded a video in which I illustrate some of the database-first functionality available in LLBLGen Pro v3.0. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 also supports model-first functionality, which I hope to illustrate in an upcoming video. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 is currently in beta and is scheduled to RTM some time in May 2010. It supports the following frameworks out of the box, with more scheduled to follow in the coming year: LLBLGen Pro RTL (our own o/r mapper framework), Linq to Sql, NHibernate and Entity Framework (v1 and v4). The video I linked to below illustrates the creation of an entity model for Entity Framework v4, by reverse engineering the SQL Server 2008 example database 'AdventureWorks'. The following topics (among others) are included in the video: Abbreviation support (example: convert 'Qty' into 'Quantity' during name construction) Flexible, framework specific settings Attribute definitions for various elements (so no requirement for buddy-classes or messing with generated code or templates) Retrieval of relational model data from a database Reverse engineering of tables into entities, automatically placed in groups Auto-creation of inheritance hierarchies Refactoring of entity fields into Value Type Definitions (DDD) Mapping a Typed view onto a stored procedure resultset Creation of a Typed list (definition of a query with a projection) on a set of related entities Validation and correction of found inconsistencies and errors Generating code using one of the pre-defined presets Illustration of the code in vs.net 2010 It also gives a good overview of what it takes with LLBLGen Pro v3.0 to start from a new project, point it to a database, get an entity model, perform tweaks and validation and generate code which is ready to run. • SQL SERVER – Find Max Worker Count using DMV – 32 Bit and 64 Bit

  During several recent training courses, I found it very interesting that Worker Thread is not quite known to everyone despite the fact that it is a very important feature. At some point in the discussion, one of the attendees mentioned that we can double the Worker Thread if we double the CPU (add the same number of CPU that we have on current system). The same discussion has triggered this quick article. Here is the DMV which can be used to find out Max Worker Count SELECT max_workers_count FROM sys.dm_os_sys_info Let us run the above query on my system and find the results. As my system is 32 bit and I have two CPU, the Max Worker Count is displayed as 512. To address the previous discussion, adding more CPU does not necessarily double the Worker Count. In fact, the logic behind this simple principle is as follows: For x86 (32-bit) upto 4 logical processors  max worker threads = 256 For x86 (32-bit) more than 4 logical processors  max worker threads = 256 + ((# Procs – 4) * 8) For x64 (64-bit) upto 4 logical processors  max worker threads = 512 For x64 (64-bit) more than 4 logical processors  max worker threads = 512+ ((# Procs – 4) * 8) In addition to this, you can configure the Max Worker Thread by using SSMS. Go to Server Node >> Right Click and Select Property >> Select Process and modify setting under Worker Threads. According to Book On Line, the default Worker Thread settings are appropriate for most of the systems. • Downloading a file over HTTP the SSIS way

  This post shows you how to download files from a web site whilst really making the most of the SSIS objects that are available. There is no task to do this, so we have to use the Script Task and some simple VB.NET or C# (if you have SQL Server 2008) code. Very often I see suggestions about how to use the .NET class System.Net.WebClient and of course this works, you can code pretty much anything you like in .NET. Here I’d just like to raise the profile of an alternative. This approach uses the HTTP Connection Manager, one of the stock connection managers, so you can use configurations and property expressions in the same way you would for all other connections. Settings like the security details that you would want to make configurable already are, but if you take the .NET route you have to write quite a lot of code to manage those values via package variables. Using the connection manager we get all of that flexibility for free. The screenshot below illustrate some of the options we have. Using the HttpClientConnection class makes for much simpler code as well. I have demonstrated two methods, DownloadFile which just downloads a file to disk, and DownloadData which downloads the file and retains it in memory. In each case we show a message box to note the completion of the download. I just installed Raring Ringtail on this dell latitude D630 and I can't get it to connect without a wifi dongle. • Flash in browsers does not play sound accurately using Pulse network audio

  I use PulseAudio to send sound over the LAN to an audio server. When playing any Flash media in Firefox or Chrome, the sound flutters, as if the volume were going up and down every second. The problem does not exhibit with any other software, and I think it's specific to how Flash interacts with my sound set up. How do I get Flash to play nice with the PulseAudio network sound server? Update I have discovered that I can stop the sound fluttering if I follow these steps: Start a Flash video Run pulseaudio --kill on the server Wait about 7 seconds After this, the PulseAudio server automatically respawns, and the sound in the Flash video is perfect. The problem now, though, is that I have to do this every time I start a Flash video. This is obviously not desireable. So, the question is, how do I make whatever it is that makes the sound work when I go through these steps stick so that I don't have to do them? Also, I've uploaded some PulseAudio log output to Pastebin, taken while attempting to play a Flash video, if that helps. I've tried to get logging details from Flash, but despite installing and enabling Flash for debugging, it has not generated any ouput at all. Details I have uploaded an example video of the problem onto Youtube. In the video you can see the opening of a Ted Talk video, and the sound flutters as it plays. • No Preview Images in File Open Dialogs on Windows 7

  I’ve been updating some file uploader code in my photoalbum today and while I was working with the uploader I noticed that the File Open dialog using Silverlight that handles the file selections didn’t allow me to ever see an image preview for image files. It sure would be nice if I could preview the images I’m about to upload before selecting them from a list. Here’s what my list looked like: This is the Medium Icon view, but regardless of the views available including Content view only icons are showing up. Silverlight uses the standard Windows File Open Dialog so it uses all the same settings that apply to Explorer when displaying content. It turns out that the Customization options in particular are the problem here. Specifically the Always show icons, never thumbnails option: I had this option checked initially, because it’s one of the defenses against runaway random Explorer views that never stay set at my preferences. Alas, while this setting affects Explorer views apparently it also affects all dialog based views in the same way. Unchecking the option above brings back full thumbnailing for all content and icon views. Here’s the same Medium Icon view after turning the option off: which obviously works a whole lot better for selection of images. The bummer of this is that it’s not controllable at the dialog level – at least not in Silverlight. Dialogs obviously have different requirements than what you see in Explorer so the global configuration is a bit extreme especially when there are no overrides on the dialog interface. Certainly for Silverlight the ability to have previews is a key feature for many applications since it will be dealing with lots of media content most likely. Hope this helps somebody out.
