• Windows service only gets called when Visual Studio is attached to process

  I've created a simple windows service in C# using Visual Studio 2010. It uses a TcpListener and socket to listen for messages on a given port. This worked absolutely perfectly when my laptop had Windows Vista on it. However, since upgrading to Windows 7 and re-installing my service it only responds if I'm attached to the process and debugging in Visual Studio 2010 - at which time it behaves as expected. I've tried running the service under my (administrator) credentials and setting the exe to run as administrator. I've also checked "Allow service to interact with desktop" when it was running under the Local System account. I'm testing using both a test console app and an Adobe Air application - both with the same results. Are there some specific permissions that I need to allow the service to be called?

• Pin WPF window on the desktop in Windows 7

  I want to pin a WPF window on the desktop (it should be a desktop gadget). I know you can do this by setting the parent handle of the WPF window to the handle of the "progman" window. But this does not prevent the hiding of the WPF window when "Windows + D" is pressed. There must be another way do to this. The new desktop gadgets in Windows 7 are not hidden when "Windows + D" is pressed. How did the MS developers achieve this?

• View OS X Desktop on windows remotely at higher resolution then hosting machine

  I have a new macbook air 11, which I do some web based programming on, I have a windows box with a 1920x1200 display which I'd like to use to view the mac desktop and keep working at home when I can - taking advantage of the higher resolution screen and full sized keyboard/mouse. I don't think VNC or such is the answer I'm looking for as it would restrict the display to the airs 1366x768 - negating the main benefit more lines of text on screen. From some rudimentary googleing I think I'm after some sort of x-windows / x-11 remote display. But I'm not a Linux user and any discussion seems to be about linux os x or windows Linux setups. Can anyone provide a clear set of instructions on how to do this or an application that can do this.

• Detecting metadata-only read requests in windows filesystem

  Hello, I'm developing a kind of filesystem driver. All of read requests that windows makes to my filesystem goes by the driver implementation. I would like to distinguish between "normal" read requests and those who want to get only the metadata from the file. ( Windows reads first 4K of the file and then stop reading ). Does Windows mark this metadata reads in some way? It would be very useful in order to treat that two kind of operations in a different way. In a typical CreateFile call, we have AccessMode, ShareMode, CreationDisposition and FlagsAndAttributes parameters ( being DWORD ), i'm not sure if it's possible to extract some clue of the operation requested.   I'm trying to accomplish the following ridiculous task: I have a text file containing a set of fully qualified filesnames. I want to iterate through the file and append each line to a common variable, that can be passed to a command line tool. For example, the file might be: C:\dir\test.txt C:\WINDOWS\test2.txt C:\text3.txt and I'd like to assign them to some variable 'a' such that: a = "C:\dir\test.txt C:\WINDOWS\test2.txt C:\text2.txt" A secondary question is - what is a good batch file reference? I'm finding some stuff in the Windows material, and a lot of home-grown websites, but nothing particularly complete. Thanks!

• .NET applications sometimes doesn’t work on Windows CE

  Hi, I write applications for Windowe ME and CE in C# .NET 2.0. Sometimes I’ve got problems because applications don’t work on some navigation devices. On Windowe ME it is not problem because .NET can be installed from a cab, but on most Windows CE devices it is impossible because after soft reset all changes disappear. I found out that in most difficult cases good solution is to put all dll-s belonging to .NET installation cab in the folder where the application runs and everything work well. However there are some devices for example Navroad NR460 (Windows CE 5.0) on which none of .NET applications work (it is funny because previous and next version of that navigation works well). I didn’t found on this device cgacutil.exe program. Is this possible to force the device to run any .NET application without installing the Windows again? What should I try to do to check if running .NET a applications is possible? What conditions should be fulfilled to run easiest application written even in .NET 1.0

  I have a PC running 64 bit Windows Server 2003. There is a java application which uses cmd file as a launcher. The launcher does this SET JAVA_HOME= C:\Progra~1\Java "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java" [java program execution line] Java is installed in C:\Program Files\Java. Since it is a x64 windows it also has C:\Program Files (x86)\ folder. Now the actual problem is that from time to time this application fails to start because it fails to find java. So the question is what windows does to resolve such ambiguity? Based on what it makes decisions about which folder to choose?

• Windows 7 application issue - only appears in taskbar

  I have an issue where a program that runs fine under windows xp has stopped working with windows 7. The application appears to start fine then disappears with only the taskbar icon remaining. If you hover over the taskbar icon you can see the application and it kind of looks correct but selecting it does nothing. I cannot seem to get the application to actually appear. Has anyone experienced anything like this and is aware of any possible solutions? Recent builds have worked with windows 7 in the past and I don't believe any significant changes were made before this issue arrived. Thanks

  We have two Server 2008 R2 servers running DFS-R (named dfs01 and dfs02) in a 2008 R2 Domain. Today I found the files in server dfs01 can not be replicated to dfs02. So I used the command dfsrdiag backlog /rgname:<group> /rfname:<folder> /sendingmember:dfs01/receivingmember:dfs02 to check the backlog. After executing the command, I get the following error: Failed to execute GetVersionVector Method. Err: -2147217406 <0x80041002 operation Failed. How can I resolve this?

• Should I switch my server to Ubuntu Server from Windows Server 2003

  I have a server thats primarily used for SRCDS, I host a few Team Fortress 2 servers on it and I would much prefer a ssh-like (more so the no-gui part) for something like this, mostly because I can't navigate with my phone on VNC very well and also because there really is no need for a gui in this situation. I sort of want to make the switch but I am unsure, because my server 2003 is very fast and If I do need to reboot, it can reboot in under 30 seconds to desktop. Should I switch?

  I upgraded my computer from Vista Home Premium x64 to 7 x64. I was able to use the solitaire application for about 24 hours but since then it freezes when it tries to load. Specifically the program freezes with the title "Solitaire - Loading Resources... (Not Responding)". Any suggestions?

  Hi. I have a problem with uninstalling Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended Beta 2. I wanted to uninstall it but I cancelled the process. Then I was asked if there was a problem without uninstallation if I want to change to compatibility mode. I accidentally chose to change to compatibility mode. Since then, every time I try to uninstall it, I get an error that the installer cannot run in compatibility mode. How can I fix it? I look for installer file and it's not marked to run in compatibility mode. I cannot find the file that was marked to run in compatibility mode after answering mentioned question. • Pairing Sony bluetooth headphones with my PC, under Windows 7

  Hi there, I have the Sony DR-BT50 wireless headphones. I've been able to successfully pair them to my iPhone and play music through them, but no such luck with my PC. I can add it to the bluetooth devices, but when the "Driver Software Installation" screen comes up, I get a red X and "No driver found". Any ideas how to fix this? (I have a bluetooth keyboard & mouse paired successfully, so it's not a problem with my laptop's bluetooth.)

• Windows Server 2012 IPAM feature - "Unblock IPAM Access" error/recomended action

  So, I'm in the process of setting up an IP Address Management server, using the built-in IPAM feature in Server 2012, and have run into a problem that I'm hoping someone else has successfully solved. Following the technet guide here, I've installed and configured IPAM, and have provisioned it via GPO. After verifying that the PowerShell invoke-ipamgpoprovisioning command is successful, managing the desired servers in IPAM, running gpupdate /force on the servers and refreshing my view in IPAM, I'm still getting the less-than-useful recommended action of "Unblock IPAM Access" for all servers. (First done 3 hours ago, so it's not a give-it-time-to-propagate issue.) Can't, for the life of me, seem to figure out what's causing this, find anything useful in the logs, or find much about this on Google or in the help files, so I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas about how to fix this, or even where to start looking. I'd really like to get this working, because if not, I have to resume work on creating an Excel spreadsheet for IP address management.

This is annoying when windows answers the phone before I even hear an audible ring and the hapless caller is saying, "hello. hello" on top of music I have playing. Does anyone know how to tell Windows not to answer the call? I want to be able to don my headset, switch audio to my headset, THEN manually answer the call.

• Laravel Forge SSH on windows not recognized

  I decided to try out the Laravel Forge, but I'm having trouble with the SSH keys. I use digitalocean.com for the VMs and have used SSH keys with success many times before. However when I paste my public key into Forge (which adds it to the server) I'm not able to connect to it. I use Putty and I get the following error: Disconnected: No supported authentication methods available (server sent: publickey) Key was generated using puttygen and was added to pageant. I have tried using the very same key files as my other VM and tried creating a new one, but all without luck. I'm hoping someone can help me out here.   Does anyone know if XAMPP's Perl also provides Tk support? Does anyone know of a similar stack which provides PostresSQL in addition to/instead of MySQL? I'd like this to run on Win 7 and XP. Edit: I do know I could install the other components I want "by hand", for example getting Tk from CPAN, I'd just prefer to get everything at one time if possible.

  I originally tried to rejoin a computer to a network which led to a "cannot find domain" error. The username/password box don't even come up. some tests i ran: I can ping the server, however I can't ping the domain name domain1.local. nslookup can't find the domain either. It looks to the isp's dns instead of my own to resolve the local machines. So i go to the dns and run netdiag.exe and gives me this error.
