  There is a new version of jtreg available. The primary new feature is support for tests that have been written for use with TestNG, the popular open source testing framework. TestNG is supported by a variety of tools and plugins, which means that it is now possible to develop tests for OpenJDK using those tools, while still retaining the ability to have the tests be part of the OpenJDK test suite, and run with a single test harness, jtreg. jtreg can be downloaded from the OpenJDK jtreg page: http://openjdk.java.net/jtreg. TestNG support jtreg supports both single TestNG tests, which can be freely intermixed with other types of jtreg tests, and groups of TestNG tests. A single TestNG test class can be compiled and run by providing a test description using the new action tag: @run testng classname The test will be executed by using org.testng.TestNG. No main method is required. A group of TestNG tests organized in a standard package hierarchy can also be compiled and run by jtreg. Any such group must be identified by specifying the root directory of the package hierarchy. You can either do this in the top level TEST.ROOT file, or in a TEST.properties file in any subdirectory enclosing the group of tests. In either case, add a line to the file of the form: TestNG.dirs = dir ... Directories beginning with '/' are evaluated relative to the root directory of the test suite; otherwise they are evaluated relative to the directory containing the declaring file. In particular, note that you can simply use "TestNG.dirs = ." in a TEST.properties file in the root directory of the test group's package hierarchy. No additional test descriptions are necessary, but test descriptions containing information tags, such as @bug, @summary, etc are permitted. All the Java source files in the group will be compiled if necessary, before any of the tests in the group are run. The selected tests within the group will be run, one at a time, using org.testng.TestNG. Library classes The specification for the @library tag has been extended so that any paths beginning with '/' will be evaluated relative to the root directory of the test suite. In addition, some bugs have been fixed that prevented sharing the compiled versions of library classes between tests in different directories. Note: This has uncovered some issues in tests that use a combination of @build and @library tags, such that some tests may fail unexpectedly with ClassNotFoundException. The workaround for now is to ensure that library classes are listed before the test classes in any @build tags. To specify one or more library directories for a group of TestNG tests, add a line of the following form to the TEST.properties file in the root directory of the group's package hierarchy: lib.dirs = dir ... As before, directories beginning with '/' are evaluated relative to the root directory of the test suite; otherwise they are evaluated relative to the directory containing the declaring file. The libraries will be available to all classes in the group; you cannot specify different libraries for different tests within the group. Coming soon ... • Nexus 7 Possibly Bricked

  I have a 1st gen Nexus 7 (32GB). I used the steps at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nexus7/Installation to successfully install Ubuntu 13.04 desktop onto the tablet. It was working fine and then I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu Touch. I booted the tablet into fast boot mode but the commands 'adb devices' and 'sudo fastboot devices' would not see the device. I am performing these steps from an Ubuntu 12.04 desktop PC. Prior to installing 13.04 the device was seen fine. I made the mistake of performing the 'Device factory reset' step from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install - Step 2. Now when I try to boot the device I get the following: mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /dev on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory Targe filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg. BusyBox v1.20.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.20.0-0ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) Enter help for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) I have searched the web but every reference to this problem is from people who still have ADB access to the device so they can recover by flashing the tablet again. I can attach a keyboard to the USB port and access the BusyBox console but I don't know what steps to do to recover from my error. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

• Search in Projects API

  Today I got some help from Jaroslav Havlin, the creator of the new "Search in Projects API". Below are the steps to create a search provider that finds recently modified files, via a new tab in the "Find in Projects" dialog: Here's how to get to the above result. Create a new NetBeans module project named "RecentlyModifiedFilesSearch". Then set dependencies on these libraries: Search in Projects API Lookup API Utilities API Dialogs API Datasystems API File System API Nodes API Create and register an implementation of "SearchProvider". This class tells the application the name of the provider and how it can be used. It should be registered via the @ServiceProvider annotation.Methods to implement: Method createPresenter creates a new object that is added to the "Find in Projects" dialog when it is opened. Method isReplaceSupported should return true if this provider support replacing, not only searching. If you want to disable the search provider (e.g., there aren't required external tools available in the OS), return false from isEnabled. Method getTitle returns a string that will be shown in the tab in the "Find in Projects" dialog. It can be localizable. You can use NotificationLineSupport passed as its argument to set a display error, warning, or info message. Method composeSearch is used to apply the settings and prepare a search task. It returns a SearchComposition object, as shown below. Please note that the example uses ComponentUtils.adjustComboForFileName (and similar methods), that modifies a JComboBox component to act as a combo box for selection of file name pattern. These methods were designed to make working with components created in a GUI Builder comfortable. Remember to call fireChange whenever the value of any criteria changes. This is a composition of various search parameters, the actual search algorithm, and the displayer that presents the results.Methods to implement: The most important method here is start, which performs the actual search. In this case, SearchInfo and SearchScopeOptions objects are used for traversing. These objects were provided by controllers of GUI components (in the presenter). When something interesting is found, it should be displayed (with SearchResultsDisplayer.addMatchingObject). Method getSearchResultsDisplayer should return the displayer associated with this composition. The displayer can be created by subclassing SearchResultsDisplayer class or simply by using the SearchResultsDisplayer.createDefault. Then you only need a helper object that can create nodes for found objects. This trend necessitates a total security picture with different layers and end-point controls. It used to be just about keeping people out. Now, you have to let people in. Most organizations are looking toward multifaceted authentication—beyond the password—by using biometrics, soft tokens, and so forth to do this securely. Corporate IT strategies have evolved beyond just identity and access management to encompass a layered security approach that extends from the end point to the data center. It involves multiple technologies and touch points and coordination, with different layers of security from the internals of the database to the edge of the network." • Update Since Microsoft/PSC Office Open XML Case Study

  In 2009 Microsoft released a case study about a project that we had done using the OOXML SDK 1.0 for Research Directors Inc.  Since that time Microsoft has released version 2.0 of the SDK and PSC has done significant development with it.  Below are some of the mile stones we have reached since the original case study. At the time of the original case study two report types had been automated to output as PowerPoint presentations.  Now that the all the main products have been delivered we have added three reports with Word document outputs and five more reports with PowerPoint outputs. One improvement we made over the original application was to create a PowerPoint Add-In which allows the users to tag a slide.  These tags along with the strongly typed SDK 2.0 allows for the code to use LINQ to easily search for slides in the template files.  This allows for a more flexible architecture base on assembling a presentation from copied slide extracted from the template. The new library we created also enabled us to create two new Word based reports in two weeks.  The library we created abstracts the generation of the documents from the business logic and the data retrieval.  The key to this is the mark up.  Content Controls are a good method for identifying sections of a template to be modified or replaced.  Join this with the concept of all data being generically either scalar or two dimensional and the code becomes more generic.   An advantage of SharePoint 2010 over SharePoint 2007 is, we can programatically change the URL of System Application Pages. For Example, It was not very easy to change the URL of AccessDenied.aspx page in SharePoint 2007 but in SharePoint 2010 we can easily change the URL with just few lines of code. For this purpose we have two methods available: GetMappedPage UpdateMappedPage: returns true if the custom application page is successfully mapped; otherwise, false. You can override following pages. • JMX Monitoring of GlassFish Servers

  Did you ever wonder what this message in your GlassFish server.log file means? JMXStartupService has started JMXConnector on JMXService URL service:jmx:rmi://192.168.2.102:8686/jndi/rmi://192.168.2.102:8686/jmxrmi It means you can monitor any GlassFish server process, remotely or locally, using any standard Java Management Extensions (JMX) client.  Examples: jconsole or jvisualvm.   Copy the part of the log message that starts with "service:" into the Add JMX Connection dialog of jvisualvm:  or into the New Connection dialog of jconsole: (The full string is truncated in the on-screen display, but if you copied from the server.log and pasted into the form it should all be there.) The examples above are for a DAS, and your host will probably be different.   The server.log files for other GlassFish servers (instances) will have similar log entries giving the JMX connection string to use for those processes.  Look for the host and/or port to be different. Note a few things about security: Here we've assumed you are using the default admin username and password.  If you are not, just enter a valid admin username and password for your installation.  Once connected, you have normal access to all the JVM statistics and controls. You can use JMX clients that support MBeans to view the GlassFish configuration.  When you connect to the DAS, you can also change that configuration, but you can only view configuration when you connect to an instance. To use a JMX client on one system to connect to a GlassFish server running on another system, you need to enable secure admin if you have not already done so: asadmin change-admin-password (respond to the prompts) asadmin enable-secure-admin asadmin restart-domain (as prompted in the output from enable-secure-admin)

• Should I make the Cells in a Tiledmap as null when my player hits it

  I am making a Tile Based game using Libgdx. I took the idea from SuperKoalio platformer demo by Mario Zencher. When I wanted to implement Collectables in my game , I simply draw the coins using Tiled Map Editor. When my player hits that, I use to set that cell as null. Someday on this site suggested me not to do so... never use null. I agreed. What can be any other way. If I am using layer.setCell(x,y) to set the cell to any other cell... even if an transparent one .. my player seems to be stopped by an invisible object/hurdle.   Much like every other Public Sector organization, school districts in the US and Canada are under tremendous pressure to deliver consistent and modern services while operating with reduced budgets, IT personnel shortages, and staff attrition.  Electronic/remote learning and the need for immediate access to resources such as grades, calendars, curricula etc. are straining IT environments that were already burdened with meeting privacy requirements imposed by both regulators and parents/students.  One area viewed as a solution to at least some of the challenges is the use of "Cloud" in education.  Although the concept of "Cloud" is nothing new in education with many providers supplying educational material over the web, school districts defer previously-in-house-hosted services to established commercial vendors to accommodate document sharing, app hosting, and even e-mail.  Doing so, however, does not reduce an important risk, that of privacy.  As always, Cloud implementations are viewed in a skeptical manner because of the perceived reduction in sensitive data management and protection thereof, although with a careful approach and the right tooling, the benefits realized by Clouds can expand to security and privacy.   Oracle's comprehensive approach to data privacy and identity management ensures that the necessary tools are available to support regulations, operational efficiencies and strong security regardless of where the sensitive data is stored - on premise or a Cloud.  Common management tools, role-based access controls, access policy management and engineered systems provided by Oracle can be the foundational pieces on which school districts can build their Cloud implementations without having to worry about security itself. Their biggest challenge, and it is a positive one, is how to best take advantage of Oracle's DB Security and IDM functionality to reduce operational costs while enabling modern applications and data delivery to those who needs access to it. • Problem with Ogre::Camera lookAt function when target is directly below.

  I am trying to make a class which controls a camera. The getPosition function is simply forwarded to it's scene node. What I want(for now) is for the camera to simply follow the AnimatedBody overhead at the distance given(the height parameter), and look down at it. It follows the object around, but it doesn't look straight down, it's tilted quite a bit in the positive Z direction. Does anybody have any idea why it would do that? If I change this line: position.y += height_; to this: position.x += height_; or this: position.z += height_; it does exactly what I would expect. It follows the object from the side or front, and looks directly at it.

  If you've never been to Mix, you're missing out on what is arguably one of the best conferences that Microsoft does. I'm not just saying that because I work here... I felt that way before, having been to most of them. The breadth of people and disciplines make it a really exciting event that pushes it well beyond the "Redmond bubble," as I like to call it. You should go.In any case, there's an Open Source Fest happening the night before Mix starts, on Monday, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be people there representing a ton of great projects, some as enormous as Umbraco, as well as people doing SDK's, controls and other neat stuff. Best of all, you get to vote for your favorites. Unless your favorite is Orchard, because Microsoft is sponsoring that directly. Or if it's POP Forums, not because Microsoft is sponsoring it, but because that's where I work in my day job. No prizes for me! Come by and say hello. I think the app will be nearly final by then, and it's already running on MouseZoom, one of my little side projects.The quality and diversity of open source projects around the Microsoft stack just keeps getting better. Our platform is also pretty great at running stuff we don't make. This will be a pretty exciting Mix. Can't wait!

• At the Java DEMOgrounds - Oracle Java ME Embedded Enables the “Internet of Things”

  I caught up with Oracle’s Robert Barnes, Senior Director, Java Product Management, who was demonstrating a new product from Oracle’s Java Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) product portfolio, Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2, a complete client Java runtime optimized for microcontrollers and other resource-constrained devices. Oracle’s Java ME Embedded 3.2 is a Java ME runtime based on CLDC 1.1 (JSR-139) and IMP-NG (JSR-228).“What we are showing here is the Java ME Embedded 3.2 that we announced last week,” explained Barnes. “It’s the start of the 'Internet of Things,’ in which you have very very small devices that are on the edge of the network where the sensors sit. You often have a middle area called a gateway or a concentrator which is fairly middle to higher performance. On the back end you have a very high performance server. What this is showing is Java spanning all the way from the server side right down towards the type of chip that you will get at the sensor side as the network.” Barnes explained that he had two different demos running.The first, called the Solar Panel System Demo, measures the brightness of the light.  “This,” said Barnes, “is a light source demo with a Cortex M3 controlling the motor, on the end of which is a sensor which is measuring the brightness of the lamp. This is recording the data of the brightness of the lamp and as we move the lamp out of the way, we should be able using the server to turn the sensor towards the lamp so the brightness reading will go higher. This sends the message back to the server and we can look at the web server sitting on the PC underneath the desk. We can actually see the data being passed back effectively through a back office type of function within a utility environment.” The second demo, the Smart Grid Response Demo, Barnes explained, “has the same board and processor and is still using Java ME embedded with a different app on top. This is a demand response demo. What we are seeing within the managing environment is that people want to track the pricing signals of the electricity. If it’s particularly expensive at any point in time, they may turn something off. This demo sets the price of the electricity as though this is coming from the back of the server sending pricing signals to my home.” The demo had a lamp and a fan and it was tracking the price of electricity. “If I set the price of the electricity to go over 5 cents, then the device will turn off,” explained Barnes. “I can go into my settings and, in this case, change the price to 50 cents and we can wait a minus and the lamp will go off. When I change the pricing signal so that it is lower, the lamp will come back on. The key point is that the Java software we have running is the same across all the different devices; it’s a way to build applications across multiple devices using the same software. This is important because it fixes peak loading on the network and can stops blackouts.” This demo brought me back to a prior decade when Sun Microsystems first promoted  Jini technology, a version of Java that would put everything on the network and give us the smart home. Your home would be automated to tell you when you were out of milk, when to change your light bulbs, etc. You would have access to the web and the network throughout your home.It’s interesting to see how technology moves over time – from the smart home to the Internet of Things.

• Understanding the Customer Form in Release 12 from an AR Perspective!!

  Confused by the Customer Form in Release 12??  Read on, to get some insight into the evolution of this screen, and how it links in with Trading Community Architecture. Historically, the customer data model was owned by Oracle Receivables (AR).  However, as the data model changed and more complex relationships and attributes had to be tracked and monitored, the Trading Community Architecture (TCA) product was created.  All applications within the E-Business suite that require interaction with a customer integrate with TCA. Customer information is no longer stored in the individual applications but rather in a central repository/registry maintained within TCA.  It is important to understand the following entities/concepts stored in TCA: Party: A party is an entity with whom you can have a potential business relationship.  A party can be either a Person or an Organization.  The Party entity is completely independent of any business relationship; this means that a Party can exist even if you have no transactions with it.   The Party is the "umbrella" entity under which you capture all other attributes listed below. Customer: A customer is a party with whom you have an existing business relationship.  From an AR perspective, you can simplify the concepts by thinking of a Customer as a Party. This definition however does not apply to all other applications. In the Oracle Receivables Customer form, the information displayed at the Customer level is from TCA's Party information record. Customer Account (also called Account): An account contains information about how you transact business with a particular customer.  You can create multiple accounts for a customer.  When you create invoices and receipts you associate it to a particular Account of a Customer. Location: A Location is an address.  It is a point in space, typically identified by a street number, a street name, a city, a state or province, a country.  A location is independent of what it is used for - you do not associate a purpose to a location. Party Site: A Party Site is associated to a Party.  It is the location where a party is physically located.  When defining sites for a Party, only one can be an identifying address.  However, you can define other party sites associated to a party. You can define purposes/usage for Party Sites. Account Site: An Account Site is associated to a Customer Account. It is the location associated to the account you are transacting business with. You can define business purposes (also called site uses) for an Account site. • Logging errors caused by exceptions deep in the application

  What are best-practices for logging deep within an application's source? Is it bad practice to have multiple event log entries for a single error? For example, let's say that I have an ETL system whose transform step involves: a transformer, pipeline, processing algorithm, and processing engine. In brief, the transformer takes in an input file, parses out records, and sends the records through the pipeline. The pipeline aggregates the results of the processing algorithm (which could do serial or parallel processing). The processing algorithm sends each record through one or more processing engines. So, I have at least four levels: Transformer - Pipeline - Algorithm - Engine. DOS?) Thrown exceptions contain all important and useful information Logging only happens when failure to do so would cause loss of useful information at a lower level. Thoughts and concerns: I don't like having so many log entries for each error I don't want to lose important, useful data; the exceptions contain all the important but the stacktrace is typically the only thing displayed besides the message. I can log at different levels (e.g., warning, informational) The higher level classes should be completely unaware of the structure of the lower-level exceptions (which may change as the different implementations are replaced). The information available at higher levels should not be passed to the lower levels. So, to restate the main questions: What are best-practices for logging deep within an application's source? Is it bad practice to have multiple event log entries for a single error?

• How do I restore the original color scheme, icons, and theme?

  I'd like the original colour scheme, icon style of 12.04. I somehow lost the Ambiance theme (possible error or upgrade error). I re-installed 'light-themes' from the terminal and got it back. But the panel on the top that shows the options of sound, battery and wi-fi has changed and I can-not get the original setting back. In the windows, the close, minimize tools have shifted to the right instead of the original left side. I had installed MyUnity and Ubuntu Tweak but deleted them. As such, I want the original setting back. Kindly help me with the commands. I have searched for solutions; there are multiple and I need to be sure if I should follow the same. Kindly bear before marking duplicate. Discoveries: The appearance is gray and boxy as outlined here. Not sure same problem. Similar 'gray and boxy' article here. Desktop forgets theme. I have also tried the unity --reset command. It never completes. I gave it 20 minutes.

• Gnome shell not starting at login, but can start from terminal (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 recently and for some reason it broke Gnome 3. The shell doesn't start up at login. • Cannot see boot options after editing grub background

  After solving this problem I managed to get myself into truble again out of nothing by trying to change the display of the dual boot option page in Boot Customizer. I have changed the background, the fonts size (I have increased them) and font style (I have chosen UnDotum). But Boot Customizer gave me an error (I mean a message that the application was closed unexpectedly or smth). I have restarted BootCustomizer and the settings were there. When I rebooted, instead of the normal boot options list, just the background image that I had selected and nothing else. I used Boot Repair to repair grub, it says it did it successfully, but I still get the background image when I try to boot. Any ideas? (Could it be the matter that I chose UnDotum font style? That was installed in Lubuntu - but how could it be accessible in displaying boot options?) • Future Of F# At Jazoon 2011

  I was at the Jazoon 2011 in Zurich (Switzerland). It was a really cool event and it had many top notch speaker not only from the Microsoft universe. One of the most interesting talks was from Don Syme with the title: F# Today/F# Tomorrow. He did show how to use F# scripting to browse through open databases/, OData Web Services, Sharepoint, …interactively. It looked really easy with the help of F# Type Providers which is the next big language feature in a future F# version. The object returned by a Type Provider is used to access the data like in usual strongly typed object model. No guessing how the property of an object is called. Intellisense will show it just as you expect. There exists a range of Type Providers for various data sources where the schema of the stored data can somehow be dynamically extracted. Lets use e.g. a free database it would be then let data = DbProvider(http://.....); data the object which contains all data from e.g. a chemical database. It has an elements collection which contains an element which has the properties: Name, AtomicMass, Picture, …. You can browse the object returned by the Type Provider with full Intellisense because the returned object is strongly typed which makes this happen. The same can be achieved of course with code generators that use an input the schema of the input data (OData Web Service, database, Sharepoint, JSON serialized data, …) and spit out the necessary strongly typed objects as an assembly. This does work but has the downside that if the schema of your data source is huge you will quickly run against a wall with traditional code generators since the generated “deserialization” assembly could easily become several hundred MB. *** The following part contains guessing how this exactly work by asking Don two questions **** Q: Can I use Type Providers within C#? D: No. Q: F# is after all a library. I can reference the F# assemblies and use the contained Type Providers? D: F# does annotate the generated types in a special way at runtime which is not a static type that C# could use. The F# type providers seem to use a hybrid approach. At compilation time the Type Provider is instantiated with the url of your input data. The obtained schema information is used by the compiler to generate static types as usual but only for a small subset (the top level classes up to certain nesting level would make sense to me). To make this work you need to access the actual data source at compile time which could be a problem if you want to keep the actual url in a config file. Ok so this explains why it does work at all. But in the demo we did see full intellisense support down to the deepest object level. It looks like if you navigate deeper into the object hierarchy the type provider is instantiated in the background and attach to a true static type the properties determined at run time while you were typing. So this type is not really static at all. It is static if you define as a static type that its properties shows up in intellisense. But since this type information is determined while you are typing and it is not used to generate a true static type and you cannot use these “intellistatic” types from C#. Nonetheless this is a very cool language feature. With the plotting libraries you can generate expressive charts from any datasource within seconds to get quickly an overview of any structured data storage. My favorite programming language C# will not get such features in the near future there is hope. If you restrict yourself to OData sources you can use LINQPad to query any OData enabled data source with LINQ with ease. There you can query Stackoverflow with The output is also nicely rendered which makes it a very good tool to explore OData sources today.
