• What stack would you use for a new web Java project if you started today?

  If you were to start a brand new java project today with the following requirements: high scale (20k + users) you want to use something that is fairly mature (not changing dramatically) & wont be dead technology in 3 years you want something very productive (no server restarts in dev, save the code and its automatically compiled and deployed), productivity and time to market are key. some amount of ajax on front end no scripting language, jruby, groovy, php etc , has to be java has to support i8n What stack would you use & Why? (when I say stack, I mean, everything soup to nuts, so app server, mvc framework, bean framework, ORM framework, javascript framework etc...)

  I once built a very good web application in ASP (classic) back in 2001 and extensively used XmlHttpRequest object in it. (I was lucky that the clients were only using IE, and only IE supported this object at that time). Then later when people started talking about AJAX in 2005, It felt good to have used something ahead (or early) of its time. Well, maybe this does not qualify to be listed as something done ahead of its time. Which programming technology/technique/practice have you done that was ahead of this time. • Not Recieving JSON object into my Zend Controller

What am I missing?

• How can I retain carriage returns when I'm encrypting data?

  I have this following setup, a textarea named with some data in it that may have carriage returns and another textarea that has style='display:none' in order to make it hidden as follows: <textarea id="myTextarea" onBlur="encryptMyData()"></textarea> <textarea name="encryptedText" style='display:none'></textarea> the user enters data in the first textarea and when that text area loses focus the 'encryptMyData()' javascript function is calling an ajax call to take whatever the user entered in the first textfield, encrypt it using rijndael, and paste it in the encryptedText textarea so that it is stored in the database later. Now what I need to do is this, find a way to convert the carriage returns before encryption to a tag like so [cr] so that when I retrieve the data, all formatting is retained. Any idea how I do this? I'm using asp.net and c# to perform the encryption.

I followed the tips given on Loading Facebook fb:profile via ajax In my app, I am basically loading more comments posted by the user via Jquery and along with each comment showing the user's picture using the fb:profile-pic tag This is a sample of how I'm building the string via Jquery newcomment += "<fb:profile-pic uid='"+data.fb_userid+"' height='50' width='50' /"; newcomment += ""+data.user_name+": "; newcomment += ""+data.user_comment+": "; $("#morecomments").append(newcomment); So the profile-pic was not being displayed - After reading the above link, I added if ( FB.XFBML.Host.parseDomTree ) setTimeout( FB.XFBML.Host.parseDomTree, 0 ); The weird thing now is - its working in Chrome and Firefox but not in IE Cant figure out why. • Missing Master Pages when using Web Deployment Project

  I am trying to deploy an ASP.NET 3.5 Web Application to my production server and I am using the Web Deployment Project for this purpose. I have a folder named MasterPages in the root of the application which contains all the master page files. When I build this project in the release mode and deploy it on to the server I am getting the below error message: Directory 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\MasterPages' does not exist. Failed to start monitoring file changes. I am using ASP.NET AJAX and the ToolkitScriptManager is on the master pages. I have noticed that the MasterPages folder is missing from the release build. Can anyone help me with this?

• Need an ASP.NET MVC long running process with user feedback

  I've been trying to create a controller in my project for delivering what could turn out to be quite complex reports. As a result they can take a relatively long time and a progress bar would certainly help users to know that things are progressing. The report will be kicked off via an AJAX request, with the idea being that periodic JSON requests will get the status and update the progress bar. I've been experimenting with the AsyncController as that seems to be a nice way of running long processes without tying up resources, but it doesn't appear to give me any way of checking on the progress (and seems to block further JSON requests and I haven't discovered why yet). After that I've tried resorting to storing progress in a static variable on the controller and reading the status from that - but to be honest that all seems a bit hacky! All suggestions gratefully accepted!

  I'm using the IE control embedded in an application. Works as advertised. When a user opens a new browser window I intercept the NewWindow2 event and force it into a new tab. However for a certain class of windows I want to allow a popup. Most notably a few windows legacy applications that use popup windows instead of Ajax for Date or Name pickers. How can I figure out that a window was requested by JavaScript window.open(...) or with a specific size? Thx for helping.

• How to make TinyMCE work inside an UpdatePanel?

  I'm trying to do something that many people seem to have been able to do but which I am unable to implement any solution. The TinyMCE control works pretty well in an asp.net form until you enclose it with an UpdatePanel, which then breaks after postback. I have tried some fixes like the RegisterClientScriptBlock method, but am still unsuccessful, I still lose the tinyMCE control after postback. Below is a full test project (VS 2008) provided with a Control outside UpdatePanel and one inside, with a button on each to generate postback. Also in the project I have a EditorTest control which include commented code of some calls I tried, in case it gives anyone any ideas. There are many plugins that support degrading the javascript to browsers that dont have javascript enabled and techniques to support this. What are peoples thoughts on javascript support, we build applications rather than just websites and are looking to just support javascript enabled browsers as a pre-requisite assuming that most people or companies have javascript enabled. Do you find most people have javascript? do you monitor the percentage of javascript/non-javascript browsers (I guess this can be done with website stats) and what are the numbers regarding this?

  Hello, I would like to achive the same functinoanlity in the UUTextField control as Google search web site (which uses Ajax for this): as user start typing, list of suggestion searches is shown. Then more letteres you type, suggestion list changes. So imaging I have array of words: Apple Abc Aman As user types A, all thress suggesions are shown, if user type one more letter p, then Apple is suggested. How would I do something like this? Mail type of applicatins do it, when receipent name is typed in the To: edit control I guess I can use UITableView with the search, is it correct approach?

  Hey all Basically I want to replicate the page changing effect found here, at http://timvandamme.com/ But instead of using #values I want to use PHP includes, mainly because I want the site to be as uber-seo-friendly as possible... but still have this nice effect. So is there a way of doing this? I have a main index file which includes other php files in the centre using the usual 'GET' method, so my pages look like: "index.php?page=about" In my jQuery code I want to have a declaration where if I click the navigation, the content scrolls up, then once the relevant PHP file has loaded, have the content scroll back down and show the new page content (whilst also of navigated to the new page in the address bar, so if the user clicks the back button in their browser, they return to the previous page). I know how to code the scrolling bits, it's just literally the ajax loading includes / page navigation parts I'm struggling to work out :\ Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!! Thanks in advance.   hey , I'm trying to change an AJAX accordion layout on the client-side. How can I make it so that when the page loads, the selected pane is opened? At the moment, I have this: Sys.require(Sys.components.accordion, function() { $("#accordion").accordion({ HeaderCssClass: "acc_header", HeaderSelectedCssClass: "acc_selectedheader", FadeTransitions: true, requireOpenedPane: false }); }); This works. However, if I add SelectedIndex = 1, it still starts off with the top pane opened and everything else closed. I tried change the 1 to other numbers (including -1), but it doesn't make a difference. Have I missed something here? (It's placed in an updatepanel, if that makes a difference) Thanks

• How can I run a user script before any inline scripts run on a webpage?

  I want to make a greasemonkey type script for firefox that runs before the scripts on the page. Greasemonkey scripts run after scripts on the page, so that won't work. The reason I need this is because I want to edit one of the scripts on the page. Specifically, I want to delete a script that forces the page to load inside a frame since having the page inside a frame breaks F5 (Pressing F5 makes the page jump back to the front page instead of reloading the current page). Also, I don't want to load the page through a proxy with AJAX and switching to chrome/opera is not an option either. I was thinking maybe the Jetpack add-on would work but it seems to only have the same event that greasemonkey uses, DOMContentLoaded. Any ideas?

• Replace newline from MySQL TEXT field to parse w/ JSON

  Hi, "replace newline" seems to be a question asked here and there like hundred times already. But however, i haven't found any working solution for myself yet. I have a textarea that i use to save data into DB. Then using AJAX I want to get data from the DB in the backend that is in TEXT field and to pass it to frontend using JSON. But pasing JSON returns an error, as new lines from DB are not valid JSON syntax, I guess i should use \n instead... But how do i replace newlinew from DB with \n? I've tried this $t = str_replace('<br />', '\n', nl2br($t)); and this $t = preg_replace("/\r\n|\n\r|\r|\n/", "\n", $t); and using CHAR(13) and CHAR(10), and still I get an error the new line in textarea is equivalent to, i guess $t = 'text with a newline'; it gives the same error. And in notepad i clearly see that it is crlf

• How to create Server-side Progress indicator in Javascript

  Hey Guys, I want to create a section in my site, where a user has a few simple update buttons. Each of these update buttons will be going to the server, and will do a long crunching behind the scene. While the server crunches data, I want the user to have a some kind of progress indicator, like progress bar or textual percentage. I'm using jQuery as my javascript library, and CodeIgniter (PHP) as the server-side framework, if it's important... What I was thinking about is using PHP's flush() function to report progress status to jQuery, but I'm not sure that jQuery's ajax functions are reading the output before it's complete... So any advice/explanation would be useful and helpful! Thanks :)

• Confusing rails div id naming

  I have started using jQuery and rails. I have made a simple form that submits to the database and updates the page without reloading with ajax. In my jQuery functions I used $"#new_comment" for the id name (in my application.js and create.js.erb files) but on my articles/show view file, I named the div "add_comment" and it works.. I renamed it new_comment and it breaks! Can someone explain it please? I get an error: "no action responded to 1" My function in my controller is "create".

  hi guys, I'm trying to use jquery Full Calendar from http://arshaw.com/fullcalendar I searched the docs alot but I could not find how I can retrieve the current month a user is on at a certain moment. On render it is set as the current month in the title, but I cant find a way to use that info. However, if I browse for an image using the <input type="file"/> element of the form, it will only be successful in uploading an image if the image file is found in the same directory as the page.php file that the form is found in (shown below). • Accessing and binding events to an ASP.NET Grid view using Jquery

  I have an ASP page which displays a text box when it loads. It takes an input number, send it to the server through post back, and then displays some record in a grid view. After a number is input into the box, the server fetches some data from a database and add records to the grid view. It also contains a link column, whose URL is set to "#", so that the page isn't redirected when it is clicked. Now I want to bind a jquery "click" event to that link. How can I do that ? I have tried that to do myself but failed, because it is not available when the DOM is loaded (since it only contains rows when a number is input through the box), and is being modified through ASP.NET Ajax post back.
