The sample code is: <textarea rows="5" cols="60" spellcheck="false" style="font-size:12px; font-family: Verdana;"> Abc Xyz Mnp Pqr </textarea> I don't want to disable the textarea, since there are some cross-browser issues. If I point on 'y' in 'xyz' and drag it after text 'Mnp', it will be shifted as 'Mnpyz'. I want to avoid this drag and drop feature of text within the text area.

• Ideas for card deck names [closed]

  I'm creating a card game, and wish to offer players to choose from different sets of playing cards. The game logic remains the same, only the design and graphics on the cards would be different. It would feature classic French set, German/Hungarian one, and a bunch of other custom designed ones. I'm looking for some cool names to give to those sets. I thought maybe to use names of some world cities like "London set", "Paris set", "Tokyo set", but there might be something better. I know this is really open-ended question, so there might not be a definitive "correct" answer, but I hope this kind of brainstorming would be useful to anyone looking for ideas to name a set of... well, anything. I'll up-vote any good idea, no matter if I don't end up using any of those.

• Given two sets of DNA, what does it take to computationally "grow" that person from a fertilised egg and see what they become? [closed]

  My question is essentially entirely in the title, but let me add some points to prevent some "why on earth would you want to do that" sort of answers: This is more of a mind experiment than an attempt to implement real software. For fun. Don't worry about computational speed or the number of available memory bytes. Computers get faster and better all of the time. Imagine we have two data files: Mother.dna and Father.dna. What else would be required? (Bonus point for someone who tells me approx how many GB each file will be, and if the size of the files are exactly the same number of bytes for everyone alive on Earth!) There would ideally need to be a way to see what the egg becomes as it becomes a human adult. If you fancy, feel free to outline the design. I am initially thinking that there'd need to be some sort of volumetric voxel-based 3D environment for simulation purposes.

• What is the history of why bytes are eight bits?

  What where the historical forces at work, the tradeoffs to make, in deciding to use groups of eight bits as the fundamental unit ? There were machines, once upon a time, using other word sizes, but today for non-eight-bitness you must look to museum pieces, specialized chips for embedded applications, and DSPs. How did the byte evolve out of the chaos and creativity of the early days of computer design? I can imagine that fewer bits would be ineffective for handling enough data to make computing feasible, while too many would have lead to expensive hardware. Were other influences in play? Why did these forces balance out to eight bits? (BTW, if I could time travel, I'd go back to when the "byte" was declared to be 8 bits, and convince everyone to make it 12 bits, bribing them with some early 21st Century trinkets.)

  I have made some research and found that bullet, ode, newton and some others are open source physics engines that should be portable enough (but I have never tried to comile/use anyone of them on phones). I am writing my games for mobile platforms in C++, so the engine should be C or C++. I need a fast engine, since mobile platforms have limited resources. I need a free engine. A good design would be nice to have too. What engine is best suited for my task? What I really would like to hear from you is your direct experience. Documentation and support (for example, forum or an IRC channel) is a really important aspect to take into consideration.

  There are some job requirements of project management experience for a programmer, such as: the candidate has to have some experience managing a project, not necessarily with subordinates, but rather having worked on a project all the way from design down to test. I was wondering what "subordinates" mean here? if there are some books, webpages or elsewhere with both general guideline and simple practical sample projects to help one get some basics about the whole process of a project. I am particularly interested in projects for both Linux and Windows, in C, C++, Python, Java. I am considering to start by playing on my own, not eager to find a company yet. My major was not CS, so I might lack the basics.

  I have a question about Software Architecture, anyone can help me or give me some hints currently, I have a J2EE project which deploys in a server, I should a Java Standard project(J2SE) should run 24 hours x 7 days to monitor something it could not run separately, because the Java Project shared the some same classes such as Java Bean classes with the J2EE project maybe my design is not correct, can anyone suggest me what should I do? Using SOA? is this correct? my current solution is run this java project using a bash, but I dont think it is then best idea. • Shifting from XNA/C# to C++?

  For a while now, I've been working with XNA for game design and development (although only for personal use ATM.) Overall, I'm a major fan of XNA itself, and it's overall "feel." However, due to the fact that: XNA seems to have a lack of support (no Metro support, no updates since 2010, etc.) I plan to try and get a job in the game development industry, and due to C++'s dominance, being more familiar with it would be very useful XNA only supports Windows (non-Metro) and Xbox 360, while I am interested in Mac and (to a lesser extent) Linux support. I've been trying to shift over to C++ as my main language. However, I do not want to focus on learning raw DirectX/C++ at this time, so I've been looking for a higher level C++ API (something about the same level as XNA, although something a bit more low-level would be fine) with a feel similar to XNA. So, for someone switching from C#/XNA to C++, what would my best choice(s) be for API's similar to XNA, although unmanaged and running on C++?

• FxCop ... Where have you been all my life?

  I was recently introduced to microsoft's tool that analyzes managed code assemblies called FxCop. It points out possible design, localization, performance, and security improvements against a pre defined set of rules (and also accepts custom rules). At first I was unsure how to go about using it as it seems to be aimed at software developers (.exe and .dll) . Its easy to get around this with the following steps: 1)Create a new folder (i.e C:\Code Analysis) 2)Publish your web application into the new folder 3)Open FxCop and add all the dll files from the newly created bin folder  to be scrutinized. • Client-Side V.S. Server-Side Searching?

We would also like to include an advanced search ability to allow for different search options and more concentrated searches. We are having trouble deciding whether to program the search function on the Client-Side (with JavaScript) or on the Server-Side (with PHP). • How to make Facebook like button narrower than 225px?

  I'm generating a like button with Facebook's 'standard' layout for my site via https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/ . I've set its width to 200 pixels, but notice that setting it to lower than 225 pixels has no effect, and the documentation on that page indeed specifies 225px as the minimum width for the standard layout. Unfortunately I need to make it 200 pixels wide to fit my site's design. Is there any way to force it into this width? (The site's at http://gwwc2.centreforeffectivealtruism.org/ if you want to have a play with Firebug, though the like button gets generated by javascript so you'd probably have to duplicate that page and edit its source.)

• How to get experience in large scale databases?

  I have written applications that are very small scale and the code I write works fine for them. But I have often wondered how the server side code I write would scale up from 100s of queries per day to millions. Also when looking at possible jobs/projects, people are often looking for developers with experience in this sort of high traffic database design so I would at least like to be able to say, I havent gotten to work on a project that was this popular, but I at least have tried to simulate it. Are there tools or frameworks that can generate a lot of traffic or at least simulate what would happen with traffic on different orders of magnitude so I could get some practice writing optimized code for higher traffic applicaitons?

• Is executing SQL through a WebService a really bad idea?

  Typically when creating a simple tool or something that has to use a database, I go through the fairly long process of first creating a webservice that connects to a database then creating methods on this webservice that do all the type of queries I need.. methods like List<Users> GetUsers() { ... } User GetUserByID(int id) { ... } //More Get/Update/Add/Delete methods Is it terrible design to simply make the webservice as secure as I can (not quite sure the way to do something like this yet) and just make a couple methods like this SqlDataReader RunQuery(string sql) { ... } void RunNonQuery(string sql) { ... } I would sorta be like exposing my database to the internet I suppose, which sounds bad but I'm not sure. I just feel like I waste so much time running everything through this webservice, there has to be a quicker yet safe way that doesn't involve my application connecting directly to the database (the application can't connect directly to database because the database isn't open to any connections but localhost, and where the appliction resides the standard sql ports are blocked anyway) Especially when I just need to run a few simple queries

  Possible Duplicate: What is duplicate content and how can I avoid being penalized for it on my site? I have two domains pointing to the same site. I want both domains to co-exist, they share most of the same content, but they differ in design and they are aimed at different markets / rivaling communities. Is there a way to let google know that these two domains are the same site and don't cause me to get hit with a duplicate content penalty? • When is it time to start afresh instead of trying to rewrite the existing project?

  As projects grow and age and new features are introduced, there may come a time when it's probably better to start anew. Some features may require so much rewriting that it would be easier (and maybe faster) to just rewrite the whole thing from scratch. Also, then you have the opportunity to apply what you've learned from the first project and thus improve the code and design of the successor. Is there a way of recognizing when this time is? Is it just a gut feeling, or could you say that "after x years, you probably should start over", or some other rule of thumb?

  I'm hoping there's a book or something out there for me to get... If I have a class that has Collection as an instance variable, what is that method of coding called? A design pattern? If so, where can I find more information on it? As I've been working with this mentor, he's really helped me understand my programming weakness and that weakness is thinking in terms of collections or relationships between objects. • Bug? Flash of white when changing orientation on iOS Safari [migrated]

  What causes the flash of white to the right of a responsive design when changing orientation from portrait to landscape on iOS? Try it on iOS6 Safari: Websites like this don't do it: http://html5boilerplate.com But this one does: http://www.initializr.com Something to do with re-processing (CPU lag) to fit a wider screen? It doesn't happen in Chrome for iOS6... Update: I just removed all img and from my testing site, but it still happens. This seems to happen with a lot of different websites out there. Is it a bug with their code, or a Safari for iOS bug? Others are completely immune to it...
