• Bug? Flash of white when changing orientation on iOS Safari [migrated]

  What causes the flash of white to the right of a responsive design when changing orientation from portrait to landscape on iOS? Try it on iOS6 Safari: Websites like this don't do it: http://html5boilerplate.com But this one does: http://www.initializr.com Something to do with re-processing (CPU lag) to fit a wider screen? It doesn't happen in Chrome for iOS6... Update: I just removed all img and from my testing site, but it still happens. This seems to happen with a lot of different websites out there. Is it a bug with their code, or a Safari for iOS bug? Others are completely immune to it...

• Am I sending large amounts of data sensibly?

  I am about to design a video conversion service, that is scalable on the conversion side. The architecture is as follows: Webpage for video upload When done, a message gets sent out to one of several resizing servers The server locates the video, saves it on disk, and converts it to several formats and resolutions The resizing server uploads the output to a content server, and messages back that the conversion is done. Messaging is something I have covered, but right now I am transferring via FTP, and wonder if there is a better way? is there something faster, or more reliable? All the servers will be sitting in the same gigabit switch or neighboring switch, so fast transfer is expected.

• No such file but the file is there!

  I'm trying to compile a C++ file with some includes. My main file (well I didn't make it hdf5_getters includes a file which includes the file hdf5.h, also not my design but it's a downloaded library. Every time I try to compile it I get the error message that the file hdf5.h does not exist while it clearly does. I started reading on the internet and people say it can happen because it's a 32bit binary running on a 64bit architecture. But I'm running a 32bit Ubuntu so that can't be it... I'm out of ideas, if anyone can help me please :) This is the errormessage with commands: make hdf5_getters g++ -c -Wall -std=c++0x -O2 -c hdf5_getters.cc In file included from H5Cpp.h:20:0, from hdf5_getters.cc:34: H5Include.h:17:18: fatal error: hdf5.h: No such file or directory #include <hdf5.h> ^ compilation terminated. make: *** [hdf5_getters.o] Error 1

  I am planning to create an e-commerce website for users to buy products and services. In this website I want users to register and also participate in something like a browser game, where every user may receive some questions which they have to answer. For each question they successfully answered, they receive points and the number of collected points will decide on which rank they are. Edit 2 Currently I am considering using only HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL to design this e-commerce website. Together with this I was thinking about learning jQuery as it may help me, but I am not sure if I should code everything specifically by myself or just use the library to make it faster. 1) Could you tell me if those languages are sufficient enough for creating such a website described? 2) Could you tell me what kind of free software tools and frameworks are most appropriate to use when creating this e-commerce website?

• Expression Engine vs Drupal for Theming

  Ive been using Drupal for years and now with work need to learn Expression Engine. Im interested in the comparison of Drupal and Expression Engine, but purely from a theming point of view (Ive no doubt Drupal is more powerful for development). Does anyone have any insights? It seems EE does give you more control over the exact html outputted, but is this necessary? I design my graphics first and Ive always been able to make exactly what I wanted in Drupal (some theme overrides could be easier, but ive got there in the end). Thanks

• Language-independent sources on 2D collision detection [on hold]

  While making a Pong clone with a friend, we had to implement some 2D collision detection. For research purposes, my friend dug up a book called "AdvancED Game Design with Flash" by Rex Van Der Spuy. This book was clearly targeted at implementing 2D collision detection in ActionScript, and I also have some problems with how the concepts are presented, e.g. presenting one method as better than another, without explaining that decision. Can anyone recommend some good material on 2D collision detection? I'd prefer it if it kept the implementation details as language-independent as possible, e.g. by implementing the concepts in pseudo-code. Language-specific materials are not completely unwelcome though, though I'd prefer those to be in either Java, C#, F# or Python or similar languages, as those are the ones I'm most familiar with. :-) Lastly, is there perhaps widely known and used book on collision detection that most people should know about, like a 'the book on 2D collision detection'?

• Where is the gtk# widget for windows forms in mono?

  Ok, I downloaded mono to program in c#. The installation worked fine and I have mono up and running. The problem is, I can't find the toolbox that contains stuff like: Common controls containers Menus and toolbars All Windows Forms THIS IS FOR THE VISUAL DESIGN PART! I cant find them! I also can't see the window to work on. (By default its called "Form1") Im trying to get mono to look like this: http://www.mono-project.com/File:Md2.png See, the window in the middle called "MainWindow" I can't see that in mono. also, on the top right, I cant find that widget box! • Google web search shows dateCreated instead of dateModified metadata

  So today I discovered that the pages from my website are listed with an unexpected date value. I specify the schema.org properties dateCreated and dateModified for most of my content pages. I'd expect that search results show me when a page was last updated, to get a sense of the currency of the page. But it's showing the date of first publishing which may be years ago. That's a bit unsatisfying but I don't want to misuse the metadata because Google probably reads it wrong. Some search terms for you to try it out: "gitrevisiontool"; "easyxml"; "multiselecttreeview" (look for the results on dev.unclassified.de; the human- and machine-readable dates come at the end of the page) Does anybody know more about what's wrong here? Or does it work as designed? (What a stupid design that would be.)

• Introduce unit testing when codebase is already available

  I've been working on a project in Flex for three years now without unit testing. The simple reason for that is the fact that I just didn't realize the importance of unit testing when being at the beginning of studies at university. Now my attitude towards testing changed completely and therefore I want to introduce it to the existing project (about 25000LOC). In order to do it, there are two approaches to choose from: 1) Discard the existing codebase and start from scratch with TDD 2) Write the tests and try to make them pass by changing the existing code Well, I would appreciate not having to write everything from scratch but I think by doing this, the design would be much better. • Modern workflow / project architecture with PHP

  I wonder how one professional developer would design the backend-part of his application. I try to use PHP as seldom as possible and only for data serving/saving purposes. To do so, i would create a module/class for every greater part of my application, then write some single script files which are called by javascript. E.g: User clicks a "retrieve data" button javascript will call retrieveData.php retrieveData.php will create an instance of the needed class, then executes myInstance-retrieve() the data is returned to my JS by retrieveData.php However, i see some disadvantages in this practice: I will need a single scipt file for every action, (e.g retrieveData.php, saveData.php etc) I need a man-in-the-middle step: from JS to my single script, to my classes How are modern applications designed to accomplish what i need to do?

• Building an instance system.

  I am looking into how to design an instance system for the game I am working on. I have always wondered how these are created in games like World of Warcraft, where instances == dungeons/raids/etc). Areas that are separated from players other than those in your group, but have specific logic to them. Specifically how can you reuse your existing code base and not have a bunch of checks everywhere ? if (isInstance) do x; else do y; I don't know if this will make too much of a difference on any answers, but we're using a pretty classic "Object as pure aggregation" component system for our entities.

• Is the use of hashbang really a good idea? [on hold]

  I've been working on a WordPress site lately that was design with hashbang or shebang in the dynamically generated URLs. After doing some research, I noticed that there was some preference by Google in their use and how it crawled the site. However, after I ran several sitemap generators and Screaming Frog SEO Spider, I realized that the only page being crawled was the index page. So now I am questioning the use of hashbangs. What do you think? Should I attempt to remove them? Or will it even matter? And does anyone know of a easy way to remove this? The site is www.modernvintage1005.com

• Free serif font with clearly distinguishable 0 (zero) character

  I'm using gLabels to create some small pieces of paper to give away to people - Just two lines of about 15-20 characters each. One of the important parts of the design is that there are no "o" ("oh") characters, but there are "0" ("zero") characters in an all-lowercase URL. Therefore I need a non-monospaced (and very legible in print) font where "0" cannot be confused with "o" even without reference. The closest thing I've found so far is Andale Mono and Inconsolata , but they are both monospace, and as such not very easy to read in print. Alternatively, to find a font myself, is there some way to preview all fonts in the Ubuntu repositories without installing them?

  In the process of learning test-driven development, I've been introduced to dependency injection and the use of interfaces, and have started using these concepts in my own PHP code in order to make it more testable. There have been times when I've needed to test code that was doing things like calling the PHP time() function. In order to make these tests predictable, it seemed logical to create an interface to the standard PHP functions I use so that I can mock them out in my tests. Is this good software design? What are the pros and cons of doing this? I've found myself groaning at how quickly my PHP interface can stick its fingers into everything I do. Is there a better way to make code that relies on PHP-accessed state and functions more testable?

  The website(s) design is for a company active in 3 different areas. As an example lets use the following structure: www.example.com [sub1.example.com] [sub2.example.com] [sub3.example.com] sub2.example.com and sub3.example.com are ready to go live but www.example.com really isn't and send a 503 http error code. I would like to know if this situation will affect the traffic and ranking of the subdomains ready to go live? Is it preferable to wait and go live with the main domain?   Ok, the title might be a little misleading. I have a Window class that draws widgets inside itself in the constructor. The widgets are all of the same type. So I pass a list of dictionaries, which contain the parameters for each widget. This works quite nicely, but I am worried that the interface to callers is obfuscated. That is, in order to use Window, one has to study the class, construct a correct list of dictionaries, and then call the constructor with only one parameter - widgets_params. Is this good or bad design? What alternatives does the python syntax provide?
