Hi, I am learning the Opengl graphic programming at Eclipse. Can someone tell me the difference between GLUT application and SDL application, so that I can dig into either one of them? Tks.
Hello,
I know it's not really a programming question but I don't know where to ask it.
Should i use a captcha in my sign up form ?
Facebook, twitter, foursquare, gowalla etc... don't use one (or not a visible one). Is there an invisible catpcha on theses sites ?
Thank you
Hello all,
I've into a bit of a wall with a client of mine. In an office of 20 people, he is the only one who experiences broken connections to his mapped network drives. I have everyone set up with about 6 mapped drives, all pointing to the same server (no DFS), and everyone else can access them lightning fast.
The environment consists of a mix of Windows 7 and XP machines, all 32-bit. The server holding the data everyone is mapping to is running on Server 2008 R2, and is a domain controller. We recently swapped out their old 10/100 switch for a shiny new Dell PowerConnect gigabit switch. We have also replaced an old dying Sonicwall with a shiny new one. Everything is running on an ESX host except for the DC, where everyone is getting data from.
In my client's office, we have done the following:
Swapped out his computer (Win7 and XP box)
Swapped out the desktop switch in his office
Removed the desktop switch in his office
Changed out the network cable going to the wall
Ran 'net config server /autodisconnect:-1' on the server
Disabled remote differential compression on his current Win7 box
When we swapped out his network cable, everything seemed fine for about 4 days. Normally I would get a phone call a couple times per day letting me know that Outlook has crashed (there is a 9GB PST living on the server he is always connected to), or that his software he is running from his L drive has crashed. I almost thought I had this solved, but after we rebooted the DC the other night he all of a sudden couldn't stay connected to his mapped network drives for more than 10 minutes.
When I ran 'net use' from the command prompt, it listed all the network drives where were randomly in a state of 'OK', 'Disconnected', or 'Reconnecting'.
What else should I try? Maybe there is bad wiring in the wall, patch panel, or a bad port in the new switch I have in the server room?
A friend of mine, who studies game development at an university, is currently learning programming in OpenCL. What would be a simple project that teaches the most important aspects of OpenCL and can be finished within about 50 - 100 hours?
Hello,
I'm new to PHP programming and I wanted to know that is it possible to handle PHP events as we do in ASP.NET
I mean I've got a img and I want to perform some task on click event of this img.
I know how to do it in ASP.NET but please help me in context of PHP
Thanks,

I need to programatically encrypt a directory of files, like in a .zip or whatever. Preferably password protected obviously.
How can I accomplish this, and WHAT IS the BEST encryption way to do it, if applicable?
Programming language doesn't matter. I am dictioned in all syntax.
hello
i never worked with web programming and
i've been asked lately to write a web-based software to manage assets and tasks. to be used by more than 900 persons
what are the recommended modules , frameworks , libraries for this task.
and it will be highly appreciated if you guyz recommend some books and articles that might help me. thanks in advance
I'm trying to find out what a binormal is in the context of graphics programming but coming up short, I saw on a site that the binormal was being calculated as the corss between the normal and tangent (i.e. cross(normal, tangent)), is this the correct way to calculate a binormal?
Hello everyone,
I'm using the rails-settings gem, and I'm trying to understand how you add functions to ActiveRecord classes (I'm building my own library for card games), and I noticed that this gem uses one of the Meta-programming techniques to add the function to the ActiveRecord::Base class (I'm far from Meta-programming master in ruby, but I'm trying to learn it)
module RailsSettings
class Railtie < Rails::Railtie
initializer 'rails_settings.initialize', :after => :after_initialize do
Railtie.extend_active_record
end
end
class Railtie
def self.extend_active_record
ActiveRecord::Base.class_eval do
def self.has_settings
class_eval do
def settings
RailsSettings::ScopedSettings.for_thing(self)
end
scope :with_settings, :joins => "JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}')",
:select => "DISTINCT #{self.table_name}.*"
scope :with_settings_for, lambda { |var| { :joins => "JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}') AND
settings.var = '#{var}'" } }
scope :without_settings, :joins => "LEFT JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}')",
:conditions => 'settings.id IS NULL'
scope :without_settings_for, lambda { |var| { :joins => "LEFT JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}') AND
settings.var = '#{var}'",
:conditions => 'settings.id IS NULL' } }
end
end
end
end
end
end
What I don't understand is why he uses class_eval on ActiveRecord::Base, wasn't it easier if he just open the ActiveRecord::Base class and define the functions? Specially that there's nothing dynamic in the block (What I mean by dynamic is when you do class_eval or instance_eval on a string containing variables)
something like this:
module ActiveRecord
class Base
def self.has_settings
class_eval do
def settings
RailsSettings::ScopedSettings.for_thing(self)
end
scope :with_settings, :joins => "JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}')",
:select => "DISTINCT #{self.table_name}.*"
scope :with_settings_for, lambda { |var| { :joins => "JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}') AND
settings.var = '#{var}'" } }
scope :without_settings, :joins => "LEFT JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}')",
:conditions => 'settings.id IS NULL'
scope :without_settings_for, lambda { |var| { :joins => "LEFT JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}') AND
settings.var = '#{var}'",
:conditions => 'settings.id IS NULL' } }
end
end
end
end
I understand the second class_eval (before the def settings) is to define functions on the fly on every class that 'has_settings' right ? Same question here, I think he could use "def self.settings" instead of "class_eval.... def settings", no ?
For those of you who are into programming not just for the money. I would like to know which benefits you would like to have (or already have).
OK, maybe taking away the money factor will limit this question too much. I am surprised to see that most companies have a fixed set for their benefits package. Were you able to negotiate something new or just your salary? What things have you seen out there and/or value most?

Need to get the above sequence into 8,5,0,1,4,7,0,0,0,7,0,1,9,3,6,0,0,8.........
I tried re but without success, help is appreciated, thanks.
I was having problems with my USB devices for an hour last night, and I am unable to determine the root cause of the problem.
The two symptoms are:
At seemingly random times (not consistently spaced by time or caused by any detectable event) my USB devices become "detached". Windows will play the USB disconnect sound and then the reconnect sound. The devices disconnected and then reconnected.
My USB Keyboard will "stick" on one key for several seconds before processing any other keystroke made. The mouse also does not respond to clicks. I do not lose mouse movement or USB device connectivity. And after a moment of this several beeps will be emitted from the speakers.
Hardware Specs:
GFX Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 470 Superclocked 1280MB DDR5 PCIe
Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D Premium Intel X58 Socket LGA1366 MB
Processor: Intel Core i7-920 2.66Ghz 8M LGA1366 CPU
Memory: Corsair Dominator 6144MB PC12800 DDR3
Storage: Hitachi 1TB Serial ATA HD 1600MHz 7200/32MB/SATA-3G
Cooling: Corsair Hydro H50 CPU Liquid Cooler
Case: Corsair Obsidian 800D Full Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair HX1000W 1000W Modular Power Supply
Steps I have taken to narrow down the problem:
Restarted the computer. - No change
Changed USB port the Hub was connected to on the CPU. - No change
Removed all devices from USB Hub and connected directly to CPU. - No change
Used a different USB keyboard both in USB Hub and directly to CPU. - No change
Disconnected and reconnected all cables. - No change
Disassembled the Tower and determined if the USB headers were firmly connected. - No change
Checked device manager for errors. Checked all USB devices. - Nothing flagged
After an hour of frustration trying to narrow down the problem it appeared to disappear. But I am torn between it being a Mobo problem or an OS problem.
Is there anything else I can do to narrow down the problem before a reformat and then eventually exchanging the Mobo?
I updated my Fedora 16 installation to Fedora 17 on Saturday, and the update worked without reporting any errors. I carried on working on the machine in question and then switched the computer off.
Last night I went back on the computer, I switched it on and got to the log in screen. At this point I tried to type in my password but the keyboard wouldn't work. I unplugged it (it's a PS/2 keyboard) and plugged it back in. The lights flashed for a split second but the keyboard still wouldn't work. I then plugged the keybaord in to a USB to PS/2 adapter, and the keyboard still wouldn't work.
I restarted the computer and tried to access the BIOS and I was able to do so. So the keyboard doesn't seem to be faulty, it just doesn't work when Fedora boots in to the GUI interface.
I did try to boot in to the "recovery mode" of Fedora, and the keyboard works here with no problem.
As I still have access to Fedora via a terminal interface, is there anything I can do to fix the keyboard problem via the terminal without having to reinstall Fedora?
Hello people,
I have three images,and , they are not square or rectangular in shape. They are just like face of anyone.
So,basically, my images are in the size 196x196 or anything like that, but complete square or rectangle with the face in the middle and transperant background in the rest of the portion.
Now, I want to remove the transperant background too and just keep the faces.
Don't know if this is possible and mind you, this isn't a programming question.
My personal desktop, running 32-bit Windows XP SP2 (with 4GB RAM, 2.75GB addressable, swap disabled, hiberfil.sys existing and contiguous on C:\; SP3 is not installed because SP2 has been working fine and I do not want to re-qualify with SP3 just for sheer perversity) typically gets hibernated at night. For a long time this worked great, but recently the machine has had trouble entering hibernation.
Sometimes when I press my power button (configured to hibernate), the box will start the procedure for hibernating (i.e., go to the blue "Windows XP" background logo and display a message about entering hibernation), but before displaying the usual blue-on-black hibernation progress bar it will drop back to the desktop. No error messages appear, on screen or in the system log. The only record of unsuccessful hibernation attempts in the system log, which proudly proclaims that "The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service entered the running state." once per failed hibernation attempt.
The problem is almost certainly resource related: if I then close one or more applications which are running, and repeat the exact same process, the machine will hibernate perfectly. There does not appear to be a reliable high-water mark for virtual or physical memory use, below which the machine is guaranteed to hibernate; it's different every time (though typically, below about 1.1–1.4 GB memory usage seems to be where hibernate succeeds most often). Memory may not even be the relevant resource; as far as I know, it could also be handles or sockets.
This behavior is relatively recent: it has only started in the last few months; before then, I could hibernate reliably no matter what the current resource use of the system. This machine claims to have hotfix Q909095 installed, but since the symptoms of my problem match KB909095 rather well, I'm suspicious if this fix is actually working as intended.
Any ideas on how to fix this or where to start debugging?
I've been fighting with this problem for the last 3 weeks where my machine will just instantly reboot. No BSOD, and when i checked the event log all that was reported was the generic "Kernal-power" error with the detailed information pointing to a hard crash.
This is a machine that was working for 18 months before these crashes started happening. When they started happening is after I added 3 HDs in a RAID-5, upped the memory to 12gb, moved to a new house, added a SSD and added about 5 case fans.
I have thus eliminated the RAID, and determined that the SSD was not the cause (because it was still crashing even though the ssd wasn't connected).
I've run memtest several times over night with no memory problems showing up.
I've run IntelBurnTest to max out the cpu to see if it was a heat issue and at full tilt after 20 min it was only at 85C and the machine didn't crash. I also took a look at the voltages during this test, with a screenshot at the bottom of this post
I've ruled out a software issue by reinstalling windows 7 ultimate x64 a total of 5 times, but even during that the install it crashes. Happens sometime during file copying at the beginning, or during uncompressing files, or sometimes during running windows update.
The only discernible pattern i can see is that it seems to crash when hard disks might be spinning up or when they are accessed heavily from large file transfers.
My current guess is that it is probably an issue with the MB, PSU or the power coming through the outlet.
Any suggestions of what i could try to troubleshoot or what may be wrong?

Hi,
Is it possible to do Aspect Oriented Programming in Delphi? I would be interested in native support as well as third party solutions.
I don't have a specific problem I want to solve with AOP, but am simply interested in studying AOP.
Thanks, Miel Bronneberg.
This isn't a question about code, but it's programming related. We have a web app that's ready for beta testing. Has anyone noticed any difference between open beta vs. closed beta in terms of the quality or quantity of feedback the testers give or any other factors?
Hi to all,
I need in IDE for Common Lisp, but at home i use linux and emacs + slime for lisp programming, but in my university i must use MS Windows, Emacs under Windows ... pull configuration file and the other I just do not do suits. Please advise a comfortable IDE for Common lisp that would have been a version for Windows and Linux and setup and installation would not cause difficulties.
Thank you.
Wouldn't it be great if someone wrote a guide or an app which allowed you to switch instantly between OS X and Windows using Hibernate in both OS:s?
Windows 7 already has an option "Hibernate" which allows you to boot back to your OS X partition, but OS X does not exactly offer the same.
However, there are possibilities here. It seems that the recent Mac's have 3 different kinds of sleeping mode:
Sleep: Low power consumption, RAM still active.
Legacy Safe Sleep: No power consumption(?), writes RAM to disk and shuts down (is this the same as Hibernate?)
Safe Sleep: Writes RAM to disk and enters sleep mode. If battery level drops too low it goes into Hibernate (is this Hibernate the same as #2 in this list? This is the Hibernate I will be referring to int he rest of this post)
It seems that I am unable to force my MacBook Pro (Late 2011) OS X 10.7.3 into a true hibernate using either command line or apps that are supposed to do this. I believe the Mac should show that white loading bar whilst waking up if it was truly put into hibernate (which it does not).
But I can get this white bar to show by letting my battery level drop to 0% so there is obviously a system function for it (obviously, duh! :).
When Win 7 goes into hibernate it shuts down completely and you can then boot into OS X on startup. On OS X however, hibernate forces you to wake up into OS X. Can you hack this so that you're allowed to select boot partition after OS X hibernates?
Would it be possible to use the true hibernate system functionalities of Win 7 and OS X to create a kind of instant switching between the two? Imagine this on a quick SATA-3 SSD like my 180GB Intel 520.
Thanks

I'm almost ready to use Magento (which is built upon Zend Framework, which i know) and i'm looking for a good book covering setup, config, best practices, creating templates, development, etc.
Do you have any to recommend ?
I found some which look insteresting :
The Definitive Guide to Magento
Pro Magento Developer's Guide
Php Architect's Guide to E-commerce Programming With Magento
Any feedbacks on those one ?
Hi All,
I am programming C on cygwin windows. After having done a bit of C programming and getting comfortable with the language, I wanted to look under the hood and see what the compiler is doing for the code that I write.
So I wrote down a code block containing switch case statements and converted them into assembly using:
gcc -S foo.c
Here is the C source:
switch(i)
{
case 1:
{
printf("Case 1\n");
break;
}
case 2:
{ printf("Case 2\n");
break;
}
case 3:
{
printf("Case 3\n");
break;
}
case 4:
{
printf("Case 4\n");
break;
}
case 5:
{
printf("Case 5\n");
break;
}
case 6:
{
printf("Case 6\n");
break;
}
case 7:
{
printf("Case 7\n");
break;
}
case 8:
{
printf("Case 8\n");
break;
}
case 9:
{
printf("Case 9\n");
break;
}
case 10:
{
printf("Case 10\n");
break;
}
default:
{
printf("Nothing\n");
break;
}
}
Now the resultant assembly for the same is:
movl $5, -4(%ebp)
cmpl $10, -4(%ebp)
ja L13
movl -4(%ebp), %eax
sall $2, %eax
movl L14(%eax), %eax
jmp *%eax
.section .rdata,"dr"
.align 4
L14:
.long L13
.long L3
.long L4
.long L5
.long L6
.long L7
.long L8
.long L9
.long L10
.long L11
.long L12
.text
L3:
movl $LC0, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L4:
movl $LC1, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L5:
movl $LC2, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L6:
movl $LC3, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L7:
movl $LC4, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L8:
movl $LC5, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L9:
movl $LC6, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L10:
movl $LC7, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L11:
movl $LC8, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L12:
movl $LC9, (%esp)
call _printf
jmp L2
L13:
movl $LC10, (%esp)
call _printf
L2:
Now, in the assembly, the code is first checking the last case (i.e. case 10) first. This is very strange. And then it is copying 'i' into 'eax' and doing things that are beyond me.
I have heard that the compiler implements some jump table for switch..case. Is it what this code is doing? Or what is it doing and why? Because in case of less number of cases,
the code is pretty similar to that generated for if...else ladder, but when number of cases increases, this unusual-looking implementation is seen.
Thanks in advance.
I'm looking for web app frameworks and/or database administration tools, either popular and unpopular, written in any language, for any relational database.
In short, I'm looking for web accessible CRUD front-ends with minimal programming effort.
For example:
phpMyAdmin (MySQL administration tool)
Ruby on Rails (web app framework with scaffolding)
I have googled this a bit and looked at powrprof.dll and PsShutdown but I haven't found a way to do exactly what I want to do.
You know that power save option that lets Windows turn off your monitor(s) if you haven't touched the system for x amount of time?
Well, I have a PC that needs to be on most of the day (and night), and I have to watch it much of the time, so I can't have a short timeout for automatically turning off the monitor. However, once I leave it for a few hours (happens at varying times of the day), I would like to be able to issue a command that puts the computer in this mode. Not sleep mode, not hibernate mode. Monitor off, that is all.
I realize of course I could just turn the physical monitor off. That is not what I want. This Dell monitor takes forever to display a picture from a cold state. If it is turned off by the computer not sending a signal - not so bad.
Is there any way for me to do this? As mentioned, the OS can do it, so I would find it really useful if I could do it too. :)
Hi there
I'm programming against a Webservice that requires the amount of ticks (for the current time) (A single tick represents one hundred nanoseconds or one ten-millionth of a second) since 1.1.0001 (midnight).
what is the easiest way to get the amount of ticks from an NSDate Object?
thanks for your help
