• How do I implement URL rewriting in my .htaccess file?

  I'd like to do some URL rewriting (Why? See this question.) so that instead of users seeing addresses like labouseur.com/course-compilers.html they can instead see and use simply labouseur.com/course-compilers (Even better, maybe I should restructure that so that it's courses/compilers.) I'm using a Linux-based shared hosting service for my website, so I do not have administrative control of the server, but I do have control over .htaccess. The references I've read online seemed less than clear to me, so I'm looking for a little clarity and advice here. Thanks!

  I have news based website, in which primary contents include news,image albums and videos. out of these i have copy rights for images and videos are just youtube embedded videos. Coming to news my site is kind of a mashup. It gathers data from various sites and presents them in more user friendly way for quick digestion and access. My problem here is that since the news part of the site can be found from other sites, my site could suffer in search rankings. Is there any solution to this. One thing I thought of is to put disallow on all the news ariticles pages, so google does not crawl them. Will this be helpful to me. When applying to google adsense does google crawl these pages (disallow) also.

• Why does the homepage rank in exact match and not in broad anymore? [closed]

  My website was ranking on page one for "walking shoes reviews" in broad and exact. It has disappeared in the rankings for broad and yet still ranks in exact match. No indication in the Webmaster tools of anything wrong yet Google analytics shows no more activity. his occurred sometime after Panda and Penguin. Not sure which because I didn't check closely for a while, this is a fun site for me. I walk for the enjoyment and health benefits so I built this site.

• Request of some opinions about a vertical menu style and some suggestions for the site style [on hold]

  I am developing a simple mainly static website using WordPress (because maybe in the future I will add some dynamic content) for a company. The new site have to follow the structure of the old site that requires the presence of a vertical main menu in the left column that contains the link to all the statics pages in the site. • Getting a lot of '/_' errors from webmaster tools

  I'm using a WordPress site and I thought I got all the kinks out of it. For some reason Webmaster Tools is crawling my website and showing a lot of 404 errors which are from /_ like additional pages that I've never created. I just can't figure out what is creating these for Google crawlers and then displaying a 404. My robots.txt is here. My sitemap (created by the Yoast plugin) is here. I have Yoast and Jetpack plugins installed. What could be causing these links to appear

• Javascript Only Search Method [on hold]

  I need to put a search function on a website that is going to be on a CD-ROM with no access to the internet. It has 80 pages, and about 500 'items', so I'd prefer to not have to hard code 100's of 'if statements if possible. I've found a few programs you can buy that will index and generate results (Zoom Search, JSS Index, The German Guys') but there are odd quirks with each one. Plus I would rather code it myself to get complete control over it, and to really understand what it's doing. Basically searching for a few words would display the product image and description; clicking on that would take you the related URL. This is kind of complicated, I can't find an easy solution not dealing with hundreds of if Statements. Has anyone ever created anything like this or know a better method? I'm not really sure a better way to go about this. I've used PHP/MYSQL for search results before, but this cannot run any php.

You've visited this page 3 times. Last visit: 2012/08/15 Now since I fixed this and added a 301 redirect to redirect mysite.co.za to www.mysite.co.za I would love it if google bot would come do a visit. Is there anything I can do to get this fixed?

  Hello everyone. I am working on website and I am trying to make it fast as much as possible - especially the small things that can make my site a little bit quicker. So, my to my question - I got loop that run 5 times and in each time it echo something, If I'll make variable and the loop will add the text I want to echo into the variable and just in the end I'll echo the variable - will it be faster? loop 1 (with the echo inside the loop) for ($i = 0;$i < 5;$i++) { echo "test"; } loop 2 (with the echo outside [when the loop finish]) $echostr = ""; for ($i = 0;$i < 5;$i++) { $echostr .= "test"; } echo $echostr; I know that loop 2 will increase a bit the file size and therefore the user will have to download more bytes but If I got huge loop will it be better to use second loop or not? • How do I turn off nVidia high performance mode?

  I am new to Ubuntu 11.10 and never touched linux until today. I installed Ubuntu alongside with Windows 7. I have an issue with my laptop overheating and freezing when it uses the high performance GPU graphics mode (hybrid card). It is an easy fix for Windows 7. I simply set the graphics mode manually to the low performance integrated graphics (save power) mode using advanced power settings. In Ubuntu, I'm stumped at how to do this. When using Ubuntu, my laptop is showing the same symptoms as it did without the fix for Windows. I have the nVidia graphics driver installed for Windows which allows me to see which mode I am in. I downloaded it off of my laptop's website (ASUS). They do not offer driver downloads for linux. Screenshot of power settings in Windows 7

  I got a Brother printer MFC class. The brother website only provides 32-bit drivers but I installed 64-bit Ubuntu. It says I need to install "ia32-libs" or "lib32stdc++" to install the 32-bit drivers onto 64-bit Ubuntu. Elsewhere I've read that I don't need to install these packages, I can just use --force-all when installing, but I don't know of the accuracy of this information. My questions: 1) do I HAVE to install "ia32-libs" or "lib32stdc++" or can I use --force-all to make 32-bit drivers install on 64-bit ubuntu? 2) if I do have to install "ia32-libs" or "lib32stdc++", which should I install? Which is better, which is recommended by ubuntu experts?

• Can't install AMD drivers and Blinking problem

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with WUBI, everything is going fine and ubuntu is awesome but i have a little problem. When i open my Sony VAIO model E laptop, i have 2 choices (which is normal) but when i select Ubuntu 1/2 of the time it will just give a rapidly blinkin color background and can only be corrected if i reboot the computer and select ubuntu again. I think this has something to do with the fact i can't get any driver update for my computer from AMD, according to their website, VAIO computers aren't supported. I have a AMD RADEON HD 7650M graphic card which is not detected in ubuntu. When i try to install the drivers using the drivers application it gives a "can't install" error. What should i do?

  I have nearly ended my journey of making a dual-boot windows xp and ubuntu computer. Along with version 12.04, came the problem with my NetGear WNDA3100v2 wireless adapter. It wasn't compatible. My last step in my adventure is to install the software called Windows Wireless Drivers. I have internet access on my laptop and a flash drive. It would be preferable to receive a link to this program, because I see no link on the website, and I can't download it from the Ubuntu Software Center. Thanks.

• Podcast site - Serve audio files with CDN

  I am managing a small podcast website hosted on a shared server. Currently there are only eight or nine episodes, each of which are about 50 MB, so bandwidth is not really an issue at the moment. However, looking forward, would it be feasible to use a "free" CDN like Cloudflare to serve the audio files? If so, how would I set this up? I took a quick look at it before, and it seems you have to have your whole site routed (is that the right term?) through the CDN rather than just specific files or filetypes. I'd like some clarification on this.

• Error creating an .img file from an .ISO (MD5 verified)

  I was following the instructions on this website to create a bootable USB flash drive on a Mac: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx The instruction: hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso does not create a valid file that the disk utility can copy to the USB drive, making installation on a USB drive useless. I've been repeating these instructions for days with no luck. The only thing that does not work is the .ISO to .IMG conversion. Is there a way to download Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-but Desktop in a .IMG file already? Unfortunately, my install notebook does not have an optical drive so USB is the only way. Thanks for your help!

• Benefits of TOGAF or similar?

  I can read the website blurb and be impressed by the alleged benefits, but I haven't worked anywhere or with anyone who followed the TOGAF (or any alternative) architecture framework. Our organisation has declared itself dedicated to moving from what is currently a fairly shambolic design & development model towards something approaching a modern structured process. Things like TOGAF have been mentioned as helping achieve a world-class enterprise development environment (!) but I'm convinced that no-one here really understands the real-world benefits that wholesale adoption might bring and, perhaps more importantly, the effort/pain required to achieve the same. Do you have experience in using TOGAF or similar to wrestle control in an organisation? Do you think that use of the framework brought any benefit?   Hi, I have been doing Objective-C programming over the past few weeks, and I have learnt a lot. However, I see that there are other Web-companies offering services to consumers directly from their website that allow consumers to create their apps through a point and click and drag features without any code. Clearly they are more cost effective and fast than having a developer write an app. I was wondering if there are any advantages then of having a developer build an app for someone, other than the obvious advantage that its got a custom look and feel. Could someone please clarify, since Im new and would like to evaluate whether it is worthwhile spending time towards learning a whole new development environment when someone could just use a webservice to make an app for multiple platforms Thanks

  We are working on a jobs and skills website (similiar to Skill Pages) and are deciding on the names of categories. Rather than having loads of categories and sub-categories like, for example, Builder, Electrician, Carpenter etc, we would like to have more general and easier on the eye category names. So for example we have House, Computer, Education, Art etc. So a builder would be in category House and a few others. Will this style negatively effect our SEO and ranking? And if so, should we abandon and go back to traditional categories and sub-categories?

• Segment subdomains with Google Analytics?

  So, when a website has multiple subdomains: www.example.com foo.example.com bar.example.com What is the best way to use Google Analytics to segment the data? I would prefer have access to 'All Data', 'Data from foo.example.com', and 'Data from bar.example.com'. I tried setting up 3 different views, and setting a filter on the foo/bar views that says: Include only traffic from the ISP domain that are equal to foo.example.com. However, I am not seeing any data collected into that View. I do, however, see all data in the 'All Data' view, but I can't figure out how to segment the data. I am including the analytics.js in the application.haml layout, which is always loaded in this app. Thanks!

  Question just comes in front because the very recent published algorithm changes by Google been affected my website traffic. And I've been wondering that my homepage page-rank is been also drop to 6 to 4 (Might be I am not sure).
