• Facing Problems While Installing Java

  First When i downloaded java from official website i got confused how to install it. den i searched it on software center and i got it. but wen i install it, it starts but instantly stops and the line highlighting the installation status in progress tab doesn't move forward.den i searched on internet and tried installing it by terminal but he terminal says that u have to first configure something that i dont know but it tells me to run this command-"sudo dpkg-configure -a" and when i run this command the terminal process stops in the middle and even after leaving it for about an hour it doesn't proceed further.. after that when i press the close button of the terminal if shows that some tasks are in progress and closing the terminal would...bla bla bla... so i am greatly confused because even other software's like gimp image editor and all are not getting installed.. please help me..!!

• Bad search result due to strange linked domains

  I have a website which is not scoring good in Google's search results. I use Majestic SEO and Open Site Explorer in order to have a view about my link profile. I now see different backlink domains, some of them already removed, that contains sexual content or other non relative content linking to my domain. How much influence does these strange linked domains have on my search result? Even if some of them are already removed for a couple of months. I have already disavow open sexual domains using the tool that Google provides.

• Renaming site, moving domain after 3 yrs. Should I reconsider?

  After recently announcing it, one of my readers with a background in website management sent me an email saying that I should reconsider moving my domain from [keyword]news.org to [same keyword]lab.com. It is a content-heavy news site around products that I hope to eventually build into a more comprehensive authority for the [keyword] industry I'm covering w/ B2B services, merchandise, etc. The current domain is a bit generic & I think the new one will be more marketable. Relevant stats: 320k-350k pv's/month Google brings in 39% and Yahoo/Bing 4% of traffic 10-11% of monthly search strings contains " news" SEOMoz Open Site Explorer stats: Page authority: 65/100 Domain authority: 58/100 Linking root domains: 226 Total links: 35,700 I am familiar with what I need to do as far as 301 redirects, etc. I was assuming that I'd be ok after following Google's recommended procedures but now I am not so sure.

• How do I get font to display properly in all browsers? [migrated]

  I have the following in the CSS file for my website: body { font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 1.125em; line-height: 1.5em; } In Safari on my Mac the site has the font looking the way I want it: http://i.imgur.com/mywDZ.png However, on Windows computers in IE and Chrome the font does not look like the above, see: http://i.imgur.com/aL0vi.jpg My question is, how do I get the font to look the same in all the browsers on all OS such that looks like screenshot #1 above? • Remove home page from Google cache

  The Google Webmaster Tools Remove URL section allows you to specify a page URL to be removed from the index, or cache, or both. However, I want to remove just the home page, which is / I want to remove it from the cache because it is indexed when the "under construction" page was up. This URL is not recognised by the Remove URL section as an individual page. Instead Google assumes you want to remove the entire website from the index. I've specified /index.php and /index.html to be removed from the cache, but this is not the URL listed in the search results for the home page I want removed from the cache.

• Java Preferential Treatment

  I have icedtea6-plugin installed on my Ubuntu box. The weird thing is, when I am browsing the internet, certain website are able to use the Java and some websites are not. For instance, I am able to log in to my bank at nordea.dk. They use a Java applet to authenticate the user. But when I try to use keepvid.com, it says "Loading Java Applet". And then after a minute or two it says "Error: Please click here to download Java. If you already have Java, please restart your browser and try again." The thing is I've restarted my computer, closed and opened my browser(chromium) and none of it seems to help. Could someone please point me in the right direction to solve this problem? Thanks.

  Anyone know of a reputable domain name company which deals in .museum domain names? Previously we had used DomainBank without much issue. DomainBank was bought by Dotster and am having nothing but trouble since the switch. Currently the website has been down for two days and it is a MAJOR issue. I know .museum is a seldom used domain name but I really need to switch to a reputable company. GoDaddy doesn't work with them unfortunately. Anyone know of a good company that does?

• How to Dual Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10?

  So firstly I tried to install Ubuntu, from the website to run alongside Windows. Went through Wubi etc. Asked me if I wanted to try or Install, I selected install. I selected option to run alongside Windows 7 but when it was partitioning it failed and I only had the fresh install as an option as probably Windows became corrupt then? So I installed Windows again, ran Ubuntu from the livecd, went into gpartition, didn't really know what I was doing but anyhow, resized a partition which was 698gb, one was 100mb, I guessed CD drive. Gparted said it was gonna take three hours, so I took that for meaning Windows was corrupt again. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

  We're currently building a new responsive website and while working on the site map figured that we don't want to show certain sections on mobile devices. This can be easily done by hiding the navigation parts using css/media queries. However, trouble is that the hidden sites would still show up in search engines' search results. If a user happens to click on one of these links she might happen to see a badly formatted page as we'd use desktop/tablet only code to show images and video. Is there any way to "influence" to exclude certain pages if the search is done on a mobile device? Do search engines crawl pages once or with a device specific view twice? Could we set a noindex meta tag for a specific device class?

  Possible Duplicate: How to SEO a Single-Page website I created an online CV of mine a couple of weeks ago and it has had quite a few visits. Now I want to improve the chance it will appear in google search results; however, my web CV is a one-paged site and it contains only internal links (those with hash #) so I can't really submit a sitemap. I could have changed the internal links to normal links to be processed on server-side, but there's no point of doing so. I'm very new to web SEO so I would really appreciate if somebody can show me what should I do with a single-paged site with internal links to be effectively indexed by crawlers.

  So I know about tools like Copyscape and Google Alerts.. great tools, but it's quite tedious for me to copy and paste an URL or phrase for every one of my pages in my sites. Is there any tool out there that monitors your website and emails you or alerts you whenever someone has stolen content from your site? The only service I know is CopySentry and honestly, it's too expensive for me since I got thousands of pages I want to monitor... Anyone else have this problem? or is it just me? I've gotten two interviews since that went up to the technical phone interview and then they were no longer interested. One of the recruiters mentioned to me that they thought my fundamentals weren't strong enough. What do I need to brush up on in order to get past the technical phone interview. My language of most experience is C#. I know Object Oriented Programming. I know what the difference between an interface and an abstract class is. I don't want to get into trouble with the trademark owner so my plan is to use the domain to display information (wiki-style) about the service the trademark owner provides. • Site loads Extremely slowly over HTTPS; loads perfectly over HTTP - Sudden and new issue

  My business' website suddenly started loading extremely slowly over HTTPS last night and continues through today. The facts: Page loadtime via HTTPS - 2 minutes +, HTTP - 3 seconds max. NO updates were done on any site files in the past 2 weeks. This is on Shared Hosting HTTPS has worked perfectly over the past 9 months then suddenly failed yesterday. Hosting company and SSL issuer say there are no problems on their end. - Searches for others having similar issues return no results, it appears to be just me... Site is primarily run via php/mysql Currently attempted troubleshooting: Tried all major browsers and different versions - same result. Tried 2 separate ISPs - same result. Tried proxies - same result. Tried 3 separate computers - same result. I'm basically at a total loss here. Does anyone know what could cause such a thing to happen? Please help guide troubleshooting.

  I have a Fantasy F1 Website, currently users select their teams using dropdown menus. It works OK but isn't as user friendly as I would like. I would like to implement a drag and drop type of system, there's jQuery code out there that would go part of the way to allowing me to do this: http://jqueryui.com/demos/draggable/ But I am not sure about how to integrate that into PHP and MySQL, my jQuery skills are limited! I'd also need to stop them spending more than a certain amount of money, each driver has a value and the teams can only spend a certain amount of money. There's also limits for example you can only pick a driver once, but you can have three different drivers. Finally, how would you decide that the user had picked their team, I don't want a submit button as that kind of defeats the object of the exercise! Thanks for any advice, I don't expect anyone to write the code for me but some pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  I have a news website and on most posts the first paragraph is in bold. Currently the authors are just using <strong> to bold the paragraph, would it be better from an SEO point of view to rather use a paragraph class that is styled with p.bold {font-weight:bold;} <p class="bold">. Does <strong> on the first paragraph send the wrong message to search engines? The text is important but the main reason it is in bold is because it is the opening paragraph. • How to learn programming from very basic level to advanced level? [closed]

  I know many programming languages ,skills and concepts in very basic, such as PHP, Java, Object-oriented technology. Using PHP, I can build a simple website with CRUD, login function. Using Java, I can make an basic swing csv/plain text editor in which user can switch between 2 different views. In term of object-oriented Technology, I clearly understand what encapsulation, inheritance and Polymorphism are I want to know more about programming. Sometimes I "google" some of the topics I am interested at , the more I see on the internet, the more I feel I am a small potato in the world ( indeed I am ). The codings/concepts are difficult to understand. I lacks confidence right now so I am asking this question :( What is the best way to learn programming to advanced level?   Why do I ask? I want to use one language not two. Yes I know with Java and .NET I can program anything, but, as a website it should have a good design, I don't want to build ugly sites. Which is why for smaller sites I use PHP, I can get the e-comm I want and also a nice UI pretty easily, unlike in ASP.NET. But would I run into this design rstriction with Java (I've never used it). Plus, Java would also give me exposure to Android development. So..then I could ditch PHP? I guess I am looking for the 'one ring to rule them all', and not 2 or 3 (languages). Thanks in advance,

• Which MIME type to compress? and what If I omit the `type` attribute from the HTML?

  Per my request, my webhost had turned mod_deflate ON. In my Cpanel I now have an "Optimize Website" button. Inside that menu I could either choose: "Compress all content" or "Compress the specified MIME types" with the following default MIME types: "text/html text/plain text/xml" Which option should I choose and why? If I choose option 2, which types should I add (is there a recommended list with the exact way they should be written)? According to Google recommendations, I have omitted the type="text/css" attributes from all CSS references, as well as the type="text/javascript" attributes from all script references. Would this hinder the "gzipping" process?
