• Which forum software has the most advanced community/GetSatisfaction type features?

  I need to assemble a GetSatisfaction/Lithium/Jive type support forum/community. The first is not available in the desired language and the last two are priced for the enterprise market. I did research some other options (open source or SaaS) but they all seem to be either: kind of dead (open source options) too focused in gathering ideas/feedback (uservoice) strictly support without the community/voting features (zendesk) I need an open forum (people powered support/UGC with community/voting features). Therefore I will have to do some of the work on my own. I want to piece things (plugins/mods/etc) on top of a standard forum platform to give it the features I need. For this purpose, I want to use a mature product with widespread userbase, active community and lots of plugin options. I believe most will agree that my options therefore are: vBulletin phpBB SMF Here are the questions: Which one of the three above offers the easier path towards the desired goal? Which one of the three above has the most advanced features related to the desired goal? Of course I dont expect anyone to know these answers cut and dry. I am hoping to hear some experiences and see some examples. Also, it would be great if both those questions had the same answer, but I am not going to get my hopes up... PS: I wish I could add the tags "phpbb" and "smf" ;)

• The best way to learn how to extend Orchard

  We do have tutorials on the Orchard site, but we can't cover all topics, and recently I've found myself more and more responding to forum questions by pointing people to an existing module that was solving a similar problem to the one the question was about. I really like this way of learning by example and from the expertise of others. This is one of the reasons why we decided that modules would by default come in source code form that we compile dynamically. it makes them easy to understand and easier to modify for your own purposes. Hackability FTW! But how do you crack open a module and look at what's inside? You can do it in two different ways. First, you can just install the module from the gallery, directly from your Orchard instance's admin panel. Once you've done that, you can just look into your Modules directory under the web site. There is now a subfolder with the name of the new module that contains a csproj that you can open in Visual Studio or add to your Orchard solution. Second, you can simply download the package (it's NuGet) and rename it to a .zip extension. NuGet being based on Zip, this will open just fine in Windows Explorer: What you want to dig into is the Content/Modules/[NameOfTheModule] folder, which is where the actual code is. • dig and dig -x are answering different

  I don't want the name provider to manage my records. I want to handle it myself. So I installed bind9 and made some configurations reading some articles and following some examples. bind didn't show any error after I created/edited the required files but; When I write `dig www.foo.com, I see the IP of the advertisement page of my name provider. But when I write dig -x server_ip_address; I see the name I purchased. What am I doing wrong? Can't a server be the nameserver of it's own? Is it a must to configure the records from the company I bought the name from? By the way, I realised that, my previous question was not clear, I deleted it, and asking the same question in a different way.

• Acceptable placement of the composition root using dependency injection and inversion of control containers

  I've read in several sources including Mark Seemann's 'Ploeh' blog about how the appropriate placement of the composition root of an IoC container is as close as possible to the entry point of an application. In the .NET world, these applications seem to be commonly thought of as Web projects, WPF projects, console applications, things with a typical UI (read: not library projects). Is it really going against this sage advice to place the composition root at the entry point of a library project, when it represents the logical entry point of a group of library projects, and the client of a project group such as this is someone else's work, whose author can't or won't add the composition root to their project (a UI project or yet another library project, even)? I'm familiar with Ninject as an IoC container implementation, but I imagine many others work the same way in that they can scan for a module containing all the necessary binding configurations. This means I could put a binding module in its own library project to compile with my main library project's output, and if the client wanted to change the configuration (an unlikely scenario in my case), they could drop in a replacement dll to replace the library with the binding module. This seems to avoid the most common clients having to deal with dependency injection and composition roots at all, and would make for the cleanest API for the library project group. Yet this seems to fly in the face of conventional wisdom on the issue. Is it just that most of the advice out there makes the assumption that the developer has some coordination with the development of the UI project(s) as well, rather than my case, in which I'm just developing libraries for others to use?

• Puppet causes endless restarts of CUPS (how does one prevent this)

  Hi! It makes sense, and is in fact suggested on this site, to have a critical file change trigger a service restart with puppet meta-parameters (such as notify or subscribe). For example: ## file definition for printers.conf file { "/etc/cups/printers.conf": [snip], source => "puppet:///module/etc/cups/printers.conf" } ## service definition for sshd service { 'cups': ensure => running, subscribe => File['/etc/cups/printers.conf'] } But in the case of CUPS, this triggers and endless loop of restarts; the logic works like this: Change puppetmaster's version of /etc/cups/printers.conf puppetmaster pushes new version to client, triggering cups restart cupsd restart insists on putting its own time stamp at the top of printers.conf, 'Written by cupsd...' This change will be seen as out of date, so after runinterval, we return to (1). Is there a way to suppress cupsd's need to time stamp the file? Or is there a puppet trick that could help here? • Designing generic render/graphics component in C++?

  I'm trying to learn more about Component Entity systems. So I decided to write a Tetris clone. I'm using the "style" of component-entity system where the Entity is just a bag of Components, the Components are just data, a Node is a set of Components needed to accomplish something, and a System is a set of methods that operates on a Node. All of my components inherit from a basic IComponent interface. I'm trying to figure out how to design the Render/Graphics/Drawable Components. Originally, I was going to use SFML, and everything was going to be good. However, as this is an experimental system, I got the idea of being able to change out the render library at will. I thought that since the Rendering would be fairly componentized, this should be doable. However, I'm having problems figuring out how I would design a common Interface for the different types of Render Components. Should I be using C++ Template types? It seems that having the RenderComponent somehow return it's own mesh/sprite/whatever to the RenderSystem would be the simplest, but would be difficult to generalize. However, letting the RenderComponent just hold on to data about what it would render would make it hard to re-use this component for different renderable objects (background, falling piece, field of already fallen blocks, etc). I realize this is fairly over-engineered for a regular Tetris clone, but I'm trying to learn about component entity systems and making interchangeable components. It's just that rendering seems to be the hardest to split out for me.

• Centralize proxy settings for all the application on my workstation

  As a consultant, I used to work at different clients premises. It happens frequently that most of them has specific proxy settings, but not all the application I have installed on my laptop get settings from system preferences, for allowing me to change settings in one place. Some of them bypass system preferences completely, proposing their own mask for entering specific data such as username, host and password. I am looking for a convenient and not much intrusive way to share a common access point on which I could enter data, and maybe persist them. An 'automatic' switching would be ideal, for example based on some network identification, but there's no problem for me to enter data manually. I am not an IT expert, but to explain myself clearly, I am looking for a solution like .pac file is for browsers. Relevant OS I am using are MacOSX and Linux (Ubuntu).

• Outlook 2007 Clients attachments not opening correctly

  Hello, Thanks for taking the time to read this. We are having an issue on our Terminal Server clients that has me perplexed. We are running Server2003 x64 and Exchange 2007 environment. When we attempt to open an attachment for example .jpeg and the user selects to open the file, it prompts them to select a program to open the file with. The file associations apear to be fine, if I save the document to the desktop and open it, it opens with the correct program automatically. If i select "always open using this program" it will then open automatically, but I don't want to have to do this for all file types we open regularly on each client. Is this some sort of Exchange server security setting that is forcing them to associate the file? Does outlook or exchange maintain its own file association database? Thanks for reading!

• Creating Client Certificate - Windows

  I am trying to create client certifications against a microsoft CA using the built in website. (Microsoft Active directory Certificate Services) From what I can tell you have to login as the user to create the corresponding certificate. Is there anyway to get around that? I tried to create my own template duplicating the user tempalte but it doesn't match and gets rejected when trying to authenticate. Is this something I'd have to look at building? Any help is appreciative, thank you for your time.

• Looking for a small, light scene graph style abstraction lib for shader based OpenGL

  I'm looking for a 'lean and mean' c/c++ scene graph library for OpenGL that doesn't use any deprecated functionality. It should be cross platform (strictly speaking I just dev on Linux so no love lost if it doesn't work on Windows), and it should be possible to deploy to mobile targets (ie OpenGLES2, and no crazy mandatory dependencies that wouldn't port well to modern mobile frameworks like iOS, Android, etc), with a license that's compatible with closed source software (LGPL or more liberal). Specific nice-to-haves would be: Cameras and Viewers (trackball, fly-by, etc) Object transform hierarchies (if B is a child of A, and you move A, B has the same transform applied to it) Simple animation Scene optimization (frustum culling, use VBOs, minimize state changes, etc) Text I've played around with OpenSceneGraph a lot and it's pretty amazing for fixed function pipeline stuff, but I've had a few of problems using it with the programmable pipeline and after going through their mailing list, it seems several people have had similar issues (going back years). Kitware's VES looks neat (http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/VES), but VES + VTK is pretty heavy. VTK is also typically for analyzing scientific data and I've read that it's not that appropriate for a general use case (not that great at rendering a lot of objects on scene,etc) I'm currently looking at VisualizationLibrary (http://www.visualizationlibrary.org/documentation/pag_gallery.html) which looks like it offers some of the functionality I'd like, but it doesn't explicitly support mobile targets. Other solutions like Ogre, Horde3D, Irrlicht, etc tend to be full on game engines and that's not really what I'm looking for. I'd like some suggestions for other libraries that I may have missed... please note I'm not willing to roll my own solution from scratch.

• How to deal with a CEO making all technical decision but with little technical knowledge ?

  Hi, Question posted anonymously for obvious reasons. I am working in a company with a dev group of 5-6 developers, and I am in a situation which I have a hard time dealing with. Every technical choice (language, framework, database, database scheme, configuration scheme, etc...) is decided by the CEO, often without much rationale. It is very hard to modify those choices, and his main argument consists in "I don't like this", even though we propose several alternative with detailed pros/cons. He will also decide to rewrite from scratch our core product without giving a reason why, and he never participates to dev meetings because he considers it makes things slower... I am already looking at alternative job opportunities, but I was wondering if there anything we (the developers) could do to improve the situation. Two examples which shocked me: he will ask us to implement something akin to configuration management, but he reject any existing framework because they are not written in the language he likes (even though the implementation language is irrelevant). He also expects us to be able to write those systems in a couple of days, "because it is very simple". he keeps rewriting from scratch on his own our core product because the current codebase is too bad (codebase whose design was his). We are at our third rewrite in one year, each rewrite worse than the previous one. Things I have tried so far is doing elaborate benchmarks on our product (he keeps complaining that our software is too slow, and justifies rewrites to make it faster), implement solutions with existing products as working proof instead of just making pros/cons charts, etc... But still 90 % of those efforts go to the trashbox (never with any kind of rationale behind he does not like it, again), and often get reprimanded because I don't do exactly as he wants (not realizing that what he wants is impossible).

• 2D Side scroller collision detection

  I am trying to do some collision detection between objects and tiles, but the tiles do not have there own x and y position, they are just rendered to the x and y position given, there is an array of integers which has the ids of the tiles to use(which are given from an image and all the different colors are assigned different tiles) int x0 = camera.x / 16; int y0 = camera.y / 16; int x1 = (camera.x + screen.width) / 16; int y1 = (camera.y + screen.height) / 16; for(int y = y0; y < y1; y++) { if(y < 0 || y >= height) continue; // height is the height of the level for(int x = x0; x < x1; x++) { if(x < 0 || x >= width) continue; // width is the width of the level getTile(x, y).render(screen, x * 16, y * 16); } } I tried using the levels getTile method to see if the tile that the object was going to advance to, to see if it was a certain tile, but, it seems to only work in some directions. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong and fixes would be greatly appreciated. What's wrong is that it doesn't collide properly in every direction and also this is how I tested for a collision in the objects class if(!level.getTile((x + xa) / 16, (y + ya) / 16).isSolid()) { x += xa; y += ya; } EDIT: xa and ya represent the direction as well as the movement, if xa is negative it means the object is moving left, if its positive it is moving right, and same with ya except negative for up, positive for down.

  I want to use a server as a device to run a script to parse a SMS text in the following way. I. The person types in a specific and special cell phone number (Similar to Facebook’s 32556 number used to post on your wall) II. The user types a text message. III. The user sends the text message. IV. The message is sent to some kind of Device (the server) or SMS Gateway and receives it. V. The thing described above that the message is sent to then parse the test message. I understand that these three question will mix Programming and Server Stuff and could reside here or at DBA.SE How would I make such a cell phone number (described in step I) that would be sent to the Device? How do I create the device that then would receive it? Finally, how do I Parse the text message? I don't want to pay for cloud space, server scripting stuff or server space; I want to just use a free webserver to do this totally free - meaning I will have to do more on my own... • How do I install and run Tomcat on port 80 as my only web server? (Rooted Ubuntu box)

  Hi All, tl;dr - I have a rooted linux box that I want to run tomcat on as a server (No Apache Web Server) how would you set this up avoiding common security pitfalls? I've written a Grails App that I want to run on a VPS I rent. The VPS has very little memory and I am using it for the sole purpose of running this application so I don't need the apache web server. This is my first venture into Server administration and I'm sure to fall into some well known traps. Should I use iptables to redirect requests from port 80 to 8080? Should I run tomcat as root or as it's own user? What configuration settings would be good for a low memory system expecting less than 10 concurrent users? Hopefully an easy one for you! • Changes to talk/ytalk or alternative chat in the Linux terminal

  While looking for a piece of software that provides chat between 2 Linux server users logged in the terminal, I tried talk/ytalk. Unfortuntaley it provides chat between users on separate walls (each user has its own wall) and the messages lack timestamps. Is it possible to set it up so that at least timestamps are provided? Alternatively, is there any other software that could provide one wall on which users write messages prepended with time? Simple chat with messages listed in the order of submission would be ideal: 13:05:48 [bridgekeeper@...]: What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow? 13:06:28 [cascaval@...]: What do you mean? • Usage of two Routers on LAN

  I've currently own a Linksys E4200 and a Thomson 546v6. Because I have an IPTV service I must set the Thomson as the main router connected to the phone line so that I can distribute the video signal for 2 specific ports and the other two for LAN Access. The problem is that the Thomson doesn't like port forwards, it usually doesnt work and since I have a good router (linksys) currently only working as Access Point I would like to use it as a router itself. I don't want to do a NAT beyond NAT so my question is should I connect the E4200 and to thomson and set the E4200 as a DMZ machine and then control all trafic on the E4200 itself or is there any other option that could suit my needs better?

• Lightning fast forum based around metadata / tags? [closed]

  I wonder if anything like this exists. I'd like to add a forum to my site, but instead of the usual forum/subforum/sub-subforum structure, I'd like to use a metadata/tag approach where everything exists as a single directory, and where there's a search field at the top which instantly (<0.5 sec) filters the threads to a particular keyword or keywords. Also, as the admin, I would be able to add highly visible buttons at the top, which can be clicked on for the main categories I choose for the forum (nevertheless, users can also add tags to their own threads outside of these default main tags I supply if they wish). This approach, if done properly, is more powerful, efficient, maintenance free, scalable and friendly than a standard forum, so I was hoping someone had the same idea and made something out of it. It couldn't be that hard. I'd want the speed to be up to (or near) the standard of this: http://forum.dlang.org/ Other forums (e.g.: phpBB, shudder) are orders of magnitude worse than that in terms of latency (posting or browsing), and I think that is wrong, even in principle ;)

• Self-hosted browser-based remote desktop script?

  I need a self-hosted browser based remote desktop script that will connect me from any PC to my work PC. I need to either host this script within my own dedicated hosting or on my work PC. The PC that I need to remote into is always the one PC (Win7) and the IP never changes, and I have access to the Router/Firewall within. I have tried many remote desktop services and applications - LogMeIn, Team Viewer, (Ultra/Tight) VNC, GoToMyPC and iTeleport Connect and even Windows Remote Desktop - and the web services (or ports) are blocked at whatever free wi-fi/hotel/coffee shop I am at. Note that I will need to be able to access this from any PC, so I won't be able to install any applications (or use any portable software) - hence my thinking that it will need to be browser based on a standard (not blocked) port. If I can set up a web based remote desktop application - really a homebrew LogMeIn - then I should solve my problem. What is the best option here?

• Distributed Rendering in the UDK and Unity

  At the moment I'm looking at getting a game engine to run in a CAVE environment. So far, during my research I've seen a lot of people being able to get both Unity and the Unreal engine up and running in a CAVE (someone did get CryEngine to work in one, but there is little research data about it). As of yet, I have not cemented my final choice of engine for use in the next stage of my project. I've experience in both, so the learning curve will be gentle on both. And both of the engines offer stereoscopic rendering, either already inbuilt with ReadD (Unreal) or by doing it yourself (Unity). Both can also make use of other input devices as well, such as the kinect or other devices. So again, both engines are still on the table. For the last bit of my preliminary research, I was advised to see if either, or both engines could do distributed rendering. I was advised this, as the final game we make could go into a variety of differently sized CAVEs. The one I have access to is roughly 2.4m x 3m cubed, and have been duly informed that this one is a "baby" compared to others. So, finally onto my question: Can either the Unreal Engine, or Unity Engine make it possible for developers to allow distributed rendering? Either through in built devices, or by creating my own plugin / script?

• Why is my Asus P5PL2-E using 640MB of RAM (out of 4GB) ? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Windows XP and RAM 3.5GB+ I've recently installed 4GB of RAM on my server, which is running Windows XP SP2 32-bit and My Computer showed that only 3.37GB were installed. After digging Google for a bit, I couldn't find anything helpful, but I do remember reading a post in a forum regarding the motherboard using 640MB of RAM. Digging in my own BIOS, I've also found that my motherboard has also reserved that amount for its self. Why does my motherboard reserve this memory and how can I tune it down to say 128MB?

• Solution for storing sata drives outside of case

  I have a system that has 8 sata disks in a software raid 5 array using mdadm. My issue is that I want to move the drives from inside of the computer case in order to cool more efficiently. I have looked all over the web and only seem to find enclosures that hide the drives connectors behind an estata port or some other internal raid controller. Basically what I want is an enclosure or equivalent that I can run independent sata cables to and either power as well, or have it have its own power supply. I have the sata ports on the motherboard available and don't want to limit io by using one port with a multiplier or the like. One final caveat, I am a college student on a budget and don't have a fortune to spend on such an enclosure. Thanks in advance for your help and advice.
