FxCop hates my usage of MVVM

I've just started to work with FxCop to see how poorly my code does against its full set of rules. I'm starting off with the "Breaking" rules, and the first one I came across was CA2227, which basically says that you should make a collection property's setter readonly, so that you can't accidentally change the collection data. Since I'm using MVVM, I've found it very convenient to use an ObservableCollection with get/set properties because it makes my GUI updates easy and concise in the code-behind. However, I can also see what FxCop is complaining about. Another situation that I just ran into is with WF, where I need to set the parameters when creating the workflow, and I'd hate to have to write a wrapper class around the collection I'm using just to avoid this particular error message. For example, here's a sample runtime error message that I get when I make properties readonly: The activity 'MyWorkflow' has no public writable property named 'MyCollectionOfStuff' What are you opinions on this? I could either ignore this particular error, but that's probably not good because I could conceivably violate this rule elsewhere in the code where MVVM doesn't apply (model only code, for example). I think I could also change it from a property to a class with methods to manipulate the underlying collection, and then raise the necessary notification from the setter method. I'm a little confused... can anyone shed some light on this?

SMO restore of SQL database doesn't overwrite

I'm trying to restore a database from a backup file using SMO. If the database does not already exist then it works fine. However, if the database already exists then I get no errors, but the database is not overwritten. The "restore" process still takes just as long, so it looks like it's working and doing a restore, but in the end the database has not changed. I'm doing this in Powershell using SMO. The code is a bit long, but I've included it below. You'll notice that I do set $restore.ReplaceDatabase = $true. Also, I use a try-catch block and report on any errors (I hope), but none are returned. Any obvious mistakes? Is it possible that I'm not reporting some error and it's being hidden from me? Custom Installer class , rollback method never called.

Hi guys. The problem is that the RollBack method is not called. I don't see the expected entry in the event log. I want to mention that if i let the installation to complete , I do see the "Install" message in the event log and If i then uninstall , I see the "uninstall" message in the event log. But if stop the installtion process in the middle , by pressing the "cancel" button , I do see the progress bar going backward , but the rollback method is not called. what am I doing wrong ? thanks in advance for any help. Edit: Providing more details... The installer is an MSI package. The package is built in vs2009 using a setup project. The installer class is used as a custom action by the setup project. Since this is a MSI Package I have an option to run it in silent mode or in user-interactive more . When I wrote "Full GUI mode" , I ment User-Interactive mode.

How to diagnose frequent segfaults

My first guess was that there's a Hardware problem of some sort and I asked my Hoster (it's a rented root server) to do a full hardwarecheck - they did, but couldn't find any problem. I don't know what and how they checked but their support team is usually quite good. I ran memtester and cpuburn myself and couldn't find any error either. Unfortunately I have no reliable way to reproduce these segfaults, they seem to be more or less random. On a hunch I disabled the firewall of the system and ran one of the programs that segfaulted regularily (imapsync) and it seemed to take longer to segfault than before, so the problem might be related to the network stack. Or could just be a random thing. How to best design a date/geographic proximity query on GAE?

Hi all, I'm building a directory for finding athletic tournaments on GAE with web2py and a Flex front end. The user selects a location, a radius, and a maximum date from a set of choices. I have a basic version of this query implemented, but it's inefficient and slow. One way I know I can improve it is by condensing the many individual queries I'm using to assemble the objects into bulk queries. I just learned that was possible. But I'm also thinking about a more extensive redesign that utilizes memcache. The main problem is that I can't query the datastore by location because GAE won't allow multiple numerical comparison statements (<,<=,=,) in one query. I'm already using one for date, and I'd need TWO to check both latitude and longitude, so it's a no go. Currently, my algorithm looks like this: 1.) Query by date and select 2.) Use destination function from geopy's distance module to find the max and min latitude and longitudes for supplied distance 3.) Loop through results and remove all with lat/lng outside max/min 4.) Loop through again and use distance function to check exact distance, because step 2 will include some areas outside the radius. Remove results outside supplied distance (is this 2/3/4 combination inefficent?) 5.) Assemble many-to-many lists and attach to objects (this is where I need to switch to bulk operations) 6.) Return to client Here's my plan for using memcache.. let me know if I'm way out in left field on this as I have no prior experience with memcache or server caching in general. -Keep a list in the cache filled with "geo objects" that represent all my data. These have five properties: latitude, longitude, event_id, event_type (in anticipation of expanding beyond tournaments), and start_date. This list will be sorted by date. -Also keep a dict of pointers in the cache which represent the start and end indices in the cache for all the date ranges my app uses (next week, 2 weeks, month, 3 months, 6 months, year, 2 years). -Have a scheduled task that updates the pointers daily at 12am. -Add new inserts to the cache as well as the datastore; update pointers. Using this design, the algorithm would now look like: 1.) Use pointers to slice off appropriate chunk of list based on supplied date. 2-4.) Same as above algorithm, except with geo objects 5.) Use bulk operation to select full tournaments using remaining geo objects' event_ids 6.) Assemble many-to-manys 7.) Return to client Thoughts on this approach? iPhone SDK: Audio Queue control

Hi all, I am new to the audio queue services so I have taken an example from a book called iPhone Cool Projects where it describes how to stream audio. I want to extend this to being able to play a continuous playlist of links to mp3 files like an internet radio. The problem with the example code it that it does not detect when a stream ends and does not call AudioQueueStop at any point, so I added a counter to number of buffers added to the queue, and then decrement this counter each time audioQueueOutputCallback is called by the queue. This works fine except if when the buffer count goes to 0, and then I add a call AudioQueueFlush(audioQueue) and then AudioQueueStop(audioQueue, false) I get an error. I read that there was a limit of 1 audio queue for MP3 playback for the iPhone. Is that still true? If not then I suppose I should use another audio queue for the next mp3 stream. I've had a look through the apple docs but it doesn't explain this in any particular detail. A better insight into this would be great. TIA.

I've tried several variations, but I seem unable to get the correct join syntax. Is this simply a case of a query that is too complicated for LINQ? Can it be done using nested queries some how? The purpose of the query is to find the most recently updated posts i.e. replying to a post would bump it to the top of the list. Replies are defined by the ParentID column, which is self-referencing.

Application Errors vs User Errors in PHP

So after much debate back and forth, I've come up with what I think may be a valid plan to handle Application/System errors vs User Errors (I.e. Validation Issues, Permission Issues etc). Application/System Errors will be handled using a custom error handler (via set_error_handler()). Depending on the severity of the error, the user may be redirected to a generic error page (I.e. Fatal Error), or the error may simply be silently logged (i.e E_WARNING). These errors are ones most likely caused by issues outside the users control (Missing file, Bad logic, etc). The second set of errors would be User Generated ones. These are the ones may not automatically trigger an error but would be considered one. In these cases i"ve decided to use the trigger_error() function and typically throw a waning or notice which would be logged silently by the error handler. After that it would be up to the developer to then redirect the user to another page or display some sort of more meaningful message to the user. This way an error of any type is always logged, but user errors still allow the developer freedom to handle it in their own ways. I.e. Redirect them back to their form with it fully repopulated and a message of what went wrong. Does anyone see anything wrong with this, or have a more intuitive way? My approach to error handling is typically everyone has their own ways but there must be a way instituted.

Salesforce/PHP - outbound messages (SOAP) - memory limit issue

I'm using Salesforce to send outbound messages (via SOAP) to another server. The server can process about 8 messages at a time, but will not send back the ACK file if the SOAP request contains more than 8 messages. SF can send up to 100 outbound messages in 1 SOAP request and I think this is causing a memory issue with PHP. If I process the outbound messages 1 by 1 they all go through fine, I can even do 8 at a time with no issues. But larger sets are not working. ERROR in SF: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Premature end of file Looking in the HTTP error logs I see that the incoming SOAP message looks to be getting cut of which throws a PHP warning stating: Premature end of data in tag ... PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function getAttribute() on a non-object This leads me to believe that PHP is having a memory issue and can not parse the incoming message due to it's size. I was thinking I could just set: ini_set('memory_limit', '64M'); But would this be the correct approach? Is there a way I could set this to increase with the incoming SOAP request dynamically? I am trying to reuse a UserControl and also borrow some logic that keeps track of progress. I'll try and simplify things. MyWindow.xaml includes a MyUserControl. MyUserControl has its own progress indicator (Formatting in progress..., Copying files..., etc.) and I'd like to mirror this progress somewhere in the MyWindow form. But, the user control has some logic I don't quite understand. I've read and read but I still don't understand the Dispatcher. If I put a message box inside the SetActivation method, the thread blocks and the window's progress indicator is updated. I understand basic threads but this whole Dispatcher thing is new to me. Zooming in an NSView

Hi, I have an NSView in which the user can draw circles. These circles are stored as an array of NSBezierPaths, and in drawRect:, I loop through the array and call -stroke on each of the paths. How do I add a button to zoom in and out the NSView? Just change the bounds of the view? Thanks.

So far I can only seem to accept connections but then they are immediately closed. From the docs I can't figure out what step I am missing. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this for me. Mochiweb's Scalability Features

From all the articles I've read so far about Mochiweb, I've heard this over and over again that Mochiweb provides very good scalability. My question is, how exactly does Mochiweb get its scalability property? Is it from Erlang's inherent scalability properties or does Mochiweb have any additional code that explicitly enables it to scale well? Put another way, if I were to write a simple HTTP server in Erlang myself, with a simple 'loop' (recursive function) to handle requests, would it have the same level scalability as a simple web server built using the Mochiweb framework?

Sequence reduction in R

Assume you have a vector like so: v <- c(1,1,1,2,2,2,2,1,1,3,3,3,3) How can it be best reduced to a data.frame like this? v.df <- data.frame(value=c(1,2,1,3),repetitions=c(3,4,2,4)) In a procedural language I might just iterate through a loop and build the data.frame as I go, but with a large dataset in R such an approach is inefficient. Any advice?
