• How can I open urls on my host machine with VMWARE?

  I am running a Windows 7 vm with WMware player from Fedora. I have VMWare tools installed successfully and I have successfully some of it's features like Unity mode so it seems to be installed correctly. That being said I still cannot get urls to open up in my host machine's browsers, these are the steps I have taken: Within the vm I set "Default Host Application" to be the application to open urls. Within my host machine I have set Chrome to be my preferred application for opening urls. Enabled Shared Folders in the vm (Not sure if that really helped anything but I saw it suggested on a forum post) After doing that when I click on a link I get the following error message: Default host Application: Make sure the virtual machine's configuration allows the guest to open host applications. I cannot find any option like that in my vm's configuration so I am not sure what the error message is referring to.

• How to configure Apache so all requests go to single CGI file

  I'm porting a CGI application from an embedded web server to run under Apache. In the effort of changing the least amount required I'm trying to figure out how to configure Apache so any requests coming in go to my CGI program, which then will use the QueryString environmental variable to determine which file needs to be created. I have Apache working now to where it will process my CGI file if it's requested directly i.e. localhost/cgi-bin/cgi_test.out but I need to figure out how to get my application to be called whenever any file is requested: localhost/ - call my application with QueryString set to "" or "/" localhost/thisFile - call my application with QueryString set to "/thisFile" etc. I have been doing all of my configuration testing under /etc/apache2/sites-available/mysite, which has been enabled and the default disabled. Thanks for any help. I've tried the recommendation from here: http://serverfault.com/questions/56082/configure-apache-to-handle-all-requests-via-single-index-php but I keep getting circular redirects.

• Scheduled Task to show console window when logged on but still run when not logged on

  Is it possible (and if so, how) to set up a task (console application) in Server 2008 so that it'll run both when a user is logged in and when no user is logged in, AND - if the user is logged in (either local or via RDP) - have the console appear on the screen while the program is running? Ie. the program should run under the defined user context and it writes status messages to stdout, which goes to a standard console window. This console window is either shown (if the defined user is currently logged in locally or via RDP), or not shown (but the application is still run). I have access to the source of the console application, so if it needs some additional code (like specifically opening up a new console window or what have you), then that's not a problem. At the moment, I can set up the task as "Run only when user is logged on" which will run the application when the user is logged on (local or RDP) and I can then see the status messages, or I can set it up as "Run whether user is logged or not" and no status output is visible - not even if the user is logged on.

Just need to add, this is because we generate reports server-side and make them available in a number of downloadable formats (Excel, PDF etc), hence the need to have the fonts installed on the server. I have console access to our webfarm, and from the server I've copied the .ttf files and placed them in c:\fonts folder. Then I run the following VBScript on the server. It doesn't happen on all of our clients either and it happens randomly on those who it does happen. • Windows Explorer keeps crashing in Windows 8.1

  This started a few days ago on a machine that has been running WIn 8.1 for over a month. I just finished a clean install of Windows 8.1 with a handful of apps like Dropbox and Office. I know that you can target a single application, but only one that is already running. I want to detect all readfile-events an application is trying to do, ever since it is started. I don't want to miss out on any event. How do you achieve this?

• Fortigate - Accessing a Virtual Server address from several interfaces

  I am setting up a new application in its own DMZ on our Fortigate 300C firewalls. I have defined a load-balancing configuration for part of the application, and this works fine for traffic coming in from our internal network. However, I would also like this application to be reachable from other DMZs, for inter-application traffic, and from the SSL VPN interface. I can't seem to define the required policy, and it seems this is due to Virtual Servers being bound to the client interface on the Fortigate rather than the server interface (and so my virtual IP is not accessible from any of these other interfaces) Does anyone have an idea how I might go about this ? I guess I could create other virtual IPs for each interface, but this gets complicated to handle as clients need to change the address they use depending on how they are connecting. Thanks, Jeremy G

Question What is the bandwidth for each of the connectors? I would be temped to say 6Gb/s * 4, but then it mentions the "Port Configurations" and 2ea, 4ea, 16ea, which I don't understand what is. Does this mean, that the 4 physical connectors are not identical?

• Windows XP IIS5 performance across Network

  Hi, Just wondering whether Windows XP with IIS5 running needs any extra configuration to be suitable as a web server...I'm not considering using this for anything other than a web server on a small network for testing development etc One of the reasons I'm concerned though is that we've deployed an asp.net application to a workstation with Windows XP, and running the application using a browser on the machine (so accessing it through localhost/myApp/page.aspx and not accessing it through the network) runs the application really quickly. If another machine on the LAN accesses the same page (using http://ComputerName/myApp/page.apx) then the whole application runs noticeably slower...yet the computers are connected on a gigabit switch...so I wouldn't have thought network latency or bandwidth could be an issue... Does Windows XP need anything etc enabled or changed or network settings for it to work correctly?

• Is it possible to load balance requests from a single source?

  In our application, Server A establishes a TCP connection with Server B, then it sends a large amount of requests to Server B over the TCP connection. The request message is XML-based. Server B needs to respond within a very short period, and it takes time to process the requests. So we hope a load balancer can be introduced and we can expedite the processing by using multiple Server B's. This is not a web application. I did some research but failed to find a similar application of load balancer. Can anyone tell me if there's a load balancer can help in our application?

  I created an ASP.net MVC developed web application and I am trying to set up IIS. The Error: Http error 500.19, error code 0x80070005, Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions, config file: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\BudgetManagerMain\BudgetManager\web.config If I set the AppPool to use 'administrator' i have no problems and can access the site just fine. If i set to NETWORK SERVICE (or anything else including self-created admin or non-admin user accounts), i get the above error. Things I have tried: identity for Application pool named 'test' is 'NetworkService' Set full access privs for wwwroot and all children files/folders verified effective permissions and NETWORK SERVICE has full access. We don't want the users to download and install other applications, so we disable this by a BES policy (disable Third Party Software Downloads). But when we disable this, the application push does not work anymore. • Rotate other logs with rotatelogs.exe

  On my machine there is some process which is writing a log in C:\Application.log. Now I want to rotate the logs file without stopping that application. On the same machine I have apache 2.2. As I know we can use apache's rotatelogs.exe, but it is not rotating the log file I am using following syntax to rotate the log file: C:\Apache\bin\rotatelogs.exe C:\Application.log 20M Need expert opinion to achieve this.

• Change Management Software

  I manage an 80,000 user CIS application written in Uniface. Every form in the application, and many of its processes, are represented by .frm files. We have hundreds of these files and 5 instances of the application. Instances include multiple production installations which must be kept sync'd. We do not get MD5 from our vendor for files that are released to us as patches. We have been using a spreadsheet to track changes, but this is far from ideal. Is there a commercial application that can be purchased that will allow us to track changes to the instances? Thank you all! EDIT: Patches are released as zip files with either FRM files in them or SQL files or a mix of both. SQL files will contain statements that need to be run in Oracle. Patches are also assigned unique patch numbers.

• Windows 2003 Enterprise Server becomes unresponsive occasionally

  We're experiencing issues with our Windows 2003 server, which runs SQL Server 2005 SP1. We notice that sometimes the entire server becomes unresponsive and I captured a screenshot of the task manager when this happened. I noticed that the processes are not displayed during this time and all of the memory information and handles disappear (as shown in the screenshot). Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong with this sytem? I'm planning to take it down over the weekend to run Memtest86. I also tried to run a ping when this occurred and I got the following error in the event log: "Application popup: ping.exe - Application Error: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). • How to configure Linux to open files by extension?

  The various Linux's desktops open files according to their mime type. This is a very nice feature but I also need to open them by extension (as with Windows). For instance, I want to open every xxxxx.vnc files with a specific program when I double-click on them. I use xfce but I don't think it differs from Gnome or KDE because all of them use the same configuration files (defaults.list and mimeapps.list). If possible the settings are user specific, not system wide. I've found some very poor informations about that, and all are system wide, so may be wiped out by some updates.

• Improving terminal server performance for a specfic app

  We have a windows 2003 terminal server running 2X application load balancign that is hosting a client's application that is accessed by around 50 users. Each user has there own database. The database is a file based database. The application is developed under Delphi so I think the database may be BDE based. As you can imagine, there is probably quite a lot of disk i/o. Here are some of the perfmon settings. Logged in users (average) 20 - 25 CPU Utilization (average) 80 - 100% Disk Queue Length (average) 1.6 % Disk time (average) 111 Page faults/sec (average) 1400 The application takes on average about a minute to load up. As usual, the budget is tight. Is there basic windows performance tuning tips that people can recommend to improve things before we fork out on more RAM etc. Server is a 2.8GHz Xeon with 3GB of RAM.

• DRS: Unknown JNLP Location

  We are using Deployment Rule Sets to limit access to the older JRE to well-known applications like - but are running into a problem. One business critical applications has the following properties (*s to protect info): title: Enterprise Services Repository location: null jar location: http://app.*.com:52400/rep/repository/*.jar jar version: null isArtifact: true The application downloads a .jnlp file, and uses java web start to execute. Since the location is null, this application cannot be targeted by a location rule. And the certificate hash method only works when the application is cached (being ran more than once). If cache storing is off, which is the case in some situations, how can this application be targeted? Or at least told to run with an older JRE on start? This problem is specifically noted in this bug Thanks!
