  • BlackBerry Deployment Strategies

    I'm new to large scale BB app deployment and I'm looking for some clarification on the various methods of deployment. Please bear with me as I'm sure there is more to it than my naive view would lead me to believe. My app is very targeted to corporate users and requires a subscription to some additional services before it can be used. In other words, it's not targeted towards the consumer market, so I'm not worried about people not being able to easily find it online. What do I need to be aware of when looking at deployment strategies? Any gotchas? From my understanding my choices are: - App World small upfront vendor fee users can easily search for and find my app billing handled by RIM 4 licensing models (static, single, pool, dynamic). Though I'm not sure I've seen enough info on the pool and dynamic to fully appreciate how it might help me. - Download from my website billing is handled by me can I enforce the number of licenses that are in use within an organization? is this easier/harder for a user? - What else am I missing?

  • What can a company possibly gain by making Android phones hard to root?

    As someone who recently got a HTC Hero, I had to jump through several hoops to get root access on the phone to install custom firmware. Now, Android is open-source and fairly easy to build and hack on an emulator. It seems to be against the spirit of open-source to lock down a phone so you can't hack the phone itself. Now, often, there are understandable (though not always justifiable) reasons for locking a device down. For example, it might have proprietary software on it or you might want to retain control of the platform. However, Android by its open-source nature makes such concerns moot. Everyone and their dog has access to the userland code, and HTC is forced by the GPL to release kernel sources for each of their devices. So, I fail to see any motivation for alienating the hackers, when there is no possible benefit (in my mind) to be had from doing this. Any idea why a company would want to do this? Is it just short-sightedness or am I missing possible commercial implications of this?

  • What data/service is where?

    What management tools (open source or otherwise) are there to track the location of data, the services that deliver/use that data and the services themselves. If you believe the snake oil a combination of DB, ESB and SOA will deliver anything anywhere, but how do you know what's where. BTW I'm not interested at the WSDL level, I'm thinking of a tool that the users/BA community would populate and use. A combination of SOA and Database is now the bedrock of most applications, however what used to be called Data Dictionaries, and would now be Service Catalogues? or MetaData repositories still seem to live in purely DataCentric world.

  • JAVA SDK Modifying Table Column

    I have the ReportBlock from the type VTable that I am modifying. I am able to get the horizonatal block axis to modify the cells but, I cannot seem to modify the column header (different object). I started to look into trying to get back a smalltable but, I am not confident in this approach. Any idea?

  • Drools rules import with wildcard

    Hello everyone, I am working with Drools rules. Some developers have created rules which I have to put on Guvnor (rules repository) and build packages. In these rules they have import statements with wildcards, for example: import org.drools.runtime.rule.*; When I upload this on Guvnor and try to build, it tells me: Unable to introspect model for wild card imports (org.drools.runtime.rule.*). Please explicitly import each fact type you require. Is it possible to use wildcard imports in Drools rules???

    If we (I and my friends) would like to build web-based products and sell it using a license approach (to renew every year for example). Which server-side language will be most suitable for our purpose? We could target the following audience: - Personal sites. - Serious small-medium companies (to sell prducts such as Help-Desks, Forms,etc.) - Restaurants (to sell online order web applications). We would like to - attract as many customers as possible. - provide updates for our prodcuts (for our customers). - make our products easy to use. There are number of open-source frameworks and languages that has potential to handle our business problems (like Django, Python, Java, etc..) However, we are not sure which one is easier to learn and has variety of tools/plugins to help us in development process. Thus we need to get you experience on this hard to decide matter. Consider the following scenario: A state machine is used in a workflow engine, and after the state of the application is changed, a series of commands are executed. Depending on the state, different types of commands should be executed. As I see it, one implementation is to create List<IAction> and have each individual action determine whether it should execute. Would a Aspect Oriented process work as well? That is, could you create an aspect that notifies a class when a property changes, and execute the appropriate processes from that class? Would this help centralize the state specific rules?

  • Drools - Doing Complex Stuff inside a Rule Condition or Consequence

    Hello, In my company we are planning to use Drools a BRE for couple of projects. Now we trying to define some best-practices. My question is what should be and shouldn't be done inside a Rule Condition/Consequence. Given that we can write Java directly or call methods (for example From a Global object in the Working Memory). Example. Given a Rule that evaluates a generic Object (e.g. Person) have property set to true. Now, that specific propertie can only be defined for that Object going to the database and fetching that info. So we have two ways of implementing that: Alternative A: Go to the database and fetch the object property (true/false, a code) Insert the Object in the working memory Evaluate the rule Alternative B: Insert a Global Object that has a method that connects to the database and check for the property for the given object. Insert the Object to eval in Working Memory In the rule, call the Global Object and perform the access to the database Which of those is considered better? I really like A, but sometimes B is more straightforward, however what would happen if something like a Exception from the Database is raised? I have seen the alternative B implemented in the Drools 5.0 Book from Packt Publishing,however they are doing a mocking and they don't talk about the actual implications of going to the database at all.
