• Changing the sequencing strategy for File/Ftp Adapter

  The File/Ftp Adapter allows the user to configure the outbound write to use a sequence number. For example, if I choose address-data_%SEQ%.txt as the FileNamingConvention, then all my files would be generated as address-data_1.txt, address-data_2.txt,...and so on. But, where does this sequence number come from? The answer lies in the "control directory" for the particular adapter project(or scenario). In general, for every project that use the File or Ftp Adapter, a unique directory is created for book keeping purposes. And since this control directory is required to be unique, the adapter uses a digest to make sure that no two control directories are the same. For example, for my FlatStructure sample, the control information for my project would go under FMW_HOME/user_projects/domains/soainfra/fileftp/controlFiles/[DIGEST]/outbound where the value of DIGEST would differ from one project to another. If you look under this directory, you will see a file control_ob.properties and this is where the sequence number is maintained. Please note that the sequence number is maintained in binary form and you hence you might need a hex editor to view its content. You will also see another zero byte file, SEQ_nnn, but, ignore that for now. We'll get to it some other time. For now, please remember that this extra file is maintained as a backup. One of the challenges faced by the adapter runtime is to guard all writes to the control files so no two threads inadverently try to update them at the same time. And, it does so with the help of a "Mutex". For now, please remember that the mutex comes in different flavors: In-memory DB-based Coherence-based User-defined Again, we will talk about these mutexes some other time. Please note that there might be scenarios, particularly under heavy load, where the mutex might become a bottleneck. The adapter, however,  allows you to change the configuration so that the adapter sequence value comes from a database sequence or a stored procedure and in such situation, the mutex is acually by-passed and thereby resulting in better throughputs. In later releases, the behavior of the adapter would be defaulted to use a db-sequence.  The simplest way to achieve this is by switching your JNDI for the outbound JCA file to use "eis/HAFileAdapter" as shown   But, what does this do? Internally, the adapter runtime creates a sequence on the oracle database. For example, if you do a "select * from user_sequences" in your soa-infra schema, you will see a new sequence being created with name as SEQ_<GUID>__ where the GUID will differ from one project to another. However, if you want to use your own sequence, then it would require you to add a new property to your JCA file called SequenceName as shown below. Please note that you will need to create this sequence on your soainfra schema beforehand.     But, what if we use DB2 or MSSQL Server as the dehydration support? DB2 supports sequences natively but MSSQL Server does not. So, the adapter runtime uses a natively generated sequence for DB2, but, for MSSQL server, the adapter relies on a stored procedure that ships with the product. If you wish to achieve the same result for SOA Suite running DB2 as the dehydration store, simply change your connection factory JNDI name in the JCA file to eis/HAFileAdapterDB2 and for MSSQL, please use eis/HAFileAdapterMSSQL. And, if you wish to use a stored procedure other than the one that ships with the product, you will need to rely on binding properties to override the adapter behavior. Particularly, you will need to instruct the adapter that you wish to use a stored procedure as shown:       Please note that if you're using the File/Ftp Adapter in Append mode, then the adapter runtime degrades the mutex to use pessimistic locks as we don't want writers from different nodes to append to the same file at the same time.

The first thing to do is to ensure that you are following the prescribed order for closing the period, if you are using more than one sub-ledger. Next, review the information shared in the Evaluate and Prepare and Process Transactions phases. Make sure that you are following the recommended best practices; you have applied the recommended patches, etc. The Reconcile phase gives you the recommended steps to follow for reconciling a sub-ledger with the General Ledger. • Seven Random Thoughts on JavaOne

  As most people reading this blog may know, last week was JavaOne. There are a lot of summary/recap articles popping up now, and while I didn't want to just "add to pile", I did want to share a few observations. Disclaimer: I am an Oracle employee, but most of these observations are either externally verifiable or based upon a collection of opinions from Oracle and non-Oracle attendees alike. Anyway, here are a few take-aways: The Java ecosystem is alive and well, with a breadth and depth that is impossible to adequately describe in a short post...or a long post, for that matter. If there is any one area within the Java language or JVM that you would like to - or need to - know more about, it's well-represented at J1. While there are several IDEs that are used to great effect by the developer community, NetBeans is on a roll. I lost count how many sessions mentioned or used NetBeans, but it was by far the dominant IDE in use at J1. As a recent re-convert to NetBeans, I wasn't surprised others liked it so well, only how many. OpenJDK, OpenJFX, etc. Many developers were understandably concerned with the change of sponsorship/leadership when Java creator and longtime steward Sun Microsystems was acquired by Oracle. The read I got from attendees regarding Oracle's stewardship was almost universally positive, and the push for "openness" is deep and wide within the current Java environs. Few would probably have imagined it to be this good, this soon. Someone observed that "Larry (Ellison) is competitive, and he wants to be the best...so if he wants to have a community, it will be the best community on the planet." Like any company, Oracle is bound to make missteps, but leadership seems to be striking an excellent balance between embracing open efforts and innovating in competitive paid offerings. JavaFX (2.x) isn't perfect or comprehensive, but a great many people (myself included) see great potential, are developing for it, and are really excited about where it is and where it may be headed. This is another part of the Java ecosystem that has impressive depth for being so new (JavaFX 1.x aside). If you haven't kicked the tires yet, give it a try! You'll be surprised at how capable and versatile it is, and you'll probably catch yourself smiling while coding again.  :-) JavaEE is everywhere. Not exactly a newsflash, but there is a lot of buzz around EE still/again/anew. Sessions ranged from updated component specs/technologies to Websockets/HTML5, from frameworks to profiles and application servers. Programming "server-side" Java isn't confined to the server (as you no doubt realize), and if you still consider JavaEE a cumbersome beast, you clearly haven't been using the last couple of versions. Download GlassFish or the WebLogic Zip distro (or another JavaEE 6 implementation) and treat yourself. JavaOne is not inexpensive, but to paraphrase an old saying, "If you think that's expensive, you should try ignorance." :-) I suppose it's possible to attend J1 and learn nothing, but you'd have to really work at it! Attending even a single session is bound to expand your horizons and make you approach your code, your problem domain, differently...even if it's a session about something you already know quite well. The various presenters offer vastly different perspectives and challenge you to re-think your own approach(es). And finally, if you think the scheduled sessions are great - and make no mistake, most are clearly outstanding - wait until you see what you pick up from what I like to call the "hallway sessions". Between the presentations, people freely mingle in the hallways, go to lunch and dinner together, and talk. And talk. And talk. Ideas flow freely, sparking other ideas and the "crowdsourcing" of knowledge in a way that is hard to imagine outside of a conference of this magnitude. Consider this the "GO" part of a "BOGO" (Buy One, Get One) offer: you buy the ticket to the "structured" part of JavaOne and get the hallway sessions at no additional charge. They're really that good. If you weren't able to make it to JavaOne this year, you can still watch/listen to the sessions online by visiting the JavaOne course catalog and clicking the media link(s) in the right column - another demonstration of Oracle's commitment to the Java community. But make plans to be there next year to get the full benefit! You'll be glad you did.   The purpose of this post is to guide you setting up the integration between UCM and SES. On my next post I’ll show different approaches to integrate WebCenter Portal, UCM and SES based on some common scenarios. Let’s get started. WebCenter Content Configuration WebCenter Content has a component that adds functionality to the content server to allow it to be searched via the Oracle SES. To enable the component installation, go to Administration -&gt; Admin Server and select SESCrawlerExport. Click the update button and restart UCM_server1 managed server. Once the managed server is back, we’ll configure the component. In the menu, under Administration you should see SESCrawlerExport. Click on the link. You’ll see the window below. Click on Configure SESCrawlerExport. Configure the values below: Hostname: SES hostname. Feed Location: Directory where data feeds will be saved. Metadata List: List of metadata that will be searchable by SES. After updating the values click on the Update button. Come back to the SESCrawlerExport Administration UI and click on Take Snapshot button. It will create the data feeds in the specified Feed Location. To check if the correct configuration was done, please access the following URL http://&lt;ucm_server&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/cs/idcplg?IdcService=SES_CRAWLER_DOWLOAD_CONFIG&amp;source=default. Notice that /cs/idcplg was added at the end of the URL. Admin User: UCM Admin user. This user must have access to all CPOE content. Password: Password to Admin user. Authentication Type: NATIVE. Go back to the Home tab and click on Sources on the top left. Select Oracle Content Server on the right and click the Create button. Configuration URL: URL that point to the configuration file. Example: http://&lt;ucm_hostname&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/cs/idcplg?IdcService=SES_CRAWLER_DOWNLOAD_CONFIG&amp;source=default. User ID: UCM Admin user. Password: Password to Admin user. Click on the Authorization tab and add the appropriate values to the fields below. Make sure you see the ACCOUNT and DOCSECURITYGROUP security attributes at the end of the page. HTTP endpoint for authorization: http://&lt;ucm_hostname&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/cs/idcplg. Display URL prefix: http://&lt;ucm_hostname&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/cs. Administrator user: UCM Admin user. Administrator password. On the Document Types tab, add the documents that should be indexed by SES. As our last step, we’ll configure the Federation Trusted Entities under Global Settings. Entity Name: The user must be present in both the identity management server configured for your WebCenter application and the identity management server configured for Oracle SES. For instance, I used weblogic in my sample. Password: Entity user password.\ Now you are ready to test the integration on the SES UI: http://&lt;ses hostname&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/search/query/.

  Although it’s probably meant to be experienced on the web, I’d love to read a great print version of Why’s Poignant Guide to Ruby. It’s liberally licensed, so I can run off a copy for myself. But I think a work like that deserves more. Full colour illustrations. Main text on the left-hand page, sidebars on the right. (Stick in a few cartoons, or a slice of onion, when there aren’t any sidebars.) A built-in MP3 player and headphones for the soundtrack, but made completely out of telephone wires. Whilst that might be wishing for too much, have you (ever) seen any decent print versions of the book available?

• Guide for http://www.ch-werner.de/javasqlite java wrapper library for SQlite?

  I'm working on a large computer science school project using java and SQlite. After finding out that the zentus.org wrapper errors on databases with ON DELETE and ON UPDATE clauses set, I have changed to the other wrapper found at http://www.ch-werner.de/javasqlite. However, I find the documentation lacking somewhat when trying to get an overview on how it works and how to use it, and the function descriptions are very very short, and you have to scan through every function and somewhat guess how they work and what they do. I wasn't able to find any guides on google on how to use it. My question: Does anyone know a link for a guide or tutorial for the ch-werner.de/javasqlite wrapper, or else can give me a basic code example, or give a quick overview of querying the database and the most used functions, and how to use them?

• Quick / Built-in method for detecting table change in SQL Server?

  Is there a quick and easy way of telling if a table has changed in SQL Server? (I'm using SQL Server 2005). Something like an incrementing ID somewhere that updates on each INSERT, DELETE or UPDATE that I can keep track of. I noticed there is a sys.objects.modify_date column for each table, but I don't think it's quite what I want because the docs say: Date the object was last modified by using an ALTER statement. If the object is a table or a view, modify_date also changes when a clustered index on the table or view is created or altered.

Unfortunately, the next thing I found is that making it multi-column doesn't seem nearly that simple (at least via documentation). There is a post here where someone mentions that they've done it (and even gives code), but I'm having trouble understanding what some of their code is doing.   I'm very new to flash and as3 design patterns. But I can read and write as3 quite ok, i've created small widgets with that. I've developed several web sites using php and also python. Now for a educational cd-rom project i'm working on, i've basically designed all templates (A home page, a generic page with navigation and a sidebar - kind of like a wordpress blog). I have all the data for the cdrom on word files, which i intend to place on xml files. My question is what is the best way to start a project like this? Can anyone guide me to a template or something that can be used for kickstarting this? kind of like a wordpress (without the admin)? Or am i on this all wrong? Can someone please help

• How do I get the Mac OS X 'quick look' feature to be more programmer-friendly?

  There are numerous text files that are always included in common downloads such as rails plugins: LICENSE, ChangeLog, Rakefile, etc. I know these files are plain-text, but Mac OS X refuses to acknowledge this automatically. If I hit the spacebar in Finder to activate "quick look", the icon becomes huge but the contents of the file are not shown, presumably because they have no file extension. How do I stop this madness so I can quickly look at READMEs just by hitting the spacebar? I've already got a ton of text editors installed on my mac: this question is purely about efficiency and making simple files accessible as quickly as possible.

  I am working on a feature that would allow clients pick a unique identifier (ci_name). The code below is a generic version that gets expanded to the right sql depending on the vendor. This will be used by several admins. This will not happen very frequently, but there is still a possibility that something will be added or deleted since the list was initially retrieved. I have not yet decided if I need to detect the case of a double delete, but the user name cannot be created twice - primary key constraint will object. I want to be able to detect this particular case and display something like: "you snooze - you loose." :) I would like to leverage the pk constraint instead of doing some extra sql gymnastics. So, how can I detect this case cleanly, so that it works in MS SQL 2008, Sybase, and Oracle? I hope to do better than catch a general ODBC exception and parse out the text and look for what Sybase, Oracle, and MSSQL would give me back. Oracle is a little different. We actually prepend these variables to the Oracle version of stored procedures because they are not available otherwise: Vret_val out number, Vtran_count in out number, Vmessage_count in out number, Thanks. General helpful tips and comments are welcome, except for naming convention ones ( I do not have a choice here, plus I mangled the actual names a bit).

• Copy a website and preserve the file & folder structure

  I have an old web site running on an ancient version of Oracle Portal that we need to convert to a flat-html structure. Due to damage to the server we are not able to access the administrative interface, and even if we could there is no export functionality that can work with modern software versions. It would be enough to crawl the website and have all the pages & images saved to a folder, but the file structure needs to be preserved; that is, if a page is located at http://www.oldserver.com/foo/bar/baz/mypage.html then it needs to be saved to /foo/bar/baz/mypage.html so that the various Javascript bits will continue to function. None of the web crawlers I've found have been able to do this; they all want to rename the pages (page01.html, page02.html etc) and break the folder structure. Is there any crawler out there that will recreate the site structure as it appears to a user accessing the site? It doesn't need to redo any of teh content of the pages; once rehosted the pages will all have the same names they did originally so links will continue to work.

  Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has completely transformed IT from the time it was introduced well over a decade ago. Organizations have been re-plumbing their infrastructure for reusability, efficiency and gain and succeeding with it. Best practices have emerged and people and technology have matured. We have got better at delivering on a stable platform on mission critical applications and services. Yet, there is this one secret that sets some SOA customers apart from the others. These companies grow and revolutionize their business and not just transform their IT infrastructure. The differences seem subtle for an untrained eye examining these organizations externally. And from within the company, it’s a bit like an ant sitting on an elephant, hard to differentiate between the IT trunk and business tail. What is it that some organizations do differently that makes them succeed beyond SOA? These organizations pull in business people more and more to weigh into their IT decisions. They wrench understanding process over services. They don’t settle easily when bridging business metrics and IT performance. They anguish over business requirements not translating seamlessly and quickly into IT. IT is not just an enabler but a pillar that revolutionizes their business. Okay, I’ll give it to you. These organizations layer Business Process Management (BPM) on top of their SOA. Think about lifeblood business processes in your own organizations. If you are Fedex, this would be shipping and handling. If you are Stanford Hospital, this would be patient case-management: from on-boarding through discharge and follow-up care. If you are Wells Fargo, this would be loan origination. Now think about how your SOA ties into your business process. Can you decouple your business processes from your SOA so that the two can transform and change independent of each other? Can you forecast success metrics for your business process, make the changes across the board and then look back over different periods of time to see if you are on track? Are your critical business processes entrenched in the minds of few experts in your organization or does everyone from the receptionist to your enterprise architect to your CEO understand what they can do to revolutionize it? Business Process Management is a superset of SOA. It is the process of getting your business to articulate business value and metrics and have it implemented in IT without any loss in translation. It is the act of extracting the business process from the minds of experts and IT applications in your organization and valuing them as assets for performance and gain.
