  • How can you store item data from a game?

    When I look at games such as warcraft 3, or Diablo, or basically any games that contain items in them I notice that each item is unique. They all have different stats, different graphics, different names. I took a wild guess that they don't use XML, although I know I might be wrong, but I just figured they use something that isn't easily human-editable to prevent casual hacking. How is data such as item attributes stored in a game (2d or 3d, I suppose it works the same way in both)?

    Background: I have not programmed in a while besides doing VBA and a little VB.NET. So please forgive my language use. I'm green and have a head cold. I am reading all I can now, but I have no programming circles to draw from. The information I am providing is to help guide you to what I am looking for. I am not confident I can ask the question properly. Story: I have four different projects that I am starting. Obviously I won't be working on all at the same time however they each will have similar needs and be inter related. They are as follows: Desktop Environment/System User Interface - basically a product that runs on major computers via mono or .net that unifies the look and functions. In the context of the up coming question it would be able to directly access data of various types. It would work in tandum with my office suite, system manager, and network application framework. Office Suite - technically it would not be a suite since I will be doing it from one interfacel except for the Communications Application. As far as the question, it will need to be able to link to various data sources for storing files and using, manipulating, and presenting information. System Manager - an intellegent system to manage and administer the entire network and all equipment. As far as the question, needs to be able to access data for archiving and and for accessing it's own settings stored in various formats, sql or xml. Network Application Framework - A complete system that can be used for ERP, CRM, CMS, Errata, File Management, and so on. As to the question to be able to access it's own or interlink with existing applications. Requirement: C#, Simplifies and reduces coding, use the same code to access diffent databases(ie MySQL, MS SQL, ACCESS, XML, ...), Mono would be nice but not a must, Question: What librarys, frameworks, or other options would be able to help with this? Is there a good resource to guide me? I don't want arguing over what is best, just information to help me further understand and make an educated decision.

  • Temp file folder full, but clearing it out doesn't seem to work

    I got this error on our build server: MSB6003: The specified task executable could not be run. MSB5003: Failed to create a temporary file. Temporary files folder is full or its path is incorrect. The directory name is invalid. [C:\Users\swdev_build\bamboo-agent-home\xml-data\build-dir\XXXX-ZZZZZZ-JOB1\build.xml] This was when trying to run and msbuild task to run our test suite. Using the power of google it seemed that this should be a problem with the %TEMP% folder running out of tmp file names apparently because a 4 digit hex name is used (for a total of 65535 temporary files). The problem is that the error persist, even after going into the %TEMP% folder and deleting everything before rebooting the machine. Does anyone know how to fix the issue and more importantly how to prevent it from happening again? What is the preferred way of cleaning up this temp files? Make it a part of the build process? Update: Actually I cleared the TEMP folder of the only local user, but since the build server is running as the SYSTEM user, it probably has some temp folder somewhere else.

  • Mount Return Code for CIFS mount

    When I run the following command (as root or via sudo) from a bash script I get an exit status (or return code in mount man page parlance) of 1: mount -v -t cifs //nasbox/volume /tmpdir/ --verbose -o credentials=/root/cifsid & /tmp/mylog It outputs the following into the myflog file: parsing options: rw,credentials=/root/cifsid mount.cifs kernel mount options unc=//nasbox\volume,ip=192.168.1.1,user=root,pass=xxxx,ver=1,rw,credentials=/root/cifsid It mounts the volume fine but returns the exit code (from the mount man page): 1 Incorrect invocation or permissions The standard Linux log files don't contain any error information. Hence, all seems to go well but I get an exit code of 1 instead of 0. Any ideas? The -v and --verbose options are just there for debugging this problem.

  • Bind ADFS 2.0 service to a specific IP address

    I have one server with ADFS-2.0 and a few websites on it. One of the websites is Dynamics CRM which listens on a specific IP address on port 443. Dynamics CRM provides a metadata file for configuration purposes which could be used to configure a relaying party trust with ADFS. It is accessible with the URL https://auth.contoso.com/FederationMetadata/2007-06/federationmetadata.xml The problem is that ADFS-2.0 installs a service which registers following urlacl https://+:443/FederationMetadata/2007-06/ This means the result of accessing the URL https://auth.contoso.com/FederationMetadata/2007-06/federationmetadata.xml is the metadata file of ADFS, not the one of Dynamics CRM. I've tried to delete the default urlacl and added (one of them at a time) https://192.168.1.2:443/FederationMetadata/2007-06/ https://adfs.mydomain.com:443/FederationMetadata/2007-06/ but neither of them worked. Instead the ADFS-service failed to startup complete. Is there any way to bind this service to a IP address? At the moment I see only two alternatives Bind the service to a non standard port. This leads to problems because this means that also the ADFS website has to use a non-standard HTTPS-port. Install ADFS-2.0 on a different server (this is my favorite alternative - however it is not possible in every situation...)

    What is a "line" object in Inkscape? Drawing lines in Inkscape is by using the tool "Draw Bezier curves and straight lines (Shift+F6)". This creates objects of another type, "path". Using Inkscape: is there a way to convert an object of type "line" into an object of the more general type "path"? I have imported a drawing (mostly lines, rectangles and text) that has been through Adobe Illustrator: originally made in Inkscape, imported into Illustrator, edited, saved from Illustrator as SVG, imported into Inkscape. Sample from the imported SVG file: <path id="path5855" stroke="#000000" d=" M320.198,275.935" /> <line fill="none" stroke="#000000" x1="348.553" y1="45.097" x2="348.553" y2="185.346" id="line3368" /> Update 1: I have inspected the original XML (SVG) file from 2006 and it does not contain any "line" XML tags.     I'm trying to get awstats to parse the postfix mail log, but it drops allmost all entries with messages like: Corrupted record (date 20091204042837 lower than 20091211065829-20000): 2009-12-04 04:28:37 root root localhost 127.0.0.1 SMTP - 1 17480 Few more are dropped with an invalid LogFormat: Corrupted record line 24 (record format does not match LogFormat parameter): 2009-11-16 04: 28:22 root root localhost 127.0.0.1 SMTP - 14755 My conf LogFormat="%time2 %email %email_r %host %host_r %method %url %code %bytesd" I believe matches the log format (and besides is the log format I've seen everywhere for awstats mail parsing). Besides, is the same entry format as all the other entries in the mail log. Whatever is left is dropped too: Dropped record (host localhost and 127.0.0.1 not qualified by SkipHosts): 2009-12-07 04:28:36 root root localhost 127.0.0.1 SMTP - 1 17152 I added SkipHosts="" to the .conf file but to no avail. I feel like awstats really has some personal quarrel with me today.

  • When tab groups are loaded, Firefox becomes unresponsible for minutes (Unresponsive script)

    I have several tab groups (~ 20) in Firefox. I can start the browser without any problems. However, as soon as I … click at the "Group tabs" icon in the toolbar, or right-click on a tab and hover over "Move to tab group", … Firefox becomes unresponsible/freezes for a rather long time (more than 2 minutes). It seems to load all tab groups (it doesn't load all the pages! I deactivated this in the settings). While this is happening, I get several "Unresponsive script" warnings, like: Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/tabbox.xml:0 (most of the time) Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/tabbox.xml:418 Script: chrome://browser/content/tabview.js:400 Script: chrome://browser/content/tabview.js:522 Script: resource://modules/sessionstore/SessionStore.jsm:3578 Script: resource:///components/PageThumbsProtocol.js:79 (rare) Script: resource://gre/modules/XPCOMUtils.jsm:323 (rare) (probably also other warnings, didn't record them yet, though) On all of these I click "Continue". After ~ 2-3 minutes and 3-5 warnings, I can use Firefox again. Now I can switch tab groups without any problems. Why is this happening? How can I prevent the long loading time? Is there maybe a about:config setting I could try? I started Firefox in Safe Mode (= without any add-ons): the problem still exists.

    I'm trying to set up Jenkins in Tomcat7 on Ubuntu. I installed Tomcat7 and deployed jenkins.war, and I now see the Jenkins home page at http://myhost:8080/jenkins, but it's attempting to create the Jenkins directory at /usr/share/tomcat7/.jenkins, which it can't for security reasons. I've already created /srv/jenkins and given the tomcat7 group permissions, and want to set JENKINS_HOME to that path. I've tried adding it to the tomcat configuration in /etc/tomcat7/server.xml: <GlobalNamingResources> <Environment name="JENKINS_HOME" value="/srv/jenkins" type="java.lang.String" override="false"/> <!-- Default settings --> And I've also tried adding it to the automatically created context file in ROOT/META-INF/context.xml (there is no $CATALINA_HOME/conf as far as I can tell). <Context path="/" antiResourceLocking="false" > <Environment name="JENKINS_HOME" value="/srv/jenkins/" type="java.lang.String"/> </Context> But even after restarting tomcat7 I still get the same result (trying to use /usr/share/tomcat7/.jenkins).   • Moving from WDS to MDT + WDS - Prestaged Computer Name

    We previously used just WDS to deploy our images. WDS was setup to request approval for new machines. We used the "Name and Approve" option to name the machines as we added them. If it was pre-existing, it would just use the existing computer name from AD. Then in our unattend.xml file we had Computername=%MACHINENAME%. This picked up the name we gave it during approval and set the computer name accordingly. We are now implementing MDT to manage our images and drivers. But upon testing, we noticed it would assign random computer names. I went into the Unattend.xml for the deploy task sequence and added that value under Specialize amd64_Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup_neutral Computername=%MACHINENAME%. But when we try applying the image, it errors out at that point of the install. How can an MDT deployment be configured to leverage the pre-staged name? Some additional info: Error message during the imaging process: Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]. The settings specified in the answer file cannot be applied.     I've turned on dynamic content compression in IIS 7, but Fiddler is showing that my dynamic pages are still being served without content-encoding: gzip. Static content compression is working fine on the same servers. Not sure if it matters but most of the dynamic pages are coldfusion pages and we're also using the IIS URL rewriting module.   • Jetty - 401 Unauthorized when using basic authentication

    I am running SOLR on jetty in Ubuntu (a bitnami VM, if that helps) and am trying to lock down access to both the admin pages and the update/delete/etc. pages using basic authentication. When I attempt to connect to the admin console via a web browser I am prompted for a user name and password, but the username and password I use simply does not work. For test purposes I am using foo:bar as the credentials, but I receive a '401 Unauthorized' response.   • IIS URL Rewrite HTTP to HTTPS with Port

    My website has two bindings: 1000 and 1443 (port 80/443 are in use by another website on the same IIS instance). Port 1000 is HTTP, port 1443 is HTTPS. What I want to do is redirect any incoming request using "htt p://server:1000" to "htt ps://server:1443". I'm playing around with IIS 7 rewrite module 2.0 but I'm banging my head against the wall. Any insight is appreciated! BTW the rewrite configuration below works great with a site that has an HTTP binding on port 80 and HTTPS binding on port 443, but it doesn't work with my ports. P.S. My URLs intentionally have spaces because the 'spam prevention mechanism' kicked in. For some reason google login doesn't work anymore so I had to create an OpenID account (No Script could be the culprit).   • Solr error; JNDI not configured for solr; Anybody know what this means?

    I am installing solr on my VPS (Ubuntu 9.10) via PuTTY. First, I thought about installing Solr with Tomcat, but then after installing tomcat, I changed my mind and went for the Jetty which comes with Solr. Now that I have setup everything on my Server, and try to start the "start.jar" file, I get some errors...
