• Getting Ethernet driver to crippled machine

  The reply at How do I install drivers for the Atheros AR8161 Ethernet controller? probably helps me. I have a Toshiba S855, bought yesterday. lspci -vv | grep Atheros command from the terminal shows me I have the AR8161 Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 10) However the answer sudo apt-get install ... requires an internet connection. How can I, using another machine, capture the necessary information on that other machine to copy across to the crippled machine, and then how do I build from there. Thanks in anticipation

• Tiled/TMX C++ Library/Parser

  Where can I find an easy to use and up to date C++ parser/library for the .tmx map format (used by the Tiled Map Editor) ? EDIT: David's comment, 'Unless you want to build your game around the format of the parser..', got me thinking... So I have downloaded pugixml, which is an easy to use xml-parser with very straightforward documentation. Together with the spec for the TMX Map Format, I think I'll give it a try myself. I'll probably compare with Cocos2d-x's CCTMXTiledMap at some point.

• Smartassembly 5: it lives! Early Access builds now available

  I'm pleased to announce that, late last week, we put out the first early access build for Smartassembly 5, Red Gate's fantastic code protection and error reporting tool, which we acquired last September. You can download it via: http://www.red-gate.com/messageboard/viewforum.php?f=116 It's obviously pretty early days, so please do not try to use this to protect a production application, but we've already done a lot of work in some key areas: We're simplifying and streamlining the licensing model (you won't see this yet, but a lot of the work on this has already been done). We've improved usability of the product, with a better menu, reordering of project settings, and better defaults. We've also fixed a load of bugs, which I'll let Alex blog about in more detail. On a slightly more trivial level, the curly braces are also no more. Over the coming weeks, we'll be adding more improvements, and starting usability tests. • Trade off: Lower the number of URLs in sitemap from 43k to 23k or update the sitemap.xml only weekly basis

  we rewrote the sitemap creation process. Now the sitemap contains 43.000 URLs. 20k more than before. We have daily changing in URLs. The script that is creating the complete sitemap takes more than 30h. So we can not build it every day. Lets say that increasing the speed of the script is not possible. What should I do? A: Stay with the 23k URLs and update it daily B: Increase number of URLs to 43k and update it weekly

• How to handle mutiple API calls using javascript/jquery

  I need to build a service that will call multiple API's at the same time and then output the results on the page (Think of how a price comparison site works for example). The idea being that as each API call completes the results are sent to the browser immediately and the page would get progressively bigger until all process are complete. Because these API calls may take several seconds each to return I would like to do this via javascript/jquery in order to create a better user experience. I have never done anything like this before using javascript/jquery so I was wondering if there was any frameworks/advice that anyone would be willing to share.

  In an op-ed piece in this months SD Times, I make the argument that software development productivity tools have evolved over the years to become more mainstream. I make the case that while some developers shun tools, in reality they take for granted the tools they are using today that were not available 10 years or so ago, or were not that mature. For example today we use some tools without even thinking such as: SCM, build management, standards enforcement, ORM and UI components. • ADF Mobile Application in the Apple AppStore

  Hi, everyone: I would like to announce that there is now an iPhone App in the Apple AppStore that's built using Oracle ADF Mobile.  This app is the Hudson Mobile Monitor application for the iPhone, which allows you to monitor build status for the Hudson Continuous Integration server.  By default it points to the production instance of the Hudson CI server hosted at Oracle.  One of the key goals for ADF Mobile in general is to ensure an application built using ADF Mobile is compliant with Apple iOS SDK terms.  We designed the framework to ensure applications can go through the approval process - of course there are still things that can be done which would cause issues during the approval process, and we will be publishing more best practices in the coming articles. • Is there a better approach in migrating SIT SVN to UAT SVN?

  In web development, given a same piece of source code, and being deploy to SIT (system integration testing) SVN/WAS and UAT (user acceptance testing) SVN/WAS. Please take note that I am using Jenkins to build everything. I have already ensured the transition from SIT SVN to UAT SVN are sync by doing manual diff on the 2 directory. Usually I will ensure the SIT WAS is working fine then only deploy to UAT WAS. But now there is a problem show up in UAT WAS and it is working fine in SIT WAS. I am suspecting there is a migration fault happened between SIT SVN to UAT SVN. In such a given scenario, is there a better approach to handle this problem?

  I am trying to build a remote control application to control media on my Ubuntu. Does anyone know a way in order to accomplish this. The media keys in particular. Thank you. EIDT: I have tried using XTE, but is seems python in truncating the input or there is a limit or something which means that you can't do Ctrl + Key key presses, which wont suit my needs. I also tried uinput, but alas you need to run it as root, which also will not quite my needs. Now I am looking at EVDEV which seems promicing, that is if I can get it working.

• front usb wont mount harddrives, internal usb ports do

  I have noticed something in my new build, i am using Ubuntu desktop newest version my motherboard is the asus f1a75-m pro R2.0 with the usb ports in the back all my NTFS hard disks or usb sticks work fine, but then.. when i put them in the front usb ports of my chassis (silverstone milo ml-03) they wont mount... I have 2 usb 3.0 ports in front of the case connected with a internal usb 3.0 header. But i verified that the usb 3.0 ports on the back do mount the harddisk so it has nothing to do with usb 3.0 i think. The strange thing is, my mouse works fine on the front usb ports. Every usb hardware piece seems to work except if it has any memory inside it :( What seems to be the problem?

• Session Report - Java on the Raspberry Pi

  On mid-day Wednesday, the always colorful Oracle Evangelist Simon Ritter demonstrated Java on the Raspberry Pi at his session, “Do You Like Coffee with Your Dessert?”. The Raspberry Pi consists of a credit card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK with the intention of stimulating the teaching of basic computer science in schools. “I don't think there is a single feature that makes the Raspberry Pi significant,” observed Ritter, “but a combination of things really makes it stand out. First, it's $35 for what is effectively a completely usable computer. You do have to add a power supply, SD card for storage and maybe a screen, keyboard and mouse, but this is still way cheaper than a typical PC. The choice of an ARM (Advanced RISC Machine and Acorn RISC Machine) processor is noteworthy, because it avoids problems like cooling (no heat sink or fan) and can use a USB power brick. When you add in the enormous community support, it offers a great platform for teaching everyone about computing.”Some 200 enthusiastic attendees were present at the session which had the feel of Simon Ritter sharing a fun toy with friends. The main point of the session was to show what Oracle was doing to support Java on the Raspberry Pi in a way that is entertaining and fun. Ritter pointed out that, in addition to being great for teaching, it’s an excellent introduction to the ARM architecture, and runs well with Java and will get better once it has official hard float support. The possibilities are vast.Ritter explained that the Raspberry Pi Project started in 2006 with the goal of devising a computer to inspire children; it drew inspiration from the BBC Micro literacy project of 1981 that produced a series of microcomputers created by the Acorn Computer company. It was officially launched on February 29, 2012, with a first production of 10,000 boards. There were 100,000 pre-orders in one day; currently about 4,000 boards are produced a day. So I was pretty curious and want to read it all but honestly, I don't understand it at all.. I'm really not that highly intellectual being.. So this should be the reason why I can't understand it, but I am eager to learn.. I'm currently reading volume 1 about fundamental algo.. So is there any books out there that are friendly to novice/slow people like me? So I can build up myself and hopefully in the future I can read Knuth's book at ease..

• Can I buy a .CA if I have no affiliation with Canada?

  Well, the title says it all. It seems by CIRA (http://www.cira.ca/home-en/?lang=en) that I cannot, but the website doesn't make it explicitly clear how they check or anything like that... I have a domain name that I'd love to register for a business that will likely start in the US (where I'm based), but hopefully will grow globally (probably including Canada), but I want to build a brand around the domain name, and I do not want to get slammed by Canada yanking the domain name back if they discover I have no connection there. I only have experience with .com and .us domain names, so this is new territory for me. Any advice?

• Getting started with ClojureScript and Google Closure

  I would like to investigate whether ClojureScript, with the associated Google Closure library is a reasonable tool to build modern, in-browser, Javascript applications. My current Javascript stack consists of jQuery, Backbone and RequireJS with the possible additions of some widgets libraries like jQueryUI or KendoUI. So it will be quite a big leap (I already know how to work in Clojure, although I have little experience). What is a good roadmap to do so? Should I learn the Google Closure library first, or can I grasp it together with ClojureScript? One thing I am concerned about is the overall application structure. Backbone is rather opinionated on how to organize your application. I am not sure whether Google Closure also includes some components to help with the design of the application. And, if this is the case, I do not know how to tell whether this structure will port to ClojureScript or a ClojureScript application will require a different organization anyway, and only use - say - the widgets and DOM manipulation features of Closure.

• Libnoise producing completely random noise

  I am using libnoise in C++ taken and I have some problems with getting coherent noise. I mean, the noise produced now are completely random and it doesn't look like a noise. Here's a to the image produced by my game. I am diving the map into several chunks, but I can't seem to find any problem doing that since libnoise supports tileable noise. The code can be found below. Every chunk is 8x8 tiles large. Every tile is 64x64 pixels. I am also providing a link to download the entire project. It was made in Visual Studio 2013.
