• Advice on a DB that can be uploaded to a website by a smart client for collecting survey feedback

  Hello, I'm hoping you can help. I'm looking for a zero config multi-user datbase that my winforms application can easily upload to a webserver folder (together with 1 or 2 classic asp pages) and am looking for some suggestions/recommendations. The idea is that the database will be used to collect feedback entered by people filling in the asp pages. The pages will write to the database using javascript. The database will subsequently be downloaded again for processing once the responses are in. In Summary: It will mostly run in MS Windows environments. I have a modest budget for this and do not mind paying for such a database. No runtime licensing costs. Should be xcopy - Once uploaded to a website folder it should be operational. It should not have a dotnet CLR dependency. It should support a resonable level of concurrent access. Average respondent count would be around 20-30 but one never knows. Should be a reasonable size so that uploads/downloads to and from the site will be reasonably fast. Would appreciate your suggestions/comments Many thanks Abz To clarify - this is a desktop commercial application for feedback management in a vertical market. It uses SQL Server as the backing store. The application currently provides feedback management from email and paper feedback. I now want to add web feedback capability. Getting users to to make their SQL servers accessible to a website is not at option at this time as I am want to make getting up and running as painless as possible. I intend to release a web based implementation of the software in the near future but for now am looking at the above as a pragmatic way to provide web based feedback collection.

So I narrowed down the problem to the "working directory" of the import statement. However, I do not wish to add 'application.myapp.modules.' in every import statement inside the package since it would be impractical and hard to edit if someone decides to rename the app later on. How do I make the import work smoothly? NOTE: It is necessary for me to put the numpy package in the app to ensure ease of deployment.

• Problem with DSL and Business Rules creation in Drools

  Hi, I am using Eclipse with the Drools plugin to create rules. I want to create business rules and main aim is to try and provide the user a set of options which he can use to create rules. For eg:If an Apple can have only 3 colors: I want to provide an option like a drop down so that the user can know before hand which are the options he can use in his rules. Is it possible? I am creating a dsl but unable to still provide the above functionality for a business rule. I am having an error implementing a basic dsl also. • Is there a Post-Build Extensible Installer System

  We have a product that we need to create an installer for. It has a number of components which can be installed or not as the situation demands. When we ship our installation package, we want to be able to have that include any number of additional components to be installed. For example, Foo Manager Pro contains: Foo Manager Console Foo Manager Database Foo Manager Services That might be shipped as something like: FooManagerInstaller.exe FMPConsole.pkg FMPDatabase.pkg FMPServices.pkg A package might consist of something like: Manifest Files to be deployed Additional scripts to be executed (eg find file foo.config, do some XML Manipulation) If a client wants to add custom skins and a series of plugins as part of the install, they create their own packages: FMPConsoleSkins.pkg ClientWebservices.pkg If that client then ships it to someone else who wants to add more customisation - they can do so in the same way. We can build this from scratch - but wanted to check if this sort of install system already exists. We already have a set of NAnt scripts which do something not too far from this. But they're difficult to maintain, and quite complex. They don't offer any of the 'niceties' that we'd expect from an installer (like tracking deployed files and removing them if the install fails). We've been looking a little bit at NSIS and building MSIs using WiX, but it's not clear that these can offer us the capability for downstream to provide additional packages, without inventing our own installer language.

But CXF throws SoapFault when request is not corresponding with schema. I want to send to the client SoapMessage instead of SoapFault, that's why I added outFaultInterceptors. My question is how to transform SoapFault to SoapMessage? I've made few tries but I don't know how to implement outFaultInterceptor.

This works great on servers on the same domain, but if I need to run this script on a remote server, I need to specify credentials. • What is causing my HTTP server to fail with "exit status -1073741819"?

  As an exercise I created a small HTTP server that generates random game mechanics, similar to this one. I wrote it on a Windows 7 (32-bit) system and it works flawlessly. However, when I run it on my home machine, Windows 7 (64-bit), it always fails with the same message: exit status -1073741819. I haven't managed to find anything on the web which references that status code, so I don't know how important it is. • CSS styles are not applied to elements added to JavaFX component tree

  I have applied CSS style to JavaFX components and it looks like everything is working fine except one situation: when I add JavaFX components to component tree on-the-fly their CSS styles are not applied. I noticed that: Components added dynamically look just like style information was not applied. If you set their style in JavaFX code then everything works fine. After changing stylesheets property (so that it points to another valid stylesheet) the objects already added render properly. Does anyone know the solution to this problem? I could of course put all the properties into JavaFX code or provide another stylesheet (for every existing stylesheed) that would contain the same data and change stylesheet right after adding any component, but I would like to find some elegant solution.   Hi All, My basic question is how to filter spam and dirty words in a comment post system under python (django). I have a collection of phrases (approximately 3000 phrases) to be filtered. Question (1), are there any existing open source python (or django) package/module/plugin which can handle this job? I knew there was one called Akismet. But from what I understood, it will not solve my problem. Akismet is just a web service and filter the words dictionary defined by Akismet. But I have my own collection of words. Please correct me if I am wrong. Question (2), If there is no such open source package I can use, how to create my own one? The only thing I can think of it's to use regular expression and join all the word phrases with 'or' in a regular expression. but I have 3000 phrases, I think it won't work in term of performance and filter every comment post. any suggestions where should I start from? • Does Java 6 open a default port for JMX remote connections?

  My specific question has to do with JMX as used in JDK 1.6: if I am running a Java process using JRE 1.6 with com.sun.management.jmxremote in the command line, does Java pick a default port for remote JMX connections? Backstory: I am currently trying to develop a procedure to give to a customer that will enable them to connect to one of our processes via JMX from a remote machine. The goal is to facillitate their remote debugging of a situation occurring on a real-time display console. Because of their service level agreement, they are strongly motivated to capture as much data as possible and, if the situation looks too complicated to fix quickly, to restart the display console and allow it to reconnect to the server-side. I am aware the I could run jconsole on JDK 1.6 processes and jvisualvm on post-JDK 1.6.7 processes given physical access to the console. However, because of the operational requirements and people problems involved, we are strongly motivated to grab the data that we need remotely and get them up and running again. EDIT: I am aware of the command line port property com.sun.management.jmxremote.port=portNum The question that I am trying to answer is, if you do not set that property at the command line, does Java pick another port for remote monitoring? If so, how could you determine what it might be?

• Ignore case in Python strings

  What is the easiest way to compare strings in Python, ignoring case? Of course one can do (str1.lower() <= str2.lower()), etc., but this created two additional temporary strings (with the obvious alloc/g-c overheads). I guess I'm looking for an equivalent to C's stricmp(). [Some more context requested, so I'll demonstrate with a trivial example:] Suppose you want to sort a looong list of strings. You simply do theList.sort(). This is O(n * log(n)) string comparisons and no memory management (since all strings and list elements are some sort of smart pointers). You are happy. Now, you want to do the same, but ignore the case (let's simplify and say all strings are ascii, so locale issues can be ignored). You can do theList.sort(key=lambda s: s.lower()), but then you cause two new allocations per comparison, plus burden the garbage-collector with the duplicated (lowered) strings. Each such memory-management noise is orders-of-magnitude slower than simple string comparison. Now, with an in-place stricmp()-like function, you do: theList.sort(cmp=stricmp) and it is as fast and as memory-friendly as theList.sort(). You are happy again. The problem is any Python-based case-insensitive comparison involves implicit string duplications, so I was expecting to find a C-based comparisons (maybe in module string). Could not find anything like that, hence the question here. (Hope this clarifies the question).

• jquery: set variable based on one class from an element that has more than one class

  Hi I'm trying to make a table who's columns and rows highlight on hover (I realise there are jquery plugins out there that will do this, but I'm trying to learn, so thought I'd have a stab at doing it for myself.) Here's what I've got so far: $('th:not(.features), td:not(.features)').hover(highlight); function highlight(){ $('th.highlightCol, td.highlightCol').removeClass('highlightCol'); var col = $(this).attr('class'); $('.' + col).addClass('highlightCol'); }; $('tr').hover(highlightRowOn, highlightRowOff); function highlightRowOn(){ $(this).children('td:not(.highlightCol)').addClass('highlightRow'); }; function highlightRowOff(){ $(this).children('td:not(.highlightCol)').removeClass('highlightRow'); }; This works fine apart from one problem: Each 'td' has a class specific to it's column (package1, package2, package3, package4). It is this that gets passed to the variable (col) to add the class 'highlightCol' to a column when one of its 'td's are hovered on. However, If you move the cursor to a new column along a highlighted row, the 'td' you land on has two classes (highlightedRow and package* ). These both get passed to the variable and as a result the new column does not receive the correct class to highlight. Is there a way for me to target just the 'package* ' class and pass that to the variable while ignoring the 'highlightedRow' class? I hope that's not too jumbled for someone to make sense of and many thanks for any help offered.

• Fixing a multi-threaded pycurl crash.

  If I run pycurl in a single thread everything works great. If I run pycurl in 2 threads python will access violate. The first thing I did was report the problem to pycurl, but the project died about 3 years ago so I'm not holding my breath. My (hackish) solution is to build a 2nd version of pycurl called "pycurl_thread" which will only be used by the 2nd thread. I downloaded the pycurl module from sourceforge and I made a total of 4 line changes. But python is still crashing. My guess is that even though this is a module with a different name (import pycurl_thread), its still sharing memory with the original module (import pycurl). How should I solve this problem? • How do I get ASP.NET login status controls to display a Log In option?

  I have the following log in status controls on the top of my master page. It displays the logged in as, manager log in, and Log out options. However, when a user is not logged in, there is nothing displayed there. When the user is NOT logged in, is there a way to display a "Login" text link that takes you to the log in page and then "disappears" once the user is logged in? Any help is appreciated. • Running an executable on network share with CustomAction with wix?

  Hello, i have created a msi-package which compresses some xml-files to a zip-file during installation. I have created a CustomAction for this purposes: <CustomAction Id="CompressMy" BinaryKey="zipEXE" ExeCommand="a -tzip &quot;[TEMPLATE_DIR]my.zip&quot; &quot;[TempSourceFolder]data.xml&quot;" Return="check" HideTarget="no" Impersonate="no" Execute="deferred" /> The installation works fine, if i try to install to a local drive, but recently a customer wanted to install [TEMPLATE_DIR] to a network drive on Windows Vista. The CustomAction fails, because of the elevated install-user hasn't mapped the network drive, even if the installer-calling user has mapped the drive. This happens also, if I try to install to an unc-path. I use 7zip for compressing. I have added it to my msi-package. I have tried to set Impersonate="yes", but then the Installations fails, if my TEMPLATE_DIR is f.e. the ProgramData-dir. Do you have any idea what i can do? I thinked about checking if TEMPLATE_DIR is a network path, but I didn't know how i can check this. Or do you have any other Ideas how I can provide a local and a network installation while using this custom action. Would be great if there are any advices, greetings, Martin

• What is the easiest way to read wav-files using Python [summary]?

  I want to use Python to access a wav-file and write its content in a form which allows me to analyze it (let's say arrays). I heard that "audiolab" is a suitable tool for that (it transforms numpy arrays into wav and vica versa). I have installed the "audiolab" but I had a problem with the version of numpy (I could not "from numpy.testing import Tester"). I had 1.1.1. version of numpy. I have installed a newer version on numpy (1.4.0).   I am having trouble getting my JSP page to load a Java class which is in a jar file. I include the package in my JSP as follows: <%@ page import="com.mypackage.fact.*" %> I deploy my web site and JSPs into Tomcat 6 as a WAR file. I include myjar.jar in that WAR in WEB-INF/lib but that doesn't work. I tried putting myjar.jar in my tomcat/lib folder, but that doesn't work either. I have bounced the server several times between changes. I have read a whole bunch of questions on here which say "put it in WEB-INF/lib" but that isn't working, so I'm asking my own question. Where do I need to put common JAR files so they get picked up by Tomcat?

• How can I execute a .sql from C#?

  For some integration tests I want to connect to the database and run a .sql file that has the schema needed for the tests to actually run, including GO statements. How can I execute the .sql file? (or is this totally the wrong way to go?) What am I doing wrong? I'm doing this with Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008, .Net 3.5SP1 and C# 3.0.

  I am trying to use MessagingToolkit to decode an image in C#/ASP. I have managed to encode a qr using this package, but when i try to decode, using the code below it comes up with 2 errors (at the bottom of the page) I believe this is because I am not getting the image correctly after uploading, but can someone point out exactly where I have gone wrong. • array or list into Oracle using cfprocparam

  I have a list of values I want to insert into a table via a stored procedure. I figured I would pass an array to oracle and loop through the array but I don't see how to pass an array into Oracle. I'd pass a list but I don't see how to work with the list to turn it into an array using PL/SQL (I'm fairly new to PL/SQL). Am I approaching this the wrong way? Using Oracle 9i and CF8. TIA! EDIT Perhaps I'm thinking about this the wrong way? I'm sure I'm not doing anything new here... I figured I'd convert the list to an associative array then loop the array because Oracle doesn't seem to work well with lists (in my limited observation). I'm trying to add a product, then add records for the management team. -- product table productName = 'foo' productDescription = 'bar' ... ... etc -- The managementteam table just has the id of the product and id of the users selected from a drop down. The user IDs are passed in via a list like "1,3,6,20" How should I go about adding the records to the management team table?

• Do you feel threatened by younger developers?

  When an opportunity for a new project in my company presented itself, I volunteered with a little bit of skepticism but a lot of excitement. I have been working with this company for 5 years on a different project in which I was a team lead for several releases. I have a consistent track record of delivering good quality projects. The new project has a team that is built from ground up and the management decided to hire new developers. The technologies used are the latest ones that are different from the previous project I had worked on (although they both are in .NET). The newer and the younger developers in the team have more experience with the latest technologies from their previous gigs. The younger developers have a lot more energy, can work 14 hours a day (they remind me of my early 20s) and live on ramen noodles. Since they are new, I feel they are obligated to show what they are made of and to prove their mettle. I feel like I am sidelined in this project and the management obviously like the younger developers as they bring more to the table. I know ageism is rampant in our field and the more I think about this, the more it makes me feel that there are very few transferable skills from one project to the other and one day you could be a team lead managing a number of developers, the next day some one you hired becomes your boss. Do you see yourself in situations like this very often? What plans do you have to make yourself valuable in a long term perspective?
