• Build Machine Configuration Recommendations?

  We have a new build machine to start using for our programming team. We are still trying to figure out how we want to organize everything to get the best configuration for building EXEs and DLLs. We are using VB6 and VB.Net 2005, and VSS2005. We were thinking of making working folders set for each project, release and support tickets. Does anyone have experience with a similar set up? What were your likes/dislikes? Any recommendations (New VSS IDs, folder configuration, setting working folder, updating/building files)?

• What was the most surprising failure of your 'Engineer's intuition'?

  Hi! This may seem as an open-ended question but I'll surely accept the most impressive and upvoted answer ;) Basically, I could describe my own case - I just fail 5 times a day with my intuition cause very frequently I can be just not up-to-the-speed with my requirements/manager/team/etc. and I just have to make code quickly - that's why proper formalization in many cases stands aside. I want to gather some experience of yours - what was the most epic failure when you did rely on you implicit reasoning/intuitive knowledge/immediate perception etc. of course everything you describe should be related to programming/computers. It's mostly just to measure the danger of using that 'it's obvious..' words. I've made it com. wiki to be properly transformed after gathering enough views count. Thank you!

• Standard way of distributing source code?

  I am relatively new to programming, and have built a few working C++ commandline programs with Xcode in Mac OS X (no dependencies on Mac-only libraries or APIs). My question is: What is the standard way of packaging and distributing the source code (and possibly compiled binaries)? i.e. Almost all Linux programs seemed to be distributed that a user simply needs to run ./configure && make && make install from the source directory. • What fields have job security?

  I can program pretty well, and I'm trying to think of a programming area that I can practice so I have a better chance of getting a job when I finish my education. I'm currently learning game development, but there are a ton of other people trying to get into game dev, so I want to find something a little more secure and sustainable to develop skills in. I've thought of things like financial systems and engineering stuff, but nothing I can think of is accessible to someone in high school. I'm trying to find something that involves physics or networking and isn't as popular a field as game dev. Does anyone have any ideas?

  For those of us that have programmed enough I’m sure we have come across many different flavours of coding standards that you can use when it comes to programming. e.g. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229042.aspx You might derive your coding standards for the current company you work for or from the original author of the code you’re working on. Coding styles are often used for specific program languages and some styles in one coding language might not be considered appropriate for others. Of course some coding standards can be applied across many different program languages. My question is do you have any good advice/links yourselves to a set of coding standards that you would recommend to others, or best practices to follow? Thank you for your time. • What should be done first: Code reviews or Unit tests?

  Hello, If a developer implements code for some module and wants to get it reviewed. What should be the order : *First unit test the module after designing test cases for the module, debugging and fixing the bugs and then give the modified code for peer code review (Pros- Code to be reviewed is 'clean' to a good extent. Reduces some avoidable review comments and rework. Cons- Developer might spend large time debugging/fixing a bug which could have pointed/anticipated in peer code reviews) Or *First do the code review with peers and then go for unit testing. What are your thoughts/experience on this? I believe this approach for unit testing, code reviewing should be programming language agnostic, but it would be interesting to know otherwise(if applicable) with specific examples. -AD

• xmlCtxtGetLastError - Iphone

  Hi, I have been programming with NSXMLParser for quite a while and lately, I came out with this error. The strangiest thing is that it only happens in debug mode. Once I load the App in Simulator and run it from Simulator (without Xcode involved), it runs fine. The code is very straight foward, it is a simple XML parsing whose contents were loaded from the web in a separated thread. Does anybody have alredy encoutered that error?? Thanks in advance.

• Get highest frequency terms from Lucene index

  Hello! i need to extract terms with highest frequencies from several lucene indexes, to use them for some semantic analysis. So, I want to get maybe top 30 most occuring terms(still did not decide on threshold, i will analyze results) and their per-index counts. I am aware that I might lose some precision because of potentionally dropped duplicates, but for now, lets say i am ok with that. So for the proposed solutions, (needless to say maybe) speed is not important, since I would do static analysis, I would put accent on simplicity of implementation because im not so skilled with Lucene (not the programming guru too :/ ) and cant wrap my mind around many concepts of it.. I can not find any code samples from something similar, so all concrete advices (code, pseudocode, links to code samples...) I will apretiate very much!!! Thank you!

• How do you compile an OpenGL program on Ubuntu?

  I'm a Ubuntu user who is interested in learning OpenGL. I found a page with some samples on it: http://www.opengl.org/resources/code/samples/glut_examples/examples/examples.html but when I try to compile the first one using: cc -o abgr abgr.c -lglut -lGLU -lGL -lXmu -lXext -lX11 -lm I get an error message saying: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXmu collect2: ld returned 1 exit status What is "lXmu"? How do I get this to compile? I'm 15 years old and new to computer programming. Thanks!

• Can I add an additional eula/tos inside my app on top of the iphone app store agreement

  I have an app that allows users to generate and publish content. I would like to possibly be able to use the content they publish/create to make derivative works, ie books etc (similar to what icanhazcheeseburger has done.) If I were to put an opt in alert to ask the user whether or not they would like to be a part of this, would this violate the iphone sdk? I know this is not programming question so I'm not sure if this is a fair question, but I thought I heard something like you can't add a eula you have to abide by whatever apple dictates in their app store agreement. Also if you have suggestions on different ways to approach getting users to agree to this I'm all ears, but yes that is kind of subjective. Thanks folks, Nick

• Give me a practical use-case of Multi-set

  I would like to know a few practical use-cases (if they are not related/tied to any programming language it will be better).I can associate Sets, Lists and Maps to practical use cases. For example if you wanted a glossary of a book where terms that you want are listed alphabetically and a location/page number is the value, you would use the collection TreeMap(OrderedMap which is a Map) Somehow, I can't associate MultiSets with any "practical" usecase. Does someone know of any uses? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiset does not tell me enough :) PS: If you guys think this should be community-wiki'ed it is okay. The only reason I did not do it was "There is a clear objective way to answer this question".

• sproutcore or cappucino for web app development?

  I recently found out about the sproutcore and capuccino frameworks for web app development as proper MVC approach to creating Desktop-like applications. As far as I could understand, the main difference between the two frameworks is that Cappucino abstracts away the HTML+CSS+Javascript to Objective-J - a new programming language developed be the creators of Capuccino that adds OO capabilities to Javascript, whereas Sproutcore uses HTML5,CSS,Javascript. After lots of pondering, I thought it's probably best to go with technologies we know, so I downloaded the Sproutcore tools and did the tutorials, and I have to say I was very impressed. Just the kind of thing I was looking for, for organizing a complex web app. However, I just stumbled across the following link: http://charlesjolley.sys-con.com/node/1341228 in which Charles Jolley (the creator of Sproutcore) syas that he's tired of waiting for the HTML5 and ECMAScript5 specs to get finalized, and announces that from version 1.1 onwards they will be switching to Objective-J ! So now the question is - what will actually differentiate Sproutcore and Capuccino - and which one should I choose now? Kind Regards Swami

• How to use NSTableView's selectedRowIndexes?

  Hi guys, I'm just learning some basic programming in Objective C and Cocoa. I'm trying to get some data from NSTableView. Based on what I read in one tutorial, I wrote this: NSArray * items = [[itemsTableView selectedRowEnumerator] allObjects]; But then I learned that selectedRowEnumerator was deprecated already in 10.3 Panther and that I should use selectedRowIndexes. The problem is, I didn't find how to actually use the returned NSIndexSet to achieve the same result as with code written above. So, If anyone could give me a tip, I would be very grateful. Thanks.

• Python os.path.join

  Hello, I am trying to learn python and am making a program that will output a script. I want to use os.path.join but am pretty confused (I know I am very bad at scripting/programming) See, according to the docs ( http://docs.python.org/library/os.path.html ) if I say os.path.join('c:', 'sourcedir') I get C:sourcedir as it's output. According to the docs, this is normal (right?) But when I use the copytree command, Python will output it the desired way, for example import shutil src = os.path.join('c:', 'src') dst = os.path.join('c':', 'dst') shutil.copytree(src, dst) Here is the error code I get WindowsError: [Error 3] The system cannot find the path specified: 'C:src/.' If I wrap the os.path.join with os.path.normpath I get the same error If this os.path.join can't be used this way, then I am confused as to its purpose According to the pages suggested by Stack Overflow, slashes should not be used in join--that is correct I assume? • Addressing "Access Denied" Exception with WMI Calls

  I'm getting an exception with a message of "Access Denied" when executing against a WMI request. Some WMI requests appear to require higher security privileges than others. Ultimately my goal is to monitor process launches within the system and log. Regardless if there is a better approach, its now become a vendetta in getting this WMI approach to work. I've attempted the code at Security Tools - WMI Programming Using C#.Net and still receive the exception. If you copy the code found in the blog entry you can reproduce my issue. Another post on a similar topic can be found at link text but again, try the code and you'll the see the same security exception. How do I permit my code to execute these WMI requests? I'm running on Windows 7 Pro and VS 2010 in a new C# command line project.

• Button Application- iPhone Application

  I am a meganoob in iPhone Application programming. All I want to do is make an application with a single button. When you press the button, it plays an audio file. The button is just two images, one for the normal state and one for the pressed state. • Jagged Array Dimensions

  I'm using jagged arrays and have a bit of a problem (or at least I think I do). The size of these arrays are determined by how many rows are returned in a database, so it is very variable. The only solution I have is to set the dimensions of the array to be very huge, but this seems ... just not the best way to do things. int[][] hulkSmash = new int[10][]; hulkSmash[0] = new int[2] {1,2}; How can I work with jagged arrays without setting the dimensions, or is this just a fact of life with C# programming??

• Drawing individual pixels with iphone sdk.

  Hi, I've been trying to figure out how to make a powder toy style game on the iPhone. My problem is how to draw pixels to the screen. From what I've read, OpenGL is better for games as it is faster/hardware accelerated, but there is no method to draw pixels directly to the screen. Apparently drawing pixels to an off-screen frame buffer is the way to go, but how do I then pass this to OpenGL? Do I use a texture? (this is assuming I have no previous knowledge of iPhone graphics programming). Thanks!

ReadyToStart Not Ready for Start I want to find the first Status that is not "OK". I have attempted this: =Match("<>""OK""", StatusRange, 0) which is supposed to return the index of the first element in the range that is NOT-EQUAL (<) to "OK" But this doesn't work, instead returning #N/A. I expect it to return 4 (index #4, in a 1-based index, representing that CheckedIn is the first non-OK element) Any ideas how to do this?

• Visual Studio 2008. MFC event wizard broken

  OK, so it's almost a programming question - The VS2008 dialog event wizard has stopped working. Double-clicking on a button in an MFC dialog project does not fire the wizard as usual and a right-click to get to the 'Add Event Handler...' shows a dialog with no message types. Further to this the MFC message mapping and virtual class listing that generally appears in the properties window (Alt + Enter) is now empty. Has anyone elese seen this and if so, how'd they fix it? I have 'repaired' my VS08 installation ... Thx++ Jerry

• Help with Event-Based Components

  I have started to look at Event-Based Components (EBCs), a programming method currently being explored by Ralf Wesphal in Germany, in particular. This is a really interesting and promising way to architect a software solution, and gets close to the age-old idea of being able to stick software components together like Lego :) A good starting point is the Channel 9 video here, and there is a fair bit of discussion in German at the Google Group on EBCs. I am however looking for more concrete examples - while the ideas look great, I am finding it hard to translate them into real code for anything more than a trivial project. Does anyone know of any good code examples (in C# preferably), or any more good sites where EBCs are discussed?

• PostScript versus PDF as an output format

  I'm currently writing a typesetting application and I'm using PSG as the backend for producing postscript files. I'm now wondering whether that choice makes sense. It seems the ReportLab Toolkit offers all the features PSG offers, and more. ReportLab outputs PDF however. Advantages PDF offers: transparancy better support for character encodings (Unicode, for example) ability to embed TrueType and even OpenType fonts hyperlinks and bookmarks Is there any reason to use Postscript instead of directly outputting to PDF? While Postscript is a full programming language as opposed to PDF, as a basic output format for documents, that doesn't seem to offer any advantage.   I just study window programming with awt. I see through several codes but I can not get concepts of JFrame, JLabel and ContentPane. I think JFrame only make outer Frame. ContentPane is container that contain JLabel that has contents(text, button, radio etc...). I don't know this is correct T.T Why I ask this is I failed combine the contents. • Knowledge for writing a compiler for Win32

  I have created an interpreter for my programming language (educational) and now I'd like to go one step further and create a compiler for it. I know that this is pretty hard work. What I already know is: I need to translate my input language to assembler A lot, isn't it? Now what I don't know is: What assembler do I need to create Win32 PE executables like, for example, Visual Studio does? What about file headers? I'd prefer not to use MASM but it seems like I'll have to. How to combine the assembler with my compiler?
