    I want to learn how to use Software Raid 10, is it possible to use VirtualBox by adding four storage images? This is my plan: 4x 100mb partitions (1 on each drive) configured as a raid 1 for /boot in ext3. Then with the remaining space on each drive, setup a software raid partition and configure it to to LVM and raid 10. In the LVM, set up a 4gb swap partition and the remaining space as the root partition ( / ) as ext3.

  • How do I limit concurrent sftp / port forwarding logins

    I have ssh set up so my users can only access sftp and port forwarding, how can I limit the number of concurrent logins on a per user basis? In my sshd_config I have UsePAM set to yes and in /etc/security/limits.conf I have: username - maxlogins 1 I also tried: username hard maxlogins 1 Neither of these works and the users can still log in multiple times.

  • How can I run a job when the server load is low?

    I have a command that runs a disk snapshot (on EC2, freezing an XFS disk and running an EBS snapshot command), which is set to run on a regular schedule as a cron job. Ideally I would like to be able to have the command delayed for a period of time if the disk is being used heavily at the moment the task is scheduled to run. I'm afraid that using nice/ionice might not have the proper effect, as I would like the script to run with high priority while it is running (i.e. wait for a good time, then finish fast). Thanks.

  • Mount "Macrium Reflect" on a partition, boot from there?

    Can Macrium's Reflect recovery CD be mounted/used with GRUB ? If the cd can be 'put' (loaded/mounted/...) in a partition, then the only disc needed would be the actual recovery disc, which could be on an external hard drive, or even on the same machine in another partition, thus allowing on to recover using only what's on the machine itself. I have WXPpro and Xubuntu8.04 double mounted, really happy with them together, use each right now to fix problems with the other when they come up. Also have a partition for the Reflect CD, but I just can't get it to load from Grub, which would be great... Thanks for any thoughts, probably someone has already done this I know !

  • Route return traffic to correct gateway depending on service

    On my office network I have two internet connections and one CentOS server running a website (HTTPS on port 443). The website should be publicly accessible through the public IP of the first internet connection (ISP-1). The other internet connection, ISP-2, id the default gateway on the network. Both internet connections have routers (the household-kind) with NAT, SPI firewalls etc. The router on ISP-2 is a Netgear WNDR3700 (aka N600) with original firmware. The problem is that the website is unreachable. Looks like incoming traffic on ISP-1 will reach the server but the returning traffic is routed through ISP-2, effectively making the site unreachable. As far as I can tell I can't do port based routing on the WNDR3700. What are my options to make this work? I've been looking at implementing an iptables / routing based solution on the server itself but haven't been able to make that work. Update: Note that the server has one network interface connecting it to both routers.

  • Can qmail-ldap replace the validrcptto file?

    We are using qmail to route incoming mail to our Domino server. However, that requires us to maintain the validrcptto with the list of all allowed email addresses. Since Domino provides an LDAP directory, does qmail-ldap provide functionnality to lookup valid rcpt to addresses in the Domino directory instead of the validrcptto file, so that we wouldn't have to maintain that extra list ? We have about 150~200 users, so is setting up qmail-ldap worth the extra mile if it can verify addresses in the LDAP directory ? If anyone has experience with qmail-ldap and its setup, I'd be glad to hear from you.

  • How to migrate KVM based VMs running in LVM setup to Vmdk images

    I am using KVM on Ubuntu Server 10.04. and Virtual Machines are running on it in LVM. I have to migrate some of them to Vmware server.How can I achieve this? I searched and came across some links but they all talked converting vmdk images to qcow or so.In this case I have OS in LVM. I also looked at man page of qemu-img and as I understand it should do what I am asking in this thread. But how exactly should I proceed in this case.Since it is not a file based image (OS running in an LVM which has filesystem in that LVM). So I am not able to understand what should I be doing to achieve the same. Can I achieve the above with snapshots of LVMs rather than shutting down the VM itself.

Should there be one non-root user with a secure username and password unqiue to the web server which everyone logs in as or should there be a username for each person. I am leaning towards a username for each person to aid in logging etc however then does the same user keep the same credentials over several servers, or should at least their password change depending on the server they are on? Should any non-root user of the system be added to the sudoers file or is it best practice to leave everyone off it and only let root perform certain tasks? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • mdadm - Recovering a 'split' RAID1 array

    I have two drives that used to be part of a single RAID1 volume but it appears that one of them went offline for some time, something I've noticed just now when I rebooted my system.   • lamp server permissions on development server

    I run a LAMP server on a ubuntu laptop I use only for development. I am not greatly concerned with security, since the server is never accessible outside the local network, and it's turned off when I'm not using it. My question is what is the simplest and 'best' way to set permissions/users/groups so that when my myself user creates, edits or writes files in the webroot, I won't need to go through and CHMOD / CHOWN everything back to the www-data user? Should I add myself to the www-data group? Or chown the webroot to www-data:myself? Or is there a best practice for this situation so I don't have to keep re-setting the ownership of these files?     I have an account on a shared server. I have jailshell access and also PhpMyAdmin. I want to run mysql commands via SSH but I'm getting an error: $ mysql -u mySqlUser -p mySqlPw Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' I can connect with PHP and phpMyAdmin, so would it be possible to call mysql from the shell and have it connect via an ip and port instead of the socket? The file /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock does not exist - maybe that is intentional, and the only thing in /etc/my.cnf is [mysqld] skip-innodb More Info I don't have access to change system settings. I did a search in /var for mysql.sock but found nothing. However, phpMyAdmin might be connecting via a socket somehow: Really it would just be great if I could connect via IP. Also tried these two syntaxes: $ mysql -u mySqlUser -p mySqlPw -h localhost $ mysql -u mySqlUser -p mySqlPw -h localhost -P 3306 Both with the same result: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

  • How to record desktop session with sound on Moblin?

    I have tried to record my desktop session with sound on a netbook running Moblin, but I can't seem to be able to record sound. xvidcap just says error accessing /dev/dsp. Are there some options I should pass to xvidcap? Should I use some other recording application? Update: I am using the latest xvidcap (1.1.7) and have read the FAQ. Unfortunately Moblin' gnome-volume-control looks nothing like what is linked to from the xvidcap FAQ; there is no way to to set or even look at the details the screenshot shows, as far as I know. alsamixer shows pulseaudio is used, if that gives anyone any clues. The device is Acer Aspire One.

  • Extract part of a image from a big image

    I have a 6 images , and each image has a certain section that i want to save as a separate image , the problem is that it has to be accurate because i am doing some animation using the sub-image so they should exactly . so I want to accurately extract a that part from each of the 6 images , i can't do it using a image editor in which i have to make the bounding box myself because it will not be accurate , is there any program that lets me do this by like defining a box using numerical values. PS: I don't want to write matlab or opencv program for this .

(http://configserver.com/cp/csf.html) Or is it unnecessary for this kind of server set-up? I have already done the usual (disable SSH login, pub-key auth, very strong passwords everywhere else etc) It was often recommended by users over at the cPanel forums - but I guess most of them are hosts there.

    I have to host an AMI in the Amazon Marketplace. i need to get the type of instance, whenever some user launches the AMI., like if its small medium or large. based on that i need to make some changes in the AMI when its created. I can do this with Amazon API call, to get the instance type, but the problem is that the instances created with the AMI will be started by other users, and i cannot use my AWS Credentials in the Amazon API. Is there any way that i can create an anonymous readonly user to make only specific type of EC2 API Calls? Or can i encrypt my EC2 API credentials, so no one can use it?

  • Connect through SSH and type in password automatically, without using a public key

    A server allows SSH connections, but not using public key authentication. It's not within my power to change this at the moment (due to technical difficulties, not organizational) but I will get on it as soon as possible! What I need now is to execute commands on the server using plain old account+password authentication from a script. That is, I need to do it in a non-interactive way. Is it possible? And how do I do it? The client which will be executing the script runs Ubuntu Server 8.04. The server runs Cygwin and OpenSSH.

  • Appropriate Network switch for small server cluster

    Need to build a small business server cluster for the purpose of crunching data. It will not host a web site that needs to be available 24/7. It does need to support servers that host Redis, a Cassandra database cluster, and a Python web server. Operating system will most likely be Centos 6.4 Other servers in the cluster should be able to communicate very fast with each other, especially the Redis server. This will probably require the use of internal IP addresses. We will need to use multi-data center replication to synchronize the Cassandra cluster with the one that we currently have hosted on the cloud Was looking into network switches and we are unsure of the appropriate specifications that we should be looking for. Does the switch need to be "managed" or can it be "unmanged"? Does the switch need to support IPv6 or just IPv4? Do we need an enterprise level Cisco switch, or can we go with something like a $200 DLink managed (or unmanaged) small business switch? Thanks so much!
