• How should I call the operation that limit a string's length?

  This is a language-agnostic question - unless you count English as a language. I've got this list of items which can have very long names. For aesthetic purposes, these names must be made shorter in some cases, adding dots (...) to indicate that the name is longer. So for example, if article.name returns this: lorem ipsum dolor sit amet I'd like to get this other output. lorem ipsum dolor ... I can program this quite easily. My question is: how should I call that shortening operation? I mean the name, not the implementation. Is there a standard English name for it?

  For our current J2EE project based on JBoss, we need to interface with a remote system using message driven beans and a JCA resource adapter provided as a RAR file by a third party. I would like to package and deploy the entire project as an EAR file to our JBoss server. Most notably, the RAR file should be embedded within the EAR file and not be deployed globally. All of this is working fine so far, but I'm not particularly happy with the way the RAR file is referenced. The jboss.xml packaged with the MDB for example, currently looks like this: <jboss> <enterprise-beans> <message-driven> <ejb-name>testBean1</ejb-name> <resource-adapter-name>test1.ear#thirdparty-1.0.rar</resource-adapter-name> </message-driven> </enterprise-beans> </jboss> While this is generally working fine, it will break when the EAR file is renamed to "test2.ear". Is there a way to reference the embedded RAR file without hard-coding the containing archive's name?

  Currently I have something like this in my JSP <c:url value="/teams/${contact.id}/${contact.name}" /> The important part of my URL is the ID, I just put the name on it for SEO purposes (just like stackoverflow.com does). I was just wondering if there is a quick and clean way to encode the name (change spaces per +, latin chars removal, etc). How could I order them? I probably have to write a many-to-many HQL query with the order-by clause? I though of passing the orderBy field name string to the query, or is there a better solution? Tables are: products, product_catalog, product_product_catalog (associative table) P.S. Using Play! Framework JPASupport for my entities.

I want something functionally equivalent to: name .. ", " .. msg .. "?" but not so ugly, in lua.   Hi there, in my iPhone application I am using simple Core Data Model with two entities (Item and Property): Item name properties Property name value item Item has one attribute (name) and one one-to-many-relationship (properties). Its inverse relationship is item. Property has two attributes the according inverse relationship. Now I want to show my data in table views on two levels. The first one lists all items; when one row is selected, a new UITableViewController is pushed onto my UINavigationController's stack. The new UITableView is supposed to show all properties (i.e. their names) of the selected item. To achieve this, I use a NSFetchedResultsController stored in an instance variable. On the first level, everything works fine when setting up the NSFetchedResultsController like this: -(NSFetchedResultsController *) fetchedResultsController { if (fetchedResultsController) return fetchedResultsController; // goal: tell the FRC to fetch all item objects. Should have found 3." return [sectionInfo numberOfObjects]; } The same implementation works fine on the first level. It's getting even weirder. I implemented some kind of UI to add properties. I create a new Property instance via Property *p = [NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:@"Property" inManagedObjectContext:self.moContext];, set up the relationships and call [self.moContext save:&error]. This seems to work, as error is still nil and the object gets saved (I can see the number of properties when logging the Item instance, see above). However, the delegate methods are not fired. This seems to me due to the possibly messed up fetchRequest(Controller). Any ideas? Did I mess up the second fetch request? Is this the right way to fetch all entities in a to-many-relationship for a particular instance at all?

  I want to create a query to list of all user defined stored procedures, excluding the ones that are system stored procedures, considering that: Checking the name like "sp_" doesn't work because there are user stored procedures that start with "sp_". Checking the property is_ms_shipped doesn't work because there are system stored procedures that have that flag = 0, for example: sp_alterdiagram (it is not MSShipped but appears under System Stored Procedures in SQL Server Management Studio). There must be a property, or a flag somewhere since you can see the "System Stored Procedures" in a separate folder in SQL 2005. Does anyone know? • problems with async jquery and loops

  I am so confused. I am trying to append portals to a page by looping through an array and calling a method I wrote called addModule(). The method gets called the right number of times (checked via an alert statement), in the correct order, but only one or two of the portals actually populate. I have a feeling its something with the loop and async, but it's easier explained with the code: moduleList = [['weather','test'],['test']]; for(i in moduleList) { $('#content').append(''); for(j in moduleList[i]) { addModule(i,moduleList[i][j]); //column,name } } function addModule(column,name) { alert('adding module ' + name); $.get('/modules/' + name.replace(' ','-') + '.php',function(data){ $('#'+column).append(data); }); } for each array in the main array, I append a new column, since that's what each sub-array is - a column of portals. Then I loop through that sub array and call addModule on that column and the name of that module (which works correctly). Something buggy happens in my addModule method that it only adds the first and last modules, or sometimes a middle one, or sometimes none at all... im so confused!

I wanted both branch2 and branch3 to alert 123 so I have something to start with. But currently this alerts branch2 and branch3 instead of 123. I have little experience with creating dynamic variables/objects can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or maybe another approach towards solving this?

If the value is an array, it goes into it with foreach and adds "." and the id of the array. So we would in the example array end up with: array ( '0' => "1.3.2", ) Then I can process those values to access the innner arrays. The problem is that the array that I'm trying to find the inner arrays of is dynamic and made of a user input. (It splits an input string where it finds + or -, and puts it in a separate nested array if it contains brackets. So if the user types a lot of brackets, there will be a lot of nested arrays.) Therefore I need to make this pattern go for 20 times down, and still it will only catch 20 nested arrays no matter what. Is there a function for that, again? Or is there a way to make it do this without my long code? Maybe make a loop make the necessary number of the foreach pattern and run it through eval()? Long answer to J. • MVC JsonResult not working with chrome?

  i want jquery to take a JsonResult from my MVC controller but it does'nt receive any data! If I put the output into a textfile and enter its link its working so I think my jQuery is fine. Then I was testing with other browsers like chrome and I saw NOTHING. The requested page was just emtpy.. no errors. Also IE seems to have problems receiving my string.. only firefox displays the string but why? public JsonResult jsonLastRequests() { List<Request> requests = new List<Request>(); while (r.Read()) { requests.Add(new Models.Request() { ID = (int)r[0], SiteID = r[1].ToString(), Lat = r[2].ToString(), City = r[4].ToString(), CreationTime = (DateTime)r[5] }); } r.Close(); return Json(requests); } I found out that also if I want to return the JSON as string its not working!
