Does anyone know if there is a way of recording things (live sport) on Sky Player using Windows Media Center. It has a built in extension for Sky Player but no record functionality.
Has anyone else tried this with any luck?
From a Windows XP command line, how do I get the time I logged into and/or out of the current machine? I'm looking for something like the UNIX last command which lists active and previous login sessions.
Thanks,
John
Hi,
I've a command for netcat which is for Linux, but I need to run it on my Windows through cmd.
The Linux command is:
nc localhost 4444 < myfile.file
and in particular I need to get the "<" to work; means I need to get it to run a file on the setting above.

As you might know sandboxing software doesn't work in 64bit Windows due to patchguard. What are the alternatives for a person looking to test untrusted / temporary software?
Edit: @Nick I'd prefer an alternative to VMs as I'm not happy with the extended startup time, the extra login sequences and the memory overhead that accompanies booting a VM solution to test something out ocassionally as a home user. Also it's another system that needs to be kept secure and up to date.
I would like to look at some log files solely via the console on a standard Windows 7 machine. The logs are created by schedulded tasks and I find it a hazzle to use VNC for this purpose.
What technology should I look at? Powershell, Cygwin via ssh or something else? The log files are written using log4Net - thus there might also be an easy way to reconfigure it to create events or something else for remote display.
Are there benefits to defragmenting the Windows registry? Or at least rewrite it in some way so as to take less space? Is there a reliable and safe tool to do this?
I recently re-installed non-English Windows XP Home SP2 to two computers. Why the computers don't start downloading software updates ? I have valid licenses and the copies have been activated successfully.
Over the years I have made several XP installations from the same media and there has been no issues earlier (i.e. the software updates have started a quite soon).
I do have the automatic software updates turned on (as I have always).
Hello, I'm trying to install Windows XP on an older computer. (note, it meets the system requirements) My problem is that it keeps rebooting during the "Registering Components" stage. What can cause this? What are some good things to look at to figure out whats happening?
I need to share data on an external drive that will be handed over to someone else, and I would like to achieve the following:
(1) protect all the files and folders from being copied/moved/deleted/cut on windows system
(2) files are browsable and media playable, but it stays inside the drive
(3) the same behavior if drive is plugged on linux system, or not accessible at all is fine too.
How can I do these without using paid software?
I have a number of scheduled tasks which simply open a web page in Windows Server 2008 R2. They used to run and end without abending, but now they open and stay open and I have to setup the task to quit them by force before their next scheduled run. I've thought about installing CURL or WGET, but is there a way to do this with R2 without going to that step?
Regards.
I want to setup another Hyper-V VM for installing Matlabs/doing some compute-intensive programming using C.
I keep thinking that Windows Server HPC 2008 is designed for this sort of work. Would I be on the right track to setup a single VM with this OS and install this software? Or is HPC more for grid/distributed computing?
Thanks
I frequently reinstall Windows from scratch because it has become to slow. I wonder if I were to uninstall every application, followed by a defrag and CCleaner job, would it be as fast as a fresh install. Does anyone know?
I use Putty to login to the remote server and then set the environment and change the path to a particular directory. Now from this dir, I need to copy a folder to my desktop which is Windows?
How can I achieve this ?
Some of my failed attempts are as follows
scp -r remote_foldername srao@my_ipaddress:C:\srao\Users\Desktop
So from the remote server which is to be copied through putty, to my_username_in_windows@ip_address:path to destination
I'm about to buy an iTouch, mainly because of the iCal. I'm a Windows user, so does anyone know if these two play well together? I'd prefer to be able to update my calendar from either the computer or iTouch and sync.
I've searched Google, but I'm sceptic so far. Any experiences, knowledge you can send my way would be appreciated (and possibly save me money).
Thanks
Michael
I am using two monitors( one from laptop and the other one). In dual monitor mode when I minimize the windows, sometimes they do not show in task bar and just disappear. so I have to use ALT+TAB to move between them.
why it happens?
Is it possible to setup one single machine with Windows 7 x64 OS and somehow make it work as if it's part of a certain domain? So domain controller would be simulated in some way? I would like to avoid VMs and make it actually work on one machine with non server OS.
Is there even a simpler way of doing it?
Why: I have to setup development environment for Sharepoint 2010 and it will make my life much easier if my machine would be part of a domain.
Hi,
I have a strange problem in my Windows 7. Sometimes web browsers (ie firefox and chrome) works sometimes don't. But ssh is always working. What could be the reason and how to fix it?
My router is Linksys WRT54GL. Web browsing via firefox in my Ubuntu is okay.
Thanks and regards!
I want to know what will be the difference and advantages using 32 and 64 bit. why does it really matter. What will it's benefit to Windows 7 users.
Thanks!
i have windows 7 x64 and ubuntu 10.04 installed on my machine. while i download at ~15 MiB/sec in ubuntu (reaches almost at an instant), it takes almost a minute or two for win7 to reach that speed while downloading -say- a film. also the connection becomes unresponsive for some time periods in win7. i experienced this in several win7 installations (x64 prof. always, same version).
My somputer stays off when power goes off. I want to change the bios setting so that it turns on aafter power is off and tehn on.
Can i change that from windows or any software
Device manager shows that device is properly installed:
High Definition Audio Device
Device type: Sound, video and game controllers
Manufacter: Microsoft
Location: Location 0 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus)
But every program trying to play sound reports that devicce is unavailable. In Windows XP it works properly.
