    Past my day job, I also have the privilege of being Vice President and Member of the Board of the OpenWonderland Foundation (Formerly Project Wonderland for ex-Sun folks). It's great to see the progress Wonderland is making as the platform-of-choice for open source collaborative 3-D virtual worlds built in Java. The upcoming and first european IE Summit in Madrid will show a number of projects and innovations for virtual and game-based learning. I also dropped Ultan a note after learning about the Gamification of Oracle Apps to see if collaborating with kids and schools is an area we can work together on to improve kids engagement and learning experiences online.   • Updated 12.04 and now Xorg is dead from NVidia drivers

    I updated (August 16) Ubuntu 12.04 today and while I admit I didn't look what was being updated, it was large enough to have had an NVidia update in it. Problem is later on when I turned on my laptop again it won't boot into a GUI, just to the terminal (which I don't really know much of how to do anything). Now I have been able to log in and type "startx" to start up the GUI and now its complaining that my NVidia driver (if I remember correctly) is listed as being version 304.(number) and the version installed/found is version 295.(number). I don't know how this happened and now I'm stuck. I have no idea how it happened and don't know how to fix. Does anyone have any ideas? I have only access to wifi internet and no idea how to log on without the GUI so getting a new NVidia package isn't something I would know how to do even...   • Ubuntu 12.04 VM goes dead unexpectedly

    I'm not a super savvy super user, so I'm not sure what to look for. I have a vm running 12.04. It runs fine, and then just dies (no ping, no ssh). When I log into vmwaresphere, I see the vm still 'UP', but the console gives me a response-less black screen. This lead me to believe that Ubuntu was going into some sort of sleep/hibernate state. I double checked the power settings and found nothing out of the ordinary, so now I'm stuck on how to fix the problem. There are 5-7 (centos-5.8 & 6) machines running on the same server/vm setup with no problems at all. thanks.

  • Reviving a dead laptop battery

    Is there any way to revive a dead laptop battery? I have a three year old Dell Latitude laptop that I've been using pretty intensively. After a year or so, the battery dropped dead - if I plug the laptop out it goes into hibernation in a matter of seconds. Probably this was because I kept working on it plugged in all the time, but back then I didn't realize what effect it could have (this was my first laptop). Currently, I'm searching for a new laptop and I was thinking if there was something I could do to get the battery back working. I've found several links (sorry, I'm a new user so I can't post them) about freezing Li-ion batteries, but the opinions seem to mixed - some say that it worked for them, some not. If you've tried the freezing technique please let me know if it works. Or if you know another way to make a dead battery work again, please share here. I've already seen this thread, but I'm not very handy with soldering. If it's the only alternative I'll try it, but there's a big chance that I'll screw it up. Thanks!

  • Is my laptop battery dead?

    Recently my laptop battery will get extremely hot (definitely hotter than it should get) when I charge it. After that I usually end up removing it once it's fully charged to let it cool down, which takes a couple hours... Question is, is my battery dead? My last battery I had that died just ended up lasting 2 - 3 minutes on battery, no weird heat issues. And is there any way to possibly fix this? Probably not but I won't be able to get a replacement anytime soon. UPDATE: A few days ago when this happened and it cooled down, assuming it was fully charged, I ran my laptop on battery, and the battery life lasted about 10 minutes and then the laptop shutdown. I then plugged it in later and charged it back up, and for a while I had a orange light blinking on my laptop - which I assumed meant the battery was dead, especially since I got 10 minutes battery life. Then today, I turned my laptop on and was surprised to see that the battery was at 20% and charging (it's been plugged in since the incident above, so it should have been fully charged when I shut it off) I let it charge up, and as usual it got pretty hot around the time it was fully charged. So I turned my laptop off and pulled the battery out to let it cool down Now the thing is, just now I tried running it on battery, and it's been going for an hour now... so maybe its not dead? (also the orange light is no longer blinking...) Thanks in advance if anyone knows whats going on, and how to fix it, if its fixable =] EDIT: Some info if it helps... my laptop is about 2 years ago, and it's an Asus K50ID. I know laptop batteries usually don't last more than a year but I'm trying to keep this one going for as long as I can.

Garbage objects are objects allocated after the starting point and deleted before the end point - in other words, "Garbage objects" is a subset of "Dead objects". But after doing some profiling sessions, I could see that sometimes the number of "Garbage objects" is by far greater than the number of "Dead objects" of the same class (for example System.String). How should I interpret this phenomenon?

  • C++ Builder 2010 Exception Dead Lock ???

    Hello Is this some kind of exception dead lock i am facing? How to avoid it ? Have a look at below line where i have TIdContext objects of connected clients stored in an objlist and at times i need to process it. But if one user is disconnected while another thread is processing the list, then for that freed TIdContext-Data object I am getting Access voilation, Ok its fine i am using try/catch but problem is that at below line there is some kind of dead lock and process hangs , if i attach a debuger it show Access voilation Again and Again and Again, and cpu coonsumption goes up because of that exception dead lock. AnsiString UserID = ((Tmyobject*) ((TIdContext*) ObjList->Objects[i])->Data)->UserID; i know i can check before accessing the object, if object is not Null, It works.. But my question is what if once in a blue moon the Data object is freed at the point when NULL check is performed and on next line when again i am accessing the object i get same dead lock ??? So how to avoid/handle this dead lock exception ?   • SQL 2008 SP1 crashing almost daily

    Hey, almost every day our new DB crashes. It is virtual server residing on same hardware as 5 other servers, two of them beeing identical MS SQL2008sp1 and two Oracle 11g's so I can pretty much rule out hardware issues. Server has dedicated local LUN, 4vCPU and 8GB memory with 2GB windows swap file. It runs 4 instances. Primary instance is limited to 5GB memory and paralelism set to 4 running on MS SQL 2008 SP1 @ Windows Server 2008 Enterprise R2 x64. Only that primary instance is crashing. After it crashes nothing can connect to it, it's even impossible to shut it down through service manager. What I found in logs is: ***Stack Dump being sent to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\LOG\SQLDump0081.txt SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process 4788 generated fatal exception c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION.   • My MacBook Pro (2011) is dead

    I connected my Sony digital camera with the MacBook and the screen turned black. I wonder why because the Sony camera was not on at the time and technically could not be accessed. So I thought it might be temporary and I turned on my camera. Well, it did not work, but my MacBook Pro has been dead since then. It will not turn on - when I hold the power button for five seconds, nothing happens. When I connect the charger cable, the green light is very dim and blinks a little (with about 20% illumination). I wonder what the problem is. I have to call Apple Care, but just so that I know, what could be wrong? Is my MacBook permanently dead? It might be under warranty but I am not sure.

  • Transfer an account from a 'dead' domain

    So - following from my previous question: How do I stop DFSR replication preventing a Domain Controller from advertising Domain Services?, I lost the FSMO DC, and my only other DC was in an unrecoverable state. I've created a new domain to continue my testing, but now have an issue which I suspect is relevant to any domain suffering a "catastrophe". I have user accounts and client PCs "on the old domain". (Actually 1 client PC and 3 accounts) I can still sign into the client PC as any of those users on the "dead" domain, because that is cached. There are (thankfully) no encrypted files in the "old" domain. What I would now like to do is migrate the full content (files, preferences, etc) from the "dead" domain to the new "live" domain for any/all user accounts, for the "old" PC. Is there anything out there which can assist me in doing so?

  • Eclipse making background video skip with almost every click of the mouse

    The problem is i like to listen to videos online (mostly or all flash video) while programming and never had any problems until i started using eclipse, now every time i do just about anything other than type, it makes the video skip/freeze really bad and is really annoying. I have never had this happen using visual studio, netbeans, or adobe flash for that matter, unless i was compiling or doing something that hogs the processor. Are there any settings that might could fix this its getting really annoying. it happens almost every time i even click "find" on the find pop-up window and it is not like it is having to search a big file or anything it is only 700 lines, with honestly only about 1/2 that have content on them. Any ideas?

  • Almost all of my programs arn't recognized anymore.

    I had a virus on my computer and was able to remove it, however, now almost all of my programs won't work. Even trying to open freecell pulls up the "select a software to run this in" window. I can't even install software anymore because after downloading a setup file and clicking on it, it too opens the "choose a program to run this in" window. I'm trying to find a way to fix without reinstalling the OS. Does anyone know a way to restore the file/files that are missing that are causing this problem without starting over?

  • snmpd dead but subsys locked

    Hi folks I have an NMS and a Client machine. I want the client to send traps to the NMS. I have been configuring the snmpd.conf file testing if i disable a process do i receive an alert or not. For the changes to reflect that were made in the conf file i restarted the snmpd daemon each time. The testing was going fine. All of a sudden when i restarted snmpd i recieved the error msg "snmpd dead but subsys locked". I googled for answer as to what it actually meant and found out that when a service is started a logfile is created in the /var/lock/subsys. Sometimes if the service is not stopped properly or whatever the logfile remains created. Though i started/stopped the snmpd service properly it didnt go away so i removed the file manually (via rm cmd). when i checked the status the error "snmpd dead but subsys locked" was gone. On my NMS i recieved the alert of snmpd coldstart. i started the snmpd service everything goes fine! BUT after 5 mins again i recieve the same error message and this keeps on happening..what do i need to do now?

  • SSD seems dead after wakeup from Windows Sleep, BIOS stalls but doesn't find it anymore

    The morning, the following scary scenario happened: I woke up my Windows system Typed in my username and got an error (something like "could not load security xxx", but unsure of exact wording) System auto-restarted after cliking OK It didn't boot up anymore to the SSD with Windows 7 OS (I have another disk I can boot to, but that doesn't see the disk either). Obviously, this happened right after I instantiated a backup procedure, which hasn't succeeded either. The BIOS can't find the drive when I connect to SATA. And it can't find the drive when I connect it to SAS. I have a Dell Workstation T7400, most recent BIOS (version A06), version of SAS Host Bus Adapter BIOS (HBA) is MPTBIOS 6.14.10.00 (2007.09.29) from LSI Logic Corp. Other findings: When connecting to SATA, the DELL Logo screen stays really long (5 minutes) and then at the end of POST it says that a drive is not found When connecting to SAS, the SAS HBA initializing phase takes long (2 minutes, against normally 15 seconds) When running Dell Diagnostics, it doesn't finish and gives the error Exception occurred in module MPCACHE.MDM file "IOAPICSP.ASM" line 1645. I contacted Dell. On their advice I tried different slots and different cables to no avail. I use an APIC battery power, spikes in the power are thus unlikely. My conclusion so far: the disk is dead. I need this disk very badly because it contains the last few days of important development of which not all code was checked in the moment this happened. Are there any ways to recover dead SSD drives? The drive is a new X25-M G2 160GB model SSDSA2M160G2GC 2.5" in an extension bay and has been running without issues for 3 months on SAS.
