• scikit learn extratreeclassifier hanging

  I'm running the scikit learn on some rather large training datasets ~1,600,000,000 rows with ~500 features. The platform is Ubuntu server 14.04, the hardware has 100gb of ram and 20 CPU cores. The test datasets are about half as many rows. I set n_jobs = 10, and am forest_size = 3*number_of_features so about 1700 trees. If I reduce the number of features to about 350 it works fine but never completes the training phase with the full feature set of 500+. The process is still executing and using up about 20gb of ram but is using 0% of CPU. I have also successfully completed on datasets with ~400,000 rows but twice as many features which completes after only about 1 hour. I am being careful to delete any arrays/objects that are not in use. Does anyone have any ideas I might try?

  Hi, How do I learn Dvorak typing in Ubuntu? I have Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm planning to learn one of the Swedish dvorak versions. It's included in ubuntu 10.04. I used to play a game called Grand Prix Tycoon on mousebreaker.com . I know it's a silly game but if you use a game of some sort you can get better so much faster. A) Is there a program that I can use to learn Dvorak? B) Is there a game of some sort to learn Dvorak? C) Is the Swedish version I linked to supported?

• Change power button to 'Ask' in Xubuntu 13.10

  I have recently installed Xubuntu 13.10 on my Vaio vpcea making me a Linux beginner. The problem is that laptop's power button is right on the edge of the bezel making it far too easy to press accidentally, in my opinion a design fault by Sony. At present, when I press the power button it shuts down strait away and as you can imagine, when I'm accidentally pressing it all the time it gets very annoying! So I planned to change it to ask what I would like to do when I press it or at least ask if I'm sure. So I went through the xfce GUI options "Settings Manager" - "Power Manager" to the field "When power button is pressed", but it was already set to "Ask". So I did some digging and found a thread telling me to navigate to /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-manager.xml where it said to find power-button-action and check that value="3". It already did. So I looked some more and found this thread which focuses on acpi scripts. I tried solution 1 & 2 using sudoedit to change the files accordingly (I have made executable bash shell scripts already so I think I followed them correctly), but still no difference. I also found this thread which instructed me to edit /etc/systemd/logind.conf so that HandlePowerKey=ignore. Still no luck. I even tried my own approach to completely disable /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh by renaming it powerbtn.sh.bak hoping for at least no response from the power button... and I have done many reboots in between... but still it shuts down! I have also read that some people have the file /etc/acpi/events/power_button, but I do not. So does anyone have any other ideas? What else could be executing the shutdown sequence Is there something I'm missing? I haven't undone any of these actions so every one of the above files is currently edited on my computer, with the exception that "Solution 2" automatically undone "Solution 1" above. Thanks guys.

• Aren't Information Expert / Tell Don't Ask at odds with Single Responsibility Principle?

  It is probably just me, which is why I'm asking the question. Information Expert, Tell Don't Ask, and SRP are often mentioned together as best practices. But I think they are at odds. Here is what I'm talking about: Code that favors SRP but violates Tell Don't Ask, Info Expert: Customer bob = ...; // TransferObjectFactory has to use Customer's accessors to do its work, // violates Tell Don't Ask CustomerDTO dto = TransferObjectFactory.createFrom(bob); Code that favors Tell Don't Ask / Info Expert but violates SRP: Customer bob = ...; // Now Customer is doing more than just representing the domain concept of Customer, // violates SRP CustomerDTO dto = bob.toDTO(); If they are indeed at odds, that's a vindication of my OCD. Otherwise, please fill me in on how these practices can co-exist peacefully. Thank you.   There are many things to learn in web development. You can easily find what are the most important thing that you need to learn if you want to be a webmaster. Answer to questions about how to become a web developer or a webmaster only contained limited items that someone need to master. (Some eg - a, b ) But the problem is that these resources are not complete. When I started learning web development i follow the same steps. But after learning the basic development I didn't know that I have learnt nothing, there are many more things to learn. I realized this by following blogs , Q&A sites. When I first downloaded the HTNL% Boilerplate, the issue that they have covered, some of them I haven't even heard about. I want you to just suggest what are the possible things, issues that someone can learn and why to learn. I know the answer is follow blogs and do your work you will learn with time, but with these platforms I could get some benefit out of other experiences. This question is not how to become a webmaster, but answer to this may also cover that too.

  What did you learn today? Everyday teaches you something, some lesson or the other. Some day you learn a new language, a new skill or a new hobby or visit some new place, learn music, have a different dining experience, learn swimming, make some good friends, get in touch with some old friend etc. etc…. Each of these things teaches you something… So, what did you learn today? Some of the learnings from my past weeks are outlined below… Respect others. Don’t underestimate them. (Though I never consciously do so) Be careful with your words because words have different meanings if the context is not clear. Spend some time for your personal stuff and allow others do so. Every individual is different, their skills different, their thoughts are different, their perceptions are different. So, be polite. Time management. (This is a tough skill to master). At the end of the day I keep looking for more time so may be you. So, again What did you learn today? This reflection is important because if you don’t know what you are learning at every stage in your life, then your are not learning and not growing. In short you are not living. Learning is not memorization but it is self realization….. Happy learning!!!

• Challenge: Learn One New Thing Today

  Most of us know that there's a lot to learn. I'm teaching a class this morning, and even on the subject where I'm the "expert" (that word always makes me nervous!) I still have a lot to learn. To learn, sometimes I take a class, read a book, or carve out a large chunk of time so that I can fully grasp the subject. But since I've been working, I really don't have a lot of opportunities to do that. Like you, I'm really busy. So what I've been able to learn is to take just a few moments each day and learn something new about SQL Server. I thought I would share that process here. First, I started with an outline of the product. You can use Books Online, a college class syllabus, a training class outline, or a comprehensive book table of contents. Then I checked off the things I felt I knew a little about. Sure, I'll come back around to those, but I want to be as efficient as I can. I then trolled various checklists to see what I needed to know about the subjects I didn't have checked off. From there (I'm doing all this in a notepad, and then later in OneNote when that came out) I developed a block of text for that subject. Every time I ran across a book, article, web site or recording on that topic I wrote that reference down. Later I went back and quickly looked over those resources and tried to figure out how I could parcel it out - 10 minutes for this one, a free seminar (like the one I'm teaching today - ironic) takes 4 hours, a web site takes an hour to grok, that sort of thing.  Then all I did was figure out how much time each day I'll give to training. Sure, it literally may be ten minutes, but it adds up. One final thing - as I used something I learned, I came back and made notes in that topic. You learn to play the piano not just from a book, but by playing the piano, after all. If you don't use what you learn, you'll lose it. So if you're interested in getting better at SQL Server, and you're willing to do a little work, try out this method. • Probably the dumbest and poitnless question to ask

  How can I dual boot this with Windows 8? I've tried to burn to a CD, never have a enough memory or the program tells me that the CD isn't writable. So, I want to run from USB. But I never understood how to run the program from the USB, how to download it on to the USB and how to set up the computer to run the USB before the Hard Drive. I am a beginner trying to learn Linux, if any one could help a newbie like me, that would be much appreciated.

• bash script ask for root password

  I want have a script that I can give to friends which will add repositories and download files, install them without having to use command as they are not command line savey and have no desire to learn. I need to know how to get the script to prompt them for the root password to allow them to do some of these functions. How would I go about this? Please don't hate on them.. Getting them to start using Linux was a big step and I am just happy that they are attempting something new... and it was in the open source world..

• How to ask developers to think about high resolution screens

  I just got a ASUS N56VZ laptop, and it`s all good, but the screen resolution 1920x1080px. I am not asking, how to scale ui elements. If someone is interested I have found some tricks: increase font size in system settings increase unity dock size in MyUnity or system settings in modern Ubuntu versions. tweak userChrome.js of FireFox to make buttons|panels|icons larger add DefaultZoomLevel extension to FireFox to make it zoom pages initially. But all of it is miserable, because there are some big bugs: window decoration elements are way too small to pick them with mouse. I can't scale window easily and I can't position my cursor fast on the close|maximize buttons. Tuning lines like in sound volume dialog are hardly clickable at all. Unity top panel (status panel & tray) hardly can contain the bigger font, so it looks ugly, but icons are still the same. Sometimes I can`t read text, as it is cropped (and I cant scale some dialogs as it has fixed size) Chromium is not usable at all (ok, it's not Ubuntu problem, but the problem still exists) JAVA applications are not scalable (same as above) In FF I am able to get descent results in most cases, but multiplication of system font increase and browser font increase makes system controls (combobox, lists, drop down lists) extremely big, so I cant even control the zoom level on the page. IMHO, we should post a bug report (but what kind of bug?) and vote for it! The problem is even deeper, but at least we should ask developers to think about it. So my question is: how can I post a report (the right words and right place) and how can we (who already has that problem, or who want it to be solved before hardware upgrade) vote for faster solution. Any ideas?

• How long would it take to learn Python?

  Hi all I have decided to take the time out after work to learn Python. Python appeals to me because at work (Web and eLearning Company), I have to follow out very repetitive tasks like delete all these tags, rename all these tasks and even more advanced repetive tasks. Additionally it would be good for me to get an understanding of Python first because of its fairly easy to learn syntax. How long would it take to learn the basics and go through these tutorials on Python (+ the Python tutorial)? I will only be spending 1 hour or so on it in the afternoons. http://openbookproject.net/thinkcs/python/english2e/index.html I have told my piano teacher I would like to take a month of learning piano to do this would this be adequate time? • How to learn ASP.NET MVC without learning ASP.NET Web forms

  First of all, I am not a web developer but I can say that I understand in general the difference between PHP, ASP.NET, etc. I have played a little with ASP.NET and C# as well, however, I didn't continue the learning path. Now I'd like to learn ASP.NET MVC but there is no a book for a beginner in ASP.NET MVC so I had a look at the tutorials but it seems that I need to learn C# first and SQL Server and HTML, am I right? So please tell me how can I learn ASP.NET MVC directly (I mean without learning ASP.NET Web forms). What do I need to learn (You can assume that I am an absolute beginner). Update: It is true that i can find ASP.NET MVC tutorial that explain ASP.NET MVC, but I used to find ASP.NET web forms books that explain SQL and C# at the same time and take you step by step. In ASP.NET MVC I don't know how can I start! How can I learn SQL in its own and C# in its own and then combine them with ASP.NET MVC!

  I would like to get into computer security in my career. What are the best ways to learn how to program securely? It seems to me that besides textbooks and taking classes in the subject that perhaps learning how to "hack" would be one of the best ways to learn. My reason for thinking this is the thought that the best way to learn how to prevent someone from doing what you don't want them to is to learn what they're capable of doing. If this is the case, then this poses another question: How would you go about learning to hack in an ethical manner? I definitely don't want to break laws or cause harm in my quest. I have signed up for three days learning course at Koenig Solutions for End to End SQL Server Business Intelligence. • How to learn to draw UML sequence diagrams

  How can I learn to draw UML sequence diagrams. Even though I don't use UML much I find that type of diagrams to be quite expressive and want to learn how to draw them. I don't plan to use them to visualise a large chunks of code, hence I would like to avoid using tools, and learn how to draw them with just pen and paper. Muscle memory is good. I guess I would need to learn some basics of notation first, and then just practice it like in "take the piece of code, draw a seq. diagram visualising the code, then generate the diagram using some tool/website, then compare what I'd drawn to what the tool result. Find the differences, correct them, repeat.". Where do I start? Can you recommend a book or a web site or something else?

• what to learn & practice to be a programmer (not for Job) [closed]

  I want to be able to write programs (tools) for my own needs, and I want to tell the computer what to do, not to be strict to what other's told it to do. I have a good knowledge of Linux & Windows, I am also have a bit of Python in my head, but I think that I need some guidance on what languages or practices to invest my time into in order to be able to tell the computer what to do. I know there is a lot of posts similar to what I am asking here, but there is a big difference and so I have opened this thread. My goal isn't to work at a company, so I don't need to learn how to work as a team, I don't need to learn as much how to maintain my code nor how to write it nice for others to understand (I know it is important but not for me). I don't want to learn it as a profession, but as a serious hobby (you can call it hacking as long as you know what cracking means), my end goal is to be able to understand other's people code, and to write my own code with a lot of deep knowledge of the ins and outs of the computer system in order to gain from it as much as I can. So in essence my questions are: How can I understand, in depth, computers, in order to exploit them as much as I can? What should I learn? Are there any books that I should read? Is it possible to do this, or do I have to learn every aspect of programming?
