  • Script For Detecting Availability of XMLHttp in Internet Explorer

    Having the XMLHttpRequest API available is key to any ADF Faces Rich Client application. Unfortunately, it is possible for users to switch off this option in Internet Explorer as a Security setting. Without XMLHttpRequest available, your ADF Faces application will simply not work correctly, but rather than giving the user a bad user experience wouldn't it be nicer to tell them that they need to make some changes in order to use the application?  Thanks to Blake Sullivan in the ADF Faces team we now have a little script that can do just this. The script is available from https://samplecode.oracle.com here - The attached file browserCheck.js is what you'll need to add to your project.The best way to use this script is to make changes to whatever template you are using for the entry points to your application. If you're not currently using template then you'll have to make the same change in each of your JSPX pages. Save the browserCheck.js file into a /js/ directory under your HTML root within your UI project (e.g. ViewController)In the template or page, select the <af:document> object in the Structure window. From the right mouse (context) menu choose Facet and select the metaContainer facet.Switch to the source code view and locate the metaContainer facet. Then insert the following lines (I've included the facet tag for clarity but you'll already have that):      <f:facet name="metaContainer">        <af:resource type="javascript"                      source="/js/browserCheck.js"/>        <af:resource type="javascript">           xmlhttpNativeCheck(                     "help/howToConfigureYourBrowser.html");        </af:resource>      </f:facet>Note that the argument to the xmlhttpNativeCheck function is a page that you want to show to the user if they need to change their browser configuration. So build this page in the appropriate place as well. You can also just call the function without any arguments e.g. xmlhttpNativeCheck(); in which case it will pop up default instructions for the user to follow, but not redirect to any other page.

    I have a situation where we on a regular basis need a freshly installed "virgin" Windows installation to do various work in isolation on, and building one from scratch every time in a vmware instance is getting tedious. Perhaps there are cloud offerings providing a service allowing to request one or more Windows instances and after a very short while they were available for logging in through Remote Desktop? After usage they were just recycled without having to pay for a full Windows license every time. Do this exist for a reasonable price? What is your personal experiences with this?

  • Connect to NFS on availability

    What would be a good way to automatically mount an NFS when it gets/is available? I have the following: Media server at home, running Ubuntu, 10.10 with GUI *) Laptop often at home, often on the road or at clients. Ubuntu 10.10 with GUI. What I'd like is my laptop connecting to the nfs (or any other mountable networked filesystem) so that Banshee sees all the music, new podcast-entries (and video) from that media-server. I already have firefly (mt-daapd) running, which works, but is flakey on both server-side and client-side. But its biggest downside, is that I cannot easily fix metadata on files on the media-server this way. DAAP is read-only by design. I can mount nfs manually, through a sudo mount /media/nfsmultimedia/. I am not looking for a manual, or howto on setting up a NFS client and server. Merely a way to have this more transparently working. Obviously I'd like the NFS to be unmounted if the network is no longer available (i.e. when I open my laptop-lid on my clients buro). It may be, that an NFS is not suited for this, in that case, I'd love to hear other options. :) *) Actually: I also have a fileserver, backupserver and webserver to which I'd like to connect in a somewhat similar way. Right now I connect to these over SSH, using gvfs.

  • YouTube custom thumbnails feature availability

    I've been trying to figure out this on my own for weeks, but now I give up. 'Custom thumbnails' feature on YouTube is such a controversial one, it was changed so much... so much that even FAQ on YouTube doesn't fully describe it's features (as I see). I have a YouTube channel for one of my websites. This YouTube channel is main marketing force for my website - it brings all the boys to my yard (I mean, website). So I have to use all the hacky-tricky stuff to increase my visibility on youtube. And damn, those custom thumbnails are giving me hard times... As far as I understand, this is current state of 'custom thumbnail' feature: "If your account is in good standing, you may have the ability to upload custom thumbnails for your video uploads."   • Using ASP.NET, Membership, and jQuery to Determine Username Availability

    Chances are, at some point you've tried creating a new user account on a website and were told that the username you selected was already taken. This is especially common on very large websites with millions of members, but can happen on smaller websites with common usernames, such as people's names or popular words or phrases in the lexicon of the online community that frequents the website. If the user registration process is short and sweet, most users won't balk when they are told their desired username has already been taken - they'll just try a new one. But if the user registration process is long, involving several questions and scrolling, it can be frustrating to complete the registration process only to be told you need to return to the top of the page to try a different username. Many websites use Ajax techniques to check whether a visitor's desired username is available as soon as they enter it (rather than waiting for them to submit the form). This article shows how to implement such a feature in an ASP.NET website using Membership and jQuery.     Setting up a two-node Apache web server cluster that provides high-availability. In front of the Apache cluster we create a load balancer that splits up incoming requests between the two Apache nodes. Because we do not want the load balancer to become another “Single Point Of Failure”, we must provide high-availability for the load balancer, too. Therefore our load balancer will in fact consist out of two load balancer nodes that monitor each other using heartbeat, and if one load balancer fails, the other takes over silently. The following setup is proposed: Apache node 1: webserver1.example.com (webserver1) – IP address: 192.168.0.101; Apache document root: /var/www Apache node 2: webserver2.example.com (webserver2) – IP address: 192.168.0.102; Apache document root: /var/www Load Balancer node 1: loadb1.example.com (loadb1) – IP address: 192.168.0.103 Load Balancer node 2: loadb2.example.com (loadb2) – IP address: 192.168.0.104 Virtual IP Address: 192.168.0.105 (used for incoming requests) Currently, there are many solutions for Linux machines and there aren't any on windows. I found 'graphios' at https://github.com/shawn-sterling/graphios that would plot extra data provided by plugins. What I need instead is a plugin that would plot information such as: 'the service was in ERROR state 0.5% of the time last week, while the week before it was 1%'. This would be useful for knowing whether the overall stability is getting better.

    Overview: I have a table which stores a persons "availability" for a current day, e.g. Mon - 8:00am - 11:30am Mon - 1:30pm - 6:00pm A second table stores appointments that this person already has for the same day, e.g. Mon - 8:30am - 11:00am Mon - 2:30pm - 4pm Desired result: Doing calculationsI'd like to have the following result - e.g. "this person has availability on the given day": Mon - 8:00am - 8:30am Mon - 11:00am - 11:30am Mon - 1:30pm - 2:30pm Mon - 4:00pm - 6:00pm Any ideas on how to calculate the output given the two inputs (e.g. availability, existing appointments) would be greatly appreciated. Preferably I'd use javascript on the client to do the calculating as I would believe that doing it within the DB (I'm using MSSQL) would be slow for many records, persons, etc. Hope this is enough information to illustrate the problem at hand - Many thanks in advance.

  • Exchange 2010 DAG + VMWare HA = no support?

    We currently have an Exchange 2003 clustered environment (two machine cluster) that we're looking to upgrade to 2010. We recently purchased a VMWare virtualization environment (three Dell R710's with an EMC NS-120 serving up NFS datastores - iSCSI is available) that we wish to use for this new environment. I'm seeing that Microsoft does not support Exchange 2010 DAGs with a virtualization high availability solution (see links below). I would like to utilize the DAG to ensure the data stays available if one host goes down, and HA to ensure that if the physical host goes down, the VM will come back up on the other available host. Does anybody know why MS does not support this? VMWare HA will only restart the VM if it is hung/down - I don't see any difference between this and restarting the physical box if someone pulled the power... Will we only run into issues with support if it has something to do with HA/DAG failover or will they see we have HA and tell us to put it on a physical box even if it has nothing to do with HA? If we disable HA for these VM's will that satisfy them on a support case? Has anybody set up an Exchange 2010 DAG on VMware with HA enabled? Will they have any issues with using an NFS datastore? We have much greater flexibility on the EMC with NFS vs iSCSI, so I would prefer to continue utilizing that.   • Load balancing Apache on a budget?

    Hi everyone, I am trying to get my head around the concept of load balancing to ensure availability and redundancy to keep users happy when things go wrong, rather than load balancing for the sake of offering blistering speed to millions of users. We're on a budget and trying to stick to the stuff where there's plenty of knowledge available, so running Apache on Ubuntu VPS's seems like the strategy until some famous search engine acquire us (Saturday irony included, please note). At least to me, it's a complete jungle of different solutions available. Apaches own mod_proxy & HAproxy are two that we found by a quick google search, but having zero experience of load balancing, I have no idea of what would be appropriate for our situation, or what we would look after while choosing a solution to solve our availability concerns. What is the best option for us? What should we do to get availability high whilst staying inside our budgets?

However, one of them is in Availability Zone 1a and the other is in 1d. Am I getting all the speed benefits of having both instances in the same "data center" (East-1) even if they are in different Availability Zones, or can I optimize by moving them to the same Availability Zone?
