  • Disable Network settings (TCP/IP & DNS) on Windows 7 Ultimate

    i also read this discussion here How to disable Tcp/Ip settings in windows 7 via GPO? about what i want to do but i still have problems. So here i am: i have a desktop pc with two accounts, both with Administrative rights. One is used by the entire my family, in particular by my brother. The problem is that i set some DNS and IP configurations to let be possible the VNC connection from remote. Now i would like to disable the network settings (TCP/IP and DNS) to prohibit my brother to change it preventing me to connect to it. So how can i do this? I set the policies from GPO but i still can change these settings from his account. Here's a pic of Registry Keys: http://imageshack.us/a/img339/3310/famigliapc2012092017274.png what didn't i do?   • What emulation mode for an epson printer is best?

    I'm looking for a color duplex printer for Ubuntu. My favourites are Epson B-310N and Brother HL 4050CDN. The latter should be work with linux, but I'd prefer the first one, because printing costs are cheaper. The epson printer has "Epson ESC/P Raster", "PCL3", and "Epson ESC/P2" emulation. Can I use the printer with one of those emulations under linux? Were there any restrictions (like unusable duplex)?

  • Impossible to install Ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with Windows 7 on new Acer desktop computer

    My brother has a brand new Acer Desktop with Windows 7. I have done many installs (40+) of Ubuntu starting with 8.10, and have never run into this. I've spent three hours trying to do a dual boot install of 10.10. When you get to the place where you normally would choose to install as a dual boot or overwrite the existing information on the hard drive, that block is just blank. Nothing. No choices even to do a manual partition setup. If you try to go on you get the message "No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu." but there is nothing in the partitioning menu. I tried a good 10.04 disc also. Same thing happens with it. I ran a gparted live cd, and it shows the hard drive as sda with 3 partitions on the original. sda1 is a small partition called PQService. sda2 is another small partition called System Reserved, and GParted says it is the boot partition. sda3 is the main partation with the operating system (Windows 7) and all of the empty space. There is a little unallocated space at the very beginning and very end of the hard drive. If I go to places in the Live CD, it shows a 640 gb hard disk called Acer, but it also shows a 640 gb hard disk called system reserved. They are the same disk. There is just one hard drive. If you click properties in the System Reserved 640 gb, it shows all information as unknown. I had to change the boot order in the bios in order to run the live cd. The hard drive instead of being listed as such is listed as Raid:Raid Ready. Something the way this computer is set up is preventing Ubuntu from being able to identify the hard drive partitions at all to do an install, even if you were not doing a dual boot and just wanted to overwrite Windows. Is this a bug that needs reported? This is a major problem for me and my brother, but also for Ubuntu if new users want to Ubuntu and find they cannot install it.

    Possible Duplicate: Can I switch from ubuntu amd64 to ubuntu 32bit My brother installed 64 bit Ubuntu on my moms old PC (dualboot with winXP) and it runs very crappily. It is on Ubuntu 11.10 and I was wondering if there is any easy way of updating to 32 bit 12.04. I know on fedora when you insert instillation media on a computer that already has fedora it asks you if you want to install it over that fedora, is there anything like this for Ubuntu. THANKS!

  • scanner no longer working windows 7

    I have a windows 7 64 pro machine that for some reason no longer works with a brother all in one printer/scanner, when I try to scan. This happened seemingly out of nowhere. Printing still works. When I try to scan from photoshop, photoshop crashes. When I try to scan from device manager (which takes a really long time to access the printer) I get an error saying: "operation could not be completed. (error 0x00000015). the device is not ready. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the printer and drivers. I have also run the brother driver cleaner and then reinstalled and get the same results every time. I had access to another HP all in one. And very strangely When I setup this new printer I have a similar issue that happens. I am able to print but when I try to scan from the HP tool nothing pops up. So my thoughts are it is something to do with the twain driver? But I don't know what to do or check. Any help is appreciated.

  • Hardware needed to route between two networks over wireless

    I recently rented an apartment about 100 yards from my brother's house. I have line of sight to his house and can pick up his home AP signal with one of my two laptops if I go out on my balcony (facing his house) or put the laptop by the window. The other laptop will sometimes see the SSID broadcast, but fails to connect, drops, etc. We would like to set up a persistent wireless connection between our homes. We would prefer each network be logically segmented as independent networks, but he will share his internet connection. I've got a bunch of tv shows saved to a NAS by my TiVO that I'd like to make available to him across the wireless link. My brother strongly prefers to not mess with his WAP at all. His network is running fine and is afraid to mess it up. I guess you could say he is "technologically declined". If we can get a reliable 11Mbps connection we will be satisfied. What hardware do I need to make this work? I was thinking a router with two wireless interfaces (external antennas) a wired interface, and a directional antenna mounted on my balcony facing his house. Can anyone recommend hardware to make this happen? Cheaper is better. I'll only be living in the area a year or two. I do have an old satellite TV antenna if that can be used to direct the signal.

  • What can I do to prevent system power downs?

    Yesterday I was given my brother's old laptop - core i7, 2.67GHz, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Win7 64 bit. It's a Sony Vaio Z11. Approx 18 months old. When running something computationally intensive, the fan starts up and after about 30 secs it just powers itself down with no warning. I guess it is overheating. There is nothing in the event logs to suggest what is causing it - the only thing I see is "the last system shutdown was unexpected" or something similar. This is a problem for me because I use a lot of number crunching apps, which pretty much makes it useless to me. I would like to know if there is anything I can do, other than the obvious things I've done already - open up and clean out dust, re-install the OS. According to my brother, this problem started about 6 months ago when it was already outside warranty. If it's just used for simple things - web browsing, word processing etc, the problem does not occur. Any ideas for what I can do to fix this ? Update: I found that the laptop has 2 hardware settings for graphics: Speed and Stamina - the Speed setting seems to use an nvidia GEforce GT 330M, while the Stamina setting uses an Intel chipset. With the setting on Speed, I can hear the fan the whole time, and the system powers down after a short while (5-10 mins) even just doing basic tasks (browsing this site for example), but doesn't shut down if I just leave it switched on. In this mode it also sometimes just freezes the screen and I have to power off myself. However on Stamina setting it only powers down when doing number crunching and never freezes the screen.

    I am running a Windows 7 laptop that is joined to my company's domain. When I installed Windows 7, I created an account for myself, joined to the domain, and it had been working quite well even though I'm physically remote most of the time, and not actually on the network. However, today I created a new local user account (non-admin) for my little brother. While he was using it, he decided he wanted to install a program, because his account is not an admin, he was prompted to enter Administrator credentials to allow the program to make changes to his computer. I entered my credentials, and this is the first time I ran into the error message: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. I tried logging off and loggin back in, rebooting, etc etc, and no matter what, every time I try to authenticate as my "normal" domain account - I get that message. I can no longer access my computer as an administrator. I no longer know how to log in to my machine using any other account aside from my little brother's non-admin account. I don't have any other local accounts created, and the default local admin account was never enabled. I'd appreciate any ideas on how I can recover access to my account. Let me know if I can provide any more information.     Hello, I need IMMEDIATE Help on a computer crime that I was arrested for. It may involve my computer, my ip, and my ex-girlfriend being the true criminal. The police do not tell you much they are very vague. I was charged though! So my questions are: -If someone did use my computer at my house and business and post a rude craigslist ad about a friend of my girlfriend at the time from a fake email address, how can I be the ONLY one as a suspect. Also how can I be charged. I noticed the last few days there are many ways to use other peoples computers, connections, etc. Here are a few things I found: You can steal or illegally use an ip addresss or mac address. Dynamic Ip is less secure and more vulnerable than static. People can sidejack and spoof your Mac, Ip, etc. There is another thing called arp spoofing. I am sure this is more things, but how can I prove that this happened to me or didnt happen to me. -The police contacted Craigslist, the victim, aol, and the two isp companies. They say they traced the IP's to my business and my home. My ex was who I lived with and had a business with has access to the computers and the keys to bothe buildings. My brother also lives and works with me. My business has many teenagers who use the computer and wifi. My brother is a college kid and also has friends over the house and they use the computer freely. So how can they say it was me because of an angry ex girlfriend.

  • USB 3.0 ports backwards compatibility problems with 2.0 devices?

    I see some info on the net that suggest that I should be able to get my USB 2.0 devices to work in 3.0 ports. I only have two 2.0 ports on my new computer, and six 3.0 ports. I have installed drives. There's two different drivers, I guess some of the ports are supported by the intel board and some supported by some other chipset on the motherboard. I however have yet to get any of the 3.0 ports to work, and my brother had had the same issue with his devices not working in 3.0 ports on his computer. So I am beginning to wonder if the backwards compatibility isn't reliable for some reason. Maybe manufacturers opting not to implement 2.0 support on the 3.0 ports. I understand that physically the wiring is there, but that is only half the story. Beyond my brother's and my own computers (different motherboards/everything), I have yet to see a 2.0 device work in a 3.0 port. Is there any reason for this apparent device incompatibility? I.e. looking for responses that would indicate what areas to explore for issues or if there is any known cases of manufacturers deviating from spec in hardware or drivers. I am aware it's "supposed" to work :) Update: Does this have any relation to "USB Legacy Support" options in the BIOS? There several options combinations of options with "USB Legacy Support" and "USB 3.0 Legacy Support" and the description for these is a bit confusing, sounds like a bad translation.

  • Windows 7 Account Settings Vanished

    So I came home and stumbled upon a bit of a mystery. When I got home my brother was using my desktop PC that was running Windows 7 (I have accounts for my 2 brothers and my mom on the machine, but mine is the only admin account). After he finished his game he logged out and I logged in to my account, but found only strangeness. My windows account seems to have been somewhat "reset", meaning: my quick launch shortcuts were gone my dropbox account did not automatically login my pidgin accounts were no longer there I had to relogin Steam iTunes could not launch (I had hooked up my iDevice before logging in) The Documents/Pictures/Music shortcuts in the start menu no longer work However, despite that: my desktop wallpaper was still correct my documents folder was still there in c:\Users\my account name\My Documents as expected Google Chrome settings seem to have been retained other accounts on the same machine seem to be fine I asked my brother if he had installed anything strange during the day, he only installed Yahoo Messenger. I last used the machine around 24 hours ago and it was fine then. I'm not sure what else has been affected. I'm inclined to just create a new admin user for me to use, but I'd like to have some idea of what actually happened.

It looks like this: function findRelations(members){ var wires = new Array(); var count = 0; for (n = 0; n < members.length; n++){ alert(members.length); // this alert is undefined if (members[n].connection){ for (i = 0; i < members[n].connection[0].length; i++){ var mw = new Array(); var destination = 0; for (m = 0; m < members.length; m ++){ if (members[m] == members[n].connection[0]){ destination = m; mw = [n, destination]; wires [count] = mw; count++; } } } } } return wires; } However, when I run this function, I get nothing. And the first alert, which is placed inside the function shows 'undefined' at all. findRelations(members); alert("Found " + wires.length + " connections"); I guess that's because of JavaScript literal. Could you suggest how to change a function or perhaps to change litteral to JSON array to get it work?! And at the end to get 'm' and 'n' values as numbers.

  • Problems running XNA game on 64-bit Windows 7

    I'm having problems getting my game engine to run on my brother's machine, which is running 64-bit Windows 7. I'm developing on 32-bit XP SP2. My app uses XNA, FMOD.NET, and another dll I wrote entirely in C#. Everything is targeted to x86, not AnyCPU. I've read that this is required for XNA to work because there is no 64-bit xna framework. I recompiled FMOD.NET as x86 as well and made sure to be using the 32-bit version of the native dll. So I don't see any problems there. However when he tries to run my app, it gives an error which is mysterious, but not unheard of. A FileNotFoundException with an empty file name, and the top of the stack trace is in my main form constructor. The message is The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E) I found some threads online about this error, all with very vague, mixed, and fuzzy responses that don't really help me. Most remind people to target x86. Some say check that they have all the dlls necessary. I gave my brother Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll, but does he need to install the entire XNA redistributable package? When I take everything I sent him and stick it in a random directory, it still runs fine for me. I developed the game in VS2008, not in game studio, using XNA 3.0 and a Windows Forms control that uses XNA drawing which I found in an msdn tutorial. I would also like to avoid requiring a full installer if possible. Any insight? Please?

    I'm trying to get Thunderbird to be my default application to subscribe to feed that I visit in firefox. I "choose application" and put in the path of Thunderbird executable C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe And it doesn't work, asks me to close Thunderbird It's strange that Firefox has Outlook as a selectable option which works flawlessly but its own brother Thunderbird isn't even on the list of defaults. PS: And when I have Thunderbird closed and then do the above, it starts the Thunderbird and puts the feed in whatever folder it likes without even asking me.

    When I first set up my internet connection it was all good and fast but after 2 months the connection started to be slow sometimes and sometimes there is no connection until i turn off my wifi then turn it on again on the laptop. And sometimes I have to restart the router. I don't know what's wrong. I think there is something wrong with the router because this problem happens with my brother's laptop and my phone too.
