  • How often do you find javascript disabled on browsers?

    I have started using ajax/jQuery in our websites / application. There are many plugins that support degrading the javascript to browsers that dont have javascript enabled and techniques to support this. What are peoples thoughts on javascript support, we build applications rather than just websites and are looking to just support javascript enabled browsers as a pre-requisite assuming that most people or companies have javascript enabled. Do you find most people have javascript? do you monitor the percentage of javascript/non-javascript browsers (I guess this can be done with website stats) and what are the numbers regarding this?

  • Can Bonjour browse a service with a particular name?

    Bonjour provides "DNSSD.browse(serviceType,callBackObject)" method which browses for services of a particular type. If a service of the given type is found, Bonjour call "callBackObject.serviceFound". If the service is lost, Bonjour calls "callBackObject.serviceLost". I alway considered "DNSSD.browse" as a method for monitoring a particular service. Bonjour monitors a particular service and calls necessary method if the service is found (available) or lost (not available). But than I realized that "DNSSD.browse" receives (as argument) a type of service (for example "http.tcp") and there can be several services of this type. So, its probably calls "serviceFound" and "serviceLost" if any service of the specified type is found or lost, respectively. But in my application I would like to browse just for one particular service. What is the best way to do it? I have two potential solutions: When I register a service, I give it a unique type. For example: "server1.http.tcp". I register services with unique names (not types) and ask Bonjour to browse for services with particular names. But I am not sure that Bonjour provide such possibility. Can it browse for services with specific names?

    Hi All, I need to change the locale/language of the browse button in input type="file" We have a special function to change the locale of any text to the browser language such as en-US es-MX etc. Say changeLang("Test"); // This will display test in Spanish if the browser // locale is es-MX What I need to do is to change the language of the browse button. Since it is not displayed, I can't code it like changeLang("Browse..."); That's why I need to get the code of this input type and override so that I can apply my function to Browse text.   • Mysterious problem...can remotely connect to a system but can't browse back out.

    I have LogMeIn installed on my home system. I went on travel and my wife called saying that none of our home systems could browse the internet. I thought I would try to connect to my home system using logmein. Surprisingly, I was able to connect to my home system and log in without any problems using logmein. When I opened a browser from my home system, I indeed could not browse. I opened a command prompt and tried to ping my router (192.168.1.1) and it failed/timed out. How is this possible? I can remotely connect to my system but once logged in cannot even ping my router. What's up with that?

    Background I have a broadband connection. The fiber optic cable running from outside to my building is connected to a converter unit. The output of the converter is connected to a router. The router also provides 8 LAN ports to which the computers are connected. Shortly speaking, all computers are interconnected in a workgroup as opposed to a domain. My computer hosts an IIS web server using a private or local domain name www.mydomain.local. I has added 127.0.0.1 www.mydomain.local to the hosts file in the server C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc so I can browse the site from within the server. So far so good. How to make other computers connected to my workgroup able to browse my web server via my private local domain www.mydomain.local? Note: Again, I am a newbie. I have no idea what I should do next.

  • Unable to browse one server unless using FQDN all others work.

    Hello - I installed 4 new Windows 2008 R2 Servers. All are joined to the domain. One out of the four will not browse to our DC without using a FQDN. I can ping the DC server and see it in Network neighborhood but when I click on it I get Windows cannot access \SERVER. BUT accessing it by using \server.domain works fine. It is only having problems with the one DC server. Able to browse every other server with UNC without using FQDN.This is the only machine on our domain that is experiencing the problem and have tried different user accounts.

  • Why can I browse to localhost, not to my computer name? (IIS7) [closed]

    I'm not very clued up on IIS, but I'm trying to do something that I thought would be quite simple. In IE, if I browse to http://localhost:80, I am greeted with a pretty picture with a bunch of welcome messages and a big "IIS7", thanks to the graphic designers at Microsoft. In IE, if I browse to http://mycomputername:80, I'm greeted with 404. It may be my fault... perhaps I've done something weird. Chrome replies 404 to either of those. Should this work, and if so, what am I doing wrong, or what can I do to get it to work? What might cause this to happen and how can I fix it? EDIT To add a bit more information. I did find after posting this question that http://localhost:80 was the only URL I could access on my local PC. I could not access any of the virtual sub-directories on localhost via my browser.

  • Why can't I browse my D: drive, even if I'm in the Administrators group?

    My fileserver running Windows Server 2008 has two logical drives; the C: drive contains all of the system and application data, and the D: drive contains all of the business data. There are several shares on the top level of the D: drive that are working fine. However... When logged into the fileserver interactively via Remote Desktop, only the Domain Administrator and local Administrator accounts can browse the D: drive. I set up an account called "Maintenance" and added it to the local Administrators group, but when logged in with this user, I can't browse into the D: drive. The D: drive has the following permissions ACL: Full Access - SYSTEM Full Access - MACHINE\Administrators It won't even let me view the ACL for the E: drive. So I tried taking ownership of the E: drive, then I can read the ACL, and "Effective Permissions" says that I have full access. But I still get this error message. Location is not available D:\ is not accessible. Access is denied.   • Why am I getting cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi coming up when I browse my webpage?

    I've recently set up a website with a smaller hosting company. The plan has a dedicated IP. They sent me emails to say it's all set up, but now their support channels are all unresponsive even though they say it's open 24 hours. In the File Manager in the cpanel I've put an index.html file in the public_html directory. But when I point my browser to the IP address given to me, it comes up with the cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi page. What is the problem? I haven't set the name-servers for my domain yet, but that shouldn't be a problem because I am using the IP address in the browser. Note: I don't think I have access to ssh.

  • Do logged in users need to browse a site over https?

    I've never thought it was necessary, but a client has requested that all webpages served to logged in users be delivered over HTTPS. Aside from the implementation standpoint, which I don't think I'm going to pursue is there any real reason for this request ? For clarity, the login / logout process, account settings, registration preferences and all user related scripts are served over https. but I can't see the point in my news articles, press releases, events etc... being served in this manner? Am I missing something ?

    Responses to this week’s Ask the Reader question show that just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you have to give up the security and privacy that your home network provides. Earlier this week we asked you to share you browsing away from home security tips and tricks and obliged. JC offered one of the more entertaining tales of away-from-home browsing: Recently a bunch of us stayed at a high end resort down in Mexico. Internet was offered as a pay per device service at about $80/week/device. Considering we had about 12 wifi devices there among us(a few geeks), I decided to plan ahead. I setup a WRT54G as a WiFi client with a vpn back to my house and NAT. Setup a second one as a basic wireless access point with password and plugged it into the first. Onsite we setup the devices and connected to the wireless with one paid account(tied to the MAC address). Everyone connected to the other device for wireless access and it was all tunnelled through my home network with encryption.   • Nautilus won't browse my USB hard drive unless I double click it twice.

    On my laptop, running 10.10, whenever I plug in a thumb drive Nautilus will add an icon on the desktop and open a file manager window with the drive contents. This does not work for my 250Mb external hard drive: the icon is added on the desktop, but no file manager window pops up. Double clicking on the icon just causes some disk activity (on the system drive) and nothing else. Double clicking another time on the icon the file manager eventually opens. At first I thought this was related to nautilus-elementary, but after removing nothing has changed. How do I even start debugging this?

    I'm getting the below error message while trying to browse to a local share on a Windows Server 2003 machine: Windows cannot find ### this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an Association in the folder options control panel The server is on the network, has an assigned IP address, can access the internet and is otherwise functioning normally. I realise this message can occur when opening a document or file which has no application associated with it, but I'm trying to access a share. What's going on here?

    Hello everybody, I have a JSF application and when user click on button I want to open a web page. Desktop.getDesktop().browse(uri); probably opens a web page on server side, how to do it on client side? when i try Desktop.getDesktop().browse(uri); it works, but maybe its because I open the JSF application on localhost so I dont know if the opened uri is on server side or client side. In the specification for getDesktop() its written: getDesktop() Returns the Desktop instance of the current browser context. Thanks!

  • Is there a way to browse a media server (MediaTomb) with a media player (VLC)?

    I currently have an EEE PC set up with LinuxMint as my media server using MediaTomb. I use VLC as my media player on another Windows computer to watch videos off the media server. It works fine, but the current process is: Open up browser and navigate to folder Find the file I want to play and copy URL Paste URL into VLC and watch. This is fine for me on the PC, but it is a little troublesome for my parents to grasp (or for me to use on the phone). Ideally I'd like to: Open up VLC Browse to the file (using VLC) Click/select to play If there is any solution which is similar to this, please let me know. I'm willing to change the software on both server and client to accommodate (although it somewhat depends on which formats are supported on the server) Side note: I've tried searching online for this but I find a lot of jargon such as "media server/centre", media streaming, DLNA, UPNP and feel that some people are either using them interchangeably or incorrectly.

  • Can I change the system's "Browse for Folder" dialog globally?

    As far as I know, everyone hates the "Browse for Folder" dialog: This dialog is always too small, rarely remembers locations well, and worst of all: forces you to navigate your entire computer using a tedious tree structure. Now, to be fair, some of the problems are likely to do with how apps are invoking the control -- not setting a size or a default directory, etc. But the problem about the tedious tree control remains. Is there any way to customize your Windows installation to use a different control? Preferably an app/installer that does it for you safely, but dropping in a compatible DLL or similar technique would be okay too. Or are we stuck with this terrible control forever?

Is there one, or any other suitable solution? Preferably free Update As I understand, most of Mac users are using Path Finder app for file management. It is an awesome program, however surprisingly it also doesn't have such functionality. I guess, the problem is in the way of thinking – my Windows-thinking is not applicable to Mac.
