  • Mount drive at /Volumes/NAME/ or similar in Cygwin

    Hi.. I'm using Cygwin on Windows 7. When I plug in an USB stick, the drive automatically gets mounted to /cygdrive/x . This is good and really easy to use. My problem is that the drive letter changes sometimes, and when I've got remotes set up in git - I've got one called usb at /cygdrive/h/ - this sometimes doesn't work and I have to change the remote URL. That's just an example, there are other scenarios where I wouldn't want it to change. I like what the Mac does, and puts mounts a volume at /Volumes/STICK (STICK is the Volume name of my usb stick). Is there any way I can do this, or something similar under Cygwin. Thanks

  • cygwin Xserver losing connection

    I am running Xserver on cygwin (on top on Windows 7), and then using xterm to remote to linux via ssh -X, and run remote applications there, like konsole, emacs and others. Initially all works fine, e.g. executing emacs pops up the correctly working window on my Windows 7 box. But if I try to run the same emacs some time (like an hour) later, I get a linux message Display localhost:10.0 unavailable, simulating -nw and emacs runs in-line. I have checked and the Xserver seems still up and running ok. Indeed, if I exit out to the original cygwin and reconnect to Linux by ssh -X again, it works just fine. Would you know what is happening and how can it be fixed? Why is my Xserver connection being dropped? Thank you very much.

  • cygwin ssh shortcut on windows desktop

    I have multiple servers that I need to remote into. I prefer Cygwin over Putty to do so. Anyhows - the process of opening my cool Mintty window and then typing the following commands takes too long. PS - I am using a "key" authentication to these servers. First, I double Click Cygwin Terminal shortcut from my windows desktop. Then once the terminal session has booted up, from the command prompt I type the following - $ eval `ssh-agent` $ ssh-add $ ssh <username>@<servername> Please keep in mind that my 'servername' is variable. In fact I have about 10 different server names that could potentially be inserted there - Hence my need for 10 different shortcuts. I would prefer to double click on something from my desktop that will fire up my Mintty and automatically execute the above bash shell commands. Does anyone have or can recommend a nice/elegant solution to do this?

  • Using git through cygwin on windows 8

    I've got a windows 8 dev preview (not sure if it's relevant, but I never had this hassle on w7) machine and I'm trying to clone a git repo from github. The problem is that my ~/.ssh/id_rsa has 440 permissions and it needs to be 400. I've tried chmodding it but the any changes on the user permissions gets reflected in the group permissions (i.e. chmod 600 results in 660, etc). This appears to be constant throughout any file in the whole filesystem.     Which Unix like environment do you prefer on Windows? I have found Cygwin to be very comfortable for a Windows platform (usually XP). I am wondering if there is a better alternative (not because I want to move away from Cygwin). What are the features of Cygwin that you like OR, What are features you find in alternatives that you miss in Cygwin? I am often miss binary compatibility of applications built on Cygwin. These cannot be run directly on another Windows platform. But, usually fetching a copy of cygwin1.dll suffices. A collection of other tools, many of which work directly on the Windows subsystem rather than emulating Unix, like Cygwin does: Have been referred PowerShell a lot of times for scripting on Windows Earlier, UnixUtils was suggested more often Microsoft Windows Services for Unix

  • g++ not linking header files properly

    I am using cygwin libraries to run C and C++ programs on Windows. gcc runs fine, but with g++, I get a long list of errors. I think these erros are because of linking problems with C libraries.   • How to speed up Cygwin?

    I have been running drush scripts (for drupal) with cygwin on my relatively fast windows machine, but I still have to wait about a minute for any drush command (specifically drush cache clear to execute). I'm quite sure it has something to do with the speed of cygwin since my fellow developers (who are running linux) can run these scripts in about 5 seconds. Is there a way to make cygwin use more memory and/or cpu per terminal?

    I plan to migrate my projects over to git, and I'm currently wondering which is the best and / or most stable option under windows. From what I gather I basically have 2.5 options: MSYSgit git under Cygwin (aka 2.5) MSYSgit from a Cygwin prompt (given that Cygwin git is already installed). Note: IMO Cygwin in itself is a big plus as you can have access to pretty much all the *nix command line tools, as where with MSYSgit bash, you only have access to a rather small subset of these tools. Given that, what option would you suggest?

    Hey I have run into the following problem when attempting to build a program in java which executes commands on a remote linux server and returns the output for processing... Basically I have installed Cygwin with an SSH client and want to do the following: Open Cygwin, Send command "user@ip"; Return output; Send command "password"; Return output; Send multiple other commands, Return output; ...etc... So far: Process proc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("C:/Power Apps/Cygwin/Cygwin.bat"); Works nicely except I am at a loss as to how to attempt the next steps. Any help?

    My application uses fopen to open a lot of files. While in linux opening and reading thousand of files doesn't even take a second; in cygwin it takes more than 5 seconds. I think it is because path conversion functions in cygwin dlls. 'open' function is a bit faster. If I use -mno-cygwin it becomes very fast but I can't use it. Is there an easy way to make cygwin dlls just open files; without any linux-windows conversion?

    Hi, I have some trouble setting up Tramp with EmacsW32 and cygwin. I have configured emacs to use cygwin as shell using w32shell. I also set the HOME enviromental variable to c:/cygwin/home/myusername Problem is that tramp seems to hang and that no connection is made: "Tramp waiting for prompts for the new shell". I have tried to turn on debugging, but still only see this message. Looking forward to get some tips on this. Thank you.

    I'm trying to install a Rails app on a Cygwin Rails + WAMP MySQL setup, but rake trows an error : Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) Of course, it's trying to connect to MySQL trought a Cygwin socket, and since there's no MySQL server running on Cygwin, it fails.     All of the sudden svn stopped working in cygwin installation on windows xp. when I execute svn binary, nothing happens, svn process does not even show up in the Task Manager.     So in cygwin bash I am able to type "powershell" to bring me into a powershell prompt but it won't load my powershell profile.ps1 due to not being able to execute scripts, but I can't set the execution policy in this prompt... So I tried running the default powershell prompt (as administrator) and was able to set the execution policy to remote signed, but it doesn't affect the powershell within bash what am I missing?

    I have the following directory structure books/java books/java.ebooks books/java.gwt books/java.swing books/javaee I use this command to create an archive of all the directories starting with the letters a-m tar czf books.a-m.no.AI.tgz --exclude=books/AI.and.algorithms --exclude=books/[N-Z]* --exclude=books/[n-z]* books The .tgz archive that gets created does not contain the java.swing/ directory. Am I missing something in my use of tar or is this a bug in cygwin?

I always get the message: "configure: error: no curses library found" I have all the curses + devel stuff installed + termpcap, which I heard might be related.
