  • Is there any way to distribute x264 encoding jobs across multiple computers (to increase the encoding speed)?

    Does anyone know of a current, active solution to encoding x264 videos across many computers (via the network) to increase encoding FPS? Brownie points for cross-platform and open source, but just so you all know, I usually use Windows. Programs that I have heard of, and why I do not believe they are suitable: x264farm: Not actively developed. Good interface, but does not support two-pass encoding, and fails with newer x264 builds. ELDER: Again, not actively developed, but my issue was that it didn't work with new x264 builds, and it was very difficult to configure (read: randomly stopped working). While I don't absolutely need a program which is being actively developed, I would like one that supports two-pass encoding, and works with new(er) x264 builds. Additional information: So far, I've offered (and awarded!) two separate bounties on this question since I first posted it over two years ago, and I still haven't found a solution to this problem. What I'm looking for basically is a simple program to allow me to encode x264 videos using the processing power of multiple computers connected over a LAN. Furthermore, it would be nice if it worked with new(er) x264 builds, and supported two-pass encoding. If at any time someone has an updated answer, or a new solution to this problem, please post it and it will be given some consideration.

  • Is it possible to distribute STDIN over parallel processes?

    Given the following example input on STDIN: foo bar bar baz === qux bla === def zzz yyy Is it possible to split it on the delimiter (in this case '===') and feed it over stdin to a command running in parallel? So the example input above would result in 3 parallel processes (for example a command called do.sh) where each instance received a part of the data on STDIN, like this: do.sh (instance 1) receives this over STDIN: foo bar bar baz do.sh (instance 2) receives this over STDIN: qux bla do.sh (instance 3) receives this over STDIN: def zzz yyy I suppose something like this is possible using xargs or GNU parallel, but I do not know how.

  • Design to distribute work when generating task oriented input for legacy dos application?

    I'm attempting to automate a really old dos application. I've decided the best way to do this is via input redirection. The legacy app (menu driven) has many tasks within tasks with branching logic. In order to easily understand and reuse the input for these tasks, I'd like to break them into bit size pieces. Since I'll need to start a fresh app on each run, repeating a context to consume a bit might be messy. I'd like to create an object model that: allows me to concentrate on the task at hand allows me to reuse common tasks from different start points prevents me from calling a task from the wrong start point To be more explicit, given I have the following task hierarchy: START A A1 A1a A1b A2 A2a B B1 B1a I'd like an object model that lets me generate an input file for task "A1b" buy using building blocks like: START -> do_A, do_A1, do_A1b but prevents me from: START -> do_A1 // because I'm assuming a different call chain from above This will help me write "do_A1b" because I can always assume the same starting context and will simplify writing "do_A1a" because it has THE SAME starting context. What patterns will help me out here? I'm using ruby at the moment so if dynamic language features can help, I'm game.

    Hi everyone, I am making a C# app and I am using GeckoFX to embed Firefox into my app. For anyone interested, I got it here: http://geckofx.org/. The problem is, I want to deploy GeckoFX with my app and I don't know how to do it. The line of code I use to initialize GeckoFX is this: Skybound.Gecko.Xpcom.Initialize("C:\\xulrunner"); This assumes that the xulrunner folder is at C:\xulrunner. So, my questions is this: how do I add the xulrunner folder as a reference in my app so it's copied relative to where my app is (or at least in a place where my app can find it)?   • Possible to distribute an MPI (C++) program accross the internet rather than within a LAN cluster?

    Hi there, I've written some MPI code which works flawlessly on large clusters. Each node in the cluster has the same cpu architecture and has access to a networked (i.e. 'common') file system (so that each node can excecute the actual binary). But consider this scenario: I have a machine in my office with a dual core processor (intel). I have a machine at home with a dual core processor (amd). Both machines run linux, and both machines can successfully compile and run the MPI code locally (i.e. using 2 cores). Now, is it possible to link the two machines together via MPI, so that I can utilise all 4 cores, bearing in mind the different architectures, and bearing in mind the fact that there are no shared (networked) filesystems?   • Best way to distribute form that can be printed or saved?

    I need to develop a simple form (intended only for printing) to be filled in by arbitrary end users (i.e. no specialized software). Ideally, I'd like the end-user to be able to save their inputs to the form and update it periodically. It seems that (at least without LiveCycle Enterprise Suite) Adobe Reader won't save data input in a PDF form. Aside from just distributing the form as a Word document, does anyone have any suggestions? Background: I do some work for a volunteer ambulance corps. They have a lot of elderly patients who don't know (or can't remember) their medical history. They want to develop a common form with personal information (name, address, DOB, medications list, etc.) for elderly residents to hang on their refrigerators (apparently a common solution to this problem). As some of them (or their children/grandchildren) are computer literate, it would make most sense to provide a download-able blank form that can be filled in, saved, updated, and re-printed as needed. Due to worries about privacy, HIPAA, etc. anything with server-side generation is out, it needs to be 100% client-side, and in a format that the majority of non-technical computer users can access without additional software. Thanks for any tips... at this point, I'm leaning towards just using a .doc form.

    I have an associative array with the ids of x cakes and another associative array with the ids of y people. I want to ensure that each cake is enjoyed by exactly 2 people and that each person gets a fair share of cake overall. However, cakes must be kept whole (i.e. if the average cake per person is a fraction, this fraction will be rounded up for some, and down for others). No person can be assigned the same cake twice. For example: $cake = array('id'=>'1','id'=>'2') $people = array('id'=>'1','id'=>'2','id'=>'3') In order to do so, I wish to create a new array where each row represents a cake-person assignment. As each cake is being assigned to two people, the number of rows in this table should be exactly twice the number of cakes. There will not be exactly 1 solution to this problem but a solution to the above example would be: $cake_person = array( '1'=>array('cake_id'=>'1', 'person_id'=>'1'), '2'=>array('cake_id'=>'1', 'person_id'=>'2'), '3'=>array('cake_id'=>'2', 'person_id'=>'2'), '4'=>array('cake_id'=>'2', 'person_id'=>'3'), ) Notice that people 1 and 3 are losing out but that is because there is no more cake to go around! Each cake must be given exactly twice. How can I generate such a solution reliably for larger numbers of people and cakes?

With Python it's fairly easy to use modulefinder, compileall, and zipfile to make a nice tidy zip containing all the external libraries used. Does Lua have the ability to bundle up its libraries like that, or is there some better best practice for distributing programs that embed Lua?

  • Is there an efficient algorithm to distribute resources in a way that both avoids conflict and allows bias?

    Background (Skip this if you only care about the algorithm) At the university where I work, one of the biggest hassles in our department is classroom scheduling. For illustration purposes and to lay out the scope of the problem, here's how we do scheduling now: Professors give us a list of the classes they're teaching with the time slots they'd prefer to teach, ranked in order of priority (most desired to least desired). Administration gives us a list of the rooms we may assign along with the times those rooms are available for our department's use. We start assigning professors to rooms trying (at first) to take into account the preferences of the various professors. Inevitably, conflicts arise, professors start asking for changes, and the plan falls to pieces somewhere around professor number 30, at which point we start assigning rooms basically wherever we can fit them in, crumpled pieces of paper are everywhere, and nobody's happy. (If you've ever wondered why your class was at 9.30 in the morning on Thursday but 4 pm every other day, now you know) I have been asked to quietly investigate whether software could do this more optimally. The Actual Question Is there an algorithm to efficiently schedule a set of resources such that the following criteria are met: The algorithm must never assign two professors to the same room at the same time. The task is not complete until every professor has been assigned a room / time. The algorithm need not worry about having too many professors for the amount of time slots available. (We're not that well funded.) As much as is possible the algorithm should respect the scheduling preferences of the individual professors. I feel like I can't be the first one to ask this. Is there a efficient algorithm for this, or is this the sort of problem that can only be brute-forced?

    Hello everyone... I am working on an automatic image stitching algorithm using MATLAB. So far, I have downloaded a source code much like the one that I had in mind and so, I'm currently studying how the code work. The problem is, when stitching two or more images together, their color intensity will most probably be different from each other so the stitched seams will be visible to the eye... So, right now, I'm trying to find out how to redistribute their color intensity using the images gradients so that the whole stitched image will have the same color intensity.     Hi all: I am working on The ausdcf.org to try adding several banner ads in swf format to the top. Everything starts to work, but I've got several questions that need your help: The client chose not to go with Google AdManager, but prefer a "minimal approach" to do this task. What I am trying to do is sort of "mimicking" the way Google AdManager does for banners, that is, to split the chance of each particular swf to be shown to the visitor evenly among the banner collection. Definitely I can add some jQuery code to do this from client-side, a random number generator and if-else statement would work - just $.load() it! However, what if I'd like to make sure those disabled Javascript (is there any now btw?) still be able to see different swfs in each visit. Any suggestion on how to approach this?     Am I able to produce code for a game which uses the Farseer engine and release my code under an open source license other than the Ms-PL? My concern is with the following section from the license: If you distribute any portion of the software in source code form, you may do so only under this license by including a complete copy of this license with your distribution. If you distribute any portion of the software in compiled or object code form, you may only do so under a license that complies with this license. If I do not include Farseer in my source code distribution does this give me an exemption from this clause as I am not distributing the software? My code merely uses its functions. No where in the license does it force you to provide source code for derivative works or linking works, it simply gives you the option of "if you distribute".

I've used Apache Maven to deal with all the dependencies of the system, so I don't have the source code of any of the libraries used. I've already checked, all the libraries were released under GPL-compatible licenses (Apache v2, 3-clause BSD, MIT, LGPL v2 and v2.1). I have 3 questions about this scenario: 1) Can I release a package with only the binaries of code I wrote, not including the libraries, and distribute only the source code I wrote? 2) Can I release a package with all the binaries, including the libraries, and distribute only the source code I wrote? 3) Can I release a package with all the binaries, including the libraries, and distribute only the source code I wrote plus the source code of the libraries licensed under the LGPL license?

  • Handling optional GPL dependencies

    Assume I have a library A which is licensed under a two-clause Free BSD style license. Library A optionally depends on library B (the availability of the dependency is configured at build-time), which is licensed under the GPLv3. If I distribute both bundled together, the license will need to be GPL. But am I still able to distribute library A under the FreeBSD license? How do I indicate that the license changes, when the use of library B is enabled? Do I need to distribute two different versions or can I just have one that contains both licenses and states which applies under which conditions? Any example project I can have a look at to see it done?
