• Unity desktop "smears" (doesn't refresh) and shows no wallpaper

  Since a couple of days now, my unity desktop background smears everything, just like what old Windows versions were famous for: Of course, I tried rebooting a couple of times. Also, I switched graphics driver and I tried to change wallpaper and theme, but none of them solved the problem. What could be causing that problem, and where can I search on for its source? Infomation update I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 (not updated to 13.10 yet). The following command were all run from cinnamon (on the same Ubuntu installation). sudo lsb_release -a: No LSB modules are available. • Display not using xorg.conf?

  How can I force my PC to use the xorg.conf file ? I have it set up correctly and it is located at etc/x11/xorg.conf but it is ignored by at start up, I know the file is valid as I created it using nvidia-settings. I just do not know why it is been ignored. • Secondary display showing Ubuntu logo, but is not detected

  I recently installed Ubuntu using WUBI, and it worked perfectly. However, my laptop is showing the main desktop screen, and my secondary display is only showing the Ubuntu logo with its loading bar underneath, nothing more. When I go to 'displays' it is only detecting my laptop screen, and not my Asus monitor (connected with a vga). Things I've done so far: Unplug and replug vga cable. Reboot computer. Re-install Ubuntu. Checked to see if any drivers needed to be installed. None were needed. I have a Thinkpad W520, with a Nvidia Quadro 1000M Thanks for the help!

• how to know which display number for the variable DISPLAY to be exported when ssh to server

  When i ssh to server using -X, i always confuse about which display number i should export. It seems to me sometimes the display number has been used by something, so what i can do is only export DISPLAY=localhost:0 && xclock export DISPLAY=localhost:1 && xclock export DISPLAY=localhost:2 && xclock export DISPLAY=localhost:... until the clock appear. Then i will use that display number. Each time log in to the server, the display number which is able to tunnel the gui data correct would be different. I know many of such similar questions has been asked and answer. However I couldn't find answer to my question, anyone know about it? Thanks!

So i will make some default implementation and a developer can overwrite some methods Example: i have a class ShoppingCart and a class Product the class product haves a method getProductPrice the shoppingcart will call the method getProductPrice for calculating the total price of cart The Shoppingcart and Product are in the same project and i will give the developers the .dll so they can't change the source code so we can update the assembly later So they need to make a other project and extend the product class and overwrite the method getProductPrice so they can implement there own logic The problem is that the shoppingcart will not call the extended method but the original If we make already a extended project for the developers and the shoppingcart will call the extended method then we have a circular reference because the extended product needs a reference to product and the shopping cart to the extended product partial classes also don't works because we only can use partials within the same assembly anyone a suggestion ? thanks in advance

• Display Driver Issue on an hp TX2-1160ea Notebook

  I'm new to Linux and recently switched to Ubuntu 11.04 due to my project requirement. My laptop has been freezing and going to black screen of death when I run anything related to display (Share desktop, stream video, etc). Today I went through the Ubuntu forum to install the appropriate graphic driver and, after doing it, I rebooted my PC. It gave an error before login saying "select the recovery mode" and after clicking OK, it didn't give the same error on reboot but I've lost the 11.04 graphical interface and all I see is the interface of Ubuntu v10 with slow visuals (even scrolling up/down on browser is really slow). For the reference, here's a desktop screenshot so that you can understand the situation. Also the laptop is overheating. How can I fix this problem? How can i get the Ubuntu 11.04 view back? I also tried Google, but couldn't find any issue like this. So when the go to a web site displaying adsense, it is likely that re-marketing ad will be displayed to them. Is there a way to do the same for if a visitor has visited a competitors site. i.e. if a visitor goes to one of my competitor sites, I want the display ads they see, to be mine. Is that possible?

• Running ubuntu 10.04 without a laptop's primary display

  I have an IBM thinkpad(R50e) whose display is broken. I would still like to use the laptop by connecting it to an external monitor and keyboard/mouse. This is what I did: Removed the hard disk from the broken IBM Put the hard disk in the working IBM and installed 10.04 on it. It booted fine and I installed many packages and stuff. I put the hard disk back into the broken display IBM thinking I could use it by connecting it to an external monitor that I own. Well, it turns out that while booting, the display shows up but because the display shifts from the VGA display to the primary display mid-boot, the laptop does not boot. Is there a way in which I can force the laptop to not use its primary display while booting. I looked at Randr and also grub.conf settings but nothing seemed to work. Please help!

• Migrating from SQL Trace to Extended Events

  In SQL Server codenamed “Denali” we are moving our diagnostic tracing capabilities forward by building a system on top of Extended Events. With every new system you face the specter of migration which is always a bit of a hassle. I’m obviously motivated to see everyone move their diagnostic tracing systems over to the new extended events based system, so I wanted to make sure we lowered the bar for the migration process to help ease your trials. In my initial post on Denali CTP 1 I described a couple tables that we created that will help map the existing SQL Trace Event Classes to the equivalent Extended Events events. In this post I’ll describe the tables in a bit more details, explain the relationship between the SQL Trace objects (Event Class & Column) and Extended Event objects (Events & Actions) and at the end provide some sample code for a managed stored procedure that will take an existing SQL Trace session (eg. a trace that you can see in sys.Traces) and converts it into event session DDL. Can you relate? In some ways, SQL Trace and Extended Events is kind of like the Standard and Metric measuring systems in the United States. If you spend too much time trying to figure out how to convert between the two it will probably make your head hurt. It’s often better to just use the new system without trying to translate between the two. That said, people like to relate new things to the things they’re comfortable with, so, with some trepidation, I will now explain how these two systems are related to each other. First, some terms… SQL Trace is made up of Event Classes and Columns. The Event Class occurs as the result of some activity in the database engine, for example, SQL:Batch Completed fires when a batch has completed executing on the server. Each Event Class can have any number of Columns associated with it and those Columns contain the data that is interesting about the Event Class, such as the duration or database name. In Extended Events we have objects named Events, EventData field and Actions. The Event (some people call this an xEvent but I’ll stick with Event) is equivalent to the Event Class in SQL Trace since it is the thing that occurs as the result of some activity taking place in the server. An  EventData field (from now on I’ll just refer to these as fields) is a piece of information that is highly correlated with the event and is always included as part of the schema of an Event. An Action is something that can be associated with any Event and it will cause some additional “action” to occur when ever the parent Event occurs. Actions can do a number of different things for example, there are Actions that collect additional data and, take memory dumps. When mapping SQL Trace onto Extended Events, Columns are covered by a combination of both fields and Actions. Knowing exactly where a Column is covered by a field and where it is covered by an Action is a bit of an art, so we created the mapping tables to make you an Artist without the years of practice. Let me draw you a map. Event Mapping The table dbo.trace_xe_event_map exists in the master database with the following structure: Column_name Type trace_event_id smallint package_name nvarchar xe_event_name nvarchar By joining this table sys.trace_events using trace_event_id and to the sys.dm_xe_objects using xe_event_name you can get a fair amount of information about how Event Classes are related to Events. The most basic query this lends itself to is to match an Event Class with the corresponding Event. SELECT     t.trace_event_id,     t.name [event_class],     e.package_name,     e.xe_event_name FROM sys.trace_events t INNER JOIN dbo.trace_xe_event_map e     ON t.trace_event_id = e.trace_event_id There are a couple things you’ll notice as you peruse the output of this query: For the most part, the names of Events are fairly close to the original Event Class; eg. SP:CacheMiss == sp_cache_miss, and so on. We’ve mostly stuck to a one to one mapping between Event Classes and Events, but there are a few cases where we have combined when it made sense. For example, Data File Auto Grow, Log File Auto Grow, Data File Auto Shrink & Log File Auto Shrink are now all covered by a single event named database_file_size_change. This just seemed like a “smarter” implementation for this type of event, you can get all the same information from this single event (grow/shrink, Data/Log, Auto/Manual growth) without having multiple different events. You can use Predicates if you want to limit the output to just one of the original Event Class measures. There are some Event Classes that did not make the cut and were not migrated. These fall into two categories; there were a few Event Classes that had been deprecated, or that just did not make sense, so we didn’t migrate them. (You won’t find an Event related to mounting a tape – sorry.) The second class is bigger; with rare exception, we did not migrate any of the Event Classes that were related to Security Auditing using SQL Trace. We introduced the SQL Audit feature in SQL Server 2008 and that will be the compliance and auditing feature going forward. Doing this is a very deliberate decision to support separation of duties for DBAs. There are separate permissions required for SQL Audit and Extended Events tracing so you can assign these tasks to different people if you choose. (If you’re wondering, the permission for Extended Events is ALTER ANY EVENT SESSION, which is covered by CONTROL SERVER.) Action Mapping The table dbo.trace_xe_action_map exists in the master database with the following structure: Column_name Type trace_column_id smallint package_name nvarchar xe_action_name nvarchar You can find more details by joining this to sys.trace_columns on the trace_column_id field. SELECT     c.trace_column_id,     c.name [column_name],     a.package_name,     a.xe_action_name FROM sys.trace_columns c INNER JOIN    dbo.trace_xe_action_map a     ON c.trace_column_id = a.trace_column_id If you examine this list, you’ll notice that there are relatively few Actions that map to SQL Trace Columns given the number of Columns that exist. This is not because we forgot to migrate all the Columns, but because much of the data for individual Event Classes is included as part of the EventData fields of the equivalent Events so there is no need to specify them as Actions. Putting it all together If you’ve spent a bunch of time figuring out the inner workings of SQL Trace, and who hasn’t, then you probably know that the typically set of Columns you find associated with any given Event Class in SQL Profiler is not fix, but is determine by the contents of the table sys.trace_event_bindings. We’ve used this table along with the mapping tables to produce a list of Event + Action combinations that duplicate the SQL Profiler Event Class definitions using the following query, which you can also find in the Books Online topic How To: View the Extended Events Equivalents to SQL Trace Event Classes. USE MASTER; GO SELECT DISTINCT    tb.trace_event_id,    te.name AS 'Event Class',    em.package_name AS 'Package',    em.xe_event_name AS 'XEvent Name',    tb.trace_column_id,    tc.name AS 'SQL Trace Column',    am.xe_action_name as 'Extended Events action' FROM (sys.trace_events te LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.trace_xe_event_map em    ON te.trace_event_id = em.trace_event_id) LEFT OUTER JOIN sys.trace_event_bindings tb    ON em.trace_event_id = tb.trace_event_id LEFT OUTER JOIN sys.trace_columns tc    ON tb.trace_column_id = tc.trace_column_id LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.trace_xe_action_map am    ON tc.trace_column_id = am.trace_column_id ORDER BY te.name, tc.name As you might imagine, it’s also possible to map an existing trace definition to the equivalent event session by judicious use of fn_trace_geteventinfo joined with the two mapping tables. This query extracts the list of Events and Actions equivalent to the trace with ID = 1, which is most likely the Default Trace. You can find this query, along with a set of other queries and steps required to migrate your existing traces over to Extended Events in the Books Online topic How to: Convert an Existing SQL Trace Script to an Extended Events Session. But wait…there’s more! If this were an infomercial there’d by some obnoxious guy next to me blogging “Well Mike…that’s pretty neat, but I’m sure you can do more. Can’t you make it even easier to migrate from SQL Trace?”  Needless to say, I’d blog back, in an overly excited way, “You bet I can' obnoxious blogger side-kick!” What I’ve got for you here is a Extended Events Team Blog only special – this tool will not be sold in any store; it’s a special offer for those of you reading the blog. I’ve wrapped all the logic of pulling the configuration information out of an existing trace and and building the Extended Events DDL statement into a handy, dandy CLR stored procedure. Once you load the assembly and register the procedure you just supply the trace id (from sys.traces) and provide a name for the event session. Run the procedure and out pops the DDL required to create an equivalent session. Any aspects of the trace that could not be duplicated are included in comments within the DDL output. This procedure does not actually create the event session – you need to copy the DDL out of the message tab and put it into a new query window to do that. It also requires an existing trace (but it doesn’t have to be running) to evaluate; there is no functionality to parse t-sql scripts. I’m not going to spend a bunch of time explaining the code here – the code is pretty well commented and hopefully easy to follow. • Display problem with fresh install of 12.04

  Just intalled Ubuntu 12.04 from CD and install went with no problems. After rebooting, I get the initial purple screen and then a black screen with mouse pointer and a few stray pixels at the bottom left of screen. Occasionally during the boot process, the purple screen comes back momentarily but then back to the black screen with the mouse pointer. When I finally give up and press the power button, the purple screen returns with the Shut Down box visible as it is shutting down. Any ideas? I have tried adding nomodeset after quiet splash, but no change. Possibly not doing it correctly, since I am somewhat of a newbie to linux. Thanks! Dan

  For those fighting with all the Extended Event terminology, let's step back and have a small overall Introduction to Extended Events. This post will give you a simplified end to end view through some of the elements in Extended Events. Before we start, let’s review the first Extented Events that we are going to use: -          Events: The SQL Server code is populated with event calls that, by default, are disabled. Adding events to a session enables those event calls. Once enabled, they will execute the set of functionality defined by the session. -          Target: This is an Extended Event Object that can be used to log event information. Also it is important to understand the following Extended Event concept: -          Session: Server Object created by the user that defines functionality to be executed every time a set of events happen.   It’s time to write a small “Hello World” using Extended Events. This will help understand the above terms. We will use: -          Event sqlserver. error_reported: This event gets fired every time that an error happens in the server. -          Target package0.asynchronous_file_target: This target stores the event data in disk. -          Session: We will create a session that sends all the error_reported events to the ring buffer. Before we get started, a quick note: Don’t run this script in a production environment. • Can't use laptop display?

  I've just installed Ubuntu 11.10 with a LiveCD. During the installation, nothing was shown on screen unless I plugged in an external monitor. Same thing happens within Ubuntu. I have an Emachines E525. Could this just be a backlight issue or something? It works fine on Windows though. If anyone could help, that'd be great. Please explain everything throughly if you can though, I'm new to all of this.

  I have a problem which looks like this: http://s16.postimage.org/yjusy9en9/Screenshot_from_2012_10_28_22_49_07.png If you take a look at buttons "Apply", "Reset", "Close" or any other buttons or drop-downs, you will see there is no style on them. It is a fresh install of ubuntu 12.10 and it was working on the beginning. But after some time setting up ubuntu I noticed the style on the elements has gone - I don't know when. I installed compiz-settings - maybe that caused - but when I un-install nothing changes. Also checking/unchecking "window decoration" in compiz doesn't help. Please help me. I am out of options :/

• Setting a display's backlight brightness to be lower than is possible via the normal brightness controls

  By normal brightness controls I mean the accelerators on my laptop's keyboard that seem to integrate with Unity. In a dark room, my screen is quite bright, even on the lowest setting. Can I override this? I tried setting it explicitly via both: sudo echo 500 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness sudo echo 500 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness But I get a permission denied error. When at the lower bounds via my keyboard's brighness controls, acpi_video0/actual_brightness is 0, and intel_backlight/actual_brightness is 729. Can I set the latter value to be even lower?

• Display Problems running Ubuntu 12.04 in Windows VMware Player

  I am posting this again because I have changed to VMWare Player and I discovered something new. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Guest) in VMWare Player 6.0.2 on Windows 7 64-bit Host. I have VMWare Tools installed properly. I am running MATE but the problem persists when I change (to and from) xfce, gnome, mate a-- and back again I had been using this for a couple of years without any graphics issues. After an Ubuntu update (typical) -- my video is corrupt and will not refresh correctly. My desktop icons are "mirrored" and when I open a terminal window (for instance) -- sometimes -- the window appears multiple times. Of course, only one is the real image. It seems to be a refresh problem. When I move an active window around the screen the "older" images "erase" and my icons (for instance) are in the correct location. For instance, I can move the terminal around a pretty corrupted window and the screen behind it is repainted correctly. NEW: Next, I got the idea to try and Remote Desktop in to the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Guest OS from my Windows 7 64-bit Host. Once working, and connected via Win RDC -- using MATE as default in my /etc/xrdp/startws.sh -- my video is not corrupted and works fine (as in the past). Any ideas about what is going on ? or how to fix this ?

• dual display breaks unity

  I find that most of the time, when I plug in my Dell 19" monitor with an HDMI lead, unity can't decide on the configuration; it will switch between different resolutions, and setups every 2-30 setusecond until I either ctrl-alt-backspace or unity crashes so I have to hard boot. Alternatively all the windows decorations and unity get killed. My setup is 11.10 64 bit,Dell Vostro 3550, AMD Radeon HD 6630M 1GB, Intel Core i5-2520M processor 2.50 GHz with integrated graphics card Currently I don't think the Radeon graphics card is working properly, but I'm not sure.

• Flikering line on top of display

  I just bought a new Dell Inspiron pre-installed with Ubuntu 11.10. All was fine until I updated the OS. Since then, I have this flickering line at the top of my screen and it won't go after rebooting or changing the screen resolution. It gets really annoying. I don't know which update did this. I tried reinstalling the image from Dell, and it worked fine until I applied the updates. I tried to take a screen shot but it does not show. The line seems to be outside the desktop area. Help please... Thanks!

• Ubuntu 12.04 Server monitor goes into sleep mode (no display) after fresh install

  For some reason I can boot and either use Ubuntu 12.04 server edition, or desktop version. I can live boot the disk, I can go through the installer, or even use the ubuntu alternate installer. But for some reason after the install completes and I reboot the monitor seems to go back into sleep mode and then never loads the command prompt. This is on an industrial adlink MXE-1300 PC. I've installed ubuntu server fine on other models of adlink machines but this one doesn't want to seem to play nice. To me it seems like if it was a video card issue than I could never even load the installer or run ubuntu in live mode. Any thoughts or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

• HTG Explains: Should You Buy Extended Warranties?

  Buy something at an electronics store and you’ll be confronted by a pushy salesperson who insists you need an extended warranty. You’ll also see extended warranties pushed hard when shopping online. But are they worth it? There’s a reason stores push extended warranties so hard. They’re almost always pure profit for the store involved. An electronics store may live on razor-thin product margins and make big profits on extended warranties and overpriced HDMI cables. You’re Already Getting Multiple Warranties First, back up. The product you’re buying already includes a warranty. In fact, you’re probably getting several different types of warranties. Store Return and Exchange: Most electronics stores allow you to return a malfunctioning product within the first 15 or 30 days and they’ll provide you with a new one. The exact period of time will vary from store to store. If you walk out of the store with a defective product and have to swap it for a new one within the first few weeks, this should be easy. Manufacturer Warranty: A device’s manufacturer — whether the device is a laptop, a television, or a graphics card — offers their own warranty period. The manufacturer warranty covers you after the store refuses to take the product back and exchange it. The length of this warranty depends on the type of product. For example, a cheap laptop may only offer a one-year manufacturer warranty, while a more expensive laptop may offer a two-year warranty. Credit Card Warranty Extension: Many credit cards offer free extended warranties on products you buy with that credit card. Credit card companies will often give you an additional year of warranty. For example, if you buy a laptop with a two year warranty and it fails in the third year, you could then contact your credit card company and they’d cover the cost of fixing or replacing it. Check your credit card’s benefits and fine print for more information. Why Extended Warranties Are Bad You’re already getting a fairly long warranty period, especially if you have a credit card that offers you a free extended warranty — these are fairly common. If the product you get is a “lemon” and has a manufacturing error, it will likely fail pretty soon — well within your warranty period. The extended warranty matters after all your other warranties are exhausted. In the case of a laptop with a two-year warranty that you purchase with a credit card giving you a one-year warranty extension, your extended warranty will kick in three years after you purchase the laptop. In that many years, your current laptop will likely feel pretty old and laptops that are as good — or better — will likely be pretty cheap. If it’s a television, better television displays will be available at a lower price point. You’ll either want to upgrade to a newer model or you’ll be able to buy a new, just-as-good product for very cheap. You’ll only have to pay out-of-pocket if your device fails after the normal warranty period — in over two or three years for typical laptops purchased with a decent credit card. Save the money you would have spent on the warranty and put it towards a future upgrade. How Much Do Extended Warranties Cost? Let’s look at an example from a typical pushy retail outlet, Best Buy. We went to Best Buy’s website and found a pretty standard $600 Samsung laptop. This laptop comes with a one-year warranty period. If purchased with a fairly common credit card, you can easily get a two-year warranty period on this laptop without spending an additional penny. (Yes, such credit cards are available with no yearly fees.) During the check-out process, Best Buy tries to sell you a Geek Squad “Accidental Protection Plan.” To get an additional year of Best Buy’s extended warranty, you’d have to pay $324.98 for a “3-Year Accidental Protection Plan”. You’d basically be paying more than half the price of your laptop for an additional year of warranty — remember, the standard warranties would cover you anyway for the first two years. If this laptop did break sometime between two and three years from now, we wouldn’t be surprised if you could purchase a comparable laptop for about $325 anyway. And, if you don’t need to replace it, you’ve saved that money. Best Buy would object that this isn’t a standard extended warranty. It’s a supercharged warranty plan that will also provide coverage if you spill something on your laptop or drop it and break it. You just have to ask yourself a question. What are the odds that you’ll drop your laptop or spill something on it? They’re probably pretty low if you’re a typical human being. Is it worth spending more than half the price of the laptop just in case you’ll make an uncommon mistake? Probably not. There may be occasional exceptions to this — some Apple users swear by Apple’s AppleCare, for example — but you should generally avoid buying these things. There’s a reason stores are so pushy about extended warranties, and it’s not because they want to help protect you. • Toshiba Tecra A8 display resizes to 4:3 when an External display is used

  I am very new to this so please excuse me if the solution is simple. I am running an old Toshiba Tecra A8 laptop and the screen is fine until I attach an external monitor via VGA then the laptops monitor resizes itself and changes ratios to 3:4 is there a fix for this or am I out of luck? As additional information: I have tried 3 or 4 different monitors and it happens with all of them, except that the external monitors hold the 3:4 display ration but get stretched out. Feel free to add comments requesting more information if needed for a fix.

• Move window from display :0.0 to display :10.0?

  I'm using Cygwin to login to my lubuntu box: ssh -y *user*@192.168.12.37 I can easily use byobu to redeem my cli session. Is there a way to move a running window from display :0.0 to my remote session (:10.0)? I ask because my lubuntu box is hooked to the HDTV in the living room, and I give my kids priority to do their educational stuff on the big screen. I then (try to) pick up where I left off on a netbook Cygwin session. Usually I have to quit everything and restart on the netbook.
