• Built-in card-reader doesn't work. HP Compaq nx6325 notebook

  I have a HP-Compaq nx6325 notebook with an built-in card-reader (SD, MS/Pro, MMC, SM, XD) and the ubuntu (10.10.) don't see it. I've tried to install it manually, with this steps (and with this tifmxx driver), but doesn't work. • mysql_query missing during installation

  Hi, I'm trying to install the pdo_mysql extension... I managed to install it succesfully, but ever since I upgraded mysql to 5.1.34 (using rpm packages) it seems to have gone down so I tried to reinstall it. In that file there seems to be a mysql_query(); statement. I'm pretty sure mysql_query works however since all of my websites are running normally. However the current setup is a mess (previous students kind of messed it up) and there are a whole lot of libmysqclient's in /etc: libmysqlclient.so.10.0.0 libmysqlclient.so.12.0.0 libmysqlclient.so.14.0.0 libmysqlclient.so.15.0.0 libmysqlclient.so.16.0.0 libmysqlclient_r.so.10.0.0 libmysqlclient_r.so.12.0.0 libmysqlclient_r.so.14.0.0 libmysqlclient_r.so.15.0.0 libmysqlclient_r.so.16.0.0 And just as much symlinks. Does anyone know how to get this right? Many thanks! (oh, and no pecl install pdo_mysql doesn't get me any further). I'm runnnig CentOS 4 with php 5.2.9 compiled from source and MySQL 5.1.34

  I am trying to set up a DHCP relay agent that would relay DHCP requests for both IPv4 and IPv6. I am using CentOS 6.2 and I am using the dhcrelay from the ISC DHCP implementation. I would like to set it up as a service, but the man page for dhcrelay states: -6 Run dhcrelay as a DHCPv6 relay agent. Incompatible with the -4 option. -4 Run dhcrelay as a DHCPv4/BOOTP relay agent. This is the default mode of operation, so the argu- ment is not necessary, but may be specified for clarity. Incompatible with -6. It seems that the -6 and -4 options are incompatible. How would I still make it work for both protocols without rolling my own service wrapper for both cases?

• Netbeans / persistence API error

  I am following this tutorial, I'm using netbeans 6.5.1 http://www.netbeans.org/kb/docs/java/gui-db-custom.html When I get to the part where I create the "new entity class from database", which is in the "Customizing the Master/Detail View" section of the tutoiral. I can't ever compile because I get this error in the task list (and I get a runtime error when I run)... Atleast I think these two are related. • Can I access type int (*)[] with [][]?

  Hi coming from this question "What does (int (*)[])var1 stand for?" I tried to access the result of the cast like a multidimensional array. But I get following error: "assignment from incompatible pointer type" followed by a segmentation fault. I tried also some other variations, but none of them worked. How can I access the elements in var1 in the function example directly? • Convert png sequence to x264 with ffmpeg

  I am trying to convert a series of pngs into an mp4 video. I am using ffmpeg, and want to encode the video with the x264 codec. Using the command ffmpeg -y -r 30 -b 1800k -i _tmp%04d.png -vcodec libx264 out.mp4 I get the following warning message Incompatible pixel format 'bgra' for codec 'libx264', auto-selecting format 'yuv420p' My understanding is that there is an alpha channel in the pngs, which the x264 encoder cannot handle. Is there a way to get around this problem? Is there, for example, a way to get the encoder to ignore the alpha channel (my pngs don't actually have any transparent elements)? I'm aware that I could batch convert the pngs beforehand to strip the alpha channel, but the sequence of images is produced by another program, and having to preprocess the images each time I make a video would be less than optimal. Edit: After stripping the alpha channel from each frame using the command convert in.png -background white -flatten +matte out.png ffmpeg gives the warning message Incompatible pixel format 'pal8' for codec 'libx264', auto-selecting format 'yuv420p' so still no dice.

• OpenSSL Versions in Solaris

  Those of you have have installed Solaris 11 or have read some of the blogs by my colleagues will have noticed Solaris 11 includes OpenSSL 1.0.0, this is a different version to what we have in Solaris 10.  I hope the following explains why that is and how it fits with the expectations on binary compatibility between Solaris releases. Solaris 10 was the first release where we included OpenSSL libraries and headers (part of it was actually statically linked into the SSH client/server in Solaris 9).  At time we were building and releasing Solaris 10 the current train of OpenSSL was 0.9.7.  The OpenSSL libraries at that time were known to not always be completely API and ABI (binary) compatible between releases (some times even in the lettered patch releases) though mostly if you stuck with the documented high level APIs you would be fine.   For this reason OpenSSL was classified as a 'Volatile' interface and in Solaris 10 Volatile interfaces were not part of the default library search path which is why the OpenSSL libraries live in /usr/sfw/lib on Solaris 10.  Okay, but what does Volatile mean ? Quoting from the attributes(5) man page description of Volatile (which was called External in older taxonomy): Volatile interfaces can change at any time and for any reason. The Volatile interface stability level allows Sun pro- ducts to quickly track a fluid, rapidly evolving specif- ication. In many cases, this is preferred to providing additional stability to the interface, as it may better meet the expectations of the consumer. The most common application of this taxonomy level is to interfaces that are controlled by a body other than Sun, but unlike specifications controlled by standards bodies or Free or Open Source Software (FOSS) communities which value interface compatibility, it can not be asserted that an incompatible change to the interface specifica- tion would be exceedingly rare. It may also be applied to FOSS controlled software where it is deemed more important to track the community with minimal latency than to provide stability to our customers. It also common to apply the Volatile classification level to interfaces in the process of being defined by trusted or widely accepted organization. These are generically referred to as draft standards. An "IETF Internet draft" is a well understood example of a specification under development. Volatile can also be applied to experimental interfaces. No assertion is made regarding either source or binary compatibility of Volatile interfaces between any two releases, including patches. Applications containing these interfaces might fail to function properly in any future release. Note that last paragraph!  OpenSSL is only one example of the many interfaces in Solaris that are classified as Volatile.  At the other end of the scale we have Committed (Stable in Solaris 10 terminology) interfaces, these include things like the POSIX APIs or Solaris specific APIs that we have no intention of changing in an incompatible way.  There are also Private interfaces and things we declare as Not-an-Interface (eg command output not intended for scripting against only to be read by humans). Even if we had declared OpenSSL as a Committed/Stable interface in Solaris 10 there are allowed exceptions, again quoting from attributes(5): 4. An interface specification which isn't controlled by Sun has been changed incompatibly and the vast majority of interface consumers expect the newer interface. 5. Not making the incompatible change would be incomprehensible to our customers. In our opinion and that of our large and small customers keeping up with the OpenSSL community is important, and certainly both of the above cases apply. Our policy for dealing with OpenSSL on Solaris 10 was to stay at 0.9.7 and add fixes for security vulnerabilities (the version string includes the CVE numbers of fixed vulnerabilities relevant to that release train).  The last release of OpenSSL 0.9.7 delivered by the upstream community was more than 4 years ago in Feb 2007. Now lets roll forward to just before the release of Solaris 11 Express in 2010. By that point in time the current OpenSSL release was 0.9.8 with the 1.0.0 release known to be coming soon.  Two significant changes to OpenSSL were made between Solaris 10 and Solaris 11 Express.  First in Solaris 11 Express (and Solaris 11) we removed the requirement that Volatile libraries be placed in /usr/sfw/lib, that means OpenSSL is now in /usr/lib, secondly we upgraded it to the then current version stream of OpenSSL (0.9.8) as was expected by our customers. In between Solaris 11 Express in 2010 and the release of Solaris 11 in 2011 the OpenSSL community released version 1.0.0.  This was a huge milestone for a long standing and highly respected open source project.  It would have been highly negligent of Solaris not to include OpenSSL 1.0.0e in the Solaris 11 release. It is the latest best supported and best performing version.     In fact Solaris 11 isn't 'just' OpenSSL 1.0.0 but we have added our SPARC T4 engine and the AES-NI engine to support the on chip crypto acceleration. This gives us 4.3x better AES performance than OpenSSL 0.9.8 running on AIX on an IBM POWER7. We are now working with the OpenSSL community to determine how best to integrate the SPARC T4 changes into the mainline OpenSSL.  The OpenSSL 'pkcs11' engine we delivered in Solaris 10 to support the CA-6000 card and the SPARC T1/T2/T3 hardware is still included in Solaris 11. When OpenSSL 1.0.1 and 1.1.0 come out we will asses what is best for Solaris customers. It might be upgrade or it might be parallel delivery of more than one version stream.  At this time Solaris 11 still classifies OpenSSL as a Volatile interface, it is our hope that we will be able at some point in a future release to give it a higher interface stability level.   Hello fellow Scala Programmers I have been working with Scala for some month now, however I have a problem with some properly basic stuff, I am hoping you will help my out with it. case class PersonClass(name: String, age: Int) object CaseTester { def main(args:Array[String]) { val string = "hej" string match { case e:String => println(string) case PersonClass => println(string) } } } When I am doing like this I get error: pattern type is incompatible with expected type; found : object PersonClass required: java.lang.String case PersonClass = println(string) And if I then change the second line in the pattern matching to the following: case e:PersonClass => println(string) I then get the error: error: scrutinee is incompatible with pattern type; found : PersonClass required: java.lang.String case e:PersonClass = println(string) However if I change the string definition to the following it compiles fine in both cases. val string:AnyRef = "hej"

• GCC, functions, and pointer arguments, warning behaviour

  I've recently updated to a testing distribution, which is now using GCC 4.4.3. Now I've set everything up, I've returned to coding and have built my project and I get one of these horrible messages: *** glibc detected *** ./boxyseq: free(): invalid pointer: 0x0000000001d873e8 *** I absolutely know what is wrong here, but was rather confused as to when I saw my C code where I call a function which frees a dynamically allocated data structure - I had passed it an incompatible pointer type - a pointer to a completely different data structure. warning: passing argument 1 of 'data_A_free' from incompatible pointer type note: expected 'struct data_A *' but argument is of type 'struct data_B *' I'm confused because I'm sure this would have been an error before and compilation would never have completed. Is this not just going to make life more difficult for C programmers? Can I change it back to an error without making a whole bunch of other warnings errors too? Or am I loosing the plot and it's always been a warning?

• Compatible types and structures in C

  I have the following code: int main(void) { struct { int x; } a, b; struct { int x; } c; struct { int x; } *p; b = a; /* OK */ c = a; /* Doesn't work */ p = &a; /* Doesn't work */ return 0; } which fails to compile under GCC (3.4.6), with the following error: test.c:8: error: incompatible types in assignment test.c:9: warning: assignment from incompatible pointer type Now, from what I understand (admittedly from the C99 standard), is that a and c should be compatible types, as they fulfill all the criteria in section 6.2.7, paragraph 1. I've tried compiling with std=c99, to no avail. Presumably my interpretation of the standard is wrong?

• Override existing AS3 classes

  For a custom derived class "Vector2" from flash.geom.Point, when trying to override the clone() method (similar to add(), subtract() methods that will return the type itself), it will always complain about incompatible overriding 'cuz the return type has been altered from "Point" to "Vector2". import flash.geom.Point; public class Vector2 extends Point { //Constructor is good public function Vector2(x:Number = 0, y:Number = 0) { super(x,y); } // Error: Incompatible overriding override public function clone():Vector2 //return type has to be "Point" { return new Vector2(this.x , this.y); } } How can we correctly reuse/override the methods provided by the super classes as supposed to create our own one (e.g. : a new clone1() method), or simply we just can't? • Will Python 3.0's backwards-incompatibility affect adoption?

  I visited Slashdot this morning to find out that Python 3.0 has been released. I know C# and Perl, but have wanted to learn Python for some time, especially after I saw its ease of use to create useful tools, not to mention its use in game scripting. My question is, how does the intentionally backwards-incompatible release of Python 3.0 affect adoption, and should I learn Python 2? Or should I take the dive and learn Python 3.0 first, and wait for the libraries to be ported?

• Compiling Quake 3 in Snow Leopard

  First of all I have Xcode 4 installed in Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have downloaded the Quake 3 source code 1.32b release but I can't open the Xcode project that is inside the /macosx folder since it is in the old .pbproj format and therefore it throws an "incompatible version" error. Has anyone been able to convert this to a Xcode format or is there any other way to compile the source code in Mac OS X Snow Leopard? Thanks

  Im looking for something similar to iPlotz or Mockup. I've found Pencil Project, but it require xulrunner-1.9 (seem to be incompatible with xulrunner-1.9.2) to be run as a standalone application; However it can be used as a firefox plugin..but is a bit slower. The error on my desktop (ubuntu 10.04) is: Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.1 and 1.9.2.* Does anyone know other software? Edit: open-source softwares are preferred, doesnt matter if free.
