  • log4j/log4cxx : exclusive 1 to 1 relation between logger and appender

    - by Omry
Using the xml configuration of log4cxx (which is identical in configuration to log4j). I want to have a certain logger output exclusively to a specific appender (have it the only logger which outputs to that appender). I found that it's possible to bind a logger to a specific appender like this: <logger name="LoggerName"> <level value="info"/> <appender-ref ref="AppenderName"/> </logger> but it that logger still outputs to the root appender because I have this standard piece in the conf file: <root> <priority value="DEBUG"/> <appender-ref ref="OtherAppender"/> </root> How can I exclude that logger from the root logger? in other words, how do I configure the log such that all loggers inherit the appenders of the root logger except a specific logger?

  • Can you pull the connectionString for a log4net AdoNetAppender from elsewhere in a web.config file?

    - by mrsharps
Hey all. This is my first StackOverflow question. I'm already have a db connection string in my web.config file. I scanned the log4net docs, but can't seem to find a way to use it within the log4net section of my web.config file. Is is possible to do something like this? <connectionStrings> <add name="connStr" connectionString="Data Source=localhost; ..." /> </connectionStrings> <log4net> <appender name="AdoNetAppender" type="log4net.Appender.AdoNetAppender"> <connectionString connectionStringName="connStr"/> ... </log4net> Thanks!

  • Logging with Quartz.net

    - by Young Ninja
    I will shamelessly state that I have little experience with Log4Net... I only just installed it, but it won't capture log events from Quartz.net, which is a scheduling library. Apparently Quartz.net uses Commons Logging and that needs to be configured to point to my Log4Net settings. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. Help is appreciated: <configSections> ... <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net" /> <section name="quartz" type="System.Configuration.NameValueSectionHandler, System, Version=1.0.5000.0,Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" /> <section name="commonLogging" type="Common.Logging.ConfigurationSectionHandler, Common.Logging"/> </configSections> <!-- Log4net error handling --> <log4net> <appender name="LogFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.FileAppender"> <param name="File" value="Admin/LabSlice.log" /> <param name="AppendToFile" value="true" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <root> <level value="INFO" /> <appender-ref ref="LogFileAppender" /> </root> </log4net> <!-- Commons logging (Quart.net logs) --> <commonLogging> <logging> <factoryAdapter type="Common.Logging.Log4Net.Log4NetLoggerFactoryAdapter, Common.Logging.Log4net"> <arg key="configType" value="INLINE" /> </factoryAdapter> </logging> </commonLogging>

  • How can I get the previous logged events when a particular logger is triggered?

    - by Ben Laan
    I need to show the previous 10 events when a particular logger is triggered. The goal is to show what previous steps occurred immediately before NHibernate.SQL logging was issued. Currently, I am logging NHibernate sql to a separate file - this is working correctly. <appender name="NHibernateSqlAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="Logs\NHibernate.log" /> <appendToFile value="true" /> <rollingStyle value="Size" /> <maxSizeRollBackups value="10" /> <maximumFileSize value="10000KB" /> <staticLogFileName value="true" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d{dd/MM/yy HH:mm:ss,fff} [%t] %-5p %c - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <logger name="NHibernate.SQL" additivity="false"> <level value="ALL"/> <appender-ref ref="NHibernateSqlAppender"/> </logger> <logger name="NHibernate" additivity="false"> <level value="WARN"/> <appender-ref ref="NHibernateSqlAppender"/> </logger> But this only outputs SQL, without context. I would like all previous logs within a specified namespace to also be logged, but only when the HNibernate.SQL appender is triggered. I have investigated the use of BufferingForwardingAppender as a means to collect all events, and then filter them within the NHibernateSqlAppender, but this is not working. I have read about the LoggerMatchFilter class, which seems like it is going to help, but I'm not sure where to put it. <appender name="BufferingForwardingAppender" type="log4net.Appender.BufferingForwardingAppender" > <bufferSize value="10" /> <lossy value="true" /> <evaluator type="log4net.Core.LevelEvaluator"> <threshold value="ALL"/> </evaluator> <appender-ref ref="NHibernateSqlAppender" /> </appender> <appender name="NHibernateSqlAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="Logs\NHibernate.log" /> <appendToFile value="true" /> <rollingStyle value="Size" /> <maxSizeRollBackups value="10" /> <maximumFileSize value="10000KB" /> <staticLogFileName value="true" /> <filter type="log4net.Filter.LoggerMatchFilter"> <loggerToMatch value="NHibernate.SQL" /> <loggerToMatch value="Laan" /> </filter> <filter type="log4net.Filter.LoggerMatchFilter"> <loggerToMatch value="NHibernate" /> <acceptOnMatch value="false"/> </filter> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d{dd/MM/yy HH:mm:ss,fff} [%t] %-5p %c - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <root> <level value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="BufferingForwardingAppender"/> </root> The idea is that buffering appender will store all events, but then the NHibernateSqlAppender will only flush when an NHibernate.SQL event fires, plus it will flush the buffer (of 10 previous items, within the specified logger level, which in this example is Laan.*).

  • Query a Log4Net-database

    - by pinhack
So if you use Log4Net to log into a database (i.e. using the AdoNetAppender), how can you conveniently get an overview of what has happend ? Well, you could try the following Query ( T-SQL ):   SELECT convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121) as Datum, LogDB.Level, LogDB.Logger,COUNT(LogDB.Logger) as Counter From Log4Net.dbo.Log as LogDB  where Level <> 'DEBUG' AND convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121) like '2010-03-25' GROUP BY convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121),LogDB.Level,LogDB.Logger ORDER BY counter desc This query will give you the number of events by the Logger at a specified date - and it's easy to customize, just adjust the Date and the Level to your needs. You need a bit more information than that? How about this query:  Select  convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121) as Datum,LogDB.Level,LogDB.Message,LogDB.Logger ,count(LogDB.Message) as counter From Log4Net.dbo.Log as LogDB where Level <> 'DEBUG' AND convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121) like '2010-03-25' GROUP BY convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121),LogDB.Level,LogDB.Message,LogDB.Logger ORDER BY counter desc Similar to the first one, but inclusive the Message - which will return a much larger resultset.

  • dynamic log4net appender name?

    - by sanjeev40084
Let's say i have 3 smtp appenders in same log4net file whose names are: <appender name = "emailDevelopment".. /> <appender name = "emailBeta".. /> <appender name = "emailProduction".. /> Let's say i have 3 different servers(Dev, Beta, Production). Depending upon the server, i want to fire the log. In case of Development server, it would fire log from "emailDevelopment". I have a system variable in each server named "ApplicationEnvironment" whose value is Development, Beta, Production based on the server names. Now is there anyway i can setup root in log4net so that it fires email depending upon the server name. <root> <priority value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="email<environment name from whose appender should be used>" /> </root>

  • Best practices for creating a logger library using log4net. Is

    - by VolleyBall Player
My goal is to create a log4net library that can be shared across multiple projects. In my solution which is in .net 4.0, I created a class library called Logger and referenced it from web project. Now I created a logger.config in the class library and put all the configuration in the logger.config file. I then used [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(Watch = true, ConfigFile = "Logger.config")] When I run the web app nothing is getting logged. So I added this line of code in web.config <add key="log4net.Internal.Debug" value="true"/> which gave me debugging info and error information Failed to find configuration section 'log4net' in the application's .config file. Check your .config file for the and elements. The configuration section should look like: I moved the configuration from logger.config to web.config and everything seems to work fine. I don't want the log4net configuration in web.config but have it logger.config as a cleaner approach. The goal is to make other projects use this library and not have to worry about configuration in every project. Now the question is, How do I do this? What am I doing wrong? Any suggestion with code example will be beneficial to everyone. FYI, I am using structure map IOC to reslove the logger before logging to it.

  • Quartz.Net Windows Service Configure Logging

    - by Tarun Arora
In this blog post I’ll be covering, Logging for Quartz.Net Windows Service 01 – Why doesn’t Quartz.Net Windows Service log by default 02 – Configuring Quartz.Net windows service for logging to eventlog, file, console, etc 03 – Results: Logging in action If you are new to Quartz.Net I would recommend going through, A brief Introduction to Quartz.net Walkthrough of Installing & Testing Quartz.Net as a Windows Service Writing & Scheduling your First HelloWorld job with Quartz.Net   01 – Why doesn’t Quartz.Net Windows Service log by default If you are trying to figure out why… The Quartz.Net windows service isn’t logging The Quartz.Net windows service isn’t writing anything to the event log The Quartz.Net windows service isn’t writing anything to a file How do I configure Quartz.Net windows service to use log4Net How do I change the level of logging for Quartz.Net Look no further, This blog post should help you answer these questions. Quartz.NET uses the Common.Logging framework for all of its logging needs. If you navigate to the directory where Quartz.Net Windows Service is installed (I have the service installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Quartz.net, you can find out the location by looking at the properties of the service) and open ‘Quartz.Server.exe.config’ you’ll see that the Quartz.Net is already set up for logging to ConsoleAppender and EventLogAppender, but only ‘ConsoleAppender’ is set up as active. So, unless you have the console associated to the Quartz.Net service you won’t be able to see any logging. <log4net> <appender name="ConsoleAppender" type="log4net.Appender.ConsoleAppender"> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d [%t] %-5p %l - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <appender name="EventLogAppender" type="log4net.Appender.EventLogAppender"> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d [%t] %-5p %l - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <root> <level value="INFO" /> <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender" /> <!-- uncomment to enable event log appending --> <!-- <appender-ref ref="EventLogAppender" /> --> </root> </log4net> Problem: In the configuration above Quartz.Net Windows Service only has ConsoleAppender active. So, no logging will be done to EventLog. More over the RollingFileAppender isn’t setup at all. So, Quartz.Net will not log to an application trace log file. 02 – Configuring Quartz.Net windows service for logging to eventlog, file, console, etc Let’s change this behaviour by changing the config file… In the below config file, I have added the RollingFileAppender. This will configure Quartz.Net service to write to a log file. (<appender name="GeneralLog" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender">) I have specified the location for the log file (<arg key="configFile" value="Trace/application.log.txt"/>) I have enabled the EventLogAppender and RollingFileAppender to be written to by Quartz. Net windows service Changed the default level of logging from ‘Info’ to ‘All’. This means all activity performed by Quartz.Net Windows service will be logged. You might want to tune this back to ‘Debug’ or ‘Info’ later as logging ‘All’ will produce too much data to the logs. (<level value="ALL"/>) Since I have changed the logging level to ‘All’, I have added applicationSetting to remove logging log4Net internal debugging. (<add key="log4net.Internal.Debug" value="false"/>) <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <configSections> <section name="quartz" type="System.Configuration.NameValueSectionHandler, System, Version=1.0.5000.0,Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" /> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net" /> <sectionGroup name="common"> <section name="logging" type="Common.Logging.ConfigurationSectionHandler, Common.Logging" /> </sectionGroup> </configSections> <common> <logging> <factoryAdapter type="Common.Logging.Log4Net.Log4NetLoggerFactoryAdapter, Common.Logging.Log4net"> <arg key="configType" value="INLINE" /> <arg key="configFile" value="Trace/application.log.txt"/> <arg key="level" value="ALL" /> </factoryAdapter> </logging> </common> <appSettings> <add key="log4net.Internal.Debug" value="false"/> </appSettings> <log4net> <appender name="ConsoleAppender" type="log4net.Appender.ConsoleAppender"> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d [%t] %-5p %l - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <appender name="EventLogAppender" type="log4net.Appender.EventLogAppender"> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d [%t] %-5p %l - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <appender name="GeneralLog" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="Trace/application.log.txt"/> <appendToFile value="true"/> <maximumFileSize value="1024KB"/> <rollingStyle value="Size"/> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d{HH:mm:ss} [%t] %-5p %c - %m%n"/> </layout> </appender> <root> <level value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender" /> <appender-ref ref="EventLogAppender" /> <appender-ref ref="GeneralLog"/> </root> </log4net> </configuration>   Note – Please ensure you restart the Quartz.Net Windows service for the config changes to be picked up by the service   03 – Results: Logging in action Once you start the Quartz.Net Windows Service up, the logging should be initiated to write all activities in the Console, EventLog and File… See screen shots below… Figure – Quartz.Net Windows Service logging all activity to the event log Figure – Quartz.Net Windows Service logging all activity to the application log file Where is the output from log4Net ConsoleAppender? As a default behaviour, the console isn't available in windows services, web services, windows forms. The output will simply be dismissed. Unless you are running the process interactively. Which you can do by firing up Quartz.Server.exe –i to see the output   This was fourth in the series of posts on enterprise scheduling using Quartz.net, in the next post I’ll be covering troubleshooting why a scheduled task hasn’t fired on Quartz.net windows service. • Configuring Rolling File Appender

    - by Anand
Hi, My jboss application server log file named jboss-log4j.xml has the following configuration for the rolling file appender <appender name="FILE" class="org.jboss.logging.appender.RollingFileAppender"> <errorHandler class="org.jboss.logging.util.OnlyOnceErrorHandler"/> <param name="File" value="${jboss.server.log.dir}/server.log"/> <param name="Append" value="false"/> <param name="MaxFileSize" value="500KB"/> <param name="MaxBackupIndex" value="1"/> <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d %-5p [%c] %m%n"/> </layout> </appender> What does this exactly do ? How should I set it to do either of the two things ? 1. Delete logs older than 5 days or 2. Delete logs when they exceed 800MB, so that once they are deleted the new logs can take effect

  • What happens to the output to a log4net console appender in a Windows service?

    - by uriDium
I have a console project that I have been working on. I added log4net to handle all my logging. In some places I have made use of the console appender. When I turn this application into a Windows Service should I just remove the console appender or what happens to that output? Does it just get lost? I would like to keep it if all possible because if I run it straight from the command prompt I would like to see the console output to help debug things.

  • log4net: Creating a logger dynamically, should I worry about anything?

    - by vtortola
    Hi, I need to create loggers dynamically, so with a post from here and the help of reflector I have managed to create loggers dynamically, but I'd like to know if I should worry about something else ... I don't know wich implications can have do it. public static ILog GetDyamicLogger(Guid applicationId) { Hierarchy hierarchy = (Hierarchy)LogManager.GetRepository(); RollingFileAppender roller = new RollingFileAppender(); roller.LockingModel = new log4net.Appender.FileAppender.MinimalLock(); roller.AppendToFile = true; roller.RollingStyle = RollingFileAppender.RollingMode.Composite; roller.MaxSizeRollBackups = 14; roller.MaximumFileSize = "15000KB"; roller.DatePattern = "yyyyMMdd"; roller.Layout = new log4net.Layout.PatternLayout(); roller.File = "App_Data\\Logs\\"+applicationId.ToString()+"\\debug.log"; roller.StaticLogFileName = true; PatternLayout patternLayout = new PatternLayout(); patternLayout.ConversionPattern = "%date [%thread] %-5level %logger [%property{NDC}] - %message%newline"; patternLayout.ActivateOptions(); roller.Layout = patternLayout; roller.ActivateOptions(); hierarchy.Root.AddAppender(roller); hierarchy.Root.Level = Level.All; hierarchy.Configured = true; DummyLogger dummyILogger = new DummyLogger(applicationId.ToString()); dummyILogger.Hierarchy = hierarchy; dummyILogger.Level = log4net.Core.Level.All; dummyILogger.AddAppender(roller); return new LogImpl(dummyILogger); } internal sealed class DummyLogger : Logger { // Methods internal DummyLogger(string name) : base(name) { } } Cheers.

  • Do you know of a log4net appender which rolls on date, but let's you limit the total number of files

    - by Michal Drozdowicz
Hi, I need to define an appender for log4net in a way that I get one log file for each day, but the total number of files are limited to, let's say, 30. That is I want to keep only the logs not older then 30 days, delete the older ones. I've tried doing it with RollingFileAppender, but it seems that specifying a limit of files to keep is not supported. Do you know of an alternative solution that I could use?

  • to write log files in two different files

    - by Sun
my application run on customized client framework, the client framework used log4net to log their own log files. we are(our application) has to use the same log4net to log our log files in our own path(say our customized path). currently the our log files are created but log are not writing in that file.it is writting in the client framework log file. searched lot of sites the link http://stackoverflow.com/questions/308436/log4net-programmatcially-specify-multiple-loggers-with-multiple-file-appenders helped me to configure the log4net config programatically, still im log statemets are not written in my log file.the code used as below public class TraceLog { private string message = string.Empty; private static ILog ILogger = null; private static TraceLog instance = new TraceLog(); private TraceLog() { SetLevel("Log4net.MainForm", "ALL"); AddAppender("Log4net.MainForm", CreateFileAppender("FileAppender", "C:\\mylog.log")); } public static TraceLog Instance { get { return instance; } } public void Debug(string logMessage) { message = PrepareLog(logMessage); ILogger.Debug(message); } protected string PrepareLog(string logMessage) { string message = GetFileMethodLineNumberInfo(); message += logMessage; return message; } protected string GetFileMethodLineNumberInfo() { StackTrace stackTrace = new StackTrace(true); // The position 3 is relative to the index of the specified method StackFrame stackFrame = stackTrace.GetFrame(3); return (stackFrame.GetMethod().DeclaringType.Name + "/" + stackFrame.GetMethod().Name + "/" + stackFrame.GetFileLineNumber() + ":"); } private static void SetLevel(string loggerName, string levelName) { ILogger = LogManager.GetLogger(loggerName); log4net.Repository.Hierarchy.Logger l = (log4net.Repository.Hierarchy.Logger)ILogger.Logger; l.Level = l.Hierarchy.LevelMap[levelName]; } private static void AddAppender(string loggerName, IAppender appender) { ILogger = LogManager.GetLogger(loggerName); log4net.Repository.Hierarchy.Logger l = (log4net.Repository.Hierarchy.Logger)ILogger.Logger; l.AddAppender(appender); } private static IAppender CreateFileAppender(string name, string fileName) { FileAppender appender = new FileAppender(); appender.Name = name; appender.File = fileName; appender.AppendToFile = true; //PatternLayout layout = new PatternLayout(); //layout.ConversionPattern = "%d [%t] %-5p %c [%x] - %m%n"; //layout.ActivateOptions(); //appender.Layout = layout; appender.ActivateOptions(); return appender; } } } anyone pls help how to solve this

  • Rolling comments inside a log4net file

    - by Maestro1024
    Rolling comments inside a log4net file Is it possible to roll the data inside the log file? So I have an xml config file like <log4net> <appender name="LogFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <ConversionPattern value="%d{yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss} – %-5p: %m%n" /> </layout> <param name="File" value="c:\log.txt" /> <param name="AppendToFile" value="true" /> <rollingStyle value="Size" /> <maxSizeRollBackups value="1" /> <maximumFileSize value="5MB" /> <staticLogFileName value="false" /> </appender> <root> <level value="DEBUG" /> <appender-ref ref="LogFileAppender" /> </root> </log4net> What I want is to have a 5MB file that when it gets to the end will pull off the first line of the file and then add a new line at the end. Is that possible (I do not see it in the documentation)?

  • Can Log4net have multiple appenders write to the same file?

    - by adam0101
I'm using a RollingFileAppender to log some info to a file with a conversionPattern (in the web.config) that looks like this for the header of each log section: <conversionPattern value="%date - %property{userId} - %property{method}%newline--------------------------------%newline%message%newline%newline"/> I'd like to log details under this header as bullet points. I'm currently trying to use another RollingFileAppender that logs to the same file with a simple conversionPattern of just a dash, like this: <conversionPattern value="- %message%newline"/> But these messages aren't making it into the log file. I'm using Log.Info() for the header and Log.Debug() for the bullet points and filtering each appender on their respective log levels. Is what I'm trying to do possible? Or is there a better way to get header and detail information into a log file from log4net?

Dear ladies and sirs. Our product consists of client, server and agents. Each deployed on different machines. The QA is having a hard time to manipulate the log4net sections in the respective config files. Right now, they have to have remote desktops to all the relevant machines and open notepad in each of them and then edit the files one at a time switching between different machines as they proceed. A real pain in the ass. Can anyone suggest a better solution to this problem? Thanks.

  • log4net - why would the same MyLog.Debug line not work at one point of startup, but work at another

    - by Greg
Hi, During startup of my WinForms application I'm noting that there are a couple of points (before the MainForm renders) that do a "MyDataSet.GetInstance()". For the first one the MyLog.Debug line comes through in the VS2008 output window, but for a later one it does work and come through. What could explain this? What settings could I check at debug time to see why an output line for a MyLog.Debug line doesn't come out in the output window? namespace IntranetSync { public class MyDataSet { private static readonly ILog MyLog = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(MyDataSet)); public static MyDataSet GetInstance() { MyLog.Debug("MyDataSet GetInstance() ====================================="); if (myDataSet == null) { myDataSet = new MyDataSet(); } return myDataSet; } . . . PS. What I have been doing re log4net repository initialization is putting the following line as a private variables in the classes I use logging - is this OK? static class Program { private static readonly ILog MyLog = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(MainForm)); . . . public class Coordinator { private static readonly ILog MyLog = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(MainForm)); . . . public class MyDataSet { private static readonly ILog MyLog = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(MyDataSet)); . . .

  • Why is Log4Net not creating log file in production?

    - by uriDium
I am using VS2005, a website project, a web deployment project and Log4Net. I can use logging when I am developing locally. I can see the log files and everything is fine. When I build my website, (using the web deployment project), I use the deploy as a single DLL option. When I then check the locations of where my log files should be I cannot see any files. Is there a way to troubleshoot this. I don't think adding the debug value to the App Settings will help because I don't have a console because it is a website. EDIT I don't want the 150 rep to go to waste so one last time. I compared the internal trace from my dev environment to the trace from the production. My dev environment trace shows the call the Xml Configurator where the production one does not. I have code in the global.asax on application_start() method. I put debug code in there and it is getting called in dev but not in production. I think this is where the web deployment project is causing some issues. Does the global.asax get compiled into the single DLL? When I do a build in the deployment directory I see a global.compiled file. Must this go into the bin folder in production? Or is the global.asax code in the single DLL? Having both in the bin folder or the just the DLL didn't change anything.
